How you detect a Dirac string depends on the spin-ice platform. In artificial spin ice, microscopy can resolve individual nanomagnets, so you can calculate vertex charges and reconstruct the chain of flipped islands joining a monopole–antimonopole pair. In bulk pyrochlore spin ice, neutron scattering normally reveals the string population through reciprocal-space correlations rather than producing a camera image of one string. Simulations add a third route: calculate defects on every saved frame, build paths through the sequence of spin changes, and track their identities with charge- and geometry-aware matching.

A reliable analysis therefore separates three tasks: detecting ice-rule defects, reconstructing the connecting path, and testing the resulting trajectories against ensemble observables such as string length, avalanche size, magnetization, correlations and magnetic noise.

What a Dirac string is—and what an experiment must identify

In spin ice, a Dirac string is the chain of reversed spins associated with separating two opposite emergent magnetic charges. A monopole-like defect is created when a local vertex violates the ice rule. Flipping successive spins moves the defect through the lattice and leaves a trail; the opposite charge remains at the other end until the pair annihilates or reaches a boundary.

The operational definition matters. A single equilibrium snapshot does not always contain a uniquely identifiable historical string. The 2025 Physical Review Research analysis of model spin ice states that strings are defined in the space-time of monopole trajectories rather than in individual microstates of the Gibbs ensemble. In practice, a path reconstructed from a static image is a constrained inference, while a time-resolved sequence can reveal the actual sequence of hops.

Every detection pipeline should report three separate outputs:

  • Defects: the locations and signs of ice-rule violations (or the corresponding low-charge rule for the chosen geometry).
  • Paths: the lattice edges or islands connecting opposite charges, with any ambiguity retained rather than hidden.
  • Ensemble behavior: distributions and time-dependent signals that test whether the reconstructed objects agree with a spin-ice model.

Choose the workflow for your platform

Platform and method What is measured directly What a “string” result means Main limitation
Artificial kagome or square arrays imaged by X-ray photoemission electron microscopy, magnetic force microscopy or related techniques Orientation of individual nanomagnets in real space A reconstructed sequence of reversed islands between measured opposite-charge vertices; time series can provide trajectories Resolution, field of view, frame rate, disorder and image-classification errors determine whether individual flips are resolved
Bulk pyrochlore spin ice such as Dy2Ti2O7 or Ho2Ti2O7, measured by diffuse neutron scattering Ensemble-averaged spin correlations in reciprocal space Field- and temperature-dependent structure factors whose intensity is reproduced by dipolar-spin-ice or dumbbell calculations containing monopoles and strings No image of one real-space string; interpretation is model-dependent and averages over many configurations
Magnetometry, susceptibility or magnetic-noise spectroscopy Bulk or local response as a function of field, temperature and frequency Dynamical signatures consistent with defect motion and constrained strings Indirect: monopole and string contributions must be separated with a model
Monte Carlo or other trajectory simulations Complete spin configurations and update history Paths built from allowed spin changes and tracked through creation, motion, branching and annihilation Results depend on lattice, Hamiltonian, boundary conditions, disorder, temperature and update rule

Detecting strings in artificial spin ice

Artificial kagome spin ice provides the clearest real-space route because each elongated island behaves approximately as an Ising macrospin. Mengotti and co-authors reported direct real-space observations of emergent monopoles and their associated Dirac strings at room temperature using synchrotron X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. Their study also found that monopole densities and one-dimensional Dirac-string avalanches were quantitatively explained by Monte Carlo simulations.

1. Acquire and calibrate the images

Collect images at a known field, temperature and preparation history. For a sweep experiment, preserve the exact field value and sweep direction for every frame. Correct drift and distortion before classifying islands; a small positional error can change whether a moment is assigned to one vertex or its neighbor. Record the pixel-to-lattice transformation so that distances and graph connections are measured in lattice units, not camera pixels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Segment each island and classify its moment

Segment the elongated islands, then assign each one a binary direction along its long axis. The classifier should expose a confidence score and an “unknown” state for blurred, overlapping or partially occluded islands. Do not force a low-confidence island into a direction: one mistaken spin can create two false charge defects and an apparently plausible but incorrect string.

3. Convert vertices into effective charges

For each vertex, determine which island moments point into the vertex and which point out. In kagome ice, compare the result with the geometry-appropriate low-charge manifold and assign a signed effective charge to violations. Use the same sign convention throughout the data set, and store the vertex coordinates and charge values in a table linked to the source image.

Charge assignment should include boundary handling. A vertex at an array edge has fewer neighbors than an interior vertex and must not be scored with an interior two-in/two-out rule. Either exclude incomplete boundary vertices from bulk statistics or define their permitted states explicitly.

4. Reconstruct the path between opposite charges

Represent the array as a graph. Islands or lattice edges become graph elements, and vertices provide the endpoints. For each positive–negative pair, search for paths composed of reversed islands that connect the measured charges and obey lattice connectivity. If several paths satisfy the endpoint and connectivity constraints, retain all candidates with their costs or report the event as ambiguous.

A useful path cost can combine the number of reversed islands, geometric continuity, consistency with the observed spin state, and any known field direction. The shortest graph path is not automatically the physical path: a monopole can move around a loop, and a static configuration can erase information about the order in which flips occurred.

5. Track events through a field sweep or time series

For consecutive frames, detect charge centroids and match them with a global assignment rather than matching each defect greedily. Include charge sign, maximum physically allowed displacement, lattice-neighbor geometry and the possibility of pair creation or annihilation in the assignment cost. A nearest-neighbor match can incorrectly swap two same-sign defects during a dense avalanche.

When the imaging interval is longer than one island flip, link a detection to a short sequence of allowed hops only if the intermediate states are compatible with the measured frames. Mark gaps and uncertain links explicitly. A trajectory that requires an impossible jump should be rejected or flagged, not silently interpolated.

6. Quantify strings and avalanches

Report measurements with their definitions, because “string length” can mean different quantities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Number of reversed islands in a reconstructed path.
  • Monopole separation measured in lattice spacings.
  • Total path length, including detours or loops.
  • Number of spin flips in one connected avalanche.
  • Maximum simultaneous string length during an event.

Also calculate monopole density, pair-separation distributions, branching frequency, avalanche-size distributions, hysteresis and magnetization. A one-dimensional avalanche should be identified from the connected sequence of allowed flips, not merely from a visually narrow region in an image.

Using neutron scattering in bulk pyrochlore spin ice

For bulk compounds such as Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7, diffuse neutron scattering is the standard way to examine collective correlations. Fennell and co-authors reported Dirac-string evidence in Dy2Ti2O7 through diffuse neutron scattering in 2009. The measurement does not display one string as a photograph. It measures a Fourier-space, ensemble-averaged structure factor.

Measure reciprocal-space correlations

Collect diffuse scattering over the reciprocal-space region relevant to the pyrochlore lattice, with controlled temperature and field conditions. Subtract background and normalize the intensity using the instrument’s established procedure. Compare cuts and maps, not only a single peak, because the string-related signal is distributed through the correlation pattern.

Compare with a physical model

Calculate the expected structure factor using a dipolar-spin-ice or dumbbell representation with the same lattice, field orientation and temperature range. Include the magnetic form factor and instrumental resolution when those are part of the established analysis. A string interpretation is credible when the field and temperature evolution of the measured diffuse intensity agrees with a model containing the relevant monopole and string excitations, while alternative spin configurations do not explain the data as well.

Neutron data establish collective correlations and their evolution; they do not identify the birth order or exact lattice route of an individual monopole pair. Avoid describing a reciprocal-space map as a direct image. If a real-space path is required, combine scattering with a model reconstruction or another probe rather than over-interpreting one measurement.

Use complementary bulk observables

Magnetization, susceptibility and magnetic-noise spectroscopy can test the same model from different angles. Field-dependent magnetization probes reversal, susceptibility probes response and relaxation, and noise spectra probe fluctuations over frequency. The 2025 model-spin-ice study cautions that long-time correlated noise can be dominated by constraining strings rather than by monopole fields alone. Therefore a noise peak should not be labeled a monopole signature without calculating both contributions in the chosen model.

Building a Dirac-string tracker in simulation

A simulation has access to information experiments often lack, but it can still produce misleading strings if the representation and update history are not recorded. Save the metadata needed to reproduce the trajectory: lattice geometry, boundary conditions, temperature schedule, applied-field protocol, disorder realization, Hamiltonian parameters, update rule and the interval between saved frames.

1. Select the spin representation

Use Ising spins on the actual island lattice for artificial spin ice. For pyrochlore studies, use a dipolar-spin model or a dumbbell representation consistent with the question being tested. The representation determines how local charge, energy and allowed hops are defined, so do not transfer a charge formula from kagome to pyrochlore without deriving the appropriate geometry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Calculate charge on every saved frame

At each frame, compute the vertex charge or the divergence of the coarse-grained magnetization. Label positive and negative defects and identify the neutral ice-rule manifold. Keep the full charge field, including zero-charge vertices, because a later spin flip can move a defect through a region that appears neutral in one frame.

3. Build paths from spin changes

Take the set of spins that changed between successive configurations and construct a transition graph. Connect changed edges so that each path begins and ends at detected charges and follows lattice connectivity. If the simulation performs multi-spin updates, preserve the internal update order when available; otherwise report that the frame-to-frame path is underdetermined.

For a complete trajectory, concatenate transitions into a space-time graph whose nodes are charge detections and whose edges are allowed monopole hops. This representation distinguishes a genuine path from a merely connected set of flipped spins in one configuration.

4. Match monopoles through time

Use a global assignment cost that includes displacement, charge sign and allowed hop geometry. Add penalties for crossing trajectories or for violating the maximum hop rate implied by the update rule. Support explicit event types:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Creation: a pair of opposite charges appears with a compatible first hop.
  • Propagation: one charge moves to a neighboring vertex while the string grows.
  • Annihilation: opposite charges meet and the defect pair disappears.
  • Boundary escape: a charge leaves the simulated region.
  • Branching or merger: multiple paths meet; retain the graph topology instead of forcing one-to-one identity.

When two assignments have similar costs, store both as alternatives or mark the segment ambiguous. Silent interpolation creates artificially smooth trajectories and biases velocity, lifetime and string-length statistics.

5. Validate against independent observables

A tracker is not validated by producing attractive paths. Compare simulations with measured quantities that were not used to tune the tracker:

  • Magnetization curves and hysteresis under the same field protocol.
  • Monopole density and pair-separation distributions.
  • String-length and total-path-length distributions.
  • Avalanche-size, duration and branching statistics.
  • Static structure factors for scattering comparisons.
  • Synthetic magnetic-noise spectra, including correlations imposed by strings.

Run sensitivity checks by changing frame spacing, image-classification confidence thresholds or the trajectory cost function. A result that changes substantially under reasonable analysis choices should be reported with that uncertainty.

No single method proves every aspect of a Dirac string. Real-space imaging supplies local paths, scattering supplies collective correlations, response measurements supply dynamical ensemble information, and simulations provide a controlled space-time record. Agreement across these levels is stronger evidence than any one signature in isolation.

Common failure modes and fixes

Calling a charge pair a string

Two opposite defects in one frame do not prove which islands were flipped first. Reconstruct a path only from allowed lattice connections, and label it history-inferred when no time-resolved sequence exists.

Using a shortest path without physical constraints

Shortest-path algorithms can cut across forbidden vertices or ignore detours. Constrain every edge by lattice connectivity and the observed spin state; include field direction and update rules when known.

Matching defects independently

Greedy nearest-neighbor matching swaps identities during dense events. Use global assignment with charge sign, hop limits and creation or annihilation states.

Ignoring boundaries and disorder

Edge vertices, missing islands and fabrication disorder alter allowed states and path costs. Mask incomplete vertices, encode the actual lattice graph and report the treatment of defective islands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Over-interpreting neutron maps or noise spectra

Reciprocal-space intensity and low-frequency noise are not direct photographs of strings. Fit field and temperature dependence with a model and test whether constrained strings, monopole fields or both are required.

Reporting precision the data cannot support

Do not quote sub-frame velocities, exact path order or automated accuracy benchmarks unless the sampling and validation establish them. The literature does not provide one universally accepted cross-platform accuracy benchmark or a turnkey tracker that works for every spin-ice geometry; analyses must document their own uncertainty and validation.

A reproducible reporting checklist

  • Name the material or artificial-ice geometry, lattice size and boundary treatment.
  • State temperature, field orientation and sweep or preparation protocol.
  • Describe image segmentation, spin classification and confidence filtering.
  • Define the vertex-charge convention and permitted ice-rule states.
  • Specify whether paths come from static reconstruction or time-resolved trajectories.
  • Give the graph, assignment cost, hop limits and ambiguity policy.
  • Report monopole, string and avalanche metrics with units and sample sizes.
  • For scattering, identify reciprocal-space coverage, background treatment and model used for comparison.
  • For noise, state frequency range and how monopole and string contributions were separated.
  • Release enough configuration and trajectory information for an independent reanalysis.

Bottom line for an experiment or simulation

Start by measuring or calculating the local ice-rule defects. Then treat the string as a constrained path in space and time, not as a decorative line drawn between two charges. In artificial arrays, island-resolved microscopy supports direct graph reconstruction; in bulk pyrochlores, diffuse neutron scattering tests the collective correlation pattern associated with strings; in simulations, saved spin transitions and charge-aware assignment expose the trajectories explicitly. Validate every path analysis against magnetization, defect, avalanche, correlation and noise observables, and preserve ambiguous cases instead of turning them into false certainty.
