How to Digitize Your CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays for Personal Use

Digitizing a disc collection is two different jobs. For a CD, you extract each audio track into an audio file. For a DVD or Blu-ray, you read a supported disc or disc backup and usually transcode the video into a file such as MP4, MKV, or WebM. The workflows, software requirements, storage choices, and legal questions are not interchangeable.

You need a computer optical drive that reads the format in question, software appropriate to audio extraction or video conversion, and enough storage for the resulting files. HandBrake can convert supported DVD and Blu-ray sources, but it does not defeat copy protection and cannot process many protected commercial discs. Whether you may make a personal copy depends on the law where you live; owning the disc is not a universal permission to copy it or circumvent a technological protection measure.

What “digitizing” means for each disc type

The word digitize hides an important technical distinction:

Disc Primary task Typical result What changes
Audio CD Extract the tracks with CD-ripping software and a CD-capable optical drive. Separate audio files, organized by album and track. The audio is copied into the format and metadata you select; there is no video encoding step.
DVD Read a supported disc or backup, select the intended title, and convert the video. An MP4, MKV, WebM, or another format offered by the encoder. HandBrake always converts the video. It does not pass the video through unchanged.
Blu-ray Use a Blu-ray-reading drive, then open a supported disc or backup and convert the chosen title. A playable video file in the format and preset you choose. Conversion changes the representation and normally reduces the file size compared with an untouched disc structure.

Do not assume that one application handles all three formats equally well. Audio extraction software is designed around tracks, while video software is designed around titles, streams, subtitles, audio tracks, and encoding settings.

Equipment and software you need

Requirement Why it matters Check before you begin
Computer optical drive The drive must physically read the disc format. A CD collection needs a CD-reading drive; DVDs need DVD support; a Blu-ray collection needs a Blu-ray-reading drive.
Computer connection An internal drive or external USB drive must work with your computer and operating system. Confirm the connector, available power, and operating-system compatibility. No particular drive model has been validated here.
Audio-extraction software Creates files from CD tracks and lets you choose a file format and naming scheme. Use software that explicitly supports audio-CD extraction. The appropriate application and settings depend on your priorities.
Video transcoder Converts supported DVD and Blu-ray sources into convenient playback files. HandBrake is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows and accepts supported discs or disc backups.
Working storage Temporary files and final files need space while you process a disc. Leave more free space than the expected output so an encode can complete without filling the drive.
External storage or backup destination A collection can outgrow the computer’s internal disk. Choose capacity only after estimating your collection size and the output settings you intend to use.

An external USB Blu-ray drive is the practical hardware choice when a computer has no suitable optical drive and the collection includes Blu-rays. Verify that the drive reads the exact formats you own and works with your operating system. An external hard drive can store the resulting files, but its required capacity cannot be stated responsibly without knowing the number of discs and encoding choices.

Prepare the collection before converting anything

Inventory the discs

Make a simple list of the albums and films you intend to process. Mark discs that are damaged, part of a box set, or likely to contain several versions of the same program. For video, note whether the disc is a feature film, television season, concert, or bonus-content disc; this helps you recognize the correct title later.

Decide how files will be organized

Choose a stable folder structure before the first extraction. A music collection might use artist, album, and track folders. A video collection might use title and release-year folders, with separate folders for episodes or extras. Use names that your playback devices can display reliably, and keep a consistent convention for disc number, episode number, language, and edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan a two-copy strategy

Keep the working copy on the computer while processing, then place a second copy on separate storage when the files have been checked. Storage requirements depend on the number of discs, the amount of compression, and whether you retain any larger intermediate or backup files. Do not delete the physical discs merely because a conversion finished; retain them if you may need to correct metadata, create another format, or recover from storage failure, subject to the law where you live.

How to digitize audio CDs

1. Choose an extraction application

Select software that identifies an audio CD and extracts its tracks rather than treating the disc as a folder of ordinary files. The available applications and their exact lossless or compressed settings were not established here, so choose based on the formats your players support, the storage you have, and whether you want smaller files or an archive-oriented copy.

2. Insert the CD and let the software read its track layout

Insert the disc into the optical drive and open the extraction program. It should show the track count and durations. If the program reports an unreadable disc, clean the disc, try another drive, and inspect whether the disc is badly scratched. Do not infer that a disc is blank simply because a file browser does not show conventional audio files; an audio CD is read through track-aware software.

3. Select the output format and quality goal

Pick an audio format that works on the devices and applications you use. A larger, archive-oriented choice preserves more information for future conversions; a more compressed choice saves space and may be convenient for phones or portable players. The right setting is a personal storage decision, not a universal recommendation. Record the setting in your inventory so later files remain consistent.

4. Set metadata and filenames

Enter or verify the artist, album, track title, track number, disc number, release information, and genre. Check punctuation and capitalization before starting a large batch. If the disc is part of a multi-disc set, include the disc number in both the folder and the metadata to prevent tracks from being mixed together.

5. Extract, inspect, and back up

Start the extraction and wait for the application to report completion. Open several tracks, including the first and last, and listen for skips, clicks, or truncated endings. Confirm that the number of output files matches the number of tracks and that the filenames sort in playing order. Copy the verified folder to your backup storage before moving on.

How to digitize DVDs and Blu-rays with HandBrake

HandBrake’s documentation describes it as an open-source transcoder for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It can open supported DVD and Blu-ray discs or disc backups and convert them to MP4, MKV, or WebM. It is not a universal disc-ripping or decryption utility.

1. Confirm that the source is supported

Install HandBrake from its official distribution for your operating system, connect the optical drive, and insert the disc. You can also work from a disc backup in a supported folder or file structure. Compatibility varies by source, so a backup that opens on one system may not open identically on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open the source

Launch HandBrake and use its source-selection screen to choose the optical disc or the backup folder. Allow the scan to finish. The scan can take time because the program is examining the disc structure and available titles.

3. Select the intended title

Video discs often contain multiple titles: the main feature, menus, trailers, alternate cuts, episodes, and bonus material. Review each title’s duration and, where available, chapter information before selecting one. For a television season, repeat the process for each episode rather than assuming the longest title is always the desired program.

4. Choose a preset for the playback device

Presets balance compatibility, picture quality, output size, and encoding time. Select one that matches the devices or software that will play the file. A broadly compatible preset may be easier to use across computers and televisions; a more demanding preset can require more processing time or limit playback compatibility. Treat the preset as a practical starting point, then test a short sample if the application allows it.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

5. Set the destination and optional tracks

Choose a destination folder with enough free space and give the file a descriptive name. Select the audio language, subtitle tracks, and chapters you actually need. Keeping every available stream makes files and menus more complicated; removing a language or subtitle you will never use can simplify the library. Be careful with forced subtitles or scenes that require a particular subtitle track.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Start the encode

Begin the conversion and leave the computer powered and awake until it finishes. Encoding time varies with the source, preset, computer, and whether you queue several titles. HandBrake is converting the video, not making a bit-for-bit copy, so the output will not preserve the original disc structure or menus.

7. Verify the result

Play the beginning, a middle section, and the ending. Check dialogue, music, aspect ratio, chapter navigation, subtitles, and audio-language selection. Confirm that the file opens on the device for which it was prepared. If it fails there, try a more compatible preset rather than repeatedly copying the same file.

Choosing between larger and smaller video files

Every HandBrake output is a conversion. The practical choice is how much quality, compatibility, storage, and time you want to trade against one another.

Output approach Expected playback compatibility File size Encoding time Does it convert the video?
Higher-quality encode Good when the target player supports the selected format and settings; advanced settings can reduce compatibility. Larger than a heavily compressed encode. Often longer because more data is retained or more demanding settings are used. Yes. HandBrake always converts.
Smaller compressed encode Can be convenient for modern players, but aggressive settings may expose compatibility or quality limits. Smaller, saving storage and transfer time. Depends on the preset and computer; smaller output is not automatically faster to create. Yes.
Untouched disc or disc backup Preserves the original structure, but playback software must support that structure. Usually much larger than a compressed file. No HandBrake encode is required if you are only retaining the backup. No conversion occurs in the backup itself.

If your priority is viewing on several ordinary devices, start with a compatibility-oriented preset. If your priority is conserving disk space, choose a smaller encode and accept that you are trading away some flexibility and possibly some visual detail. If preserving menus, original streams, or future re-encoding options matters most, retaining a lawful disc backup is a different workflow from creating a convenient playback file.

Can HandBrake copy a protected DVD or Blu-ray?

No. HandBrake’s documentation states that it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and that many protected commercial DVDs and Blu-rays will not work. A disc may be physically readable yet still fail during scanning because its protection or structure is unsupported.

Do not treat a failed scan as an invitation to search for decryption instructions. Protection is both a technical barrier and a legal issue. Use HandBrake only with sources it can lawfully process without bypassing protection, such as an unprotected disc or a compatible backup whose creation and use are permitted where you live.

Is making a personal copy allowed where I live?

There is no worldwide answer. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules differ by country, by the type of work, and by the action you take. The following examples are jurisdiction-specific summaries, not legal advice.

United States

U.S. copyright law gives copyright owners exclusive rights, while anti-circumvention regulations list defined exemptions. Those exemptions are not a blanket permission to make personal copies of every CD, DVD, or Blu-ray, and they do not establish that owning a disc authorizes bypassing its protection. Check the current rules for your exact use and seek qualified legal advice if the distinction matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canada

Canada’s Copyright Act contains a personal-use reproduction provision with conditions. The source copy must have been legally obtained, and the provision does not permit circumventing a technological protection measure. A legally purchased disc therefore does not automatically answer every copying question, particularly when protection is involved.

United Kingdom

UK legislation pages include format-shifting language in statutory text, but the personal-copy regulation was quashed by the High Court in 2015. Do not describe the UK as having a current general right to copy discs for personal use based solely on that older wording. Check the law that applies now and the circumstances of your proposed copy.

Everywhere else

Rules in other countries may differ again, and residence, source, household use, backups, and technological protection can change the analysis. If your country is not covered above, consult its current copyright statute or a qualified local adviser before copying or bypassing protection.

Troubleshooting common problems

The computer does not see the drive

  • Reconnect the USB cable directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • Try another USB port, check external power, and restart the computer.
  • Confirm that the drive’s specifications match the disc type; a DVD drive cannot read a Blu-ray.

The disc opens, but the wanted program is missing

  • Wait for the source scan to finish completely.
  • Review all titles and compare durations and chapters.
  • Try opening a compatible disc backup if the physical disc is unreadable, provided making and using that backup is lawful.

The output is too large

  • Choose a more storage-efficient preset or output format.
  • Remove audio languages, subtitle tracks, and extras you do not need.
  • Process one representative title first and measure its resulting size before committing the entire collection.

The file will not play on a target device

  • Use a preset designed for that device or a more broadly compatible format.
  • Check that the device supports the file container, video codec, audio codec, and subtitle type.
  • Test a short encode before converting a long film or an entire season.

Video plays but audio or subtitles are wrong

  • Reopen the source and select the intended audio language and subtitle tracks.
  • Check whether subtitles are optional or forced for particular scenes.
  • Verify the result at several points in the program, not only at the opening.

HandBrake reports protection or cannot scan the disc

  • Assume the source may be protected or unsupported rather than repeatedly changing presets.
  • Do not use HandBrake as a decryption tool; it does not bypass copy protection.
  • Confirm that your intended copy is lawful in your jurisdiction before taking any further action.

A repeatable workflow for a large collection

  1. Inventory the discs and decide which titles, episodes, tracks, languages, and subtitles you need.
  2. Test one CD, one DVD, and one Blu-ray, if you own all three, using the drives and software you plan to keep.
  3. Record the chosen audio format or video preset, folder naming convention, and metadata rules.
  4. Process a small batch rather than loading every disc into a queue immediately.
  5. Verify each output by opening it and checking representative sections, then copy the verified files to separate storage.
  6. Keep an inventory of completed discs and note any source that requires a second attempt or a different drive.
  7. Review the legal position in your jurisdiction before making copies, especially where a technological protection measure is present.

When a transfer service may be more practical

Doing the work yourself gives you control over file names, formats, subtitles, and storage, but it also requires a compatible drive, free disk space, time for scanning and encoding, and a plan for backups. A local media-transfer or disc-digitization service may suit someone who lacks the hardware or does not want to manage queues and troubleshooting. Ask any service exactly what it will copy, whether it handles protected media, what file formats it supplies, how it returns the files, and whether the service’s process is lawful for your location. No particular provider or program is established here.

Key decisions before you start

  • Disc type: Use a CD extraction workflow for music CDs and a video-transcoding workflow for DVDs and Blu-rays.
  • Drive fit: Match the optical drive to the formats in your collection, with Blu-ray support required for Blu-ray discs.
  • Output goal: Larger video encodes preserve more data; smaller encodes save storage but still involve conversion.
  • Playback target: Choose a preset based on the devices that must play the files, not only on the computer doing the encoding.
  • Protection: HandBrake does not bypass copy protection, and a failed scan may be a technical and legal boundary.
  • Law: Verify the rules in your jurisdiction; possession of a disc is not universal evidence of a right to copy or circumvent protection.
