Blood testing evaluates iron status in the body; water testing measures a defined concentration of iron in a collected sample. A metal detector, magnet, home blood test, and laboratory water analysis answer different questions and cannot be substituted for one another.
Use the branch below that matches your goal. If you are checking your own health, arrange clinical testing and interpretation. If you are checking drinking water, use a laboratory method that states which form of iron it measures, how the sample was preserved, and what reporting limit applies.

Start by identifying the sample and the question
“Detecting iron” can mean finding out whether a person has depleted iron stores, measuring iron dissolved in drinking water, or locating metallic iron in a physical object. The first two are the evidence-supported routes covered here. They require different samples, instruments, units, and interpretation.
| Sample | Question being answered | Appropriate approach |
|---|---|---|
| Blood | Are iron stores low or high, and is an anemia pattern present? | A clinician-selected blood panel, interpreted with the person’s symptoms and medical history |
| Drinking water | How much iron is present, and is it total, dissolved, or ferrous iron? | Laboratory analysis using a defined method and controlled sampling |
| Solid object, food, flour, soil, or another material | Does that material contain iron? | A separate, purpose-specific method; the blood and water procedures below do not establish this |
Do not turn a result from one branch into a conclusion about another. A ferritin result says something about stored iron in the body; it does not measure water quality. A water concentration in milligrams per litre does not diagnose anemia.

How clinicians detect iron status in a person
Which blood measurements may be ordered
Iron status is usually assessed with more than one measurement because each test describes a different part of iron biology. MedlinePlus lists serum iron, transferrin, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and ferritin among the commonly used iron tests. Depending on the clinical question, a provider may order several together to investigate low or high iron, distinguish types of anemia, or monitor treatment.
| Measurement | What it represents | Why it may be included |
|---|---|---|
| Serum iron | Iron measured in the blood at the time of collection | Part of an assessment for abnormal iron status when interpreted with other results |
| Transferrin | A principal blood transport protein for iron | Helps characterize how iron is being transported |
| Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) | The blood’s iron-binding capacity | Provides another context for interpreting iron transport and availability |
| Ferritin | A marker of stored iron | Can identify low iron stores before iron-deficiency anemia develops, but is affected by inflammation |
| Hemoglobin and hematocrit | Measures commonly used to screen for anemia | Useful screening information, but neither describes the full spectrum of iron status on its own |
The exact combination is not a universal panel. A provider chooses tests according to symptoms, age, medical history, suspected cause, and whether the purpose is diagnosis or treatment monitoring.
Why ferritin is useful—and why it can mislead
Ferritin generally reflects the amount of iron stored in the body. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements notes that it can reveal low iron status before iron-deficiency anemia appears. However, inflammation can raise ferritin, so a seemingly reassuring value may not represent adequate stores when infection or another inflammatory condition is present.
Hemoglobin and hematocrit are common screening measures, but NIH cautions that they are not sensitive or specific enough to describe iron status by themselves. A normal screening value therefore does not automatically rule out depleted stores, and an abnormal value does not identify the cause without additional information.
How results are interpreted
A blood result needs clinical context. MedlinePlus states that interpretation considers symptoms, age, medical history, and other blood-test results. The World Health Organization recommends ferritin as a marker of iron stores in apparently healthy people and discusses separate interpretation when infection or inflammation is present. Its guidance emphasizes that population and clinical context matter.

For that reason, do not apply one ferritin cutoff as a universal self-diagnosis. A threshold developed for a particular population or health context may not transfer directly to another person, especially when inflammation is possible. Ask the ordering clinician which pattern the complete set of results shows and whether another condition could be affecting the measurements.
A practical clinical pathway
- Define the concern. Tell the healthcare provider whether the question involves possible deficiency, possible excess, anemia, symptoms, a known condition, or monitoring of treatment.
- Have the appropriate blood tests ordered. The provider may select ferritin, serum iron, transferrin, TIBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, or a combination rather than relying on one number.
- Provide relevant context. Mention your age, symptoms, medical history, and any known infection or inflammatory condition because these affect interpretation.
- Review the pattern, not an isolated result. Compare the tests that were ordered and the laboratory’s reference information with the clinical situation.
- Follow up on an unexpected result. Do not begin, stop, or escalate iron treatment solely from a single result without professional advice.
How to measure iron in drinking water
Choose the iron fraction before choosing the test
Water laboratories may report different analytes. “Total iron” includes the iron measured in the prepared sample, while “dissolved iron” refers to the portion that passes through the method’s filtration step. “Ferrous iron” identifies the Fe(II) form. These are not interchangeable results, so the laboratory request should state which question the test must answer.
| Requested result | Sampling implication | Interpretive use |
|---|---|---|
| Total iron | Use the laboratory’s specified whole-sample handling procedure | Comparison with a total-iron objective or other jurisdictional requirement |
| Dissolved iron | Filter before acidification when following the ASTM D1068A procedure summarized by NEMI | Describes the filtered fraction rather than all particulate and dissolved material together |
| Ferrous iron | Analyze promptly and minimize contact with atmospheric oxygen | Determines the Fe(II) fraction, which can change during handling |
What the ASTM D1068A summary specifies
NEMI’s summary of ASTM D1068A describes atomic absorption spectrophotometry for total, dissolved, and ferrous iron in water. For dissolved iron, the summary calls for filtering before acidification. For ferrous iron, it says the analysis should be performed promptly while minimizing contact with atmospheric oxygen, because handling can alter the form being measured.
The summary states an applicable concentration range of 0.1–5.0 mg/L and identifies a 1996 revision year. Treat that range as the scope stated in the cited method summary, not as a guarantee that every modern laboratory uses the same calibration range or reporting limit. Before sampling, confirm the current status of the standard, the laboratory’s method, and the lowest concentration it can report reliably.
Collect and preserve the sample correctly
- Contact the laboratory first. Ask whether it measures total, dissolved, ferrous, or multiple forms and request its containers and written collection instructions.
- Match the bottle to the analyte. Use only the container and preservative supplied or approved by the laboratory; do not improvise acidification.
- Follow the timing instructions. Ferrous iron requires prompt analysis and reduced oxygen exposure according to the ASTM D1068A summary.
- Apply filtration only when required. For a dissolved-iron result, the cited procedure calls for filtration before acidification. Filtering a total-iron sample would answer a different question.
- Document the sample. Record the collection point, date, time, and whether the sample represents a tap, well, treatment outlet, or another source, as requested by the laboratory or water authority.
- Keep chain-of-custody requirements. If the result is for a regulated decision, follow the responsible drinking-water authority’s shipping, preservation, and documentation rules.
Understand the Canadian reference value
Health Canada’s technical document, published on 2024-12-27, gives a Canadian aesthetic objective of no more than 0.1 mg/L (100 µg/L) total iron in drinking water. This is an aesthetic objective specific to Canada; it should not be presented as a universal global health limit. Iron can affect appearance, taste, staining, or deposits, and the meaning of a result depends on the jurisdiction and the purpose of the test.

Health Canada also reviews standardized analytical methods and says the method reporting limit should be low enough to quantify concentrations below the 0.1 mg/L objective. Ask the laboratory for its reporting limit and detection or quantification information, then follow the instructions of the responsible drinking-water authority for any compliance decision.

Rust-colored water, orange deposits, metallic taste, or staining can indicate iron, but visual inspection cannot establish a concentration or identify whether the iron is total, dissolved, or ferrous. A consumer kit should not be treated as equivalent to a standardized laboratory result unless the named method and its performance have been demonstrated for the intended range and sample type.
If you use a screening kit for an informal check, treat its result as preliminary and verify an important decision with a qualified laboratory. Compare the kit’s stated analyte, units, range, reporting limit, preservation requirements, and quality controls with the question you actually need answered. A kit designed for one form of iron may not measure another.
Choosing the right method: a decision checklist
- Sample: Is the material blood or drinking water?
- Purpose: Are you evaluating body iron stores, investigating anemia, monitoring treatment, or measuring a water concentration?
- Analyte: For water, do you need total, dissolved, or ferrous iron?
- Interpretation: Will a clinician interpret the blood pattern, or will a water authority apply a jurisdiction-specific objective?
- Method: Which analytical procedure will the laboratory use, and is its current status confirmed?
- Reporting limit: Can the laboratory quantify below the concentration relevant to your decision?
- Sampling: Were filtration, acidification, oxygen exposure, timing, and transport handled exactly as required?
- Documentation: Are the collection location, date, units, and analyte definition shown on the report?
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a single blood number as a diagnosis
Problem: Treating ferritin, serum iron, hemoglobin, or hematocrit alone as proof of deficiency or excess.
Correction: Review the complete set of ordered tests with symptoms, age, medical history, and inflammation status. Ferritin can reflect stores but can also rise with inflammation; hemoglobin and hematocrit are screening measures rather than complete iron-status tests.

Applying a universal ferritin threshold
Problem: Using a cutoff from a different population or health context.
Correction: Use the laboratory’s information and the clinician’s interpretation. WHO guidance distinguishes apparently healthy people from those with infection or inflammation.
Ordering “iron in water” without defining the fraction
Problem: Receiving a total-iron result when the real concern was dissolved or ferrous iron.
Correction: Specify the analyte before collection and confirm the filtration, preservation, and timing requirements.

Ignoring reporting limits
Problem: Assuming a result reported as below a limit proves the water contains no iron.

Letting the sample change before analysis
Problem: Allowing oxygen exposure, delayed transport, or incorrect preservation to alter ferrous iron or the dissolved fraction.
Correction: Follow the laboratory’s instructions; for the ASTM D1068A summary, analyze ferrous iron promptly, minimize atmospheric oxygen, and filter dissolved-iron samples before acidification.

For a clinical result, expect the names of the tests ordered and values interpreted against the laboratory’s reference information. The meaningful conclusion comes from the pattern and the person’s context, not from a generic “iron level.”
For water, a useful report identifies the sample, analyte definition, method, units, reporting limit, collection and analysis dates, and any preservation or filtration applied. Those details let you determine whether the result answers your original question and whether it can be compared with a local requirement such as Health Canada’s Canadian aesthetic objective.
The Bottom Line
Detecting iron intelligently starts with the sample and purpose. Use a clinician-interpreted blood panel for body iron status, or a laboratory water analysis that defines total, dissolved, or ferrous iron and follows the required sampling procedure. No single reading, home kit, or visual clue replaces that context.
