Do not brush a dry knot. Thoroughly wet the hair, coat it with rinse-out or leave-in conditioner, divide it into sections, and loosen the ends with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb before moving toward the roots. If the hair is a stiff, immovable mat—or the scalp is painful, swollen, crusted, leaking, foul-smelling, or may have lice—stop pulling and arrange professional assessment.
This method follows dermatologists’ guidance for curly, dry, tangled, and brittle hair. It also distinguishes routine tangling from acute hair matting, which may require manual separation or removal by a qualified professional.

Why dry curly hair needs a different approach
Curly and coily strands bend around one another, so friction can turn a few small catches into a dense knot. When the hair is dry, a brush can snag those bends instead of sliding between them. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises avoiding brushing curly hair while it is dry because dry brushing can cause breakage and frizz: AAD curly-hair care guidance.
“Dry” and “severely knotted” are not the same condition. Dryness describes the hair’s feel and lack of slip. A severe knot can still be softened and separated. A fixed mat is a tightly packed mass that will not yield to gentle handling; DermNet New Zealand describes acute hair matting as a cemented entanglement that can contain dirt, crust, pus, blood, or lice: DermNet’s acute hair-matting overview. Treating every tangle as a medical problem is unnecessary, but forcing an immovable mat is unsafe.

Hair itself cannot repair structural injury. Dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD, explains:
“One of the most common misconceptions about hair is that it is alive, when in fact hair is nonliving and does not heal itself once it is injured.”
The practical implication is simple: spend time adding water and slip before adding force. A strand that breaks during detangling cannot be restored by later conditioning.

| Situation | Starting point | Recommended handling |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary dry tangles | Wet the hair thoroughly | Condition, section, finger-detangle, then use a wide-tooth comb if needed |
| Very dry or difficult hair before shampoo | Apply conditioner before washing | Loosen sections gently, then shampoo after the knots release |
| Between wash days | Thoroughly wet the hair and apply leave-in conditioner | Use fingers or a wide-tooth comb; re-wet whenever the hair resists |
| Thick curly hair on wash day | Work in the shower with conditioner in place | Comb before rinsing the conditioner, as advised by the AAD |
| Stiff, fixed mat or symptomatic scalp | Stop home detangling | Seek a dermatologist or another qualified professional |
The table is a decision aid, not a promise that every knot will come out intact. Hair density, length, prior damage, and how tightly the strands are packed determine how long gentle separation takes.
What to gather before you start
- Water from a shower, bath, or sink so every section can become thoroughly wet.
- Rinse-out conditioner for a wash-day session.
- Leave-in conditioner for detangling between washes; the AAD lists leave-in conditioner as an option for curly, dry, tangled, or brittle hair: AAD leave-in-conditioner guidance.
- Your fingers and, if necessary, a wide-tooth comb. A brush designed for curly or coily hair is another possible tool, but it is not a reason to brush dry hair.
- Clips or ties for keeping already separated sections apart.
- A soft towel or T-shirt for absorbing water without rough rubbing.
Set aside enough time to stop and add more water or conditioner. Rushing encourages the one action most likely to cause damage: pulling a resistant tool through the knot.
Step-by-step method for ordinary tangles
1. Check the scalp and decide whether this is routine tangling
Look and feel before applying a comb. Ordinary tangles usually have some movement: you can identify individual strands, spread the cluster slightly with your fingers, or feel the hair begin to separate after adding moisture. A hard, compact mass that feels cemented to itself is different. Also check for pain, swelling, discharge, crusting, a foul odor, or signs that lice may be present. Those findings move the situation into the professional-help route described below.

2. Wet the hair completely
If the hair is dry, do not begin with a brush or comb. Put it under water until the outer layer and the hair inside the section are wet. Surface dampness is not enough for a dense knot; lift and separate the hair with your hands so water can reach the interior. If showering is difficult, wet manageable sections at a sink, but do not start pulling while only the outside is damp.
3. Add the appropriate conditioner
For a wash-day session, distribute rinse-out conditioner through the wet hair. The AAD recommends conditioning curly hair and notes that conditioner can be applied before shampooing when hair is very dry or difficult to detangle: AAD curly-hair care guidance. Pre-wash conditioning is useful when shampooing first would leave a dry, tightly tangled mass to handle.
For between-wash detangling, thoroughly wet the hair first and apply leave-in conditioner. Keep the product on the strands you are trying to separate rather than treating it as a substitute for water. If a section begins to feel grabby, pause and add more water or leave-in conditioner instead of increasing pressure.
4. Divide the hair into sections
Separate long or thick hair into sections small enough that your fingers can see and feel the knot. Clip or hold the untouched sections out of the way. Sectioning limits the amount of hair being moved at once, lets you keep conditioner where it is needed, and prevents a loosened area from tangling again with hair you have not worked through.
5. Start with your fingers
Place one hand above the knot to reduce traction at the scalp. With the other hand, gently tease apart the lowest ends of the section. Feel for individual strands that are crossing or wrapped around one another and release those strands one at a time. Finger work gives immediate feedback: if the cluster tightens, stop and change direction rather than pulling harder.
6. Move from the ends upward
Once the tips have some movement, work a little higher. Do not put a comb at the roots and drag it through the entire knot; that concentrates every snag into one forceful pull. Continue in short, released portions until you can move from the ends through the middle and finally toward the roots. The AAD’s general hair guidance recommends a wide-tooth comb for wet hair and an ends-first approach: AAD healthy-hair tips.
7. Introduce a wide-tooth comb only when the section is ready
When your fingers can pass through most of the section, use a wide-tooth comb if you want additional separation. Keep the section supported near the roots, begin at the ends, and advance upward in small passes. A comb should glide through released hair; resistance is a signal to return to your fingers, add slip, or re-wet the area. It is not a signal to push harder.

8. Rinse or style after the knots have loosened
Finish rinsing only after the section is substantially separated. If you are styling between washes, arrange the hair without pulling the newly loosened strands into a tight style. The goal is to remove the knot while preserving as much intact hair as possible, not to achieve a particular curl pattern during the detangling step.

9. Remove excess water gently
Do not rough-rub curly hair with a towel. The AAD recommends gently absorbing moisture with a towel or T-shirt: AAD healthy-hair tips. Press or wrap the hair so the fabric absorbs water; rubbing can recreate friction immediately after you have separated the strands.
Adjustments for specific situations
When the hair is very dry before shampooing
Use a pre-wash conditioning session. Apply conditioner to the dry, difficult areas, then add enough water for the conditioner to spread through the section. Separate with your fingers first and work upward from the ends. Once the hair is manageable, wash as usual. This option comes directly from the AAD’s curly-hair guidance and is intended for hair that is too dry or difficult to detangle comfortably after shampooing.
When you are detangling between washes
Thoroughly wet the hair and apply leave-in conditioner rather than trying to refresh a dry knot with a brush. Work one section at a time, using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Leave-in conditioner is especially relevant when hair is curly, dry, tangled, or brittle, according to the AAD: AAD healthy-hair tips. Support each section near the scalp so the weight of wet hair is not transferred to a single snag.

When only one small knot is causing trouble
Do not comb the surrounding hair repeatedly. Isolate the knot, wet it, add conditioner, and use your fingers to identify where strands enter and leave. A small section makes it easier to preserve loose hair and prevents a local problem from becoming a whole-head brushing session.
How to tell a severe mat from a difficult tangle
A difficult tangle still has separable strands and responds, at least slightly, to water, conditioner, and patient finger work. A mat is a densely compacted mass with little or no internal movement. DermNet New Zealand’s description of acute hair matting includes tightly packed, cemented hair and possible contamination with dirt, crust, pus, blood, or lice: DermNet acute hair matting.

Stop home detangling and seek professional evaluation when any of these apply:
- The mass remains fixed after thorough wetting and conditioning.
- Attempts at gentle finger separation cause scalp pain or strong pulling.
- The scalp is swollen, bleeding, crusted, draining, or has a foul odor.
- You suspect lice or another scalp condition.
- Hair breakage is increasing, or the hair remains unmanageable despite appropriate conditioning and gentle handling.
A dermatologist can assess the scalp and determine whether the problem is ordinary tangling, a scalp disorder, infestation, or acute matting. A trained hair professional may be able to separate some mats manually. DermNet notes that treatment for acute matting can include manual separation or cutting out the matted hair, so no responsible method can promise that every severe mat will be saved intact.

Do not pour an unverified solvent, pesticide, or harsh chemical onto the scalp or mat. Do not keep combing for a prolonged period simply because the hair has not released. Persistent force can injure the scalp and break hair while leaving the central mat unchanged.
Fingers or a wide-tooth comb?
The AAD names both fingers and a wide-tooth comb as suitable options for curly-hair detangling. Neither is universally best; choose based on how much control the section needs.
| Option | Useful when | How to use it safely |
|---|---|---|
| Fingers | You need to locate individual crossings, release a compact spot, or monitor scalp tension closely | Use wet, conditioned hair; separate small strands from the ends upward |
| Wide-tooth comb | Your fingers have already opened the section and you want consistent spacing through wet hair | Support the section, begin at the ends, and stop at resistance |
| Curly/coily-hair brush | You already use a brush designed for your texture and the hair is wet and conditioned | Follow the same sectioned, ends-first process; do not use it to brush dry hair |
Tool choice does not override the basic sequence. Water, conditioner, sectioning, and low tension do more to protect the hair than a particular brand or shape of tool.

The comb stops halfway through
Remove it instead of forcing it onward. Return to the last point that moved freely, add water or conditioner, and use your fingers to split the resistant area into smaller pieces. Resume with short ends-first passes only after the strands begin to separate.
The hair feels rough again after conditioning
The section may not be wet throughout, or the product may not have reached the interior of the knot. Lift the section, wet it again, and redistribute conditioner with your fingers. Do not compensate for a dry interior by increasing comb pressure.

You see many short broken hairs
Stop the current pass and assess your technique. Pulling from the roots, working sections that are too large, or brushing while dry can increase breakage. Give the hair more slip and support the section near the scalp before trying again. If breakage or unmanageable hair persists, the AAD advises seeking dermatologist help: AAD leave-in-conditioner guidance.
The scalp starts to hurt
Release the tool and inspect the area. Pain is a reason to stop applying traction, particularly if there is swelling, crusting, discharge, odor, or suspected lice. Arrange professional evaluation rather than treating the symptom with more conditioner and force.
The knot loosens but immediately reforms
Keep the released section separate from unfinished hair. Continue in smaller sections and avoid rough towel rubbing afterward. Once the hair is dry, handle it gently; returning to dry brushing can recreate the same cycle of friction, frizz, and breakage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPreventing the next severe tangle
- Condition curly hair consistently, using rinse-out conditioner on wash days and leave-in conditioner when between-wash detangling requires extra slip.
- Detangle while the hair is thoroughly wet rather than waiting until a dry knot has expanded.
- For thick curls, use the shower and comb before rinsing conditioner.
- Keep sections manageable during washing and detangling so loose hair does not wrap around unfinished areas.
- Use fingers to find resistant spots before introducing a comb.
- Dry by gently absorbing water with a towel or T-shirt instead of rubbing.
- Stop early when the hair or scalp shows increasing resistance, pain, or signs of injury.
These habits reduce avoidable friction, but they cannot guarantee that a neglected or externally caused mat will separate. If a fixed mass develops, professional assessment is safer than escalating home force.
When to get help instead of trying another technique
Home detangling is appropriate for ordinary knots that soften and gradually release. It is not an endurance test for a cemented mat. A dermatologist can examine concerning scalp symptoms, and a qualified hair professional can advise whether manual separation is realistic or whether removing the matted portion is the least harmful option. Seeking help early preserves more options than waiting until repeated pulling causes extensive breakage or scalp injury.
The safest order is therefore consistent: wet first, add conditioner, section the hair, use fingers, move from ends toward roots, introduce a wide-tooth comb only when it glides, and stop when the hair or scalp gives a warning. Curly hair does not need force to be detangled; it needs moisture, slip, control, and a clear boundary for when home care has reached its limit.
