You can design a custom retention strap for a Steam Frame controller by combining Valve’s current controller CAD with measurements from your own hardware, then validating a low-risk prototype before relying on it. Start with Valve’s live Steam Frame CAD release and identify the controller files; do not assume that a model, screenshot, or community design reveals the correct attachment dimensions.

This article uses “wrist strap” to mean a controller hand-retention strap. It is not the headset’s top strap. Valve’s official Steam Frame product page lists an Ergonomic Accessories Kit with two controller hand straps, one headset top strap, and one extended light blocker. Valve’s Steam Hardware announcement, dated October 9, 2026, states: “Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are now available for non-commercial use.”

What the CAD release does—and does not—tell you

Valve’s release gives makers a legitimate starting point for designing around Steam Frame hardware, but it does not make every printed part automatically compatible or durable. The controller CAD is a reference model. Your finished strap still has to fit the physical controller, clear every control and sensor, and survive the way you intend to use it.

A community discussion reports that the release repository contains controller CAD and a simplified headstrap model. Treat that discussion as a pointer to what may be present in the repository, not as authoritative documentation of filenames, dimensions, revisions, tolerances, or strap interfaces. Open the live release yourself and record the exact file revision you use.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Valve’s accessory listing also prevents a common terminology mistake. The controller hand straps and the headset top strap are separate accessories. A design that clips to the headset cannot be assumed to fit a controller, and a controller retention strap should not be routed through headset hardware simply because the parts look similar.

Gather the right reference material before modeling

Use the current official release

  1. Open Valve’s current Steam Hardware announcement and follow its instructions to the live Steam Frame CAD release.
  2. Download the controller-specific files rather than selecting a headset-only model. If the release contains several controller files, inspect names, revision notes, and metadata instead of guessing from a thumbnail.
  3. Record the download date, release or commit identifier, units, and file formats in a small project note. A later hardware revision may alter an interface without changing your printed part’s name.
  4. Keep an untouched copy of the original files. Perform measurements and construction work in a duplicate or in a separate CAD project.

Do not publish a precise repository path, filename, or dimension unless you have checked it in the live release. The available public discussion does not establish those details.

Inspect the physical controller as well

CAD can omit cosmetic variation, flexible parts, fastener heads, seams, or manufacturing tolerances. Examine the actual left and right controllers you will use. Look for existing strap slots, bosses, screw heads, split lines, buttons, triggers, thumb controls, vents, tracking hardware, charging contacts, and areas where your fingers naturally rest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photograph the attachment area before covering it with masking tape or a removable marker. Note whether both controllers are mirror images, whether the proposed strap is handed, and whether a case, grip, or other accessory changes the available clearance. Measurements you take yourself are your measurements; do not describe them as Valve specifications.

Choose an attachment and strap arrangement

There is no tested “best” architecture established by the available sources. Select an arrangement by balancing retention, comfort, adjustability, replaceability, and the consequences of a printed part breaking.

Approach Why you might choose it Risks and checks
Reuse a verified existing interface Uses an attachment feature already present on the controller and can keep the printed part small. Confirm the feature’s actual shape and load direction on the current controller. Do not infer its strength or intended load from the rendered CAD alone.
Replacement clip or bracket Useful when the controller has no convenient strap route or when you need a different angle. A clip can pry against a shell, obstruct controls, or release under a sideways load. Prototype the complete contact surface, not only the clip outline.
Printed anchor with separate webbing Lets you replace the flexible strap without reprinting the rigid anchor and makes adjustment hardware easier to source. Secure the webbing against pull-through and abrasion. The printed anchor and the textile connection must be checked as one system.
Fixed loop Simple and compact for one user and one hand position. Limited adjustment can create pressure or let the controller move independently of the hand. Leave enough clearance to remove the hand quickly.
Adjustable loop Accommodates different hand sizes, gloves, and preferred tension. Buckles, sliders, or hook-and-loop closures can rub the hand or collide with controls. Check that adjustment hardware cannot reach a trigger or tracking sensor.

A community post showing a DIY headset top strap uses 3D-printed clips with separate webbing. That is useful inspiration for the idea of separating a rigid printed interface from flexible strap material, but it does not validate a controller wrist-strap design, its strength, its fit, or its print settings.

Map attachment surfaces and keep-out zones

Create a measurement record

In your CAD program, establish a coordinate system and save a version of the unmodified controller model. Measure only what you need to define the interface: contact widths, edge radii, screw or slot locations, insertion direction, and the distance to nearby controls. On the physical controller, check those same features with calipers or a simple gauge and record any mismatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compensate for an unknown tolerance by making an arbitrary tight fit. Instead, design a replaceable test piece that reveals where contact occurs. A removable shim, open-sided gauge, or thin interference-check ring can answer a fit question without committing to a full strap anchor.

Mark the areas the strap must not touch

  • Trigger travel and the space your index finger occupies while operating it.
  • Thumbstick or touch-control movement, including the path of a thumb at an angle.
  • Buttons, vents, charging contacts, and any access panel you need during normal use.
  • Optical, tracking, or sensing surfaces that must remain unobstructed.
  • Shell seams and edges that could become pressure points when the strap is tightened.
  • Any gap where a clip could slide into the housing or trap a finger.

Use a transparent clearance body in CAD to represent fingers and moving controls. Then rotate the controller through the positions you actually use instead of checking only one front view. If you cannot establish a keep-out area from the current model and hardware, leave more space and validate with a physical prototype.

Build a simple, adjustable design in CAD

  1. Model the interface first. Recreate only the surfaces that touch the controller. Avoid copying decorative shell geometry into the strap part; unnecessary surface detail makes revisions harder.
  2. Separate the load path. Draw the force from the hand, through the webbing or loop, into the printed anchor, and into the controller contact. Add material where the force turns a corner, and avoid thin tabs that are loaded across their layer lines.
  3. Add generous transitions. Fillets and rounded inside corners reduce stress concentrations. Keep edges that touch the hand smooth and remove knife-like corners from clips.
  4. Make the flexible part replaceable. A slot, bar, or captured channel can allow webbing to be replaced without reprinting. Check that the webbing cannot pull through the opening at the angle created by your hand.
  5. Provide adjustment away from controls. Place a buckle, slider, or closure where it will not strike a trigger, thumb control, sensor, or the user’s palm. If the design is handed, label left and right parts in the CAD and on the printed files.
  6. Use an assembly clearance check. Subtract the controller keep-out volume from the strap anchor and inspect the result in section view. Confirm that the part can be installed and removed in a realistic direction.
  7. Export a test geometry. Before exporting the complete anchor, make a thin gauge or partial ring containing only the critical interface. This is faster and safer to iterate.

Keep the design parametric where possible. Name dimensions by purpose—such as contact width, webbing clearance, or finger clearance—rather than scattering unexplained values through sketches. If Valve changes the controller model, you can update the interface without rebuilding the entire strap.

Prototype before printing a finished strap

Start with a fit gauge

Print the smallest part that answers the most important question: does the proposed interface sit where you think it does? A thin gauge can expose a wrong radius, an obstructed button, or an impossible insertion direction. Test it on both controllers if the design is intended to be mirrored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not apply full strap tension to a gauge that was not designed for it. Its purpose is positional checking, not retention testing.

Print a low-cost functional prototype

Once the interface is confirmed, print a complete anchor with inexpensive material and a conservative orientation. Attach a separate piece of webbing or other flexible strap material rather than committing to a final textile length immediately. Mark the adjustment range so you can see where the loop sits on your hand.

Handle the prototype through installation and removal several times. Look for whitening, cracking, layer separation, permanent bending, sharp edges, and contact marks on the controller. A part that fits when stationary may shift when the hand rotates or when the strap is loosened.

General material and print-setting choices

Valve has not specified an approved filament, resin, infill, orientation, or slicer profile for a custom controller strap in the information available here. The choices below are general maker starting points only. Validate them on your printer, material batch, and design.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Material family Useful characteristics Things to verify
PLA or PLA blends Easy to print and dimensionally predictable for fit gauges and early prototypes. Heat exposure, brittleness, and layer adhesion may make it unsuitable for a repeatedly flexed anchor.
PETG Usually tougher and less brittle than basic PLA, with accessible printing requirements. Stringing, surface friction, and dimensional changes around small clips or slots.
Nylon or other engineering polymers Can provide good toughness when printed and dried correctly. Moisture control, enclosure and temperature requirements, shrinkage, and your printer’s ability to produce consistent layers.
TPU or another flexible filament Useful for pads, grip surfaces, or compliant sections. It may stretch, creep, or be difficult to print accurately as the sole load-bearing anchor.

For an FDM prototype, a conservative starting profile might use a fine enough layer height to reproduce the interface, several perimeter walls, solid top and bottom regions, and moderate-to-high infill around the anchor. Orient the part so the primary strap load does not try to peel layers apart. These are starting choices, not performance guarantees; print a small coupon in the same orientation and inspect it before trusting the part.

Resin prints can reproduce detail, but a brittle resin may be a poor choice for a part that is repeatedly flexed or dropped. If you use resin, select a formulation intended for toughness, follow its cure process, and test the finished material rather than assuming that a sharp, detailed print is strong.

Fit, comfort, and interference checks

Carry out these checks with the controller powered off first, then repeat the relevant checks during normal operation. Stop if the strap obstructs a control, blocks tracking, traps a finger, or causes the controller to sit in an unfamiliar position.

  • Installation: The part should seat fully without forcing the shell, scraping a seam, or requiring a tool that could damage the controller.
  • Retention: With the controller held over a soft surface, apply gradually increasing hand tension and observe the anchor, webbing, and controller contact separately. Do not treat this as a certified strength test.
  • Control access: Operate triggers, buttons, thumb controls, and any touch-sensitive surface through their full travel with the strap both loose and adjusted.
  • Tracking and sensing: Inspect every sensor or optical area from the angles you use. A strap that is clear in a front view can still cross a sensor when the controller rotates.
  • Comfort: Wear the loop for a short session and check pressure, rubbing, heat, and whether the closure lands under your palm. Do not tighten it enough to restrict circulation.
  • Emergency release: Practice opening or slipping out of the strap with one hand. A retention accessory should not make it difficult to put the controller down quickly.
  • Repeated handling: Install and remove the prototype repeatedly, then inspect for cracks, deformation, loose webbing, and polished or gouged contact surfaces.

These checks are recommendations for your validation process, not evidence that any particular design has passed testing. A rendered model and a community photograph cannot establish safe load capacity.

Troubleshoot common prototype failures

Symptom Likely design issue Revision to try
Anchor rocks or twists Too little contact area or a load path that is not aligned with the controller surface. Increase the supported contact region, add a locating feature, or change the webbing direction; recheck removal clearance.
Clip releases during hand movement Side loading, insufficient capture, or a flexible section bending open. Capture the interface on more than one side, add a stop, and test the release direction separately from the strap pull direction.
Trigger or thumb control rubs Keep-out envelope was checked in only one pose. Model the moving control and finger volume, then move the strap route outward or change its angle.
Webbing pulls through Slot geometry, edge radius, or fold path does not distribute the load. Use a wider bearing surface, a captured bar, or a different webbing fold. Inspect the textile for cutting or fraying.
Part cracks at a corner Sharp internal corner, thin section, brittle material, or unfavorable print orientation. Add a fillet and material, reorient the layers, or switch to a tougher validated material.
Part fits one controller but not the other Handed geometry, manufacturing variation, or an incorrect mirror operation. Measure both units, keep separate left/right references, and avoid assuming perfect symmetry.

Iterate and document the design

Change one major variable at a time: interface shape, strap route, adjustment hardware, material, or print orientation. Keep the failed versions instead of overwriting them, and record what physical symptom caused each revision. This makes it easier to tell whether a fit improvement introduced a comfort or control problem.

When you share files, include:

  • The Steam Frame controller model revision or release identifier and the date you downloaded it.
  • Which controller side the part fits and whether a mirrored file is required.
  • The filament or resin family, printer type, nozzle or cure details, layer height, walls, infill, supports, and orientation actually used.
  • The webbing width and closure hardware, if those are part of the assembly.
  • Installation and removal directions, known interference limits, and the checks you performed.
  • A clear statement that users must validate their own controller, materials, and prints.

Do not publish a strength rating, safety claim, or universal compatibility statement unless you have a documented test method and a defined hardware revision. A useful maker release tells others exactly what was tried and where uncertainty remains.

License and commercial-use considerations

Valve’s official Steam Hardware announcement says that Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are available for non-commercial use and directs commercial users to follow its instructions and contact Valve. That is not the same as blanket permission to sell printed straps, kits, or modified CAD. Read the current announcement and its accompanying instructions before distributing a design commercially.

For a personal project, retain the original attribution and license information included with the current release. If you publish modifications, identify which files you changed and avoid implying that Valve tested, endorsed, or warrants your strap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical finish line

Your design is ready for regular use only after the current controller CAD and the physical controller agree at the attachment area, a prototype clears controls and sensing surfaces, the strap can be adjusted and released comfortably, and repeated handling shows no visible damage. The model is a starting reference; the fit and behavior of the assembled part are what you must validate.
