To detect a lightbox, look for a panel displayed above a page’s main content, then inspect that panel in your browser’s developer tools. Check its DOM and styles, and test whether keyboard focus stays inside it, whether the background remains interactive, and whether Escape dismisses it. Appearance alone is not conclusive: a lightbox may use a native HTML <dialog> or custom markup, and similar-looking panels can behave differently.
What counts as a lightbox?
“Lightbox” is a commonly used name for a modal-style pattern, but it is not a single HTML element or a guaranteed implementation. Typically, a panel appears above the page, often with a backdrop that dims or obscures the content behind it. Dialogs can also be non-modal, so an overlay does not by itself prove that the rest of the page is blocked. MDN describes dialog semantics and behavior in its ARIA dialog role reference; Accessible Web Dev also lists “lightbox” among names used for modal patterns in its Accessible Modals guide.
For a useful identification, keep three kinds of evidence separate: what the panel looks like, what its markup and accessibility information indicate, and what it actually does when you use the keyboard or try the background.
How to inspect a suspected lightbox
- Make the panel appear. Load the page and wait for it, or trigger it with the relevant control. Note whether the URL or other page state changes as part of the interaction.
- Open the element picker. In Chrome, open DevTools and activate Inspect mode from the action bar. Chrome documents Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, and Cmd+Option+C on macOS. See Chrome’s Inspect mode documentation.
- Select the panel itself. Point to the visible panel—not just the dimmed backdrop—and inspect its DOM node and parent elements. Look for a
<dialog>,role="dialog", a label, and the content grouped inside the panel. None of these clues alone proves that the page calls it a lightbox. - Inspect its styling and accessibility details. Use the Elements and Styles panels to examine the selected element and related overlay or backdrop. Check for fixed or viewport-relative positioning, dimensions, and whether the panel has a reported name and role or is keyboard-focusable. Chrome’s picker can expose information such as selectors, dimensions, colors, spacing, and accessibility properties; details are in the Inspect mode documentation.
- Test its behavior with the panel open. Use Tab and Shift+Tab to observe focus movement, press Escape, and try to interact with the page behind the panel. Record what happens rather than assuming every overlay should behave the same way.
How to tell a native modal dialog from a custom overlay
Native HTML dialog
Find an open <dialog> in the DOM. The important distinction is how it was opened: calling showModal() makes it modal, while show() or simply setting the open attribute does not create the same modal behavior. A modal opened with showModal() enters the browser’s top layer, gets a ::backdrop, and makes the rest of its document inert. MDN documents these details in its <dialog> element reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
With showModal(), focus moves inside the dialog and Escape closes it by default. Verify the behavior on the page rather than inferring it from the tag: code can customize behavior, and a dialog that was not opened modally is not equivalent. If the dialog is inside an iframe, the rest of the containing page remains interactive because modality applies to the document containing the dialog. These behaviors are also described in MDN’s dialog reference.
Custom overlay
A site can build a visually similar panel from ordinary elements such as <div> elements, CSS positioning, and JavaScript event handlers. It may add role="dialog" to communicate dialog semantics, but the role alone does not make the panel modal or establish that its focus management is accessible. A meaningful label and appropriate focus behavior matter too; see MDN’s ARIA dialog role reference.

What not to use as proof
- A high
z-index: It is not required for a lightbox. Native modal dialogs use the browser’s top layer, which sits above ordinary page stacking contexts, including content with a higherz-index. Chrome explains this in Top layer support in Chrome DevTools. - A
<dialog>tag by itself: The tag does not tell you whether the dialog was opened modally. Check for actual behavior and, when possible, how it was opened. role="dialog"by itself: A role is a semantic clue, not proof that the overlay blocks the background, manages focus correctly, or is labelled accessibly.- A backdrop by itself: A backdrop is common, but the panel’s interaction with the background and keyboard behavior are more informative than appearance alone.
How to compare two possible overlays
If a page has several panels, compare the same observable features for each. This helps distinguish a viewport-level modal lightbox from a tooltip, dropdown, non-modal dialog, or local positioned panel.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Does the panel overlay the viewport, or only a local component? |
| Background behavior | Can you interact with the content behind it, or is that content inert? |
| Implementation clues | Is it a native <dialog>, or custom markup? Does it expose dialog semantics and an accessible name? |
| Keyboard behavior | Where does focus go? Does it stay in the panel? Does Escape dismiss it? |
When the result is unclear
A page’s scripts, dynamic content, and frame structure can affect what is visible or selectable in DevTools. If the suspected panel is inside an iframe, inspect the relevant frame’s content and account for the fact that a modal dialog blocks only the document containing it. If you cannot establish the implementation, describe what you observed—for example, “an overlay panel that dims the page and closes with Escape”—rather than claiming a specific element or lightbox library.
