How to Detect and Stop an AI Agent That Is Spawning Unauthorized Processes

Treat an AI agent that creates an unapproved process as a security incident, not as a harmless automation glitch. First capture process-creation telemetry and correlate the parent-child tree with the agent’s prompts, tool calls and runtime logs. Then pause the session, revoke execution permissions and credentials, isolate the workspace or host, preserve volatile evidence, and terminate descendants. For prevention, enforce an operating-system sandbox with default-deny filesystem, network and binary policies; model instructions alone cannot reliably contain a child process.

What an unauthorized process looks like

An AI coding or automation agent normally launches only the interpreters, compilers, package managers and helper programs explicitly allowed for its task. An unauthorized process is any executable that falls outside that approved baseline, appears without an approved tool request, runs under an unexpected identity, reaches an unapproved network destination, or changes the system in a way the operator did not authorize.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The parent-child relationship is the starting point. A legitimate chain might be an agent runtime starting a build tool, which starts a compiler. A suspicious chain could be an agent starting a shell, the shell starting a downloader, and the downloader launching a privilege-changing utility. The executable name alone is not enough: attackers can rename a binary, use an interpreter to execute a script, or hide activity behind a trusted parent.

MITRE ATT&CK identifies process creation as a detection data component. Its guidance states: “Monitoring process creation is crucial for detecting malicious behaviors, such as execution of unauthorized binaries, scripting abuse, or privilege escalation attempts.” That makes process telemetry the primary evidence, while the agent’s own event stream supplies the intent and authorization context.

Build a trustworthy process-creation record

Collect the following fields for every process created while an agent session is active. Capture them at start and stop, and retain the relationships so an investigator can reconstruct the full ancestry rather than seeing isolated events.

Field What to record Why it matters
Parent and ancestry Parent PID, immediate parent, complete ancestor chain and child PIDs Shows whether a process came from the agent, a permitted tool or an unexpected intermediary.
Executable identity Full path, file hash where available, signer or package identity Distinguishes an approved binary from a look-alike in a writable directory.
Command line Every argument, including script names, URLs, encoded content and redirection Reveals download, persistence, credential access and destructive options that a process name hides.
Environment and working directory Environment variables, current working directory and inherited descriptors Shows leaked tokens, altered search paths and access to directories outside the project.
Identity User, service account, group membership and effective privileges Exposes an unexpected identity or a transition to elevated privileges.
Timing and result Start time, stop time, exit status, stdout and stderr Lets you join activity to a specific agent action and see whether it succeeded.
File activity Files created, modified, deleted or made executable Connects a process to persistence, tampering or data staging.
Network activity Destination addresses, ports, DNS names and connection times Identifies egress to destinations outside the approved allowlist.

Store the process record with the agent session identifier, tool-call identifier and runtime instance. A process event without a corresponding approved tool call is a high-priority anomaly, but a matching tool call is not automatic proof of safety: the tool may have been manipulated by untrusted content or may have executed more than the user approved.

Establish a baseline before you alert

Detection is only useful when the expected behavior is documented. For each agent, project type and execution identity, record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Approved executables and interpreters, including their absolute paths or controlled installation locations.
  • Normal parent-child relationships and expected process counts.
  • Permitted working directories and writable locations.
  • Authorized users, service identities and privilege levels.
  • Approved network destinations, ports and protocols.
  • Tool calls that may create processes, and the approval required for each one.

Start with an audit period in which events are collected without blocking. This reveals legitimate package installation, test runners and build helpers that would otherwise create false positives. After the baseline is reviewed, alert on deviations such as a new shell, a scripting interpreter used outside its normal task, a downloader, a privilege-changing utility, a persistence command, a binary launched from a temporary or project-writable directory, or a sudden increase in child processes.

Correlate the process tree with the agent’s decisions

Process telemetry answers what ran; agent telemetry answers why the runtime believed it was allowed. Join both streams on a stable session or tool-call ID and a narrow timestamp window. Preserve the original prompt, the agent’s plan, the tool request, the tool response and any policy decision. Include retries and parallel tool calls, because a child can outlive the request that created it.

Use a correlation timeline

  1. Mark the user prompt and the agent session start.
  2. Record the agent’s plan or intermediate reasoning summary that is exposed by the framework, without altering the original record.
  3. Place each tool request and response on the timeline with its approval result.
  4. Place process start and stop events beneath the tool call that should have caused them.
  5. Flag processes that start before an approval, after a tool response has ended, or with no matching call.
  6. Compare file writes and network connections with the process that performed them.

This timeline separates an approved build command from an unapproved side effect. It also identifies policy gaps: if a single permitted tool can invoke an unrestricted shell, the control is too coarse even when every event has a matching request.

Look for prompt injection and hostile content

Agents can be induced to request harmful actions by instructions embedded in a repository, issue, web page, document or tool response. Microsoft describes these as content that can cause an agent to request harmful actions. The presence of such text does not by itself prove compromise, but it explains why an apparently legitimate tool call may violate the user’s intent.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During triage, preserve the exact content shown to the agent and identify its origin. Check whether the agent:

  • Treated a file or web page as a higher-priority instruction than the operator’s request.
  • Copied commands, scripts or URLs from untrusted content into a tool request.
  • Requested secrets, disabled safeguards or changed its own permissions.
  • Attempted to access directories, hosts or credentials unrelated to the task.
  • Repeated a denied action with altered wording or a different executable.

Do not “clean up” the triggering file before preserving it. It may be the only evidence of the injection path.

Immediate containment: the first minutes matter

Containment should stop further actions while preserving enough state to determine what happened. Use this order unless a life-safety or destructive event requires an emergency shutdown.

  1. Pause the agent. Stop the session or revoke its execution lease so queued and retrying tool calls cannot start new work.
  2. Remove execution authority. Disable shell, code-execution and external-network tools. If the framework supports per-tool revocation, revoke only the affected capabilities first; otherwise suspend the entire agent identity.
  3. Revoke exposed credentials. Rotate API tokens, cloud credentials, repository tokens, SSH keys and other secrets visible in the agent environment. Do not assume a token is safe because no suspicious network connection was observed.
  4. Isolate the runtime. Restrict the host, container or workspace from sensitive networks while retaining a controlled forensic path. Block egress rather than immediately destroying the instance when evidence is needed.
  5. Capture volatile state. Save the process tree, command lines, environment metadata, open connections, recent file changes and agent event log before killing descendants where feasible.
  6. Terminate unauthorized descendants. After capture, stop the offending process and its children. Verify that no orphaned process, detached job or separate runtime remains.
  7. Check for persistence. Review scheduled tasks, startup files, service definitions, modified binaries, shell profiles and other mechanisms that could relaunch the process.

Record who performed each action, the exact time, the scope and the verification result. A containment step that is not verified can leave a child process running under another identity or on another host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve evidence before deleting anything

Process termination can erase command lines, memory-resident scripts and network context. Preserve the agent’s runtime logs and the host or container snapshot before rebuilding. At minimum, retain:

  • Hashes or read-only copies of suspicious scripts, binaries and triggering documents.

Use a single incident record so investigators can move from a process to the tool call that launched it and then to the content that influenced the agent. Preserve clock information and timezone so events from the host, cloud control plane and agent runtime can be aligned.

Choose controls by what they can actually stop

Detection and prevention solve different problems. Post-execution alerting can explain an incident but cannot undo a credential theft. Pre-execution policy can block an action, but a policy that lacks visibility into child processes may miss an escape. Compare controls across these dimensions:

Control question What to verify
Prevention or detection? Does the control deny the action, report it after execution, or provide both modes?
When is the decision made? Before a tool request, before process creation, at network egress, or only after an event?
How strong is isolation? Is the agent separated at the OS, container, virtual-machine or host level?
What is restricted? Filesystem paths, network destinations, interpreters, binary invocation, credentials and identities.
Do restrictions follow children? Verify that a script or helper process inherits the same filesystem and network limits.
What is logged? Parentage, arguments, environment, user, files, connections, tool IDs and retention period.
How does it integrate? Native agent events, supported network paths, API middleware or host-level telemetry.
What is the response workflow? Can an operator pause a session, revoke a lease, rotate credentials and isolate the runtime from one console?
Where can it run? Check operating-system, cloud, agent-version and preview-status limitations before deployment.

Use an OS-enforced sandbox, not instructions alone

System prompts and policy text can guide an agent, but they do not constrain a process that has already received operating-system permissions. The Apache RFC-AI-0004 guidance is explicit: “The agent‘s executing process MUST run inside an OS-level sandbox at all times.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical sandbox design uses default-deny rules and narrowly scoped exceptions:

  • Filesystem: allow the project directory and designated caches; deny home directories, credential stores, system configuration and unrelated mounts.
  • Network: deny egress by default; allow only required package registries, source hosts or service endpoints, with explicit ports and name resolution rules.
  • Binary invocation: allow a reviewed set of executables and interpreters; prevent execution from writable temporary or repository paths unless required.
  • Identity: run with a dedicated, least-privileged user or service account and remove unnecessary group membership.
  • Working directory: pin the runtime to a restricted workspace and prevent tools from changing into broader paths.
  • Child inheritance: verify that every descendant receives the same filesystem, network and identity restrictions.

VS Code’s agent sandboxing documentation illustrates the inheritance principle: filesystem and network restrictions apply to child processes, so a script cannot escape merely by spawning another process. Test this property with the interpreters and build tools your projects actually use; a wrapper that launches an external daemon may create a new security boundary.

Add policy checks at the tool boundary

Place a policy decision immediately before a tool request is executed. OWASP’s Agent Control Standard describes middleware hooks and declarative policies that make agent actions inspectable and controllable at runtime. A policy should receive the session identity, requested tool, command or arguments, working directory, target resources and risk classification.

Classify actions by impact

  • Low impact: read-only inspection inside the approved workspace.
  • Moderate impact: package installation, compilation or file writes that remain inside the workspace.
  • High impact: shell execution, network access, credential use, privilege changes, persistence, deletion or writes outside the workspace.

Require explicit human approval for high-impact actions and make the approval specific to the command, destination and time window. Do not turn a one-time approval into a permanent allowlist. Log the policy input, decision, approver and resulting process tree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run new policies in audit mode first. Microsoft recommends starting in audit mode to observe detections and validate accuracy before switching to block mode for active enforcement. Tune false positives during this period, then block clearly unauthorized operations. Keep an emergency revoke control that does not depend on the agent responding correctly.

Platform examples and their boundaries

Documented platform controls illustrate different points in the defense chain. Their supported agents, preview labels and configuration details can change, so verify current status before relying on a feature.

Platform control Primary function Useful coverage Boundary to verify
Google Cloud Agent Platform Threat Detection Runtime detection and Security Command Center findings Collects process, script and library information; documentation lists malicious binaries or scripts, container escapes, reverse shells, attack tools, suspicious token generation and excessive permission denials among detectable threats. Confirm which agent runtimes and deployment modes are supported and how quickly findings arrive.
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint AI agent runtime protection Inspection with audit or block outcomes Inspects agent-native events or supported network paths. Documentation lists Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI and the GitHub Copilot app as supported integrations at its last update. Check whether the specific agent version and action type are supported; unsupported actions may still execute.
VS Code agent sandboxing OS-level execution restrictions Filesystem and network limits are inherited by child processes, reducing escape through a spawned script. Review the configured paths, network exceptions and any helper that launches outside the sandbox.

These examples are complementary rather than interchangeable: a host sandbox can prevent an action, a runtime detector can expose a suspicious process, and an agent-aware policy can explain why the request was made.

Design a repeatable operating procedure

Before an agent runs

  • Assign a unique identity and short-lived credentials.
  • Place the project in a restricted or trust-limited mode when its files or dependencies are untrusted.
  • Apply the sandbox and test child-process inheritance with a harmless command.
  • Load the approved executable, directory and network baseline.
  • Enable process, file, network and agent-event logging with a defined retention period.
  • Set approval requirements for shell, external network, credential access and destructive operations.

While it runs

  • Stream process creation and tool events into a common timeline.
  • Alert on ancestry, identity, path, argument, network and volume deviations.
  • Require a matching approved tool call for every process-creation event.
  • Watch for prompt-injection content and for repeated attempts after a denial.

After a suspected violation

  1. Pause the session and revoke execution permissions.
  2. Rotate credentials and isolate the runtime.
  3. Preserve volatile evidence and the triggering content.
  4. Terminate and verify all unauthorized descendants.
  5. Inspect persistence, files and outbound connections.
  6. Determine whether the root cause was malicious content, an overbroad tool, a sandbox gap, a stolen credential or a policy error.
  7. Update the baseline and policy, then replay the task in a disposable environment before restoring access.

Common failure modes and fixes

Only watching the top-level agent process

A shell, interpreter or detached helper can perform the actual work. Collect the complete ancestry and continue monitoring after the parent exits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allowing a shell because the command looked safe

Shell metacharacters, environment expansion and downloaded scripts can change behavior. Inspect the fully resolved command line and restrict binary invocation at the operating-system boundary.

Relying on an allowlist of names

A renamed or replaced executable can use an approved name. Combine path controls with hashes or signatures, writable-directory restrictions and parent-child expectations.

Blocking after the evidence is gone

Immediate killing may erase memory-resident scripts and network context. Capture process metadata and relevant files first when the threat is not actively destructive.

Assuming a matching tool call proves authorization

Prompt injection can cause an agent to request a harmful action through a legitimate tool. Compare the request with the user’s intent, policy decision and untrusted content that influenced it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying a policy only to the agent process

If restrictions do not inherit, a child can regain filesystem or network access. Verify inheritance for every interpreter, build runner and helper used by the workflow.

What good containment looks like

You should be able to answer, from one incident record, which agent session was active, which prompt or content influenced it, which tool request was approved, which process started first, what every descendant executed, which identity and credentials were available, what files and destinations were touched, and how containment was verified. If any of those answers requires guesswork, improve telemetry or narrow permissions before returning the agent to production.
