To digitize a cassette, play it on a clean, working deck and record its line-level output to a computer or USB audio interface. First inspect the tape: if it is dirty, shedding debris, jammed, or visibly damaged, do not play it—seek help from an audio-preservation specialist. For tapes safe to transfer, make an unprocessed WAV capture before editing, create a separate listening copy, document what is known about the recording, and keep separate backup copies.

1. Check whether the cassette is safe to play

Playback can damage magnetic tape, so inspect the shell and the tape visible through its window before loading it. Handle the cassette by its shell; do not touch the tape itself. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) cautions that any tape can be damaged during playback and recommends limiting plays and prioritizing important recordings. Its guidance recommends reformatting audio tapes older than 15 years; that is an age-based preservation recommendation, not a prediction that a particular tape will fail.

  • Stop and seek specialist advice if the cassette is visibly dirty, dusty, contaminated, shedding debris, jammed, has loose tape, or cannot move normally in its case.
  • For a cassette that appears intact, plan one careful transfer rather than repeated test plays. If it is especially valuable or fragile, professional transfer is the safer option.
  • Store tapes in their cases, upright on edge, away from strong magnetic fields, high humidity, and rapid temperature changes. NARA’s archival guidance recommends 30–40% relative humidity and 50–65°F for magnetic tape collections; these are collection-storage recommendations, not a requirement to install climate-control equipment in every home.

2. Choose a playback and recording setup

You need a cassette deck that plays the tape reliably and a way to record its audio on a computer. Two practical setups are a conventional deck connected to an audio interface, or a USB cassette deck. Neither is proven to sound better in every case by the cited guidance; the deck’s condition, correct connections, and playback settings matter.

Setup What connects When it may fit
Conventional cassette deck plus USB audio interface Deck’s RCA line outputs connect to the interface’s line inputs; the interface connects to the computer over USB. You already have a working deck, or want an interface that can also record other line-level sources.
USB cassette deck The deck connects directly to the computer by USB and appears as an audio input device. You want a simpler connection and have verified that the device works with your computer and recording software.

Check the deck manual, computer inputs, and connector types before buying anything. A computer microphone input is not necessarily a suitable substitute for a line input. If your computer has no appropriate line input, use an external USB interface that accepts line-level audio. Audacity documents both USB cassette devices and conventional line connections; it advises selecting the actual recording device and matching the channel setting to the source.

If the cassette is marked Dolby, enable the corresponding Dolby playback setting on the deck. Audacity warns that playing a Dolby-encoded tape without the matching setting can make it sound too bright. Clean and maintain the deck’s heads and tape path according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not attempt to clean or repair a questionable cassette as a substitute for specialist assessment.

3. Make a short test, then capture the tape

  1. Connect the deck to the recording input. In your recording software, select the connected USB interface or USB cassette deck, not an unrelated built-in microphone. Confirm the channel setting matches the source.
  2. Record a brief test passage. Play a short section and watch the input meter. If the peaks clip, lower the input level and test again. Audacity’s sample workflow recommends a maximum peak around −6 dB; this is its workflow guidance for avoiding clipping, not a universal requirement.
  3. Capture the source before editing. Record each cassette side, either in one file with clear side boundaries or in separate files. Do not apply noise reduction or cut out pauses in your only copy.
  4. Save an unprocessed WAV file. Audacity’s sample workflow uses a 32-bit float WAV as a raw capture that can be brought back into an editing project. This is an example workflow, not a mandatory household setting. Keep the untouched capture separate from later edited or compressed files.

Listen to the test and the resulting capture to confirm that sound is present, the correct channels were recorded, and the recording has not been cut off. Noise reduction is optional; the result depends on the tape, playback alignment, clean heads, and correct Dolby setting. Software cannot restore audio that was never captured or repair physically damaged tape.

4. Make listening copies and preserve the recording’s context

Keep the unprocessed capture as your source file. From it, make a more convenient listening copy if needed. NARA distinguishes high-quality, minimally compressed preservation copies from more compressed access copies intended for everyday playback. If you use a transfer service, ask what files it will deliver and whether it can provide both kinds.

Use an open audio format where possible, and give files names that make sense without relying on memory. Include known details such as the original cassette label, recording date, people, place, digitization date, and side or sequence. Mark uncertainty plainly—for example, “date unknown; probably late 1970s”—rather than presenting a guess as fact. Add a short text or PDF note describing the collection and how the digital files relate to the original tapes.

The Library of Congress says its institutional recorded-sound transfers use 96 kHz/24-bit broadcast WAV. That describes its collection practice, not a necessary setting for a home transfer; choose settings you understand and can preserve, and retain an unprocessed source capture.

5. Back up the files and check them over time

Keep at least two copies in separate physical locations—for example, one on a computer or external drive and another in a different location. A second copy stored beside the first does not protect against the same theft, fire, or other local damage. The Library of Congress recommends checking that saved audio files remain readable at least once a year and making new media copies every five years or as needed. These practices reduce risk; no storage medium or schedule guarantees permanent preservation.

When to use a professional transfer service

Choose professional help if a tape is fragile, valuable, dirty, damaged, or difficult to play, or if you do not have reliable playback equipment. NARA points to the ARSC Audio Preservation and Restoration Directory and the American Institute for Conservation’s conservator search for finding specialists. Ask a provider what preservation and listening files it supplies, how it documents the tapes, and whether it will return the originals.
