To stop GitHub Copilot’s inline code completions, change the Copilot suggestion setting in the IDE where you work. In Visual Studio Code, open the Copilot menu, select Configure Inline Suggestions, and choose Disable Completions. You can also open File > Preferences > Settings > Extensions > Copilot and clear Inline Suggest:Enable.
This turns off inline completions in that IDE scope. It does not uninstall Copilot, disable Copilot Chat or code review, or create a repository-wide rule that is automatically enforced for every person who clones the project. Language-specific controls let you use a narrower scope.

Choose the scope before changing a setting
“Disable Copilot in a repository” can describe three different goals. Choosing the right one prevents an overly broad change or a false expectation that a committed file controls every collaborator’s editor.

GitHub’s current guidance, retrieved October 13, 2026, documents IDE controls and VS Code language settings. It does not establish a repository policy that switches suggestions off for every collaborator. Interface labels can differ by IDE release, so use the live menu in your installed version when wording does not exactly match these steps.

Disable every inline suggestion in Visual Studio Code
Use the Copilot menu
- Open the project in Visual Studio Code.
- Open the Copilot menu in the title bar.
- Select Configure Inline Suggestions.
- Choose Disable Completions.
New inline Copilot completions should stop in the scope represented by that command. Existing text remains in the file; disabling suggestions does not remove code that has already been accepted.
Use Settings when the menu is not visible
- Open File > Preferences > Settings.
- Go to Extensions > Copilot.
- Find Inline Suggest:Enable.
- Clear the checkbox.
If the command or setting is missing, confirm that the GitHub Copilot extension is installed and enabled, then check that you are editing the intended user or workspace settings scope. VS Code can show different controls depending on the extension and editor versions installed.
Understand the VS Code scope selector
VS Code may offer separate user and workspace tabs in Settings. User settings apply to your VS Code installation or profile across projects. Workspace settings apply when that project or workspace is open. Select the tab deliberately before clearing the setting: changing the user tab can affect every project, while changing the workspace tab is narrower.
If a project contains multiple folders, confirm that you are editing the settings for the active workspace rather than a different folder. When a setting appears to revert, reopen Settings and inspect the value at each scope instead of assuming the first checkbox you changed is the effective value.
Disable Copilot for selected languages in VS Code
VS Code supports a language map rather than an all-or-nothing switch. This is useful when, for example, you want completions in source code but not in documentation or configuration files.
Open the language setting
- Open VS Code settings and go to the Copilot extension settings.
- Find Enable or disable Copilot for specified languages.
- Open the control to edit the underlying
settings.jsonvalue. - Set each language key to
trueto allow Copilot orfalseto disable it.
GitHub’s example is:
{
"github.copilot.enable": {
"*": true,
"yaml": false,
"plaintext": false
}
}
The "*" entry is the default for languages not listed separately. Replace or add keys for the language identifiers you actually use. Keep the map in the intended user or workspace settings scope. A malformed JSON value can prevent the setting from loading, so preserve commas, quotation marks and braces exactly.
How overrides are evaluated
Use the wildcard as the baseline and add explicit entries for exceptions. With "*": true, a language such as YAML or plain text can be quiet when its own key is false. Conversely, setting the wildcard to false gives you an off-by-default configuration, with individual languages set to true when you want completions. Do not assume that changing the wildcard automatically deletes language-specific entries; inspect the complete object.
The key must match the language identifier VS Code assigns to the file. If a file behaves unexpectedly, use the language indicator in the editor to confirm whether it is recognized as yaml, plaintext or another identifier before changing the map.
Decide whether the setting belongs to the user or workspace
User settings follow your VS Code installation and account profile. Workspace settings associate the choice with the opened project. A workspace setting can make your own behavior consistent whenever you open that project, but the documented controls do not prove that every collaborator will receive or obey the same behavior. Do not describe a committed workspace file as an organization-wide Copilot ban.

What a repository can and cannot control
A repository owner may want a setting that prevents Copilot suggestions for anyone working on the codebase. The documented Copilot controls do not provide that guarantee. Inline completion is controlled by each user’s IDE integration, and collaborators can have different editors, extensions, accounts and local settings.
You can still use a workspace-level VS Code setting when the goal is to associate a preference with the project for your own team workflow. Explain the expected scope to contributors and verify their local IDE settings rather than assuming a clone operation enforces the preference.
Do not confuse custom instructions with completion controls
GitHub documents separate settings for repository-based custom instructions used by Copilot code review and for whether Copilot Chat uses instruction files. Those settings govern how instructions are applied to those features. They do not switch off inline code-completion suggestions. A repository instruction file therefore cannot be presented as a substitute for the Copilot completion toggle.
If a project has a policy about AI-assisted development, communicate it separately in the contributor documentation and use whatever account or organization controls are appropriate. The IDE toggle remains a local completion control, not proof that a repository policy has been technically enforced.
Disable suggestions in JetBrains IDEs
JetBrains integrations expose the completion control through the Copilot status icon and through settings. GitHub’s procedure is written around IntelliJ; menus in other JetBrains products can differ.
Use the status icon for a quick change
- Open the JetBrains IDE and locate the Copilot status icon in the bottom panel.
- Open the icon’s menu.
- Choose Disable Completions to stop suggestions globally, or choose the option for the current language to narrow the change.
The global choice affects all supported languages in that IDE scope. The current-language choice leaves other language integrations unchanged.

Set language choices in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Go to Tools > GitHub Copilot > Completions.
- Open the language list under Languages.
- Disable the languages you do not want to receive completions, then apply the change.
- Restart the IDE if the documented procedure or an on-screen prompt requests it.
If the status icon or menu is absent, check that the Copilot plugin is installed and enabled for that JetBrains product. Since labels can vary between products and releases, use the installed version’s menu as the final authority.
When testing a language-specific change, open a file whose language is listed in the Completions page. A global disable can mask a language selection, so verify the global state first and then test the individual language choice.
Disable suggestions in Visual Studio
In Visual Studio, use the Copilot status icon in the bottom panel. That menu provides controls for disabling suggestions globally or for the current language.

The current GitHub guide has internally inconsistent wording for one Visual Studio menu choice. Rather than relying on a quoted label that may be wrong or may have changed, follow the icon route and read the live menu in your installed version. Select the option whose meaning is clearly to disable completions, and use the language-specific entry when you need a narrower scope.

Disable Copilot suggestions in Xcode
The Xcode integration uses a companion GitHub Copilot for Xcode app rather than the same editor menus used by VS Code or JetBrains.
- Open the GitHub Copilot for Xcode app.
- Open Advanced.
- Open Suggestion Settings.
- Turn off Request suggestions while typing.
This controls the extension’s requests for suggestions while you type. It does not, by itself, describe the state of other Copilot features or a repository-wide policy.
Eclipse, Vim and Neovim: use the integration’s current help
GitHub’s guide covers Eclipse and Vim/Neovim, but the detailed controls are integration-specific. If the menu, command or status indicator differs from the published wording, open the help for the Copilot integration installed in that editor and look for its inline-completion or suggestion setting.
Do not apply a VS Code setting name blindly to another editor. The github.copilot.enable map is the documented VS Code approach; other integrations may expose equivalent behavior through their own configuration.

Use the quick Copilot menu or status icon when you need to pause suggestions while investigating a file, reviewing generated code or concentrating on manual editing. Use the Settings page when you want to inspect the exact value and choose a user or workspace scope deliberately. Use the language map or language list when the requirement is selective rather than global.
Before closing the IDE, note which scope you changed. A user-level disable can follow you into unrelated projects, while a workspace-level disable may appear to have “stopped working” when you open a different project. This difference is expected behavior, not evidence that the Copilot extension ignored the setting.
Turning off suggestions is not the same as disabling Copilot
Inline completions are only one Copilot capability. Disabling them does not uninstall the extension or application and should not be described as disabling Copilot Chat, code review, instruction-file use or every other feature. GitHub documents these features and settings separately.
When you need a broader shutdown
If your requirement is to prevent Copilot use generally, check the extension or app state and the account or organization policy separately. A completion toggle is appropriate when the problem is distracting ghost text or unwanted code completion; it is not evidence that all Copilot access has been removed.

Verify that the change worked
- Open a file in a language that is supposed to be disabled.
- Type a new line or partial expression and wait briefly for the normal inline completion trigger.
- Confirm that no Copilot ghost-text suggestion appears.
- If you changed only one language, open a file in an enabled language and confirm that its behavior remains unchanged.
- Check the active settings scope if the result differs between projects.
Verification matters because a user setting, workspace setting and language override can produce different results. A language-specific entry may also override the default represented by the "*" key in VS Code.
Test after reopening the project if you changed workspace settings, and test another project if you changed user settings. For JetBrains, Visual Studio and Xcode, use the same language and editor where you made the change; a different integration can have its own independent completion state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a setting that appears not to work
Suggestions still appear everywhere
- Reopen the Copilot menu or status icon and verify that the global completion control is actually disabled.
- In VS Code, check Inline Suggest:Enable and the
github.copilot.enablemap; a language entry set totruecan allow suggestions even when you intended a narrower change. - Confirm that you edited the active user or workspace scope, not a different settings profile.
- Check whether another Copilot integration is installed in the editor and exposing its own control.
Only one language behaves unexpectedly
Review the language identifier used by the editor and compare it with the key in the VS Code map. The wildcard default does not replace a language-specific override. In JetBrains or Visual Studio, reopen the language list from the Copilot status control and verify the selected language rather than changing the global switch.
The menu wording does not match
IDE interfaces change over time. GitHub’s current Visual Studio instructions contain ambiguous button wording, and GitHub notes that JetBrains interfaces can differ from IntelliJ. Follow the location of the Copilot menu or status icon, then choose the live command that explicitly disables completions. Check the installed integration’s help when no such command is present.
A collaborator still receives suggestions
That result is expected if the change was made only in your local IDE or workspace. The documented settings do not establish central enforcement for every clone or editor. Share the desired procedure with collaborators or manage the requirement through the appropriate account or organization policy instead of treating a local toggle as a repository rule.
Accepted suggestions remain in the file
Turning off completions prevents new inline suggestions; it does not undo text that was already accepted. Review or remove existing code using your normal editor history and version-control workflow. Do not interpret remaining code as proof that the completion setting is still active.
Practical decision guide
| If you want to… | Use this control | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Stop all Copilot ghost text in your current VS Code session or scope | Copilot menu > Configure Inline Suggestions > Disable Completions, or clear Inline Suggest:Enable | Inline suggestions are disabled for that scope |
| Keep completions in code but stop them in YAML and plain text | VS Code github.copilot.enable language map |
Set yaml and plaintext to false while leaving the default as needed |
| Disable one language in a JetBrains IDE | Copilot status icon’s current-language option or Settings > Tools > GitHub Copilot > Completions | Only the selected language is changed |
| Disable completions in Visual Studio | Copilot status icon in the bottom panel | Choose global or current-language control from the live menu |
| Stop Xcode suggestions while typing | GitHub Copilot for Xcode > Advanced > Suggestion Settings | Turn off Request suggestions while typing |
| Change how instruction files are used | Repository custom-instruction or Copilot Chat instruction settings | Instruction behavior changes; inline completions remain a separate setting |
The reliable answer is therefore IDE-first: disable completions where the suggestions are generated, use language-specific controls when only part of a project needs quiet, and avoid promising that a repository file alone can enforce the choice for every contributor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I disable GitHub Copilot suggestions for only one language?
Yes. VS Code uses the github.copilot.enable map, where each language key can be true or false. JetBrains, Visual Studio and other integrations provide their own language-specific controls. Test an enabled and a disabled language after changing the setting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does a committed VS Code workspace setting disable Copilot for everyone who clones the repository?
No central enforcement is established by the documented IDE controls. A workspace setting can associate your preference with the project in your VS Code installation, but collaborators may use different editors, profiles, extensions or settings.
Best Value
Will disabling inline suggestions turn off Copilot Chat or code review?
No. Inline completions are a separate feature. Chat, code review and instruction-file behavior have separate controls, so disable or manage those independently if your requirement is broader than stopping ghost text.
What should I do if the VS Code Copilot menu is missing?
Open File > Preferences > Settings > Extensions > Copilot and look for Inline Suggest:Enable. If it is absent, confirm that the GitHub Copilot extension is installed and enabled, then verify the selected user or workspace settings scope and the installed extension version.
Why do suggestions still appear in one file after I changed the wildcard?
Check the file’s language identifier and every explicit language entry. A language key set to true can override an off-by-default or narrower configuration, while a key set to false can override the wildcard "*" value.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I disable Copilot completions in JetBrains?
Open the Copilot status icon in the bottom panel and choose Disable Completions globally or for the current language. For detailed language choices, use Settings > Tools > GitHub Copilot > Completions, apply the change and restart if prompted.
How do I disable Copilot suggestions in Visual Studio?
Open the Copilot status icon in the bottom panel and choose the global or current-language control shown by your installation. GitHub’s current guide has ambiguous wording for one menu choice, so follow the live menu and select the command whose meaning is clearly to disable completions.
How do I stop Copilot suggestions while typing in Xcode?
Open the GitHub Copilot for Xcode app, go to Advanced > Suggestion Settings, and turn off Request suggestions while typing.
Does turning off suggestions uninstall Copilot?
No. The completion toggle only changes inline suggestion behavior in that IDE scope. It does not uninstall the extension or app and does not automatically disable other Copilot features.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if a teammate still receives Copilot suggestions after I disabled them?
That is expected when the change was local to your IDE or workspace. Share the steps with teammates or use the relevant account or organization policy for a broader requirement; do not treat a local toggle as a repository-wide rule.
The Bottom Line
Disable Copilot completions in the IDE that displays them. In VS Code, use Configure Inline Suggestions > Disable Completions or clear Inline Suggest:Enable; use github.copilot.enable for language-specific choices. JetBrains and Visual Studio use their Copilot status icons, and Xcode uses GitHub Copilot for Xcode > Advanced > Suggestion Settings. Workspace settings and repository instruction files do not guarantee that every collaborator’s IDE will stop showing suggestions.
