Disconnect its management interface from the internet, preserve evidence, rotate credentials from a trusted machine, and plan a clean operating-system rebuild. Ahsay’s own incident guidance says a full rebuild is the strongest way to return the backup server to a known-clean state; applying a hotfix alone does not remove web shells or other persistence already installed by an attacker.
Why this incident requires more than a hotfix
Ahsay reported unauthorized-access incidents beginning 9 October 2026. The company identified CVE-2026-105133, an authentication-bypass vulnerability, and CVE-2026-105134, a Replication Receiver command-injection vulnerability that can permit arbitrary command execution. Check Point’s advisories, published 15 October 2026, describe the same two attack paths.

Ahsay released v10.3.4.45 for the v10 branch on 10 October and v9.15.2.70 for the v9 branch on 12 October. Ahsay says earlier patches did not fully address both vulnerabilities. Operators still running v7 or v8 should move to v9.15.0.0 and then apply v9.15.2.70. These version numbers close the documented entry points; they do not prove that a previously exposed host is clean.

Bitdefender, Technical Advisory, 15 October 2026
An attacker who reached the server before it was patched may have created a JSP web shell, an operating-system account, a service, a scheduled task, a miner, or another remote-access mechanism. A clean-looking webapps directory therefore cannot be your only recovery test.
Recognize the compromise indicators
Ahsay identifies the following signs. One indicator is enough to start incident handling; several together should be treated as a confirmed compromise until qualified investigators establish otherwise.
Unexpected folders at a drive root
Inspect the root of every Windows and Linux drive used by the AhsayCBS installation and its data. Ahsay lists these unexpected names as examples:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsahsay_tsahsay_t8ahsay_t9ahsay_t20ahsay_t21srvuseropt
The names are indicators, not a complete signature. Record the full path, creation and modification times, owner, permissions, and cryptographic hash before moving or deleting anything.
Random JSP files and short alphanumeric directories
On Windows, review %CBS%webapps. On Linux, inspect the equivalent AhsayCBS web-application directory used by your installation. Multiple randomly named .jsp files are suspicious, especially when they appeared during the incident window. Ahsay also cites lower-case alphanumeric directories such as xtj7iu, kje74x, and 103y9r.

Do not open a suspected JSP through a browser or execute it to “see what it does.” A web shell is designed to accept attacker commands, and testing it can alter timestamps, create additional files, or disclose credentials.
Unauthorized replication receivers
List every RPS (Replication Protection System) receiver configured in AhsayCBS. Confirm each receiver’s owner, creation time, destination, certificate, and business purpose with the administrator who requested it. An unfamiliar receiver can provide an attacker with a legitimate-looking channel for continued access or data movement.
Unexpected privileged accounts
Review AhsayCBS accounts for users that no authorized administrator created, particularly accounts with the Admin privilege. Compare account creation times with change tickets and authentication logs. Also review operating-system, database, backup-storage, API, and cloud or virtualization accounts that could have been reached from the server.
Preserve evidence before removing artifacts
Deletion is not the first step. Preserve enough information to determine how the intruder entered, what they changed, and whether access remains elsewhere.
- Record timestamps. Capture creation, modification, and access times for suspicious folders, JSP files, services, tasks, accounts, receivers, certificates, and configuration changes.
- Hash files. Calculate cryptographic hashes for suspicious files and binaries before quarantine or deletion. Store the hash list outside the affected host.
- Capture process relationships. Export the Ahsay service’s child-process tree and note command lines, parent processes, user identities, and start times.
- Record network activity. Save current and recent listening sockets, outbound connections, destination addresses, ports, DNS resolutions, and firewall events.
- Collect logs. Preserve AhsayCBS logs, web-server logs, authentication records, operating-system event logs, database logs, scheduled-task history, service-installation events, and relevant proxy or firewall logs.
- Protect the copies. Store evidence on a separate, access-controlled system and document who collected it, when, and how.
This evidence-preservation sequence is incident-response practice intended to establish whether persistence remains. It is separate from Ahsay’s list of indicators and does not replace a formal forensic investigation where legal, regulatory, or contractual obligations apply.

Contain the server without destroying the evidence
- Restrict the management interface. Remove direct internet exposure using your firewall, VPN, or access-control layer. Permit administration only from a trusted management network.
- Segment the host. Place the server in an isolated network segment and limit connections to the minimum required for evidence collection and business continuity. Do not simply power it off if volatile evidence is important and you have a qualified responder who can collect it safely.
- Preserve a forensic copy where practical. Take a storage snapshot or forensic image according to your organization’s incident procedure. Keep the original protected and perform analysis on a copy.
- Stop risky exposure. If a web shell is actively being used, block the affected listener or route while preserving logs. Avoid logging into the compromised host with reusable administrator credentials.
- Notify the right owners. Involve the backup-service owner, infrastructure team, security lead, legal or compliance contacts, and any customer-facing incident coordinator required by your contracts.
Do not assume that removing one JSP file, disabling one account, or applying the hotfix contains the intrusion. Attackers may have installed persistence outside the Ahsay web application.
Recommended Free Tools
Investigate for persistence beyond the web directory
Child processes of Ahsay services
Review every process launched by the Ahsay service, web container, or replication component. Unexpected command interpreters, scripting engines, archive utilities, download tools, or binaries running under the Ahsay service identity deserve priority. Compare command lines and execution times with normal backup and replication jobs.
Services, scheduled tasks, and startup entries
On Windows, inspect newly installed services, scheduled tasks, Run and RunOnce startup entries, WMI event subscriptions, unusual local users, and changes to service executable paths. On Linux, inspect systemd units, init scripts, cron and anacron jobs, shell profiles, SSH keys, sudoers changes, unfamiliar users, and modified startup scripts. Validate each item against a trusted baseline rather than relying on its filename.
Unusual binaries and miners
Hunt for executables created near the suspicious JSP or folder timestamps, especially binaries in temporary, web, user-profile, or otherwise unusual directories. Huntress reporting associated this campaign with an XMRig miner disguised as edge.exe. That is campaign reporting, not a complete indicator-of-compromise list: an absence of edge.exe does not clear the server, and its presence requires investigation of its hash, parent process, network activity, and persistence mechanism.
Outbound connections
Identify destinations the host contacted during and after the suspected compromise. Look for new external addresses, long-lived connections, unusual ports, encrypted sessions from processes that normally do not communicate externally, and traffic that continues after Ahsay services are stopped. Correlate firewall, DNS, proxy, and endpoint telemetry with process start times.

Accounts, certificates, and configuration
Review AhsayCBS users, operating-system accounts, database logins, API keys, backup-storage credentials, certificates, receiver definitions, integrations, and backup jobs. Compare each change with an approved record. An attacker who cannot retain a JSP shell may still have a valid credential, certificate, receiver, or scheduled job.
Rotate credentials from a trusted host
Assume credentials used on the compromised server may have been exposed. Perform rotation from a separate, trusted workstation or jump host, not from the affected operating system.
- Change AhsayCBS administrator and service-account passwords.
- Reset operating-system administrator, local-service, domain, and SSH credentials that were used on or from the host.
- Rotate database usernames, passwords, connection secrets, and encryption keys accessible to AhsayCBS.
- Replace backup-storage, object-storage, replication, API, certificate, and integration credentials.
- Invalidate active web sessions, API tokens, refresh tokens, and remembered sessions.
- Review privileged-group membership and remove accounts that cannot be verified.
The available vendor procedure does not publish a complete credential-rotation checklist, so adapt the sequence to your identity provider, database platform, storage system, and contractual notification requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose removal: in-place cleanup or a full rebuild
Deleting identified web shells and patching in place can reduce immediate exposure, but it cannot provide the same confidence as rebuilding an operating system and restoring a trusted configuration. Use this decision framework:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Consideration | In-place cleanup | Full rebuild |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence-preservation effort | Requires careful imaging, containment, and validation while the original host remains available for analysis. | Requires preserving evidence first, then replacing the host and keeping the original image offline. |
| Confidence that persistence is gone | Limited by the possibility of undiscovered web shells, services, tasks, accounts, or modified binaries. | Highest available confidence when the operating system and application are installed from trusted media and only verified data is restored. |
| Downtime | Usually shorter, but the host may need repeated investigation and remediation. | Longer because the operating system, AhsayCBS, configuration, receivers, credentials, and jobs must be rebuilt and validated. |
| Validation of pre-compromise configuration | Harder to distinguish legitimate historical changes from attacker changes. | Possible by restoring an Auto Save configuration version dated before the suspicious activity and checking it against trusted records. |
| Risk of reintroducing attacker-controlled files | High if existing application directories, services, scripts, or exports are retained. | Lower when unknown executables, JSP files, service definitions, and configuration exports from the compromised host are excluded. |
Ahsay’s prescribed option is a full rebuild. Its 13 October 2026 Vulnerability Status Update says: “To ensure that your AhsayCBS backup server is completely free from any issues resulting from these security vulnerabilities, Ahsay strongly recommends performing a full rebuild of the backup server.”
Best Value
Perform the AhsayCBS rebuild
Use the following sequence, adapting storage drivers, licensing, networking, and operating-system procedures to your environment.
- Preserve and isolate the old host. Complete evidence collection, record the old host’s identity and network dependencies, and keep its disk image or snapshot offline. Do not use the compromised installation as the source for executables or service definitions.
- Reinstall Windows or Linux. Install a supported operating system from trusted media, apply current operating-system security updates, enable host firewalling, and rebuild administrative access using new credentials.
- Install the correct AhsayCBS baseline. For a v9 deployment, install AhsayCBS v9.15.0.0 and then apply v9.15.2.70. For a v10 deployment, install v10.3.4.0 and then apply v10.3.4.45. Operators on v7 or v8 should move to v9.15.0.0 and apply v9.15.2.70 rather than restoring the obsolete branch.
- Restore a pre-compromise Auto Save configuration. Choose a server-configuration version whose timestamp predates the suspicious folders or files. Ahsay recommends selecting a version at least one day before the timestamp of the suspicious activity.
- Recreate or verify dependent objects. Recreate or validate receivers, users, certificates, integrations, and backup jobs from trusted records. Check destinations, permissions, encryption settings, schedules, and notification endpoints manually.
- Restore only approved data. Do not restore unknown executables, JSP files, service definitions, scheduled-task exports, scripts, or configuration exports from the compromised host. Scan data backups before making them available to the rebuilt server.
- Reconnect gradually. Start with restricted management access, test a small number of backup and restore jobs, and expand connectivity only after logs and network telemetry look normal.
- Monitor continuously. Alert on new administrator accounts, receiver creation, JSP files, service installation, scheduled-task changes, unexpected child processes, and outbound connections. Compare the rebuilt host with a documented baseline.
Validate the rebuilt server before returning it to production
- Confirm that the installed AhsayCBS version and hotfix match the intended branch.
- Verify that no unexpected root-level folders, random JSP files, or short alphanumeric web directories were carried forward.
- Compare every AhsayCBS account, receiver, certificate, integration, and job with an approved inventory.
- Check operating-system services, scheduled tasks, startup entries, binaries, users, groups, SSH keys, and firewall rules.
- Review process trees and outbound network connections during test backups and restores.
- Confirm that old sessions and tokens are invalid and that rotated credentials are the only ones in use.
- Retain logs from the old and rebuilt hosts according to your incident-retention policy.
If the server was compromised before patching, Ahsay recommends involving qualified cybersecurity professionals for a thorough investigation and remediation. That recommendation is especially important when the host contains regulated data, when privileged accounts were created, or when the attacker’s duration and access scope cannot be established.
Common mistakes that prolong an AhsayCBS compromise
“The hotfix installed, so the incident is over.”
The hotfix addresses the vulnerable entry points. It does not remove a JSP web shell, miner, remote-access service, stolen credential, or altered startup mechanism. Patch first for containment, then investigate and rebuild when compromise is suspected.
Deleting suspicious files before recording them
Immediate deletion destroys timestamps, hashes, content, and relationship evidence. Preserve a forensic copy and document the files before quarantine or removal.
Restoring the entire old application directory
That can reintroduce the very JSP files, binaries, services, or configuration changes the rebuild is intended to eliminate. Restore only verified configuration and data.
Reusing old passwords and sessions
An attacker may continue to authenticate with a password, API token, certificate, or active session that was valid before the rebuild. Rotate secrets and invalidate sessions from a trusted host.
Checking only AhsayCBS
Persistence may live in the operating system, database, storage account, identity provider, firewall, or a connected management tool. Review the whole trust path, not just the web application.
