Use browser checks to confirm whether images loaded, then use screenshot monitoring to catch visible regressions and preserve evidence. A screenshot difference alone cannot prove an image is broken: text changes, layout shifts, and rendering variation can also trigger it.
What screenshot monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
A screenshot comparison checks a current capture against a stored reference. It can reveal a blank image area, fallback icon, unexpected crop, or layout shift, but it does not identify the cause of the visual change. Pair the screenshot with a browser-level check of the image elements for a more specific signal. Build a Playwright check for failed images
The example below checks images after the page has reached the state you want to monitor. It reports the image source and page URL for images that have completed loading but have no intrinsic width, as well as images that have not completed. Lazy-loaded images may remain incomplete until they enter the viewport, so trigger the relevant content before checking.

The image check covers <img> elements; CSS background images and other non-image content need their own checks. Validate the condition against your site’s lazy-loading and dynamic-source behavior. MDN notes that complete can also be true in cases such as a missing source, which is why the example also checks naturalWidth.

When a page change is intentional, review the image-check output and screenshot, then update the baseline deliberately with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots.
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing with its baseline, reducing noise from unsettled rendering. Consult the PageAssertions API documentation for assertion options.
Choose what to monitor and make captures repeatable
- Cover meaningful states: Select important routes, templates, viewports, and interactive states. Include images below the fold and in sections revealed by interaction, not just the initial viewport.
- Trigger lazy content: Scroll or interact as a visitor would, then allow the intended state to settle before inspecting image properties or taking the screenshot.
- Keep the environment stable: Baselines can vary with operating system, browser, hardware, settings, and rendering environment. Use consistent comparison conditions.
- Control dynamic regions: Ads, timestamps, rotating content, and other volatile areas can make screenshots less repeatable. Playwright supports masking and screenshot styles; tune pixel-difference thresholds against ordinary variation without making them permissive enough to hide a missing image.
- Preserve diagnostic evidence: On failure, retain the route, image source, browser state, screenshot, and test output. The image-element result helps identify a loading failure; the screenshot shows its visible context.

AWS CloudWatch Synthetics documents a visual monitoring blueprint that compares canary screenshots with a baseline and fails the canary when differences exceed the configured threshold. AWS says this blueprint is supported on syn-puppeteer-node-3.2 and later, and is not supported on Python and Selenium canaries or Playwright runtimes. Its separate broken-link checker detects URL errors such as 404s and invalid hostnames; that is not proof that an image rendered. See AWS canary blueprints for current details.

Troubleshoot failed checks and noisy comparisons
- An image is reported incomplete: It may still be lazy-loaded or assigned dynamically. Trigger the relevant viewport or interaction and wait for the intended state before checking.
- An image has zero natural width: Check the reported
currentSrcorsrc, the page’s network/load behavior, and whether the source was set correctly. Keep the route and screenshot with the failure for diagnosis. - The screenshot fails but image checks pass: A visual mismatch can come from text, layout, rendering, or another page change. Inspect the diff rather than labeling it an image-loading failure.
- Screenshots differ between runs: Stabilize browser and host settings, wait for the page state to settle, and mask or style volatile areas. Review thresholds so expected rendering variation is tolerated without obscuring the missing-image symptom.
- The first run creates an unexpected baseline: Treat it as a reference candidate, not as proof of the correct page. Review the capture and update snapshots only after confirming the rendered change is intended.
- A CloudWatch broken-link check passes while an image is missing: A valid URL can still fail to render as an image. Use browser image properties for image-load validation; AWS describes its broken-link checker as URL/link error detection.
