How to Diagnose Dropped Frames on a YouTube OBS Loop Stream

An OBS loop is not a diagnosis. Compare OBS’s network counter with YouTube stream health, then test bitrate, wired networking, and encoder settings systematically.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, identify which indicator is reporting trouble. An increasing OBS Dropped Frames (Network) counter points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS rendering or encoding lag and YouTube’s separate stream-health warnings are different signals, so diagnose them separately rather than assuming the loop itself is at fault.

Identify what is actually dropping

During a controlled test, compare OBS’s Stats window with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages. Record the exact YouTube warning, when it appears, and the OBS log for that session. Also note your output resolution and frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether you are using Ethernet or Wi-Fi. YouTube’s dashboard provides live stream health and status messages; a warning there is not automatically the same thing as OBS’s network-dropped-frames counter.

  • OBS Dropped Frames (Network): OBS says this indicates that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to compensate.
  • OBS rendering or encoding lag: These are separate counters; do not diagnose them as network drops.
  • YouTube stream-health warning: Save the exact wording and investigate it on its own terms, particularly if OBS’s network counter remains clear.
  • Viewer buffering: This can occur even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames; viewers’ location, device, and internet connection can affect playback.

References: OBS stream connection troubleshooting, OBS stream buffering troubleshooting, and YouTube live stream metrics.

Check whether the bitrate fits the connection and video mode

Run an upload-speed test, but treat it as a snapshot: one result does not prove sustained capacity along the route to YouTube. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate, not a guarantee. If your configured video bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain reliably, lower it and repeat the same test.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Then check YouTube’s encoder table for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. That example is not a universal bitrate for other formats or modes. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Consult its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for your configuration.

Test with content and movement similar to the planned broadcast, using the actual OBS scene and loop source. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event; a brief static desktop test may not exercise the same setup.

Change one network variable at a time

  1. Test Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Connect the streaming computer directly by cable and repeat the same stream test. A wired connection helps isolate Wi-Fi instability; it does not rule out other network or ISP problems.
  2. Lower the video bitrate if needed. Keep the other settings and test content unchanged so you can tell whether the change affects OBS’s network counter.
  3. Try another available ingest server. OBS recommends testing a different server. A different streaming service can also be a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed remedy.
  4. Check network software and settings. OBS’s Windows guidance includes testing network optimizations and TCP pacing where available, leaving Bind to IP at its default, and trying IPv4-only as a reversible test. If IPv4-only makes no difference, restore the IPv4/IPv6 default. Dynamic bitrate may reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying cause and can reduce quality.
  5. Isolate VPN or security-software interference carefully. Temporarily test whether the software is affecting the connection, then restore protection. If the test confirms interference, configure an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled. Check bundled network “optimization” software and network drivers as well.
  6. Inspect local equipment. If appropriate, restart the modem or router and check cables, switches, extenders, and the network card for faults. If the problem persists after local checks, ask your ISP to investigate possible routing or congestion outside your home network.

These are troubleshooting tests, not proof that any one component is responsible. Change one factor at a time and record the result. See OBS’s connection guide for its recommendations and qualifications.

Check the YouTube encoder and stream-key path

A stream-key or encoder-start failure is a different problem from a network-dropped-frames counter that rises after streaming has begun. YouTube’s standard workflow is to copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder, wait for the preview, and then go live. If the encoder cannot start the stream, YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions say to obtain a new stream key and update the encoder.

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs, with up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends CBR and the keyframe interval described above, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm that your encoder settings and YouTube stream-key configuration agree; do not change protocol or codec as a guess. See YouTube’s guides to creating a live stream with an encoder and troubleshooting a YouTube live stream.

Use the test result to narrow the cause

  • If Ethernet or a lower bitrate stabilizes OBS’s network counter, that supports a connection-stability or capacity diagnosis.
  • If OBS shows no network drops but viewers report buffering, investigate playback conditions separately; viewer buffering does not by itself establish a broadcaster-side connection fault.
  • If YouTube reports a stream-health problem while OBS’s network counter stays clear, keep the exact YouTube message and follow the warning on its own terms.
  • If the fault persists, preserve the OBS log, the timestamped YouTube message, and the settings and network details you recorded. Those details help distinguish local equipment from an external route or ingest issue when speaking with your ISP or platform support.

OBS’s official guidance describes dropped frames as a connection-to-server or configured-bitrate symptom. The available guidance does not establish a special cause for loop streams, and the fact that content repeats is not enough to identify the fault. Without the session log, exact warning, operating system and OBS version, encoder settings, and network measurements, a particular stream’s cause cannot be determined.
