How to Disable 802.11b on Your Wi-Fi Router Without Disconnecting Older Devices

You can disable 802.11b only if your router offers a 2.4 GHz wireless mode or rate setting that excludes it—and an older device that depends on 802.11b may then lose its connection. Check the router’s model-specific options, identify the devices that must stay online, and make the change reversible so you can restore the previous setting if needed.

What disabling 802.11b changes

802.11b is a legacy Wi-Fi standard for the 2.4 GHz band. On routers that expose individual supported rates, MikroTik lists 802.11b rates as 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps; those are standard rate values, not a promise of real-world throughput. Router mode labels vary, but options such as g/n or n-only may exclude b, while b/g/n includes it. Check the manual for your exact router and firmware before choosing.

A client that only supports or requires 802.11b may no longer join the network after b support is removed. A device described as “older” is not necessarily limited to b, so check its specifications or test it rather than assuming it will disconnect.

Find the right control on your router

  1. Identify the router and firmware. Find the model number and firmware version in the router’s admin interface or product label. Open the manufacturer’s support page or manual for that model.
  2. Open the 2.4 GHz wireless settings. Look for a setting named Wireless Mode, 802.11 Mode, Radio Mode, legacy/basic rates, or minimum data rate. The exact location and wording depend on the router.
  3. Choose an option that excludes b. If the router offers modes such as b/g/n and g/n, choose g/n only if the manual confirms it omits 802.11b. An n-only setting may also exclude b, but may rule out other clients that need g. If there is an explicit rate control, use it only when the manual explains which rates it disables.
  4. Save the change and test essential devices. Confirm that each older device you need can reconnect and use the network. If one cannot, restore the previous setting rather than leaving it disconnected.

There is no universal menu path. For example, D-Link’s instructions for the DIR-510L describe its own mode-change controls, while the D-Link M60 manual lists a 2.4 GHz “Mixed 802.11g/n” option alongside modes that include b. These are examples for specific products, not instructions for every router. See D-Link’s model-specific support information and the D-Link M60 manual.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Check compatibility before removing b

  • Inventory the devices that use 2.4 GHz. Check specifications or manufacturer support pages for computers, printers, cameras, smart-home products, and other clients that need to remain connected.
  • Distinguish “old” from “802.11b-only.” A device that supports g, n, or another compatible mode may still connect when b is disabled; only device-specific information or testing can establish that.
  • Keep access to the router. Make changes while you can reconnect to the admin interface, and note the original mode so you can undo the change if a client fails.
  • Use a separate network only if your router supports it. Check the manual and configure any additional network securely; not every router offers a separate legacy network.

Apple’s general guidance favors broad compatibility: “It’s usually best to enable every mode that’s offered by your router, rather than a subset of these modes.” Removing b is a trade-off, not a universal recommendation; apply it only after checking the clients that matter. Apple’s recommended Wi-Fi router settings explain its general advice.

Choose between a mode change and a rate setting

These controls are not interchangeable on every router. A mode change can affect which standards the 2.4 GHz radio accepts, while a rate control may remove selected legacy rates. Verify the effect in the documentation before applying either change.

Option What it can do Compatibility consideration
Leave all offered modes enabled Preserves the router’s available radio modes for clients to negotiate. Apple recommends this for broad compatibility; it does not disable b support.
Select g/n or n-only May exclude 802.11b, depending on the router’s mode definitions. Clients that need b—and, with n-only, clients that need g—may not connect. Confirm the exact effect in the router manual.
Disable specified b rates Can remove 802.11b rates where a router exposes a suitable control. Check which rates and clients are affected; labels and behavior differ by vendor and firmware.

Do not confuse 802.11b with Wi-Fi 6

802.11b is not another name for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). A router’s Wi-Fi 6 feature control changes a different capability; disabling it is not a substitute for excluding b and may reduce performance for newer devices. NETGEAR notes both the possible performance impact and that navigation varies by router model. Use the instructions for your own model, such as NETGEAR Support, rather than following a Wi-Fi 6 setting when your goal is to remove 802.11b.

If a device stops connecting

  1. Restore the original 2.4 GHz mode or rate setting, then check whether the device reconnects.
  2. If it does, consult the device specifications to determine whether it requires 802.11b or whether another router setting is responsible.
  3. If the device’s adapter is limited to legacy standards, a compatible 802.11n USB Wi-Fi adapter may be an option for some computers. Linksys discusses Wireless-N adapters as an upgrade possibility, but compatibility depends on the computer, operating system, drivers, and hardware. Check the computer manufacturer’s requirements before buying one. Linksys guidance on upgrading wireless clients.
