How to Detect and Remove XMRig Malware Disguised as Microsoft Edge

If Microsoft Defender reports Trojan:Win64/DisguisedXMRigMiner, treat the alert as a malware incident rather than assuming that Microsoft Edge itself is infected. On a personal Windows PC, update Defender protection intelligence, run a full scan, and verify the detection and remediation status in Protection history. Microsoft says Defender detects and removes this named threat. If the device is a server or managed endpoint, isolate it when appropriate and begin an incident investigation, because the detection has been associated with exploitation of vulnerable Apache Log4j applications.

What the “disguised as Microsoft Edge” detection actually means

XMRig is software for mining the Monero cryptocurrency. The software itself is not automatically malware: Microsoft distinguishes legitimate mining tools, unauthorized miners, potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), and trojanized miners. A sample becomes a security problem when it is installed or run without informed consent, hides its activity, persists on a system, or arrives as part of a broader compromise.

Microsoft has a specific Defender detection named Trojan:Win64/DisguisedXMRigMiner. The threat entry was published on November 3, 2021 and updated on December 23, 2021. Its documented association is with earlier exploitation of CVE-2021-44228, the Log4Shell vulnerability in Apache Log4j 2. That association applies to the named 2021 threat entry; it does not prove that every XMRig infection, or every suspicious process that resembles Edge, came through Log4Shell.

Microsoft’s current XMRig entry, Trojan:Win64/XMRig!AMTB, was published and updated on April 28, 2026. It lists possible symptoms and recommends current antimalware definitions and a full scan. Neither entry, in the material available here, publishes a universal sample-specific Edge executable path, file hash, signature, or process tree. A process called msedge.exe, high CPU use, or an unfamiliar file name is therefore a clue to investigate—not proof that Edge is malicious.

The most reliable evidence is the security product’s alert: the exact detection name, affected file or resource, activity state, and remediation result. Do not kill a process or delete a file solely because its name contains “Edge” or “XMRig.” A legitimate Edge process can be busy, and a malicious file can use a convincing name.

How do I know if XMRig is disguised as Microsoft Edge?

Start with the Defender alert, not the process label

Open Windows Security and review Virus & threat protection and Protection history. Look for the complete detection name, the file or resource involved, whether the item was active, and whether Defender says the action completed, was quarantined, or needs attention. The detection record carries more weight than a process name shown in Task Manager.

If your organization uses a managed endpoint product, review the corresponding alert in that console as well. It may show the parent process, command line, account, network connections, and other devices with related alerts. Those details are particularly important when the detection appears on a server or business workstation.

High CPU is a symptom, not an identification test

Unauthorized miners may consume substantial processor resources, but CPU usage alone cannot identify the responsible program or establish malicious intent. Microsoft lists slow performance, added or modified files, desktop-setting changes, freezing, and crashes as possible symptoms for its current XMRig detection. The same symptoms can result from browser tabs, updates, failing hardware, drivers, or unrelated software.

Check which process is consuming resources, where its executable is located, who started it, and whether a security alert links it to a file. Avoid making a decision from the image name alone. A process that looks like Edge but runs from an unusual user-writable folder, has no valid publisher information, or appears alongside a Defender detection deserves investigation; the available Microsoft entries do not define one universal path or signature that proves the disguise in every case.

Distinguish a web-page mining script from an installed miner

Microsoft has also described coin-mining scripts that run inside web pages. Closing a suspicious tab can stop that page’s browser activity, but it does not demonstrate that an installed miner has been removed. Conversely, a busy Edge tab can be harmless or unwanted without representing a Windows malware infection. Run a security scan and inspect the alert before treating browser activity as an installed XMRig compromise.

Why is Microsoft Edge using so much CPU?

Legitimate browser workloads

Edge can use CPU while rendering video, running web applications, compiling scripts, processing many tabs, or recovering from an extension problem. A single busy tab does not establish mining. First identify whether one tab, an extension, or the browser process as a whole is responsible, then close the offending page or disable a recently added extension if the behavior stops and no malware alert exists.

When the behavior warrants a malware scan

Run a scan when high CPU is accompanied by Defender’s XMRig alert, unexplained persistence after Edge closes, new files, changed settings, freezing, crashes, or unusual network activity. These combinations increase the need for investigation, but they still do not prove that the legitimate Edge binary is compromised. Confirm the exact resource and remediation status in the security product.

Do not “fix” the symptom by deleting Edge files

Manually deleting a browser executable can damage the browser and leave the actual payload or persistence mechanism in place. Follow Defender’s quarantine or removal action. If remediation fails, preserve the alert details and escalate to an administrator or qualified incident responder rather than repeatedly terminating processes.

How do I remove XMRig malware from Windows?

1. Update protection intelligence

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Open the protection-update area and choose Check for updates (the exact label can vary by Windows release or management policy).
  4. Wait for the antimalware intelligence update to complete before scanning.

Microsoft specifically advises updating antimalware definitions and running a full scan when cloud-delivered protection is unavailable. Keep cloud-delivered protection enabled where your organization’s policy permits; disabling it reduces Defender’s ability to use current cloud intelligence.

2. Run a full scan

  1. Return to Virus & threat protection.
  2. Choose Scan options.
  3. Select Full scan and start the scan.
  4. Allow it to finish, even if the computer becomes slow during the scan.

A full scan is the documented broad response in the cited Microsoft guidance. Do not assume that a quick scan or closing Edge has checked every location relevant to the alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Accept the security product’s remediation

After the scan, open Protection history and read the result. If Defender offers Quarantine, Remove, or another remediation action for the detected item, use that action and restart if Windows requests it. Microsoft states: “Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects and removes this threat.” That statement concerns the named detection and Defender’s normal response; it is not a guarantee that every variant, persistence mechanism, or secondary compromise will be resolved by one scan.

Record the detection name, affected path or resource, timestamp, and remediation result. If the item returns after reboot, the action fails, or another account or process recreates it, stop treating the event as a simple one-file cleanup and escalate the investigation.

4. Check for remnants when the alert says remediation is incomplete

Microsoft warns that malware detections can leave remnant files or system changes. A follow-up scan, reboot, and review of Protection history are appropriate when the record says remediation is incomplete or when symptoms continue. Do not improvise by deleting registry entries, scheduled tasks, services, or browser files without evidence and a recovery plan; the supplied Microsoft guidance does not provide one universal manual-cleanup sequence for every XMRig variant.

What to do on a server or managed business device

A detection on a server or managed endpoint can indicate a wider compromise. Microsoft recommends immediate investigation for the Log4j-associated threat context. The response should be coordinated with the organization’s security or IT team rather than handled as an isolated desktop cleanup.

Contain the affected device

Isolate the device from the network when appropriate under your incident-response plan. The goal is to prevent continued command-and-control traffic, lateral movement, or unauthorized mining while preserving evidence. Do not power off or wipe a system if your responders need volatile evidence and have instructed you to keep it running.

Review processes, accounts, and persistence

  • Identify suspicious processes and their parent processes.
  • Review activity by elevated or recently created accounts.
  • Check for related endpoint alerts, unusual outbound connections, and persistence mechanisms.
  • Investigate whether credentials may have been exposed; reset them when warranted by the incident assessment.
  • Block relevant indicators in the tools your organization operates, where available.

The exact commands and data sources depend on the endpoint-management and logging systems in use. Preserve the Defender record and related telemetry so responders can correlate the event across machines.

Patch the vulnerable application, not just the miner

If the investigation finds an Apache Log4j application involved in the incident, identify the exact product, component, and installed version, then apply the current security update supplied for that product. Microsoft’s historical Log4j guidance discussed updating Log4j to version 2.17.0 or using a stated mitigation in the 2021 context. That version should not be treated as a timeless prescription for every deployment; current vendor security updates and the application’s supported release are the right standard now.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patch other exposed applications discovered during the investigation as well. Removing XMRig without closing the initial entry point can allow reinfection.

Personal PC scan versus enterprise incident response

Situation Primary objective Core actions
Personal Windows PC Confirm and remediate the detected item Update protection intelligence, run a full scan, review Protection history, and follow quarantine or removal instructions
Server or managed endpoint Contain possible compromise and determine scope Isolate when appropriate, investigate processes and elevated accounts, review related alerts, assess credentials, block indicators, and patch the exploited application

The second row is not merely a longer version of the first. It addresses account compromise, lateral movement, persistence, and an underlying vulnerable service—risks that a single desktop scan cannot establish or rule out.

How to prevent a repeat detection

Keep Defender and browser protections active

Microsoft documents Edge SmartScreen and the Block potentially unwanted apps setting as controls that can help block unwanted downloads and associated URLs. Defender PUA protection can detect and block potentially unwanted software. Availability and exact labels can vary by Windows edition, platform, and organizational management.

PUA protection is supplemental. Microsoft distinguishes PUA coin miners from trojanized miners classified as malware, so enabling PUA blocking does not replace malware detection, current definitions, or a full investigation when Defender reports a trojan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patch exposed software promptly

Keep Windows, browsers, server software, Java components, and business applications on supported releases. If your environment uses Log4j, inventory applications that bundle it and follow the current security advisories for each product. A historical minimum version from the 2021 Log4Shell response should not be copied into a modern patch policy without checking the software vendor’s current guidance.

Reduce opportunities for unwanted software

  • Install software only from sources your organization trusts.
  • Review browser extensions and remove those you do not recognize or need.
  • Use standard accounts for routine work and reserve elevation for tasks that require it.
  • Keep cloud-delivered protection and security intelligence updates enabled where policy allows.
  • Monitor servers and workstations for unexplained resource consumption and new persistence.

Historical scale: useful context, not a current prevalence claim

Microsoft’s 2018 research illustrates that coin-mining malware was broadly encountered, but its figures do not measure current XMRig infections or the specific Edge disguise. The reported figures were:

Measure Reported figure Period and qualification
Computers encountering coin-mining malware 644,000 unique computers per month on average September 2017 through January 2018; historical Microsoft measurement
Enterprise machines encountering coin miners More than 1,800 January 2018 among Windows enterprise customers with PUA protection enabled
Coin miners among blocked PUAs Around 2% September 2017
Coin miners among blocked PUAs Around 6% January 2018

Use these numbers to understand why unauthorized mining drew security attention at the time, not to estimate today’s prevalence. No statistic specific to XMRig disguised as Microsoft Edge is established by the cited material.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

“Edge is using CPU, so Edge must be the miner.”

Why it fails: browser workloads and extensions can consume CPU, and CPU usage does not identify a malicious process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safer approach: correlate the process with the Defender detection, file or resource, publisher information, and persistence behavior.

“I closed the tab, so the infection is gone.”

Why it fails: closing a page stops that page’s script but does not remove an installed miner.

Safer approach: run the full Defender workflow and verify Protection history.

“I deleted the file that looked like msedge.exe.”

Why it fails: the file may be legitimate, and manual deletion can leave persistence or damage the browser.

Safer approach: use the security product’s quarantine or removal action and preserve the alert details.

“The old Log4j version number is all I need.”

Why it fails: the 2.17.0 detail belongs to Microsoft’s historical 2021 guidance and does not replace current vendor advisories.

Safer approach: identify the installed component and apply the current supported security update for that application.

“A single clean scan proves the business environment is safe.”

Why it fails: a scan of one endpoint cannot rule out stolen credentials, lateral movement, or a vulnerable server that remains exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safer approach: isolate and investigate the environment when the alert appears on a server or managed endpoint.

When to escalate immediately

  • The detection is on a server, domain controller, production system, or other high-value endpoint.
  • Defender cannot quarantine or remove the item, or the alert returns after reboot.
  • There are unexplained administrator logins, new accounts, suspicious child processes, or unusual outbound connections.
  • Multiple devices report related detections.
  • The affected system runs an Apache Log4j application or another internet-facing service that may be vulnerable.
  • You cannot determine whether a file is legitimate and removing it could interrupt business operations.

In these cases, contact the responsible IT or security team and follow its evidence-preservation and containment procedures. A qualified incident responder can determine whether the event is limited to a miner or part of a broader intrusion.

Bottom line for a suspected Edge-disguised XMRig alert

Use the detection record—not a process name or CPU meter—as your starting point. On a personal Windows PC, update Defender, run a full scan, accept its quarantine or removal action, and verify the result in Protection history. If remediation fails or the alert returns, escalate instead of manually deleting browser files. On a server or managed endpoint, contain the device when appropriate, investigate accounts and persistence, and patch the vulnerable application that may have enabled access. Microsoft has a named DisguisedXMRigMiner detection and says Defender detects and removes it, but the available guidance does not define a universal Edge-specific path or signature, so confirmation must come from the security alert and a properly scoped investigation.
