How to Detect AI-Generated Content: What Detectors Can and Can’t Tell You

AI detectors can flag text that resembles examples associated with AI systems, but their scores do not prove who wrote it, whether AI was used, or whether a rule was broken. Treat a detector result as a reason to review the text and its context—not as an authorship verdict. Accuracy and error rates depend on the tool, the text, and the conditions in which it is tested.

What an AI text detector actually measures

A text detector analyzes patterns in submitted text and assigns a classification or score based on distinctions it learned from human- and machine-generated examples. That score describes the detector’s assessment of the text; it does not identify an author or establish how the text was produced. NIST’s text-to-text evaluation, for example, defines a higher confidence score as indicating a higher likelihood that a tested summary was generated with an LLM. The task is classification, not proof of authorship. NIST’s evaluation description and metrics

The score’s meaning depends on the product and its threshold. NIST evaluates systems using measures such as area under the curve (AUC), equal error rate, true-positive rate at a specified false-positive rate, and Bayes risk. These measures describe different aspects of performance and error trade-offs; no single score from one tool translates into a universal probability that a particular person used AI.

Why a detector result can be wrong

False positives and false negatives

A false positive is human-written text flagged as AI-generated; a false negative is AI-generated text that is not flagged. OpenAI’s now-discontinued text classifier illustrates both risks: on its English challenge set, it correctly labeled 26% of AI-written text as “likely AI-written” and incorrectly labeled 9% of human-written text as AI-written. Those results apply to that classifier and test set, not to current detectors generally. OpenAI discontinued the classifier on July 20, 2023, citing its low accuracy, and advised against using it as a primary decision-making tool. OpenAI’s notice on the retired classifier

Performance changes by system and test conditions

NIST’s 2024 pilot study found substantial variation between tested detectors and generators: some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected content from almost all tested generators. NIST also reported that detector systems improved across evaluation rounds. The result is not that detection always works or never works; performance depends on the specific systems and conditions being evaluated. NIST’s 2024 pilot study summary

A 2024 study of six detectors and 805 examples reported accuracy falling from 39.5% to 17.4% when generated texts were manipulated using evasion techniques. Those figures describe that paper’s dataset and experimental design, not a general accuracy rate for every detector. The authors argue against using the studied tools to determine academic-integrity violations. Study abstract

Length, language, genre, and editing affect results

Detector limits are product-specific. OpenAI said its retired classifier was very unreliable on texts shorter than 1,000 characters, performed worse outside English and on code, and could be evaded by editing. It also warned that classifications could be confidently wrong on text outside its training data. These are historical findings about that classifier, not a specification for other tools. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report has different stated boundaries. Its guide says the report requires qualifying prose in a long-form submission, supports English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic, and does not reliably detect code, poetry, scripts, tables, bullet points, or other short-form and unconventional writing. Product or study Documented scope or result How to interpret it
OpenAI text classifier, discontinued July 20, 2023 Very unreliable below 1,000 characters; worse outside English and on code; editing could evade it. Historical limitations of one classifier, not a current benchmark for other tools. OpenAI
Turnitin AI Writing Report At least 300 words of qualifying prose, no more than 30,000 words, and a file under 100 MB; supported languages listed as English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic. These are the vendor’s stated processing requirements. Text outside the stated scope, or a missing score, is not evidence either way. Turnitin
2024 study of six detectors Reported accuracy fell from 39.5% to 17.4% on manipulated generated texts in the study. A result for that study’s examples and methods, not a universal detector accuracy rate. Study abstract

How to interpret a Turnitin AI score

Turnitin says its overall percentage represents the portion of qualifying prose sentences in a submission that its model determines could be AI-generated, or AI-generated and then modified using an AI paraphrasing or bypassing tool. It is separate from the similarity score. It is not a plagiarism measure, a probability that a named person used AI, or proof of misconduct. Turnitin’s explanation of its AI Writing Report

Turnitin says it does not display an exact score in the 1–19% range because false positives are possible; its documentation reports greater false-positive incidence in the 0–19% range. This is how Turnitin handles its own report and should not be applied to other products. Turnitin’s score states and interpretation

What to do when a detector flags text

  1. Identify the tool and its scope. Check the product and report version, supported language, minimum text length, and eligible genres before interpreting the result.
  2. Read the score definition. Establish whether the displayed figure concerns AI-writing classification, similarity, or something else.
  3. Inspect the highlighted passages. Look at the specific text the tool assessed and whether it is prose or a content type the vendor says it does not reliably detect.
  4. Consider independent context. Drafts, version history, notes, source records, and the writer’s explanation can help clarify how a text developed. None is automatic proof on its own.
  5. Give the writer a chance to respond. If a consequential decision is at stake, allow the person to explain and correct the record rather than relying on one detector output.
  6. For tool comparisons, use a representative test set. Report false-positive and true-positive rates at stated thresholds, along with the genres, languages, text lengths, generator families, and editing conditions tested. NIST’s evaluation framework also includes AUC, equal error rate, and Bayes risk. NIST’s evaluation methods

Detectors, provenance, and watermarks are different tools

A classifier estimates likelihood from text patterns. Provenance methods aim to record or signal information about a file’s origin or handling; watermarking embeds a signal intended to persist in content. NIST treats authentication and tracking of provenance, synthetic-content labeling, detection, testing, and auditing as distinct technical approaches. A provenance indicator—or its absence—must be interpreted in light of coverage, robustness, and what happened to the content along the way. NIST’s report on synthetic-content transparency approaches

OpenAI’s 2024 discussion of C2PA metadata, watermarking, and classifiers emphasizes that metadata needs to be retained across platforms and intermediaries to support transparency. Its reported internal classifier results—about 98% correct identification of DALL·E 3 images, fewer than about 0.5% of non-AI images incorrectly tagged as DALL·E 3, and about 5–10% of images from other AI models flagged as DALL·E 3—are image results only. They say nothing about text-detector performance. OpenAI on identifying the source of online content

Can ChatGPT tell whether it wrote something?

Not reliably. OpenAI Help Center says ChatGPT has no knowledge of whether content is AI-generated or what it generated, and that answers to authorship questions may be made up. A chatbot’s confident claim that it did or did not write a passage should not be treated as verification. OpenAI Help Center: “Can I ask ChatGPT if it wrote something?”

Is there one detector that is most accurate?

The cited evidence does not establish a single commercial detector as the most accurate overall. NIST reports variation among tested systems, while vendor documentation describes particular products under particular conditions. A meaningful comparison needs the same representative texts, disclosed error rates and thresholds, relevant languages and genres, current generator families, and tests of ordinary editing or paraphrasing. A headline accuracy figure alone cannot show whether a tool is suitable for a particular decision.
