How to Diagnose Power-Supply Instability Caused by Capacitor Problems

Capacitors can cause excessive ripple, voltage droop and intermittent resets when their capacitance, ESR, ripple-current capability or connections have degraded. Those symptoms are not proof of a bad capacitor: upstream input drops, changing loads, regulator-loop instability, layout parasitics and measurement errors can look identical. Diagnose the input, output and time-dependent behavior first, then inspect or replace capacitors only when the circuit evidence supports it.

What capacitor-related power-supply instability looks like

A failing capacitor may be associated with a supply that has output ripple above its specification, startup trouble, oscillation, voltage sag during load changes, audible switching noise, intermittent resets or a fault that appears only after warm-up. In an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, electrolyte loss and heat-related aging can reduce useful capacitance and increase equivalent series resistance (ESR). Ripple current flowing through ESR produces heat, which can accelerate that aging.

These symptoms are conditional clues, not a diagnosis. A converter with an unstable feedback loop can oscillate even when its capacitors are healthy. A load that changes abruptly can create a normal transient that is being mistaken for a fault. An upstream AC or DC input drop can make a good supply report an error. The correct question is whether the measured behavior matches the supply and rail specifications under the actual load and operating conditions.

How capacitors influence ripple and regulation

In a switching supply, the output capacitor network works with the inductor and control loop to turn pulsed energy into a usable DC rail. Output-voltage ripple is the AC component riding on the DC output, as defined by Texas Instruments in its ripple-measurement guidance.

  • Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
  • Capacitance: stores charge between switching pulses. Less effective capacitance generally allows greater voltage change during a load or switching interval.
  • ESR: creates an immediate voltage step when ripple current flows. Higher ESR also dissipates more power as heat.
  • Parasitic inductance and resistance: package leads, vias, traces and probe connections shape high-frequency spikes that may not originate inside the capacitor.
  • Ripple-current rating: specifies how much alternating current the part can handle without exceeding its thermal limits at stated conditions.
  • Control-loop interaction: the converter’s compensation is designed around a range of capacitance and impedance. Changing ESR or substituting a very-low-ESR part can move the loop outside its stable range.

Analog Devices explains that an unstable or marginally stable supply can oscillate and increase ripple, voltage, current and thermal stress, potentially damaging the supply and its load. Its loop-stability article discusses Bode-plot analysis for design work; a field diagnosis does not require a Bode analyzer in every case.

Ripple-current heating is also a design concern. The Analog Devices discussion of effective capacitor ripple current shows why current through a capacitor’s impedance matters thermally. It does not establish a universal lifetime or failure rate for every capacitor family.

Tools, measurement points and safety

Tool What it can reveal Important limitation
Digital multimeter Basic input and output DC voltage, resistance or continuity checks when de-energized Often averages ripple and can miss short disturbances; a normal reading at one instant does not clear an intermittent fault
Oscilloscope with suitable probe Ripple waveform, switching spikes, load transients, oscillation and events over time Probe ground leads, bandwidth and measurement location can create or exaggerate apparent ripple
Trend or event logging Slow drift, warm-up failures and intermittent input/output disturbances Requires a defined sampling interval and a trigger or logging method that can capture the event
Capacitance or ESR tester Component-level clues after isolation or removal In-circuit readings are affected by parallel components, semiconductor paths and operating frequency; there is no universal ESR pass/fail number

De-energize the equipment before touching components or making resistance, capacitance or ESR measurements. Primary-side circuits connected to mains can retain hazardous energy and may be referenced directly to the line. Do not probe an energized mains-referenced primary circuit unless you are trained, have the correct differential or isolated measurement equipment and can follow the manufacturer’s service procedure. If you cannot establish a safe measurement method, use a qualified technician.

Step-by-step diagnostic workflow

1. Record exactly when the problem occurs

Write down the symptom, rail or output involved, load state, ambient conditions, warm-up time and whether cycling power temporarily restores operation. Note whether the failure occurs at startup, during a heavy load, when a motor or radio transmits, or only after the unit has been operating for minutes. Capture the supply’s specified input range, output tolerance and load limits from its documentation. This baseline prevents a normal operating transient from being labeled a capacitor failure.

2. Check the upstream input before blaming the PSU

Measure the voltage at the supply input while the fault is present, not only at an idle moment. For an AC-fed supply, check for a drop at the outlet and at the supply terminals; for a DC-fed converter, measure the source and the converter input under the same load. A loose connector, undersized cable, battery sag or upstream protection device can reduce the input enough to trigger a legitimate shutdown. Fluke’s troubleshooting example, “Beyond the multimeter, part 5”, demonstrates how an upstream AC-input drop can produce a supply error even when the supply is not the root cause.

Use a meter’s minimum/maximum or logging function when available, and leave it connected long enough to include the failure. If the input changes at the same instant as the output fault, investigate the source, wiring and protection first.

3. Verify the output with a multimeter

Measure directly at the specified output terminals and, when relevant, at the load connector. Compare the result with the manufacturer’s tolerance at the actual load. Check every rail that participates in the reset or fault, because one marginal auxiliary rail can disable a system whose main output looks normal. A DMM is useful for DC level and gross droop, but its display may average away a high-frequency ripple burst or a millisecond-long reset event.

4. Observe ripple and transients with an oscilloscope

Use a short ground connection or an appropriate spring ground rather than a long alligator-clip lead. Set a bandwidth limit when the specification calls for one, and use consistent vertical scale, time base and probe attenuation. Measure at a defined output point, preferably where the rail is specified or where the load connects.

When diagnosing the regulator input, measure at the input capacitor closest to the regulator IC. A reading at a distant connector can include trace inductance and shared-current effects that the IC does not see. Analog Devices’ switch-mode power-supply measurement guide explains why probe configuration and board location materially affect small-ripple readings.

First check the same point with the probe tip and ground arranged for minimum loop area. Then, if possible, short the probe tip to its ground reference to see how much pickup the setup itself produces. Distinguish periodic switching ripple, load-step response, random spikes and low-frequency oscillation. A single clean capture cannot rule out an event that occurs only after warm-up or during a particular load transition; use persistence, single-shot triggering or logging to capture intermittent behavior.

5. Compare no-load, normal-load and worst-case-load conditions

Record input voltage, DC output, peak-to-peak ripple and transient behavior at several controlled load levels. If ripple rises sharply with load, compare the result with the capacitor’s ripple-current stress, the converter’s rated current and thermal conditions. If an instability appears only with a particular load or cable, examine load transients, remote-sense wiring and output-network impedance rather than assuming the capacitor itself is defective.

6. Inspect components only after power is removed

Look for bulging or vented tops, leaked electrolyte, discoloration, cracked seals, lifted pads and mechanically loose parts. Such evidence strengthens the case for replacement, but a capacitor can be electrically degraded without visible damage. Discharge procedures, isolation requirements and board-specific service instructions take precedence over a visual inspection.

For a component test, isolate at least one terminal when parallel circuitry would corrupt the reading. Compare capacitance and ESR with the component’s data-sheet limits and with a known-good part tested at the same frequency and temperature. Treat an in-circuit “good” reading cautiously: semiconductors, transformers and parallel capacitors can make the result appear normal.

How to interpret common measurement patterns

Observed pattern Capacitor-related possibility Other explanations to check
DC output is low and ripple is elevated under load Reduced capacitance, increased ESR, insufficient ripple-current capability or a poor connection Input sag, overload, current limiting, rectifier or switch failure, excessive wiring drop
Output is normal cold but degrades after warm-up Temperature-sensitive ESR increase, drying electrolyte or a marginal solder joint Thermal shutdown, semiconductor drift, fan or airflow problem, control-loop margin changing with temperature
Periodic oscillation appears on the scope Capacitor impedance outside the regulator’s stable range Loop-compensation fault, incorrect feedback components, layout parasitics or a load interaction
One sharp spike appears only with a long probe ground Not established Probe-loop pickup or measurement artifact; repeat with a short ground connection
Fault coincides with a brief input drop Input capacitor stress may be present, but the input disturbance is the immediate trigger Upstream source, connector, cable, fuse, battery or line disturbance
Meter readings look normal but the system resets Short ripple or transient event remains possible Reset supervisor, digital-control issue, electromagnetic interference, software or a load event

Do not apply a single “acceptable ripple” number to every supply. Limits depend on the rail, converter topology, measurement bandwidth, load and the manufacturer’s specification. Compare like with like: the same test point, bandwidth and operating condition used by the relevant design or service documentation.

Separating capacitor faults from regulator and load problems

Input disturbance

If the input falls before the output responds, the supply may be correctly reacting to an upstream problem. Test the source at the supply terminals during the event and inspect connectors, cable resistance and protection devices.

Changing or abnormal load

A load can demand a current step beyond the converter’s control bandwidth or current limit. Temporarily substitute a controlled electronic load, disconnect nonessential branches and repeat the test. If the instability follows the original load, investigate that load’s startup surge, short circuit, switching behavior and local bypassing.

Feedback-loop or compensation instability

A regulator can oscillate with capacitors that are within their nominal capacitance but have the wrong ESR range, or after a design change that altered the output network. Check the controller data sheet and reference design for permitted capacitance, ESR and compensation components. A Bode plot or injection test is an engineering verification method when ordinary voltage and ripple checks cannot explain the behavior; it is not a universal field-repair requirement.

Layout and parasitics

Long current paths, poor grounding, cracked vias and shared return impedance can add inductance or resistance that appears as ripple. Compare measurements at the capacitor terminals, regulator pins and load connector. A large difference between those points is evidence to examine the layout and connections, not proof that one capacitor has failed.

Choosing a replacement capacitor correctly

Replace a part only after the diagnosis and the circuit documentation agree. Capacitance alone is not a sufficient substitute specification.

Requirement What to match Why it matters
Capacitance Nominal value and permitted tolerance over temperature and bias Changes ripple, transient response and loop behavior
Voltage rating At least the design’s required working voltage, including transients and derating Insufficient rating risks leakage, venting or failure
Polarity Correct polarized or non-polarized construction and orientation Reverse connection can cause rapid damage
ESR and impedance Frequency- and temperature-dependent behavior allowed by the regulator Too high increases ripple and heat; unexpectedly low ESR can reduce stability margin
Ripple-current rating At the relevant frequency and ambient-temperature condition Determines internal heating under switching current
Temperature and lifetime Rated temperature, endurance and expected operating temperature Heat accelerates electrolyte aging and shortens service life
Mechanical fit Diameter, height, lead spacing, mounting, clearance and vibration suitability A correct electrical value that cannot be mounted safely is not a valid replacement

“Low ESR” is not a universal improvement. Some converters require a defined ESR window for loop stability, while others specify a minimum or maximum output capacitance. Follow the original bill of materials, service manual or regulator data sheet. If the documentation is unavailable, obtain the exact part data and consult a qualified power-electronics technician rather than guessing from capacitance and voltage markings.

When replacement is justified—and when to stop

  • Replacement is well supported when the capacitor shows physical damage and the measured rail behavior agrees with the circuit specification.
  • Replacement is also reasonable when isolated measurements show capacitance, ESR or leakage outside the manufacturer’s limits, with the test performed at a suitable temperature and frequency.
  • Do not replace capacitors solely because a waveform looks unusual until probe grounding, bandwidth, measurement location, input stability and load conditions have been checked.
  • Stop and obtain specialist help when the fault is on a mains-referenced primary, when stored energy cannot be verified as discharged, or when the supply’s feedback and protection circuits require energized probing.

A disciplined diagnosis identifies whether the disturbance starts at the input, inside the converter or at the load; captures the event with an appropriate measurement setup; and then checks the capacitor against the design’s electrical, thermal and mechanical requirements. That process avoids both missed capacitor failures and unnecessary parts replacement.
