A ticket-availability monitor should record typed observations and how they change over time, rather than scrape a page and turn whatever it sees into a yes-or-no alert. Ticketmaster’s API documentation illustrates why: statuses can be available, limited, unavailable, or unknown; some partner availability data may be cached; and coverage, authorization, polling, and quotas all affect what a monitor can responsibly report. This state-machine approach is an engineering recommendation—not a design rule mandated by Ticketmaster—and the documented details below apply to Ticketmaster products, not every ticketing platform.
Why a ticket monitor needs states
A scraper typically extracts what a page happens to render. That can be useful for a quick check, but it does not by itself explain whether the result is current, which ticket source or market it covers, or whether a failure means tickets are gone. A monitor needs to represent those distinctions explicitly.

Ticketmaster’s Inventory Status API defines four primary status values: TICKETS_AVAILABLE, FEW_TICKETS_LEFT, TICKETS_NOT_AVAILABLE, and UNKNOWN. The last value can mean the source or market is unsupported, status data cannot be retrieved at that time, or the event ID is invalid. A practical monitor can keep those vendor statuses intact while adding its own operational states, such as stale or overdue. That way an alert can distinguish “the last response said tickets were available” from “the monitor has not obtained a recent response.”

What an observation should contain
A status without context is hard to interpret or compare. Store each result as an observation with enough information to tell what it refers to and how reliable its timing is.
- Event identity: retain the event ID returned or used in the request.
- Ticketing source and region: identify the market being checked rather than implying global coverage.
- Vendor status and details: preserve the supplied status and any detail associated with an UNKNOWN response instead of reducing it to a Boolean.
- Observation time: record when the response was received, and show readers when the last observation occurred.
- Response context: retain relevant request, polling, quota, or failure information so system problems are not mistaken for inventory changes.
Ticketmaster lists supported sources and regions for its Inventory Status API and directs clients making batched requests to use a single source/region combination per batch; mixing combinations can lead to incorrect statuses. How to define useful transitions and alerts
A state machine is a set of defined states and rules for moving between them. For a monitor, the rules should specify which transitions change what readers see and which ones warrant a notification.
- Accept a response as an observation, not as a promise. Store the returned status with its event, source, region, and observation time.
- Separate inventory transitions from monitoring failures. A change from available to unavailable is different from an UNKNOWN response, a missed poll, a quota response, or an overdue observation.
- Notify on meaningful, actionable changes. For example, alert when a supported source reports an available or limited status after a previous unavailable status. Define rules for other transitions rather than sending duplicate alerts for every unchanged response.
- Show uncertainty and age. Make clear when the status is unknown or the last observation is stale, instead of presenting an old result as current.
The specific alert policy is a design choice, not a formal Ticketmaster requirement. The important point is that an alert should reflect a documented observation and its age, not claim more than the response establishes.

Why an availability alert cannot guarantee tickets remain available
An availability response is not a purchase promise. Ticketmaster warns that data from its Partner Availability API may be cached for extended periods and should not be used in real time during an active purchase. Even an apparently current status can change before someone reaches checkout. The alert should communicate what was observed and when, not guarantee that the inventory can still be purchased. Ticketmaster’s Inventory Status API describes near-real-time inventory updates, but its UNKNOWN cases, coverage boundaries, and separate limits on price data still matter. Its documented price ranges apply only to listed supported markets, represent face value excluding fees, and refresh at a maximum frequency of once per hour. The API also documents a cap behavior when maximum-price values exceed 2000.00 in local currency; that is a product-specific response detail, not a general ticket-price limit. Authorization, quotas, and asynchronous work
Use only access your integration is allowed to use
Ticketmaster says access to its Inventory Status API is provided to authorized clients only and requires API keys. Its Partner API is restricted to companies with official distribution relationships. Those boundaries are specific to Ticketmaster’s products; a monitor should use documented, authorized access rather than trying to scrape around authorization or rate limits. Represent quota and maintenance conditions as system states
Ticketmaster’s Partner Availability API documentation specifies a quota of 3,600 availability requests per hour per API key and says a 429 response indicates a quota violation. It also documents local-system maintenance periods between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. local time for its backend reservation systems. These are vendor-specific operational details, not industry-wide limits. Honor server-specified polling waits
For supported Partner API operations, Ticketmaster describes responses that can return HTTP 202 with a polling URL and a wait duration when work takes longer or queues apply. The client should wait as instructed; another polling response may follow. That workflow is evidence that asynchronous state handling is needed in real integrations, but it does not mean an ordinary monitor has access to these partner endpoints. When this model is useful—and where the evidence stops
The state-machine framing is most useful when a monitor must distinguish inventory from uncertainty, handle stale observations, and explain why an alert was sent. It also gives engineers a place to track source and market coverage, authorization, polling, and failures without misreporting them as ticket status.
Ticketmaster’s APIs make these design pressures concrete, but their status vocabulary, access rules, quotas, caching behavior, and coverage should not be assumed to apply to another ticketing platform. Check the relevant platform’s documentation before adopting a particular state model or polling policy.
