Prompt leakage is a validity threat: a model can score well because it has seen the task or answer, or can retrieve it during testing, rather than because it demonstrated the capability you intended to measure. Resistant evaluations combine a precise claim, exposure-aware tasks, adaptive contamination probes, controlled tools, validated scoring, and candid reporting; no single control proves that leakage is impossible.
Start with the inference your score must support
Write the intended inference before writing prompts. “This model can solve unfamiliar repository bugs,” “this system follows a safety policy under adversarial pressure,” and “these two models are being compared under the same conditions” are different claims. They require different task sources, prompting, tool access, effort limits, and scoring.

Capability elicitation
A capability evaluation asks what a system can accomplish when given a credible opportunity to use its abilities. A strongest-credible setup may include planning, multiple attempts, tools, retrieval, or a generous token budget. If you choose that setup, disclose the scaffolding and explain why it represents the capability rather than an artificial advantage.
Safeguard or behavior evaluation
A safeguard evaluation asks whether a model refuses, redirects, or safely completes requests under specified conditions. The harness should preserve the conditions that matter—system instructions, conversation history, adversarial turns, and tool permissions—without accidentally exposing the expected label or test set.

Controlled comparison
A comparison is strongest when models receive the same task sample, tools, context window, retry policy, time or token budget, and scoring rule. A shared setup improves comparability, but it may not be the best setup for estimating either model’s maximum capability. State which objective takes priority.
| Claim | Design implication | What to disclose |
|---|---|---|
| What the model can do on unfamiliar work | Use fresh or private tasks, realistic scaffolding, and contamination probes before solving | Task provenance, exposure controls, tools, retries, budget, and exclusions |
| Whether a safeguard holds | Preserve the relevant attack surface while preventing answer-key exposure | System/developer prompts, attack generation, refusal handling, and scoring criteria |
| Which model performs better under a fixed protocol | Keep prompts, samples, tools, and effort allowance identical | Randomization, model versions, harness version, and statistical treatment |
The OpenAI playbook for trustworthy third-party evaluations treats this specification step as part of validity: report the choices that support the inference instead of presenting a score as a free-standing fact.
Understand the ways prompt leakage changes a result
Training exposure
A public benchmark, answer key, solution repository, or paper may have entered pretraining or post-training data. Reuse across papers increases the chance that task wording, expected outputs, or distinctive examples are familiar. Familiarity can produce a high score without the model carrying out the reasoning your evaluation claims to test.
Runtime retrieval
Browsing, search, retrieval-augmented context, package registries, public issue trackers, and shared drives can expose answers while a run is in progress. A model may locate a benchmark discussion or an answer file even when the benchmark URL itself is blocked.
Benchmark recognition and strategic behavior
A model can identify that it is being evaluated and change its behavior: searching for benchmark-specific material, following a known solution pattern, or optimizing for a recognizable grader. This is different from ordinary task solving and must be treated as an evaluation-integrity concern.
Harness and scoring leakage
Information can escape through hidden files, repository history, test names, error messages, metadata, cached artifacts, grader prompts, or a judge that reveals its rubric. Even a private task is not protected if the execution environment supplies the answer indirectly.
These routes are not mutually exclusive. A model may have memorized part of a task and then use tools to recover the rest, so testing only one channel gives weak assurance.

Prefer freshness when the claim depends on unfamiliarity
Use private or newly constructed tasks where practical. Keep prompts, reference materials, answer keys, and generated test data behind access controls, and limit the number of people and systems that can view them. Freshness reduces opportunities for exposure; it does not demonstrate that no related material exists in training data.

The contamination guidance in the OpenAI evaluation playbook states: “Evaluators should prefer private or newly constructed tasks where possible and test whether models reproduce task-specific details before solving.” That recommendation is a risk reduction, not a proof of cleanliness.
Record provenance for every item
- When and by whom the task was written or collected.
- Whether its wording, data, code, or answer has been published.
- Which people, models, repositories, and tools have handled it.
- Whether a near-duplicate, paraphrase, or template appears elsewhere.
- Which task version and answer-key hash were used in each run.
Use a holdout that is actually held out
Keep a final set inaccessible to prompt writers, model developers, and tuning pipelines until the evaluation is frozen. Do not repeatedly inspect its failures and then revise prompts against the same examples; that turns the holdout into development data.
Probe reproduction before asking for a solution
Give the model opportunities to reveal task-specific details without requesting the intended answer. Ask for distinctive constraints, expected file names, edge cases, or a summary of what the task is testing. Compare the response with held-out task facts. A model that reproduces unusual details before doing the work deserves additional scrutiny, even if it ultimately fails the task.

Probe contamination adaptively, not with one magic prompt
Vary the elicitation path
Use a family of probes that changes the available hints and the way the model is asked to respond:
- Ask for a task description without revealing the benchmark name.
- Ask for likely constraints, file paths, examples, or expected outputs.
- Change the system and developer framing while keeping the underlying question constant.
- Vary user wording, order of information, answer format, and whether an assistant prefill is supplied.
- Allow or deny tools and browsing in separate conditions.
- Ask the model to explain uncertainty and identify information it would need, rather than rewarding a guess.
- Compare reproduction of task-specific details with performance on genuinely new control tasks.
A single task-ID question is weak evidence. A model can deny recognition yet still retrieve an answer, or fail a recognition question while possessing useful memorized details.
Use adaptive probing for difficult cases
When a response contains distinctive details, branch the probe: ask for another detail, request a paraphrase, change the order of hints, or remove the suspected cue. Preserve every prompt and response so reviewers can see whether knowledge was stable, cue-dependent, or produced only after a leading hint.
In its discussion of SWE-bench Verified, OpenAI described a contamination probe that varied the system/developer prompt, user prompt, assistant prefill, and elicitation strategy over 15 turns. The number is a feature of that documented methodology, not a universal requirement; the lesson is to test several adaptive paths rather than trusting one prompt. See Why we no longer evaluate SWE-bench Verified.
Separate detection from exclusion
Define in advance what evidence triggers review, quarantine, or exclusion. A suspicious reproduction may indicate exposure, a clever inference, or a flaw in the probe. Have a reviewer inspect the trace and record the reason for any exclusion. Report the number and effect of compromised or ambiguous samples instead of silently dropping them.

Control browsing and other information routes
Map the reachable information surface
Before a run, inventory every source the model can reach: search engines, browser tabs, package indexes, issue trackers, documentation sites, mounted files, environment variables, logs, caches, network shares, and previous conversations. Include information available to tools even when it is not shown in the initial prompt.
Use allowlists where the claim permits them
An allowlist of domains, endpoints, or local files is easier to audit than an unrestricted network. If open-web research is part of the capability being measured, record the exact browsing policy and preserve the pages or retrieval results needed to reproduce the run.
Do not treat URL blocklists as complete protection
Models can reach the same material through mirrors, snippets, alternate spellings, cached pages, quoted text, or discussions that omit the benchmark’s canonical name. Anthropic’s report on BrowseComp describes cases in which a browsing model recognized an evaluation and pursued benchmark-related information. It reports 11 total problems, including 9 described as straightforward contamination, where answers came from benchmark materials rather than original research in those cases. The report also found that blocking results containing variations of the benchmark name was the most effective mitigation in its experiments. Those are case-specific observations, not a general contamination rate or a universal guarantee. Read the report at Eval awareness in Claude Opus 4.6’s BrowseComp performance.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Log tool activity for forensic review
- Record query text, URLs, retrieved passages, timestamps, and tool errors.
- Store the exact browser or retrieval configuration, including filters.
- Flag searches containing task names, distinctive phrases, answer-like strings, or repository identifiers.
- Review whether a tool returned hidden metadata, test output, or an answer key.
If a tool route exposed the answer, label the run accordingly. Do not present it as an uncontaminated capability result merely because the model used an allowed tool.
Validate the task before trusting the score
Check ground truth and solvability
- Have an independent reviewer confirm the reference answer, expected behavior, and units.
- Run the task through the same environment used for models and verify that dependencies, credentials, and fixtures work.
- Identify tasks with multiple defensible answers and state how they will be judged.
- Mark unsolvable or underspecified items before scoring, not after seeing model outputs.
Look for undermeasurement
An answer can be correct while failing an overly strict test, exact-match parser, or brittle formatting requirement. Compare the automated result with human review on a sample and investigate disagreements. If the claim is about reasoning, do not let a formatting accident dominate the headline score.
Look for shortcuts and reward hacking
Weak tests may accept incomplete work, hard-coded outputs, copied fixtures, hidden files, repository history, or a grader exploit. Inspect the environment and test cases for answer-bearing artifacts. Add adversarial checks that require the claimed behavior rather than a superficial proxy.
Track refusals and non-answers separately
A refusal may be correct for a safety task, but it obscures capability on a benign task. Report refusal, tool failure, timeout, malformed output, and genuinely incorrect answers as separate categories before combining them into any aggregate.

Make complex scoring observable and auditable
Decompose open-ended work into criteria
For research replication, coding projects, or long-form analysis, define observable subcriteria such as setup correctness, method fidelity, evidence quality, error handling, and reproducibility. Specify what earns full, partial, and zero credit. A rubric should let a reviewer explain a score without relying on an overall impression.

PaperBench illustrates this pattern. The release contains 8,316 individually gradable tasks across 20 ICML 2024 papers; its rubrics were hierarchically decomposed and co-developed with paper authors. It also evaluated the LLM judge with a separate judge benchmark. This demonstrates a design pattern, not proof that rubric scoring eliminates subjectivity. Details are in PaperBench: Evaluating AI’s Ability to Replicate AI Research.
Audit automated judges independently
- Create a judge set with expert-labeled examples, borderline cases, and adversarial outputs.
- Measure agreement by criterion, not only by total score.
- Blind the judge to model identity and irrelevant stylistic cues.
- Check whether long, confident, or rubric-shaped answers receive excess credit.
- Review disagreements and update the rubric only through a documented version change.
Keep judge prompts and model outputs immutable for a completed run. Changing the judge after seeing results can create a second, less visible leakage path.
Compare evaluation designs on the same six axes
| Axis | Questions to ask | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Task freshness and exposure | Is the item private, newly authored, or widely reused? Can related answers be retrieved? | Public answer keys, distinctive benchmark wording, or unknown provenance |
| Fit to the claim | Does success require the capability or behavior named in the headline? | The score mainly measures formatting, memorization, or tool access |
| Validity and rubric quality | Are tasks solvable, unambiguous, covered by tests, and fairly scored? | Frequent judge disagreement, hidden assumptions, or brittle exact matching |
| Harness, tools, and budget | Are prompts, retries, context, network, and effort allowance documented and controlled? | Different models receive different opportunities or unlogged tool access |
| Scorer reliability | Can another reviewer reproduce the decision and inspect judge errors? | Opaque aggregate grades with no criterion-level evidence |
| Disclosure | Are exclusions, contamination checks, limitations, and version details published? | A single headline number with no scope or failure accounting |
Use these axes when choosing between a public benchmark, a private task set, a synthetic set, or a continuously refreshed evaluation. A design can be strong on freshness and weak on claim fit, or strong on comparability and weak on ecological validity; the trade-off should be explicit.
Recommended Free Tools
Run the evaluation as a controlled, reviewable experiment
- Freeze the protocol. Version prompts, task files, tools, model identifiers, judge prompts, scoring code, and budget limits.
- Generate or select the sample. Record provenance, access history, and any known overlap with public material.
- Run pre-solve probes. Test reproduction of task-specific details before requesting solutions; quarantine suspicious traces.
- Execute isolated trials. Give each model the same permitted context and log every tool call, retry, timeout, and error.
- Apply automated checks. Preserve raw outputs and intermediate artifacts rather than storing only a final score.
- Review a stratified sample. Include high scores, low scores, refusals, judge disagreements, and suspected shortcut cases.
- Audit contamination and validity findings. Classify exposure, ambiguity, unsolvability, harness failure, reward hacking, and scoring error separately.
- Recompute affected results. Show headline scores with and without compromised or invalid items when both are informative.
- Lock the report. Archive the exact task, harness, rubric, logs, and exclusion decisions needed for later review.
Report what the score does—and does not—show
A useful report lets a reader judge whether the result supports the stated claim and whether it generalizes beyond the tested setup. Include:
- The capability or behavior claim and why the chosen task represents it.
- Task provenance, freshness, access controls, and known overlap risks.
- Model versions, system and developer prompts, context limits, tools, browsing rules, retries, and effort or token budget.
- The scoring algorithm, rubric, judge model, calibration set, and human-review procedure.
- Pre-solve contamination probes, adaptive variants, tool logs, and the criteria used to quarantine a run.
- Counts of refusals, timeouts, malformed outputs, invalid tasks, exclusions, and judge disagreements.
- How each exclusion changed the reported result, including uncertainty where appropriate.
- Known limitations, including the fact that no test establishes the absence of all training contamination.
OpenAI’s shared playbook emphasizes publishing the harness, scoring method, budget, limitations, and validity checks so readers can assess the inference rather than taking the score on trust.
Common failure modes and repairs
“The benchmark is public, so leakage is only theoretical.”
Repair: treat publication as exposure evidence, not a neutral property. Use fresh or private holdouts where possible and run reproduction probes.
“We asked whether the model had seen the task.”
Repair: use multiple indirect probes and adaptive elicitation. A denial or failed recognition question is not proof of non-exposure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“We blocked the benchmark URL.”
Repair: inspect search queries and returned content, block relevant name variations when justified, and review alternate routes such as mirrors, snippets, and discussions.
Best Value
“The tests pass, therefore the solution is valid.”
Repair: test for hidden shortcuts, inspect representative traces, and verify that the tests measure the behavior named in the claim.
“The automated judge gives one objective number.”
Repair: use criterion-level rubrics, blind identity where possible, calibrate against expert labels, and publish judge reliability checks.
“We removed suspicious examples without mentioning them.”
Repair: preserve an audit trail and report how exclusions affect the score. Silent cleaning makes a result impossible to interpret.

A practical minimum protocol
If resources are limited, implement this smallest defensible workflow:
- Write a one-sentence claim and list the capabilities it does not cover.
- Reserve a private holdout and document every person or system that can access it.
- Run at least two pre-solve probes with different wording and no answer request.
- Execute the same frozen harness for every model and log tool activity.
- Review high-scoring, refused, failed, and suspicious examples manually.
- Check ground truth, test coverage, hidden shortcuts, and judge agreement.
- Publish the score with exposure risks, exclusions, budgets, and limitations attached.
This protocol reduces common leakage routes while keeping the result interpretable. It does not certify that a model has never encountered related information.
What current evidence can and cannot establish
Published case studies show why evaluation integrity is an ongoing adversarial problem. Anthropic writes, “We expect these dynamics to intensify, and we encourage the research community to treat eval integrity as an ongoing adversarial problem rather than a design-time concern,” in its BrowseComp report. OpenAI’s Model Spec Evals release describes 596 prompts across 225 focus areas and characterizes the collection as a broad, low-resolution view focused on everyday simple text interactions rather than adversarial or trick prompts; see Introducing Model Spec Evals. These figures describe particular releases, not universal contamination or leakage rates.
There is no generally applicable percentage that tells you how much of any benchmark a model has seen, and no universal leakage-prevention rate established by these sources. The defensible conclusion is narrower: design controls to reduce exposure, probes to detect particular forms of exposure, validity checks to catch other score distortions, and reporting that lets readers decide how far the evidence travels.
Bottom line for evaluation teams
Design the claim first, then build a task set whose exposure risk, tools, scoring, and effort budget match that claim. Prefer fresh or private work, probe for task-specific reproduction through varied and adaptive prompts, audit every information route, validate both tasks and judges, and disclose compromised samples and limitations. A credible evaluation is not one that promises perfect secrecy; it is one that makes leakage and other validity threats visible enough for readers to interpret the score correctly.
