The lowest-breakage method is straightforward: thoroughly wet curly or coily hair, add rinse-out conditioner or a curly-hair leave-in, divide it into small sections, loosen knots with your fingers, and then work from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb or a brush made for curly/coily hair. Keep tension low, stop when a tool catches, and add water or conditioner instead of pulling harder.
Why curly hair needs a gentler detangling method
Curly and coily strands bend repeatedly along their length. Those bends can make it harder for the scalp’s natural oils to travel down the hair, so curly hair is often more prone to dryness. Dryness and repeated force make detangling a breakage risk, particularly when a large, compacted section is pulled from the roots through the ends in one stroke.

Breakage is different from normal shedding. Shed hairs have released from the follicle; a broken strand has snapped somewhere along its length. A detangling routine cannot identify every cause of snapping, but reducing friction, snagging and unnecessary tension is a sensible first step. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) describes curly hair as needing more conditioning than straight hair and recommends careful handling in its curly-hair care guidance.

The complete low-tension detangling sequence
1. Decide whether this is wash-day or between-wash detangling
For wash day, apply rinse-out conditioner through the entire length before you detangle. Thick curly hair can be combed in the shower while the conditioner is still on it, then rinsed as directed. For a between-wash session, thoroughly wet the hair and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner formulated for curly hair. Do not start on a merely damp surface with dry roots and dry ends; the tool needs enough water and product slip to move without snagging.

Wet hair can be fragile, so the advice is hair-type specific rather than universal. The AAD’s general healthy-hair guidance recommends gentle handling and a wide-tooth comb for wet hair, while its styling guidance says tightly curled or textured hair should be brushed wet to reduce the chance of breakage. For most other hair types, it advises limiting handling when wet. In other words, wet, conditioned detangling is a practical fit for curls and coils, not a rule that every texture should follow identically. See the AAD’s healthy-hair tips and hair-styling guidance.
2. Saturate and condition the hair
Use enough water that the hair is thoroughly wet from the outside into the section you are handling. Spread rinse-out conditioner over the full length rather than limiting it to the tips. If you are not washing, apply a curly-hair leave-in conditioner to damp lengths. AAD dermatologists advise using only as much leave-in as needed, applying it from the middle of the strands to the ends, and keeping it off the scalp. Thick hair may need more product than fine hair.
Rinse-out and leave-in conditioners are not interchangeable. They are made for different jobs and have different formulations, so do not dilute rinse-out conditioner in a spray bottle or leave it in as a substitute for a leave-in. AAD’s leave-in conditioner advice notes that a leave-in can remain on the hair for up to a week when used on the mid-lengths and ends, after which it should be washed out. Follow the label if it gives more restrictive instructions.

Sectioning prevents a tool from trying to pass through a dense mass all at once. The thicker, longer or more tightly coiled the hair, the smaller the sections generally need to be. Use fingers or clips to make several sections, and keep unworked hair separated so it does not re-tangle with hair that is already smooth.
A section is the right size when you can see the strands you are working on and move a tool through them without having to pull the whole section taut. If the tool stalls because the section is too large, split it again rather than increasing force.

4. Loosen the largest knots with your fingers
Start by feeling for compacted areas with your fingertips. Gently tease apart the outer edges of a knot, separating a few strands at a time. Fingers give you immediate feedback about resistance and can remove shed hairs or large tangles before a comb or brush encounters them.
Hold the section above the knot, between the knot and your scalp. This stabilizes the hair at the point where you are working and limits the tug transmitted to the roots. The technique is practical tension control, not a promise that every knot can be removed without any hair loss. If your fingers cannot make progress, add water or conditioner and wait a moment for the product to spread before trying again.

5. Start at the ends and move upward
Once the outer tangle is loose, work on the last few centimeters of the section first. Release the ends, then move gradually higher, overlapping the area you have already cleared. This prevents an unresolved knot near the middle from being pushed into a tighter knot at the tips.
Use short, gentle strokes rather than one long pull from roots to ends. After each stroke, remove the tool, check the section and repeat. When it catches, stop. Do not yank, twist the tool through the snag or hold the hair under increasing tension. Re-wet the area or add a little more conditioner, separate the knot with your fingers and resume with less hair in the section.
6. Finish the section before moving on
Continue upward until the tool can travel from the roots through the ends with little resistance. Then place the detangled section aside or loosely twist it so it cannot mix with the remaining knots. Repeat the same process on each section. Keeping the sections organized is especially useful for long or thick hair, where an apparently finished area can otherwise become tangled again while you work elsewhere.

7. Rinse or style without undoing the work
On wash day, rinse the conditioner according to its label after detangling. Avoid rough scrubbing or piling the hair on top of the head, which can create new tangles. For between-wash detangling, leave the small amount of leave-in on the damp lengths as directed; do not apply it directly to the scalp.

Do not make dry brushing the normal way you detangle curls. A dry brush can separate curl clumps and force through resistance without the water and conditioning slip that make wet detangling more controlled.
Choosing a tool: fingers, comb or curly-hair brush
No single tool is best for every curl pattern, density or routine. The useful test is what happens on your own wet, conditioned hair: does the tool move with little snagging, can you control it section by section, and does it preserve the curl pattern you want? These are practical criteria, not results from a published head-to-head trial.
| Option | When it helps | How to use it with less tension |
|---|---|---|
| Fingers | Finding and loosening large knots; giving the most direct feedback about resistance | Separate a few strands at a time, hold the hair above the knot and add water or conditioner when the knot does not release |
| Wide-tooth comb | A simple tool for wet, conditioned sections; the clearest general-purpose comb category supported by AAD guidance | Begin at the ends, use short strokes, and move upward only after the lower part is clear |
| Brush designed for curly or coily hair | Working through conditioned curls when its shape and spacing suit your density and curl pattern | Use it on thoroughly wet, conditioned hair, in small sections, with minimal pressure; stop at any catch |
A tool that works well for one person can snag another person’s hair because density, strand thickness, curl tightness, length and product buildup differ. If a comb is comfortable on wash day but a brush pulls during a quick refresh, use the comb or your fingers for that situation. The goal is not to prove loyalty to one tool; it is to finish with the least force necessary.
Rinse-out conditioner and leave-in conditioner: using each correctly
Rinse-out conditioner on wash day
Apply conditioner over the full length of curly hair. Thick curls may be combed in the shower before the conditioner is rinsed, a specific recommendation in AAD’s curly-hair advice. Keeping the hair coated while you work supplies slip and lets you rinse away the product afterward.

Follow the product’s stated application and rinse instructions. A rinse-out formula is designed to be removed; leaving it in can create an unsuitable residue or weigh down the hair.
Leave-in conditioner between washes
Choose a product labeled for curly hair and apply a small amount to damp lengths, starting around the middle of the strands and moving toward the ends. Use only enough to make the section easier to separate. Thick hair may need more than fine hair, but adding product cannot compensate for forcing a dry or oversized section.
Leave-in conditioner is a detangling aid, not a guarantee against breakage. AAD dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD, explains that the effect should be noticeable right away: “Your hair should be easier to brush or comb, so you’ll have less breakage.” Paradi Mirmirani, MD, FAAD, similarly says, “It’s immediate. Your hair will be easier to comb and feel smoother.” Those comments describe easier combing and reduced handling stress, not a measured promise that a particular product prevents all breakage.
Wash-day versus between-wash detangling
| Situation | Preparation | Best sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Wash day | Condition the full length; thick curly hair can be handled in the shower before rinsing | Section, finger-loosen, use a wide-tooth comb or curly/coily brush from ends upward, then rinse |
| Between washes | Wet the hair thoroughly and apply a small amount of curly-hair leave-in to damp lengths | Work in small sections, add moisture whenever the hair catches, then leave the product on as directed |
The same low-tension principle applies in both situations. The difference is the product: rinse-out conditioner is removed, while leave-in is used sparingly on the lengths and remains until the next wash or the label’s stated limit.
What to do when a knot will not release
If the tool stops at the ends
Remove the tool instead of pulling. Add water and a little conditioner or leave-in, pinch the hair above the knot, and use your fingers to open the outer edge. Reduce the section size and return to short strokes at the tips.

If the knot is close to the scalp
Stabilize the hair just above the knot so the root is not bearing the full tug. Work outward from the knot’s edge with your fingers. A wide-tooth comb can follow once the compacted area is smaller. If the scalp hurts, pause; pain is a signal to reduce tension, not to speed up.
If the hair dries while you are working
Re-wet the unfinished section thoroughly. Add enough conditioner or leave-in for the strands to feel slippery, then continue only after the product is distributed. Trying to finish a drying section with increasingly firm strokes creates the exact friction the routine is intended to avoid.
If the hair tangles again immediately
Check whether the sections are too large, whether unworked hair is mixing with finished hair, or whether the hair lacks enough moisture. Keep completed sections separate and make the next sections smaller. If the same area repeatedly mats, note when it happens—after sleeping, exercise, product buildup or a particular styling method—and adjust that part of the routine rather than repeatedly forcing the knot out.
Common breakage-causing habits to replace
- Dry brushing as the default: Detangle curls wet with conditioner or leave-in instead, because dry resistance encourages pulling and can disrupt curl clumps.
- Starting at the roots: Clear the ends first, then work progressively upward so the tool does not drive every lower tangle into a tighter mass.
- Using one oversized section: Divide long or thick hair until the tool can travel without dragging the whole section.
- Ignoring a catch: Stop, add water or conditioner and reduce the section. A snag is a cue to change the conditions, not to increase force.
- Leaving rinse-out conditioner in: Use a properly formulated leave-in when you need a between-wash product; rinse out the rinse-out formula as directed.
- Applying leave-in to the scalp: Keep it on the mid-lengths and ends unless the product label gives different instructions.
- Assuming every curl needs the same tool: Compare comfort, snagging, control and curl preservation on your own conditioned hair.
How often should curly hair be washed?
Wash frequency depends on scalp needs, hair density, styling products and personal comfort. AAD’s curly-hair article gives a general recommendation that thick curly hair may be washed at least every two to three weeks for scalp and hair health. That is general guidance, not an individualized schedule or a detangling statistic. If your scalp becomes uncomfortable, visibly flaky or excessively oily sooner, or if your hair requires more frequent cleansing because of products or activity, seek personalized advice rather than forcing a fixed interval.
When persistent breakage needs medical advice
Consult a board-certified dermatologist if breakage continues or your hair remains unmanageable after you have used both rinse-out and leave-in conditioner with gentle, section-by-section detangling. The dermatologist can assess your scalp and hair rather than guessing at a cause from an online description. The guidance above does not define a normal shed count or diagnose hair loss.
Arrange an appointment sooner if you notice scalp pain, sores, marked thinning, sudden changes or another symptom that concerns you. Bring the products and styling practices you use, and describe when the snapping began; that information helps the clinician evaluate the problem.
