How to Diagnose Performance Regressions After a Runtime Rewrite

A slower result is not proof that a runtime rewrite caused a regression. First establish a repeatable difference against a named baseline, then identify which workloads and metrics changed, and finally use differential profiles and execution traces to find the extra work or waiting. Keep the old and rewritten runtimes, inputs, build settings, hardware or VM conditions, and measurement method fixed while you investigate.

Start with three separate questions

Performance investigations become confused when they treat one timing as both evidence and explanation. Separate the work into three questions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Is the regression repeatable? Can the rewritten runtime be measured as slower than the previous implementation under the same conditions, with uncertainty small enough to support a decision?
  • Which workloads or metrics regressed? A suite average can improve while a latency-sensitive or high-volume workload gets substantially worse.
  • What changed in execution? Did the runtime perform more CPU work, allocate more memory, wait longer, schedule goroutines differently, or serialize a formerly parallel path?

Answer them in that order. If the comparison itself moved, profiling the new runtime will explain the wrong experiment. If the regression is real but limited to one workload, an aggregate score can hide the practical impact. If the affected metric is waiting time, a CPU profile alone may never show the cause.

Define a trustworthy comparison before running tests

Name the baseline and candidate

Treat the rewrite as an experiment and the prior implementation as its baseline. Give both builds stable names and preserve the exact source revision, runtime and compiler versions, build flags, configuration files, and dependency revisions. A graph labeled only “old” and “new” is difficult to audit after either branch moves.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Run both builds against the same workload definition and inputs. Relative measurements are more useful than isolated numbers because machine and virtual-machine state can differ between days. A result such as “the candidate took 1.2 seconds” says little without the baseline measured under comparable conditions.

Freeze the execution environment

Record the processor or VM type, operating-system image, available CPUs, memory limits, frequency or power settings when they are controlled, and relevant background load. Keep the harness, test data, request mix, concurrency, warm-up policy, and measurement units unchanged. If the old and new runs use different machines, treat that as a confounding variable rather than silently attributing the difference to the rewrite.

Store the benchmark-suite revision alongside every result. A benchmark definition, fixture, input generator, or default configuration can change independently of the runtime. The same label on a dashboard does not guarantee the same work.

Check that the baseline has not drifted

Before drawing a causal conclusion, inspect the benchmark definitions, test inputs, build configuration, runtime versions, and baseline labels. A moving baseline can create an apparent step change even when the rewritten runtime is unchanged. Look for changes in request size, data-set cardinality, enabled features, compiler optimization settings, garbage-collection parameters, and concurrency limits.

Use a clean checkout or an immutable build artifact for each side of the comparison. If a benchmark was edited after the last baseline result, rerun the baseline with the current benchmark before comparing it with the candidate.

Build a workload set that can reveal the regression

Cover user-visible end-to-end work

Include the operations users actually depend on: complete request paths, representative batch jobs, startup or deployment flows, and sustained service behavior where those are relevant. End-to-end tests expose interactions among parsing, scheduling, I/O, allocation, and runtime services that a tiny loop can miss.

Add focused benchmarks for likely hot paths

Pair the end-to-end cases with small tests for suspected areas such as dispatch, synchronization, allocation, garbage collection, or interpreter and compiler transitions. Focused tests make a changed code path easier to localize, while end-to-end tests tell you whether the change matters to users.

  • measure work that matters to users or maintainers;
  • run without a customized build process that makes reproduction difficult;
  • finish quickly enough for practical repetition where possible;
  • avoid gratuitous noise and unstable external dependencies; and
  • avoid duplicating an existing test without adding a distinct signal.

Benchmark suites should evolve as software and user priorities change. Add a test when a newly important workload is missing, and remove or revise one that no longer represents real work. Changing the suite is legitimate, but record the change so a dashboard does not present a new workload as a historical regression.

Measure repeatedly and preserve uncertainty

Do not trust a single timing

One run can be distorted by a scheduler decision, a background process, cache state, thermal behavior, or a transient VM event. Run enough iterations to characterize the benchmark’s variability and use the same procedure for both builds. The appropriate count depends on the workload and its noise; there is no universal run count or cross-runtime regression threshold.

Keep the individual observations, not only an average. Distributions reveal whether the candidate is consistently slower, has a longer tail, or occasionally stalls. For latency-sensitive work, report a suitable percentile in addition to a central estimate; for throughput, retain the units and direction so readers can tell whether a larger or smaller value is better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a statistical comparison

The Go team’s profile-guided-optimization example used 40 benchmark iterations per build and compared them with benchstat. On one Markdown service workload running on an Intel Xeon W-2135, that example reported 3.83% lower sec/op for the PGO build, with p=0.000 and n=40. This is a result for that workload, machine, and optimization experiment—not an expected benefit from a runtime rewrite and not a universal threshold for declaring a regression.

A statistically clear difference can still be operationally unimportant, while a large difference with high variance may need more investigation. Set a decision rule appropriate to the workload: for example, combine statistical evidence with a user-impact threshold agreed before looking at the result. Document the rule rather than adopting a percentage from another project.

Keep the comparison relative

Report the candidate relative to the named baseline and include absolute units. Relative change communicates direction across machines; absolute values show whether the change is meaningful for the service or job. Include the sample count and uncertainty summary with every headline result.

Compare the metrics that matter

A runtime can trade one resource for another. Compare the user-relevant outcome and the resources that explain it, and break out important workloads instead of publishing only one aggregate.

Comparison area Examples of useful measurements Question answered
User outcome Throughput or latency for each representative workload Did the work users request become slower or less capable?
CPU activity CPU time and sampled profile cost Is the runtime doing more active work?
Memory behavior Memory consumption and allocation-related measurements appropriate to the runtime Did the rewrite increase resource pressure or trigger more runtime work?
Concurrency and waiting Blocked time, scheduling behavior, and queue or synchronization effects Is elapsed time growing while threads or goroutines are not executing?

Use a geometric mean only as a suite-level summary when the workloads are comparable and the aggregation is explained. The Go guidance asks two separate questions: did the geometric mean improve, and did any benchmark become substantially worse? Answer both. A severe regression in a high-volume endpoint must remain visible even if many small benchmarks improve.

Dashboards should order regressions and improvements and identify results without a statistically clear answer separately. Do not turn an inconclusive result into a green or red verdict.

Localize extra active work with differential CPU profiles

Capture equivalent work, not merely equal elapsed time

Capture CPU profiles for the old and rewritten runtimes while they perform equivalent work. If one run processes fewer requests or records less input, its profile is not a fair comparison. The Go profiling guidance emphasizes matching the amount of work rather than simply collecting samples for the same number of seconds.

Keep profile collection settings and workload phases consistent. A profile taken during warm-up, compilation, or cache population should not be compared with a steady-state profile unless those phases are the subject of the test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the differential view

A differential profile subtracts the baseline from the candidate and highlights where sampled CPU time rose or fell. Inspect both flat cost (time attributed directly to a function) and cumulative cost (time attributed to that function and its callees). Absolute flat and cumulative differences are more informative than percentages when a baseline value is small or zero.

  • An increase in flat cost points to code that itself became more expensive or is being invoked more often.
  • An increase in cumulative cost points to a call path whose total work grew, even if the immediate function did not change.
  • A decrease in one path paired with an increase in another can indicate a scheduling, dispatch, allocation, or fallback change rather than a simple slowdown in one function.

Map the largest differences back to the rewrite. Check whether a new conversion, lock, allocation, bounds check, instrumentation path, or compatibility fallback is responsible. Confirm the hypothesis with a focused benchmark or a controlled change; a profile identifies where samples accumulated, not by itself why the code changed.

Use execution traces when the CPU profile is quiet

Recognize the blocked-time blind spot

CPU profiles sample active execution. They can under-represent the cause of a slow request when workers are blocked on channels, locks, timers, I/O, or scheduler decisions. If elapsed time rises without a corresponding increase in CPU samples, investigate waiting and concurrency rather than searching only for a hotter function.

Inspect scheduling and blocking behavior

An execution trace can show when goroutines are runnable, running, or blocked, and which stacks are associated with waits. Compare equivalent work in the old and new runtimes and look for longer queues, changed wake-up patterns, increased synchronization, or a loss of parallelism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Michael Knyszek described the diagnostic value of this view in the Go team’s 14 March 2024 article, “More powerful Go execution traces”: “But in an execution trace, the lack of execution will show up with amazing clarity, and the stack traces of blocked goroutines will quickly point at the culprit.” A trace is especially valuable when many goroutines contend for a shared channel or other synchronization point that would be difficult to diagnose from CPU samples alone.

Connect trace evidence to the workload metric

Mark the phase or request that experienced the regression, then follow its scheduling timeline. A longer blocked interval matters only if it aligns with the increased latency or reduced throughput. Use the trace to form a testable explanation—such as a changed wake-up order or serialized critical section—and validate it with a focused benchmark.

Work through a repeatable diagnostic sequence

  1. Write the experiment definition. Name the baseline and candidate revisions, workload, input data, hardware or VM, build flags, runtime and compiler versions, and measurement units.
  2. Validate the harness. Confirm that benchmark code, fixtures, configuration, warm-up, concurrency, and suite revision are identical or intentionally versioned.
  3. Run representative workloads. Include end-to-end user work and focused tests for likely hot paths. Keep the same execution procedure for both builds.
  4. Repeat and retain raw observations. Record enough iterations to expose variability, along with sample count, central values, distributions, and statistical comparisons.
  5. Separate clear, unclear, and severe results. Mark statistically unclear results as such, report suite aggregates, and list every materially worse workload.
  6. Capture comparable CPU profiles. Match the amount of work, compare flat and cumulative differences, and rank the largest absolute increases.
  7. Capture an execution trace for waiting symptoms. Use it when elapsed time increased without matching CPU activity or when scheduling and synchronization are suspected.
  8. Test the explanation. Reproduce the suspected path with a focused benchmark, a controlled configuration change, or a minimal experiment. Do not treat correlation in a profile or trace as proof.
  9. Publish the complete evidence. Keep the environment, revisions, workload definitions, raw measurements, profiles, traces, and decision rule available so another engineer can rerun the comparison.

Use Go 1.24’s benchmark-loop form when applicable

For Go 1.24, the Go team introduced testing.B.Loop as a more robust way to express benchmark loops. It is designed to help prevent compiler optimizations from invalidating the work being measured, exclude setup and cleanup from the timed region, and prevent benchmark code from depending on an iteration count.

Use this as a version-labeled example of harness quality, not as a rule for every language or for earlier Go releases. When comparing a runtime rewrite in another ecosystem, use that ecosystem’s supported benchmark harness and verify that setup, teardown, compiler optimization, and iteration control are handled consistently.

Interpret common result patterns

Everything is slower by a similar amount

First suspect a shared comparison change: a different compiler or build flag, CPU allocation, VM class, operating-system image, input generator, or benchmark revision. If the environment is stable, inspect runtime-wide services such as dispatch, allocation, garbage collection, or instrumentation that affect every workload.

Only one focused benchmark regresses

Use its differential profile and inputs to isolate the changed path. Confirm that the test still represents current user work and has not become sensitive to an accidental fixture change. A narrow regression can be real even when the geometric mean is unchanged.

CPU rises and latency rises

Look for additional calls, larger cumulative costs, repeated conversions, allocations, or missed fast paths. Compare absolute profile differences and then verify the suspected operation with a smaller benchmark.

Latency rises while CPU is flat or lower

Move to an execution trace. Examine blocked stacks, queueing, lock or channel contention, scheduler delays, and changes in parallelism. A runtime that does less active work can still take longer if it waits more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Results alternate between faster and slower

Increase repetition and inspect variance, outliers, and environmental noise. Check for frequency scaling, background load, shared-host contention, garbage-collection phase, and workload randomness. Do not average away a bimodal behavior that users may experience as tail latency.

The aggregate improves but a critical workload worsens

Report both facts. Weighting can make a small or numerous set of easy benchmarks dominate the summary. Prioritize the workload according to user volume, latency objectives, or operational risk rather than accepting the aggregate as the verdict.

Keep claims proportional to the evidence

The Go team’s PGO article says Go 1.21 workloads “typically get between 2% and 7% CPU usage improvements” from PGO. That statement describes the team’s PGO results, not runtime rewrites in general. Likewise, the published 3.83% sec/op example is tied to one Markdown service workload, one Intel Xeon W-2135, 40 iterations, and the conditions described in that article. Neither figure supplies a universal pass/fail line for your rewrite.

State the scope of every result: build revisions, workload, machine or VM, date, sample count, metric, and uncertainty. If the evidence is inconclusive, say so and identify the next measurement rather than assigning a cause prematurely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a decision-ready regression report contains

  • A one-line verdict for each workload: faster, slower, or statistically unclear, with the relative and absolute measurements.
  • The named baseline and candidate revisions, runtime and compiler versions, build flags, and benchmark-suite revision.
  • Hardware or VM details, operating-system image, resource limits, and relevant background-load controls.
  • Input data, concurrency, warm-up and cleanup policy, iteration count, and measurement method.
  • An aggregate such as a geometric mean only when its use is explained, plus a separate list of substantial outliers.
  • Links or retained artifacts for raw observations, differential CPU profiles, and execution traces where they support the diagnosis.
  • A causal hypothesis tied to specific profile or trace evidence, and the experiment that confirmed or rejected it.
  • Known limitations, including changed workloads, unmatched environments, high variance, or results that lack statistical clarity.

This record lets reviewers distinguish a runtime-caused regression from benchmark drift and gives maintainers a reproducible path from symptom to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large must a slowdown be before it is a regression?

There is no universal percentage that applies across runtimes and workloads. Repeat the comparison, quantify variability, and combine statistical evidence with a user-impact threshold appropriate to the affected workload.

Why can a CPU profile fail to explain a slower request?

CPU profiles sample active execution. Time spent blocked on synchronization, I/O, timers, or scheduling may not produce additional CPU samples; an execution trace can expose that waiting and its blocked stacks.

Should I rely on the geometric mean of benchmark results?

Use it as a suite-level summary only when the workloads are comparable, and always list materially worse individual benchmarks. An aggregate can improve while an important workload regresses.

What should I do when the old baseline is no longer available?

Recreate an immutable baseline from the last known source and build configuration if possible. If the environment or benchmark changed, label the comparison as limited and avoid claiming that the rewrite alone caused the difference.
