Disconnect the suspected Windows PC, scan it with updated Microsoft Defender and Defender Offline, then secure your accounts from a different, clean device. A Discord-based remote-access trojan (RAT) can let an attacker control the computer, capture keystrokes or browsing activity, and steal passwords or files. A clean scan lowers the risk but does not prove that every persistence mechanism is gone.
What a Discord-based RAT is
A remote-access trojan is malware that disguises itself as a legitimate file, installer, game modification, document, or utility. Once running, it can provide an attacker with remote control, surveillance, and data-theft capabilities. Microsoft describes one consequence of trojans as being able to “Give a malicious hacker control over the infected device.”

Discord is usually the delivery and social-engineering channel, not a unique malware family. A direct message, server post, shortened link, “free” download, cracked software package, or apparently helpful attachment can deliver many different RATs. There is therefore no single filename, folder, or search term that proves or disproves an infection. Malwarebytes notes that RATs may use randomized filenames and paths, which makes manual identification unreliable.
Opening a link alone does not prove that the PC is infected. Risk rises substantially if you downloaded and opened an executable, ran a script or installer, disabled security controls, entered credentials into a page, or granted an unknown program elevated access. Treat unexplained remote-control behavior, new startup entries, disabled security tools, unusual network activity, or account abuse as warning signs.

Do these things before scanning
Containment comes before cleanup. A running RAT may be receiving commands or sending data while you investigate.
- Disconnect the computer. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet. This interrupts ordinary command-and-control and limits further data transfer. Do not reconnect merely to test whether the symptoms have stopped.
- Stop using sensitive accounts on that PC. Do not sign in to banking, email, password managers, cryptocurrency services, Discord, or work systems from the suspected machine.
- Use another device for account recovery. A phone or separate computer that you trust is preferable. If every device may be affected, use a freshly reset device or obtain help from your administrator.
- Do not delete random files yet. A RAT can copy a legitimate filename or hide in a normal-looking directory. Deleting evidence can also make a business investigation harder.
- Escalate managed computers. On an employer, school, or client machine, contact the administrator or incident-response team before uninstalling software, wiping logs, or reinstalling Windows. Follow the organization’s evidence-preservation policy.
Run Microsoft Defender scans in the right order
Use current security intelligence before scanning. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Protection updates, and choose Check for updates. Then scan while the computer remains disconnected from the network unless Windows specifically needs a temporary connection to obtain updates.
1. Run a full scan
- Open Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan, then select Scan now.
- Allow the scan to finish. Large drives can take considerable time.
- For every detection, choose the recommended action, normally Quarantine or Remove. Record the detection name before closing the result.
Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance recommends a current Defender full scan. If Defender reports a threat, restart when requested and scan again after Windows loads. A second scan checks whether the same detection returns, but it is not a mathematical guarantee of eradication.

2. Run Microsoft Defender Offline
Use Defender Offline when suspicious behavior persists, a full scan is inconclusive, or malware may be interfering with security software. Offline scanning restarts the computer and checks it before the normal Windows environment loads, reducing the opportunity for some malware to defend itself.
- Save open work and connect the computer to AC power if it is a laptop.
- Open Windows Security and go to Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, then choose Scan now.
- Accept the restart. Do not interrupt the scan.
- After Windows starts, open Protection history and review the result.
If the offline scan cannot start, note the error, run Windows Update, and retry. Persistent failure, repeated detections, or symptoms that return after reboot justify professional assistance or a clean reinstall rather than endless repeated scans.

3. Consider Microsoft Safety Scanner
Microsoft Safety Scanner is an additional on-demand check. Use the current version from Microsoft, run a scan, and follow its removal prompts. It is a supplement to the built-in antivirus, not a replacement for ongoing protection.
Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) has a narrower role. Microsoft says that it removes only specific prevalent malicious software, is intended as a post-infection removal tool, and does not replace an antivirus product. A clean MSRT result therefore cannot rule out a Discord-delivered RAT.
Use a second-opinion scanner when appropriate
Different scanners can identify different indicators. A reputable second-opinion product such as Malwarebytes can be useful when Defender finds nothing but behavior remains suspicious, or when a known RAT family is reported by a trusted source.
- Install the scanner from its official publisher while using a clean connection. Avoid download links supplied in the suspicious Discord message.
- Open the application and choose Get started if that screen appears.
- Select Scan to start a Threat Scan.
- When the results appear, choose Quarantine for unwanted detections.
- Reboot if the program requests it, then review the report after Windows starts.
Do not install several full antivirus products at once; competing real-time engines can cause conflicts. Treat a second-opinion result as evidence to investigate, not as proof that one product has found every component.
Check persistence without deleting legitimate Windows files
RATs commonly try to start again after a reboot. Manual inspection is useful only when you can distinguish normal Windows and vendor components from an intrusion.

Review recently installed software
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and sort by install date. Remove software you do not recognize, especially an item installed immediately before the Discord download. Microsoft recommends uninstalling unrecognized unwanted software. Before removing an unfamiliar business, driver, accessibility, or security component, verify it with the device owner or administrator.

Open Settings > Apps > Startup or the Startup apps page in Task Manager. Disable an entry only when you can identify its publisher and purpose. A suspicious name is not sufficient evidence: trojans can imitate legitimate application filenames.
Review scheduled tasks and browser extensions
Use Task Scheduler to look for newly created tasks that launch an unfamiliar executable, a script from a temporary folder, or a file in a user profile. In each browser, open the extensions or add-ons manager and remove extensions you did not install. Save the task name, path, publisher, and creation date before changing anything so an administrator can investigate.
Check security exclusions
In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings, review Exclusions. An unknown exclusion for a user-writable folder is a warning sign. Do not add new exclusions to make a scan finish faster, and do not remove a legitimate corporate exclusion without approval.
Never delete a file solely because its name resembles a Windows file. Confirm the full path, digital signature, publisher, and detection information first. If scans disagree, a process returns after reboot, or the computer handles sensitive data, stop manual cleanup and obtain incident-response help.

Assume exposed credentials are compromised
Malwarebytes advises treating personal information accessed on an infected system as exposed. Make account changes from a clean device, not from the suspected Windows installation.
- Reset Discord first. Change the password to a unique one and enable multi-factor authentication. Discord’s recovery guidance identifies password reset and MFA as the first security steps.
- Remove unknown Discord integrations. In Discord, open User Settings > Authorized Apps and deauthorize every application you do not recognize. Recheck the list after the password change.
- Change reused passwords. Prioritize the email account tied to Discord, password-manager account, gaming services, social networks, work accounts, and financial services. Use unique passwords rather than variations of the old one.
- Review active sessions and account activity. Look for unfamiliar logins, password-reset messages, new payment methods, sent messages, new friends, server joins, or direct messages that the attacker may have sent.
- Notify financial providers when warranted. If payment details or financial credentials were present on the PC, contact the provider through its official channel and monitor transactions.
Changing a password does not clean the computer. Keep the suspected PC offline until scanning and, if necessary, reinstallation are complete.
Report the Discord delivery channel
Reporting helps Discord remove malicious files and compromised accounts and can protect other users. In the Discord client, select the message, choose Report Message, and select the applicable abuse type. Preserve the message link, sender, server, timestamps, and file name if it is safe to do so, but do not download the file again.
Discord’s rules prohibit creating or distributing malware to steal information, grant unauthorized access to an account, network, or system, or block access to a computer. They also prohibit using Discord’s content-delivery network to host malicious files or phishing resources. Report the account or message even if your own scans are clean when the delivery clearly appears malicious.

Consumer scanners are useful, but no scan can promise that an adaptable RAT has left every persistence location. Consider a clean Windows reinstall with trusted installation media when:
- detections return after reboot or after removal;
- Defender or other security tools are repeatedly disabled;
- an unknown account has administrator privileges;
- you observe unexplained remote control, keystrokes, webcam or microphone activity, or continuing data transfer;
- scanners disagree on a high-risk detection; or
- the machine stores sensitive business, identity, medical, or financial information.
Back up only necessary personal documents, photos, and other data files. Do not restore unknown executables, scripts, cracked software, browser profiles, or installers. Before wiping, ask an administrator or incident-response professional whether logs or disk images must be preserved. After reinstalling, apply Windows updates, enable Defender, restore files selectively, reinstall software from official sources, and change credentials again if the old installation may have captured them.

For a typical home incident, use updated Defender Full scan, follow with Defender Offline when concern remains, and add one reputable second opinion if results or symptoms do not agree. For a managed device, follow the organization’s security process instead of layering tools without approval.
Common symptoms and what they mean
“I clicked a Discord link but did not run a file.”
A click alone does not establish infection. Close the page, delete any download you did not request, update Windows and your browser, and scan if a file was downloaded or the browser displayed a security warning. If you entered a password, change it from a clean device regardless of whether malware ran.

“Defender found nothing, but my account sent messages.”
Secure Discord and the associated email account from a clean device, remove unknown Authorized Apps, review sessions, and change reused passwords. Account abuse can result from stolen credentials or an OAuth authorization even when the PC is no longer infected.
“The RAT name is not visible in Task Manager.”
That is not reassuring. Malware can use a randomized name, mimic a legitimate process, run only on demand, or hide through another startup mechanism. Rely on updated scans and professional analysis rather than a process-name search.
“The same detection returns after every reboot.”
Disconnect the PC, run Defender Offline, and use a second opinion. If it returns again, preserve the detection details and arrange professional response or a clean reinstall. Do not repeatedly restore the quarantined item.
After cleanup: harden the PC and Discord
- Keep Windows, browsers, Discord, and security intelligence current.
- Leave Microsoft Defender real-time protection enabled unless an administrator has a documented reason not to.
- Use MFA on Discord, email, password managers, and financial accounts.
- Download software only from the publisher’s legitimate site or a trusted store; avoid cracked programs, unsolicited “fixes,” and files sent by unknown Discord accounts.
- Use a standard Windows account for daily work and approve administrator prompts only when you understand what is being installed.
- Maintain offline or otherwise protected backups so a compromise does not become permanent data loss.
- Periodically review Discord Authorized Apps, active sessions, browser extensions, startup entries, and payment activity.
The safest sequence is consistent: isolate first, scan with current tools, verify after reboot, secure accounts from a clean device, report the delivery message, and escalate to a reinstall or professional response when evidence persists.
