How to Detect and Fix Unauthorized Access in a GPU Cluster

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Assume a GPU-cluster intrusion is an identity, control-plane, node, workload, and cloud-account incident—not merely a suspicious GPU process. Preserve logs and other evidence first, build a time-bounded identity timeline, correlate Kubernetes or Slurm activity with GPU allocation, then revoke credentials, isolate affected resources, remove persistence, and rebuild any host whose integrity you cannot prove.

GPU utilization alone cannot establish unauthorized access. A hardware monitor may report faults or abnormal load while every job is legitimate; an access investigation needs authentication, authorization, audit, host, workload, scheduler, registry, CI/CD, and cloud evidence.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What unauthorized access looks like in a GPU cluster

Unauthorized access can occur at several layers at once. An attacker may steal an identity-provider session, obtain a service-account token, abuse a permissive RoleBinding, reach a kubelet through a node proxy, submit a job through a scheduler, alter an image in a registry, or compromise a GPU node and use it as a foothold. A cloud-account breach can provide a second path around cluster controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investigate these layers as one timeline:

  • Identity: users, groups, certificates, tokens, cloud roles, bastion logins, and CI/CD principals.
  • Control plane: Kubernetes API requests, RBAC changes, admission-policy edits, scheduler submissions, and etcd access.
  • Nodes: kubelet, operating-system, SSH, kernel, container-runtime, GPU-driver, and process evidence.
  • Workloads: pod specifications, images, mounts, service accounts, network connections, DaemonSets, CronJobs, and startup tasks.
  • GPU and scheduling: device-plugin allocations, queue or account records, job ownership, and telemetry.
  • Cloud and supply chain: IAM events, registry pulls and pushes, build logs, image signatures, and configuration repositories.

The investigation should answer four questions: which identity acted, what it changed or accessed, which data or compute it could reach, and whether the host or control plane can still be trusted.

Preserve evidence before changing the environment

Containment is urgent, but deleting a pod, rotating a token, or rebooting a node can destroy the evidence needed to identify the entry point. Create an incident timeline and export evidence to protected external storage before making destructive changes wherever safety permits.

Export the evidence set

  • Kubernetes API audit records, including the configured audit-policy version and log-integrity information.
  • Identity-provider, OIDC, LDAP, certificate-authority, static-token, and service-account records.
  • Cloud IAM and control-plane audit trails, including security-group, instance, storage, and key-management events.
  • Bastion, SSH, sudo, shell-history, and remote-management logs.
  • Kubelet, operating-system, kernel, container-runtime, GPU-driver, and GPU Operator logs from every potentially affected node.
  • Scheduler, queue, accounting, job-submission, and allocation records.
  • Container-registry pull, push, tag, deletion, and authentication logs; CI/CD pipeline runs and secret-access records.
  • Relevant manifests, admission policies, RBAC objects, node labels and taints, and configuration-repository commits.

Copy files with timestamps and cryptographic hashes, record who collected each item, and store the originals where an attacker cannot rewrite them. External append-only logging is recommended for audit data. High-detail API logging can capture Secret contents, so requests involving Secrets should use reduced detail and access to the log store must be tightly controlled.

Define the investigation window

Start with the first alert, unexplained job, new identity, or suspicious network connection. Work backward far enough to include credential issuance and image publication, and forward until the last known malicious activity. Record the time zone and clock source for every system; normalize timestamps before correlating events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build an identity and API timeline

Kubernetes has no built-in user database. Every configured authentication source must be checked, including external identity providers, client certificates, static tokens, service-account tokens, cloud IAM, bastion access, and automation credentials.

Review Kubernetes audit events

The Kubernetes audit logger records actions taken by the API for later analysis during a compromise. For each unexpected event, capture:

  • Username, groups, authentication mechanism, and impersonation fields.
  • Source address, user agent, request URI, verb, response code, and request/response timestamps.
  • Namespace, resource, subresource, name, and object reference.
  • Whether the request was made directly, by a controller, or through an automation system.

Search for unusual combinations rather than one isolated event: a new identity followed by a RoleBinding, then a Secret read, an exec request, and GPU-node activity is materially more suspicious than a single failed request. Compare source addresses and user agents with approved bastions, build runners, and administrator workstations.

Examine high-risk API operations

Give priority to requests involving:

  • secrets, token creation, certificate signing, and service-account changes.
  • exec, attach, and portforward, which can provide interactive access or bypass normal service paths.
  • nodes/proxy, which can expose privileged kubelet APIs.
  • escalate and bind, which can bypass normal privilege protections when creating or assigning roles.
  • RoleBindings, ClusterRoleBindings, new ClusterRoles, admission configurations, webhooks, and impersonation settings.
  • Requests to the control-plane, etcd endpoints, or cloud-provider integrations.

Write access to the etcd backend is equivalent to root on the entire cluster. Treat any unexplained etcd access as a control-plane emergency, preserve the datastore and control-plane logs, and involve the team that manages the control plane before attempting repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-check identity-provider records

For each principal in the API timeline, check sign-ins, MFA results, refresh-token use, group changes, certificate issuance, token creation and revocation, and impossible travel or unfamiliar source networks. A valid username does not prove a valid session: stolen tokens and long-lived certificates can produce normal-looking usernames.

Also inspect non-human identities. Determine which service account each pod used, when its token was mounted or requested, which CI/CD job ran, and whether a cloud role or registry credential was available to that workload. Disable a suspected principal only after exporting its relevant records and preserving the incident timeline.

Inspect workloads, RBAC, and node state

Find unauthorized or altered workloads

Inventory pods, Deployments, StatefulSets, DaemonSets, Jobs, CronJobs, init containers, ephemeral containers, and admission webhooks created or modified during the window. Compare their manifests with version-controlled, approved configurations. Investigate:

  • DaemonSets and CronJobs that could recreate access after a pod is deleted.
  • Unexpected outbound connections, DNS lookups, reverse shells, mining-like processes, or transfers to unfamiliar storage.
  • Changes to GPU Operator components, device-plugin DaemonSets, driver containers, toolkit containers, or node-labeling logic.

Capture the live specification, status, container IDs, image digests, mounted volumes, environment-variable names, and network connections before stopping a suspicious workload. Do not copy Secret values into ordinary incident tickets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review RBAC and admission controls

Diff current RoleBindings, ClusterRoleBindings, Roles, ClusterRoles, service accounts, impersonation permissions, and admission policies against the last known-good configuration. Look for newly granted access to nodes, Secrets, workloads, or cloud-provider resources. A binding to a broad ClusterRole can be more important than the account that created it because it changes what that identity can do later.

Check whether policy changes allowed privileged, host-network, hostPath, or untrusted-image workloads. Record the previous and current object versions, the actor that changed them, and the first use of the new privilege.

Separate workload activity from node compromise

Use kubelet, operating-system, kernel, runtime, and process telemetry to determine whether activity stayed inside a container. Evidence of a host compromise includes unexplained processes outside container cgroups, altered system binaries, new users or SSH keys, modified systemd units or cron entries, kernel-module changes, disabled security controls, unexpected listening sockets, and access to other tenants’ data.

A pod can be malicious without proving that the node is compromised. Conversely, a clean pod inventory does not clear a host if an attacker used SSH, the kubelet, a driver interface, or a cloud management channel.

Correlate GPU allocation with scheduler and accounting records

Kubernetes exposes vendor GPUs through device-plugin resources such as nvidia.com/gpu. Compare every GPU allocation with an approved owner, project, queue or account, pod specification, and billing or quota record. In a Slurm-based environment, correlate job IDs, users, partitions, accounts, reservations, submit hosts, allocation times, and node lists.

Evidence Question to answer Suspicious mismatch
Scheduler or queue record Who requested the GPUs, under which account and project? A job has no approved owner, account, or ticket.
Pod or job specification What image, command, mounts, network, and identity ran? The runtime specification differs from the approved manifest or submission.
GPU telemetry Which process used each device, when, and at what utilization? GPU activity continues without a matching job or appears on an isolated node.
Node and runtime logs Did the process remain inside the assigned workload? Processes, files, or sockets appear outside the workload boundary.
Registry and CI/CD records Where did the image come from and who changed it? The digest was recently replaced, unsigned, or published by an unexpected principal.

GPU health tools can detect hardware and system faults, but they do not establish who accessed a cluster. A tool that automatically cordons or drains a faulty node can complement response operations; it cannot replace identity, authorization, API-audit, and host investigations.

Contain the incident without destroying evidence

After collecting the initial evidence, contain the smallest practical scope while preserving a path to recover. Record every action, operator, timestamp, and reason.

  1. Disable suspected identities. Suspend compromised user accounts, service accounts, tokens, certificates, cloud keys, registry credentials, SSH keys, and CI/CD secrets. If immediate revocation is impossible, block their source networks and reduce their permissions while evidence collection continues.
  2. Stop malicious execution. Suspend suspicious jobs and workloads after capturing their specifications, logs, process lists, and network state. Preserve the images and container layers needed for analysis.
  3. Isolate namespaces and networks. Apply restrictive network controls, deny unnecessary east-west traffic, block known command-and-control destinations, and separate affected tenants from control-plane and storage services.
  4. Protect uncertain nodes. Cordon nodes that may be compromised so new workloads cannot schedule there. Drain only when the operational and forensic plan permits it; draining can erase volatile evidence and spread workloads to other hosts.
  5. Protect the control plane and etcd. Restrict administrative paths, verify who can reach the API and datastore, and preserve control-plane snapshots and logs before changing configuration.
  6. Increase observation. Temporarily raise monitoring for authentication, RBAC, workload creation, node access, registry activity, and GPU allocations, while avoiding audit settings that expose Secret contents.

Rotate credentials and remove persistence

Use short credential lifetimes and frequent rotation as a normal control, then perform a coordinated rotation after an incident. Rotate in dependency order so workloads do not silently retain the old credential:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Revoke user sessions, refresh tokens, client certificates, and static tokens.
  2. Issue new service-account credentials and disable the old tokens; verify that no unauthorized pod still mounts them.
  3. Rotate cloud IAM keys, instance roles where necessary, registry passwords, signing keys, database passwords, storage credentials, SSH keys, and CI/CD secrets.
  4. Update Secrets through the approved secret-management path, restart only after evidence is preserved, and verify that old values are rejected.
  5. Re-authenticate automation and confirm that least-privilege scopes still permit the required jobs.

Search for persistence before deleting it: unauthorized RoleBindings, service accounts, admission webhooks, DaemonSets, CronJobs, startup scripts, systemd units, SSH keys, kernel modules, modified images, registry tags, cloud functions, and configuration-repository changes. Preserve a copy and hash of each artifact, then remove it through the controlled change process.

Rebuild any node whose integrity is uncertain

Do not return a GPU node to production merely because a scan is clean. If you cannot prove the host’s integrity, reimage or replace it. A rebuild should include:

  • A trusted, version-pinned operating-system image and verified boot or equivalent host-attestation controls.
  • Reinstalled kernel, GPU driver, container runtime, device plugin, and GPU Operator components from approved sources.
  • Validation of package, driver, image, and configuration hashes before workloads are scheduled.
  • Fresh node credentials, SSH material, cloud identity, registry authentication, labels, taints, and network policy.
  • Checks for firmware, bootloader, kernel-module, filesystem, and out-of-band-management changes when the threat model requires them.
  • A quarantine period with heightened host, runtime, network, scheduler, and GPU monitoring.

GPU Operator components may require privileged: true, hostPID: true, hostIPC: true, host-filesystem and hardware access, service restarts, and kernel-module loading. Those privileges make the Operator namespace a high-value administrative boundary. Only cluster administrators should manage it; enforce that rule with RBAC and Pod Security admission.

Restore workloads from known-good sources

Restore in dependency order: control-plane policy, namespaces and service accounts, network controls, secrets from rotated values, storage access, images by immutable digest, then workloads. Recreate manifests from a trusted repository rather than exporting possibly altered live objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before admitting a restored workload, verify its image digest and provenance, service-account permissions, mounts, capabilities, network policy, GPU request, node selectors, and resource limits. Reconcile scheduler or Slurm accounting with the restored inventory so every GPU allocation has an owner and purpose.

Monitor for recurrence across identity, API, RBAC, nodes, runtime, registry, CI/CD, cloud, scheduler, and GPU signals. Define local retention and alert thresholds from risk, compliance, and platform requirements; there is no universal detection threshold or retention period that fits every cluster.

Design controls that make the next investigation easier

Identity and authorization

  • Require MFA for human access and short-lived credentials wherever the platform supports them.
  • Use separate administrator, operator, developer, workload, and CI/CD identities.
  • Review privileged bindings, impersonation, escalate, bind, node access, and Secret access on a scheduled basis.
  • Keep the GPU Operator namespace restricted to cluster administrators.

Isolation and policy

  • Separate sensitive GPU workloads and control-plane services with dedicated nodes, taints, labels, and restrictive scheduling rules.
  • Use Pod Security admission and network policy to limit privileged, host-network, hostPath, and cross-namespace behavior.
  • Assume a container breakout is possible and design node isolation to prevent it from reaching more sensitive applications.

Audit and supply chain

  • Enable Kubernetes API auditing with a deliberate policy and send records to secure external storage.
  • Reduce audit detail for Secret requests while retaining enough metadata to investigate access.
  • Pin Kubernetes, GPU Operator, drivers, images, and dependencies; verify signatures or hashes before deployment.
  • Retain registry, build, deployment, scheduler, cloud, node, and GPU records together so a single identity timeline is possible.

Kubernetes and Slurm: investigation differences

The same incident method applies to both platforms, but the strongest evidence differs by control model.

Comparison axis Kubernetes-based GPU environment Slurm-based GPU environment
Identity and MFA Identity provider, client certificates, service accounts, cloud IAM, and API impersonation. Identity provider, SSH or bastion access, scheduler submission identity, and site-specific authentication.
Control-plane audit API audit events, RBAC, admission changes, kubelet access, and etcd protection. Controller, database, scheduler, command, and configuration-change logs.
Scheduler visibility Pod requests, device-plugin allocations, namespaces, and controller events. Job IDs, partitions, accounts, reservations, allocations, and accounting records.
Node isolation Namespaces, taints, labels, admission policy, network policy, and dedicated node pools. Partitions, node states, cgroups, prolog/epilog controls, and site network segmentation.
Credential rotation Service-account tokens, certificates, Secrets, cloud and registry credentials. SSH keys, scheduler credentials, service accounts, cloud and registry credentials.
External log durability API, identity, audit, runtime, registry, CI/CD, cloud, and GPU logs. Controller, scheduler, accounting, host, identity, registry, CI/CD, cloud, and GPU logs.
GPU privilege boundary Device plugin, driver, toolkit, and GPU Operator components may require host-level privileges. Driver and management tooling run on allocated nodes under site-specific privilege controls.
Rebuild decision Reimage a node when host integrity, kubelet, runtime, or driver trust cannot be established. Reimage a node when host, scheduler hooks, cgroups, drivers, or management access cannot be trusted.

Neither platform has a single “GPU intrusion” log. The reliable conclusion comes from correlating identity, authorization, scheduling, host, workload, and cloud evidence.
