How to Detect OAuth2 SSRF Attacks in SAP Logs and Network Traffic

Detecting an OAuth2-related server-side request forgery (SSRF) in SAP requires evidence from two places: the SAP process that initiated an outbound request and the network path that carried it. Start by confirming that a server-side fetch was influenced by untrusted input; an OAuth redirect, token exchange, or failed connection alone is not proof of SSRF. Then verify the destination, timing, response, and initiating code path against approved OAuth and integration endpoints.

What counts as OAuth2 SSRF in SAP?

SSRF occurs when a server fetches a remote resource using a destination that an attacker can influence without adequate validation. In an SAP landscape, the vulnerable action might be an HTTP client call made by an ABAP application, an integration component, a Web Dispatcher path, or another runtime behind the SAP system. The presence of OAuth2 changes the workflow in which the request appears, but it does not create a special SAP event or signature.

An OAuth authorization redirect normally sends a user’s browser to an authorization server. A token request or resource request may instead originate from the SAP server. Those are separate network legs. A browser redirect to an approved issuer is not evidence that SAP performed an SSRF, while a server-side request to an attacker-controlled URL during an OAuth-related operation may be.

Use the definitions in OWASP API7:2023 when deciding whether the destination was controlled by untrusted input. RFC 9700 provides OAuth security guidance, including redirect-URI matching and PKCE, but it is not an SSRF detection rule.

First establish the SAP scope

Do not begin with a generic log search. Record the exact system and the route an outbound request would take.

  • SAP product, release, support package, and relevant application or component.
  • Whether the request passes through the Internet Communication Manager (ICM), SAP Web Dispatcher, an application-specific HTTP client, or an external proxy.
  • Configured OAuth issuer, authorization, token, and resource endpoints.
  • Approved integration destinations, service-discovery mechanisms, scheduled jobs, and known redirect behavior.
  • The incident window, timezone, SAP host names, and any load balancer, NAT, or proxy addresses.

The SAP references for ICM and Web Dispatcher logging apply to specific NetWeaver releases. Confirm that your version and topology use the same parameters and views before treating a missing field as evidence that no request occurred.

Check whether outbound SAP logging covered the incident

ICM and Web Dispatcher client logs

SAP documents inbound and outbound HTTP logging as separate configurations. For outbound requests, inspect the client logging parameter icm/HTTP/logging_client_<xx>. In the cited NetWeaver documentation, the logging handler is not activated by default, so determine whether it was enabled before and during the incident, which filters were active, and where rotated files were retained. SAP describes the capability in its ICM and SAP Web Dispatcher logging documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In an ABAP system, review the client log through SMICM → Goto → HTTP Plug-In → Client Logs. Capture the original files and export metadata such as the logging format, active filters, rotation schedule, retention period, and system clock. Inbound logging uses a different parameter family, icm/HTTP/logging_<xx>; an inbound access log cannot substitute for outbound client logging.

The parameter reference for icm/HTTP/logging_<xx> explains release-specific behavior and field limitations. Read it together with the applicable outbound configuration rather than assuming every request URL or body is present: SAP NetWeaver 7.50 logging parameter reference.

Security log and trace context

Inspect icm/security_log for malformed protocol syntax, attempts to access nonexistent objects, denied access, and Web administration logon errors. These entries can explain a suspicious connection or a blocked request, but SAP does not describe this log as a universal SSRF detector. Use the icm/security_log documentation to interpret its events for your release.

Collect only the relevant portions of dev_icm<n> and dev_wdisp traces, preserving timestamps and file metadata. SAP warns that ICF traces and related files can contain security-relevant data. Restrict access, preserve originals, and work from copies. The trace and log handling guidance is at SAP’s trace-files and log-files documentation.

S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition audit records

Cloud audit retrieval is a distinct context. The S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition Security Audit Log guidance describes how to retrieve audit records and their properties; it does not establish a cross-product OAuth2 SSRF event name. Verify which cloud service generated an event, what fields are retained, and whether outbound HTTP activity is represented before relying on the audit log for network evidence.

Build a joined timeline

Use a narrow time range and one consistent timezone. Join records in this order:

  1. Trigger: Identify the inbound API call, OAuth operation, job, or user action that could have supplied a destination or redirect value.
  2. SAP context: Add application logs, request IDs, user or technical-user context, work-process information, and the component that handled the operation, where those fields exist in your product.
  3. ICM evidence: Match the request time, method, destination, response status, and connection details in the outbound client log. Include the relevant dev_icm or dev_wdisp lines.
  4. DNS and proxy evidence: Determine which hostname was queried, what address it resolved to, and whether an enterprise proxy, NAT gateway, or load balancer changed the observed source or destination.
  5. Network confirmation: Correlate firewall, flow, proxy, or packet records to establish whether a connection was attempted, accepted, redirected, blocked, or retried.

Record the initiating SAP host or process whenever network telemetry can attribute it. A proxy log may show the proxy as the source, while a flow record may show a translated address; use both layers to avoid assigning the request to the wrong system.

What to look for in destinations and behavior

Observation Why it matters How to validate it
Host outside the approved OAuth or integration inventory May indicate a manipulated URL, a misconfiguration, or an undocumented dependency. Check application configuration and ask the integration owner whether the endpoint or certificate recently changed.
Private, loopback, link-local, or otherwise restricted address Can be a high-value SSRF lead because attackers often target internal services. Confirm DNS answers at the time, proxy policy, NAT behavior, and whether the SAP host could actually route to the address.
Unexpected protocol or port A destination change is more suspicious when it leaves the normal HTTPS token or resource path. Compare the observed scheme and port with the registered integration and egress policy.
Redirect to a different host Follow-on requests can move an initially approved request to an unapproved destination. Review proxy and client records for every hop and determine whether redirects are allowed by the application.
Repeated failures or blocked egress Can show an attempted connection even when no response or data returned. Match retries, firewall denies, DNS failures, and SAP error times; do not treat failure as proof of successful exploitation.
Unexpected volume or timing A burst may distinguish an incident from a scheduled token refresh or normal integration traffic. Compare with job schedules, baseline traffic, and neighboring systems during the same window.

These are investigative leads, not SAP-published signatures. An unfamiliar host can be a legitimate service change, and a successful response does not prove that the request was attacker-controlled or that sensitive data was returned.

Separate OAuth legs before classifying the event

Authorization redirect

In a conventional authorization-code flow, the user’s browser visits the authorization server. Check the exact redirect URI, state handling, and client identity in application and browser-facing records. A redirect to a legitimate issuer does not demonstrate server-side fetching by SAP.

Token exchange

The SAP server commonly sends a back-channel request to a token endpoint. Confirm that the hostname, scheme, port, certificate, and proxy route match the configured issuer. If an input parameter changed the token URL, or if the client followed an attacker-controlled redirect, investigate the server-side fetch as a possible SSRF path.

Resource or user-info request

After obtaining a token, the application may call a resource server. Identify whether the resource URL is fixed in configuration or assembled from user input. Preserve OAuth records without copying access tokens, client secrets, authorization codes, or cookies into a report.

RFC 9700 recommends exact redirect URI matching, PKCE for public clients, and defenses against open redirects and mix-up attacks. Apply those controls to the OAuth implementation, but investigate URL validation and outbound request behavior separately; none is a replacement for SSRF evidence.

Determine attempt, execution, and impact

Use an evidence ladder rather than a single alert.

  • Possible trigger: An inbound request, OAuth parameter, configuration change, or job could have influenced a destination.
  • Attempted connection: SAP client logging, proxy records, or firewall denies show that the server tried to reach the destination. A blocked request is still useful evidence of attempted egress.
  • Confirmed server-side fetch: Correlated SAP and network records identify the SAP process, destination, and connection result, with no browser-only explanation.
  • Potential impact: The target returned data, a redirect caused additional requests, or credentials, tokens, or internal metadata may have been exposed.

To claim SSRF, confirm both sides of the definition: a server-side request occurred and untrusted input influenced its destination without adequate validation. A successful HTTP status alone does not prove data disclosure. Determine what response bytes were available to the application, whether they were stored or returned to a caller, and whether any secret or metadata was exposed.

Account for logging blind spots

No outbound entry does not prove that no request occurred. Logging may have been disabled, filtered, rotated, deleted, or routed through a runtime not covered by ICM. Retention and clock drift can also break correlation. Document the coverage interval and every unobserved path.

SAP documentation notes that, in the relevant trace context, form fields and URI parameters are not written to the trace file for security reasons. Therefore, a trace may prove that a request happened without showing the exact attacker-supplied value. The configured handler and release determine the precise fields available.

DNS caching, split-horizon DNS, proxies, NAT, and load balancers can make the address in one record differ from the address in another. Preserve raw DNS, proxy, firewall, and flow records and record which layer observed each value. Restrict access because traces and OAuth-related logs can contain sensitive identifiers or security-relevant data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test benign explanations before escalating

  1. Ask the integration owner to confirm endpoint ownership, recent migrations, certificate rotations, proxy changes, and service-discovery updates.
  2. Compare the request with scheduled jobs, token refresh intervals, retries, and normal redirect behavior.
  3. Verify whether a DNS change or load balancer explains the observed IP without changing the logical destination.
  4. Check whether a failed connection came from a health check, deployment task, or configuration test rather than a user-controlled request.
  5. Review application code or configuration to identify the exact variable that built the URL and whether allowlisting, scheme checks, port restrictions, and redirect validation were applied.

If the destination was unauthorized, establish whether it was reachable, what response was returned, whether follow-on requests occurred, and whether credentials or internal service metadata could have crossed the boundary. Preserve evidence before changing configuration or restarting components.

Evidence-source comparison

Evidence source Best visibility Common limitation Handling priority
SAP application logs Triggering user, job, request ID, and business context. May omit low-level destination details or sensitive parameter values. Restrict access and retain original timestamps.
ICM/Web Dispatcher client logs Outbound HTTP activity handled by the configured ICM/Web Dispatcher path. Only covers enabled handlers and retained files; fields vary by release and format. Verify icm/HTTP/logging_client_<xx> and rotation before relying on absence.
ICM security log and traces Protocol errors, denied access, and connection context. Not a dedicated SSRF detector; traces may omit form and URI parameters. Collect the smallest relevant set and protect it.
DNS, proxy, firewall, and flow telemetry Observed destination, resolution, route, policy decision, and network result. Source attribution can be obscured by proxies, NAT, and load balancers. Correlate timestamps and identify the observing network layer.
Cloud security audit records Product-specific administrative and security events where supported. Coverage and event names differ from NetWeaver logging and may not represent outbound HTTP. Check the service documentation and retention policy.

Practical incident record

For each suspicious request, record one row containing the UTC time, SAP system and host, triggering request or job, application identity, observed hostname, resolved IP, protocol and port, proxy or NAT hop, response or block status, redirect chain, relevant log-file names, and confidence level. Mark which values came from SAP, DNS, proxy, firewall, or flow telemetry. Store secrets separately and never paste tokens or client credentials into the timeline.

Classify the finding as benign, suspicious attempted egress, confirmed unauthorized server-side fetch, or confirmed impact only after the evidence ladder is satisfied. This keeps a blocked probe from being overstated while ensuring that a logging gap is not mistaken for a clean result.

Bottom line for SAP defenders

The reliable method is correlation: verify outbound client logging coverage, inspect ICM security and trace context, join SAP records to DNS/proxy/firewall/flow telemetry, and prove that untrusted input controlled the server-side destination. OAuth-specific controls reduce redirect and token-flow risks, but only the combined SAP and network timeline can show whether an OAuth-related SSRF was attempted, executed, or caused impact.
