How to Design a PT-Symmetric Photonic System with Gain and Loss

Design a PT-symmetric photonic system by pairing parity-related optical regions whose real refractive-index profile is even and whose gain/loss profile is odd, then tuning inter-mode coupling against the balanced gain and loss. A coupled-waveguide pair gives the simplest model, but its exceptional-point threshold is not a universal design rule: the architecture, modes, wavelength, materials, and target behavior determine the device.

The practical question is not only whether a gain/loss pattern satisfies a symmetry equation. A designer must also decide what the system should do, identify the modes that participate, estimate their coupling and propagation constants, and check whether the physical structure supports the behavior predicted by an effective model. The ideal two-mode threshold is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that a fabricated device will behave identically.

What PT symmetry requires in an optical system

For a scalar refractive-index profile along a coordinate x, write the complex index as n(x) = nR(x) + inI(x). Parity-time (PT) symmetry requires:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • nR(x) = nR(−x): the real part, which describes the ordinary index profile, is even under reflection.
  • nI(x) = −nI(−x): the imaginary part is odd under reflection, so parity-related regions have opposite gain and loss.

In a two-channel implementation, the parity operation can exchange the channels. Their real optical structure should match under that exchange, while one channel supplies gain and the other loss in a balanced arrangement. The balance is a symmetry condition on the modeled system, not a guarantee that two fabricated channels will have identical modes or behave exactly like an ideal mathematical pair. The condition and coupled-waveguide model are described in the National Science Review article “Parity–time symmetric photonics” (2018).

In practical terms, start by identifying the reflection plane or channel exchange that defines parity. Then compare the parts of the structure mapped into one another. The real-index profile must be unchanged by that mapping, while the imaginary part must reverse sign. This is more precise than saying only that one side has gain and the other has loss: the modeled spatial pattern and the parity operation must match.

The scalar index equations are a compact statement of the design condition. For a channel pair, they become a guide for checking whether the two sides have corresponding real optical structure and opposite gain/loss contributions. If the proposed device has dissimilar channels or several interacting modes, write down the parity operation and modal system explicitly. Do not assume that channel labels alone establish PT symmetry.

Start with the coupled-mode model

A useful first model for two coupled modes is the effective matrix

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

H = [[β₀ + iγ, κ], [κ*, β₀ − iγ]]

Here, β₀ is the shared real propagation constant, κ is the coupling between channels, and γ represents balanced gain and loss under the chosen sign convention. If the coupling is real and symmetric, the eigenvalues are

β₀ ± √(|κ|² − γ²)

In this idealized model, the eigenvalues are real when |γ| < |κ|. At |γ| = |κ|, the two eigenvalues and their eigenmodes coalesce at an exceptional point (EP). For |γ| > |κ|, the eigenvalue pair is complex. The EP is therefore not just a point where two plotted values cross: it is a degeneracy involving both eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

The formula expresses a competition: coupling links the two modes, while the gain/loss term makes their effective propagation constants differ in the imaginary direction. Below the ideal threshold, the square-root term is real; at the threshold it vanishes; above it, the pair becomes complex. This describes the eigenvalues of this particular effective matrix. It should not be read as a universal recipe for choosing a gain coefficient or a waveguide gap.

These equations describe an effective two-mode system, not a fabrication prescription. The propagation equation’s sign convention can change which sign denotes gain, so state that convention when deriving or implementing the matrix. If the modes have unequal propagation constants, the channels are not truly balanced, or additional modes contribute, the simple expression and threshold may no longer apply. Multimode and dissimilar systems can exhibit other loss-compensation behavior, as discussed in the Physical Review A study “Multimode parity-time symmetry and loss compensation in coupled waveguides with loss and gain” (2021).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this reason, use the matrix to make assumptions visible. It assumes a shared real propagation constant, a selected two-mode basis, and gain/loss represented by equal and opposite imaginary terms. If a model derived from the chosen structure does not support those assumptions, use its actual parameters and dimensionality instead of adjusting the physical device to fit the simple formula.

Choose the architecture and the intended behavior

Before choosing dimensions or gain materials, decide what physical system you are designing and what it should do. Published examples span coupled dielectric waveguides, multimode waveguides, photonic-crystal defect waveguides, and periodic coupled-waveguide arrangements. The literature does not establish one architecture as universally best.

Multimode coupled waveguides More than two modes and nonideal or dissimilar channels can change the loss-compensation behavior. Physical Review A (2021). Which modes are included, their propagation constants and coupling, and which modes or thresholds matter to the intended function.
Photonic-crystal defect waveguides Chip-scale structures using absorption and amplification have been studied; PT symmetry can be used in waveguide-dispersion engineering. Journal of the Optical Society of America B (2019). Crystal and defect geometry, modal behavior, wavelength, and the gain/loss implementation consistent with the target dispersion behavior.
Periodic coupled waveguides Alternating gain/loss segments and periodicity can produce multiple phase bands and branches of exceptional points. Optica (2026). Period, segment sequence, relevant bands, and how the periodic structure changes the locations of the exceptional points.

For any of these architectures, write down the target before optimizing the structure. The aim might be to remain in the unbroken phase, pass through an EP in a controlled way, compensate loss, select modes, or engineer dispersion. These are different design goals; a configuration useful for one is not automatically suitable for another. Reviews in Nature Materials (2019) and Nature Physics (2018) place these devices in the broader experimental and theoretical context.

A useful comparison should therefore be made against the intended function, not against a generic ranking of platforms. A two-waveguide pair is directly suited to illustrating the compact balanced model, but that does not establish it as the best choice for every application. A multimode system may require tracking several relevant modes and loss-compensation thresholds. A photonic-crystal defect structure brings a crystal and defect geometry into the modal problem, while a periodic coupled-waveguide arrangement requires attention to its sequence, bands, and EP branches.

At the selection stage, record the geometry and expected mode count; how gain and loss will be introduced and balanced; the likely coupling and modal overlap; the behavior sought; and the fabrication and operating constraints tied to the chosen platform. These axes keep unlike systems comparable without implying that one implementation has a universal advantage.

Design the modal system, not just the gain/loss pattern

Once the architecture and goal are specified, identify the parity operation and the modes that form the basis of the model. For a channel-exchange design, state which physical reflection or exchange maps one channel to the other. Check that the background real-index structure respects this operation and that the imaginary-index profile reverses sign under it.

Then estimate or simulate each selected mode’s propagation constant, the coupling between modes, and the gain or loss assigned to them. Use these quantities to form the effective matrix. The equal-diagonal, two-mode matrix is appropriate only if its assumptions are defensible for the structure being designed. If there are additional modes or dissimilar channels, expand the modal model rather than forcing the system into the ideal dimer formula.

Make the modal basis explicit before interpreting a calculated threshold. A mode is not just a channel name: the propagation constant and coupling in the model refer to selected modes of the physical structure. In a multimode waveguide, deciding which modes to retain is part of the modeling task. If more than two modes are relevant, a two-by-two matrix may omit interactions that affect the behavior being evaluated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, do not treat gain and loss as labels detached from the mode system. The model represents their effects through the relevant terms for the selected modes. The parity relation sets the intended balance, while the effective parameters describe how the modes interact. When the structure is dissimilar or nonideal, use the resulting model to determine whether the balance condition and the simple threshold still describe the device.

Comparisons between candidate designs should therefore track the quantities that shape the modal problem:

  • Geometry and number of modes included.
  • How gain and loss are introduced and how closely their strengths satisfy the intended balance.
  • Coupling strength and modal overlap.
  • The intended outcome, such as an EP transition, loss compensation, or dispersion control.
  • Fabrication and operating constraints relevant to the selected materials and platform.

These criteria also help separate symmetry from performance. Matching the real-index profile and reversing the gain/loss profile under parity defines the target symmetry. Whether the device reaches a particular EP or performs a desired loss-compensation or dispersion function depends on the modes and parameters of the actual system.

Sweep gain/loss and identify the exceptional point

With an effective model in hand, vary the non-Hermitian parameter—typically the gain/loss magnitude relative to the coupling—and calculate both eigenvalues and eigenvectors. For the ideal balanced two-mode model, the transition occurs at |γ| = |κ|. In a physical system, determine the transition from the system’s own model rather than treating that equality as a universal device threshold.

  1. Set the model parameters. Use propagation constants, coupling, gain, and loss appropriate to the chosen modes and operating conditions.
  2. Vary the gain/loss parameter. Sweep it over a range that includes the expected transition in the effective model.
  3. Track eigenvalues and eigenvectors together. An EP requires coalescence of both; a crossing or near-crossing of eigenvalue curves alone does not establish one.
  4. Check the system’s phase structure. In periodic waveguides, inspect the relevant bands and possible EP branches rather than assuming a single threshold. The Optica study (2026) specifically addresses multiple phase bands and EP branches in periodic PT-symmetric coupled waveguides.
  5. Relate the result to the goal. Decide whether the design should operate below the transition, reach it, or use behavior in another regime; do not assume that crossing an EP is inherently desirable.

The eigenvector check matters because an ordinary eigenvalue crossing and an exceptional point are not the same diagnosis. To identify an EP in the model, examine whether the modes themselves coalesce along with the eigenvalues. This prevents a plot that appears to show two branches meeting from being treated as sufficient evidence on its own.

For a simple dimer, the square-root expression gives a clear reference point for the sweep. For a periodic coupled-waveguide design, the phase structure may include multiple bands and more than one branch of EPs. The Optica (2026) study addresses precisely this setting, so a designer of a periodic system should inspect the relevant bands and branches rather than collapse its behavior into one scalar threshold.

In a multimode or asymmetric system, the sweep is still a useful method, but the relevant parameter range and transition must come from that system’s own model. The Physical Review A (2021) study establishes that multimode parity-time symmetry and loss compensation in coupled waveguides can involve behavior beyond the simplest dimer. Do not label every loss-compensation EP as the ideal balanced two-mode threshold.

Validate the model against the intended device

The two-mode calculation is a way to frame and interpret a design. Before relying on it for a physical device, validate it against the selected structure and operating conditions. Include geometry, wavelength, material dispersion, gain saturation, fabrication variation, and boundary conditions as appropriate to the platform. The available literature establishes design concepts and examples, but it does not supply a single geometry, wavelength, material set, or tolerance that can be transferred to every PT-symmetric photonic system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validation begins by comparing the assumptions of the effective model with the intended physical structure. Does the device support the modes used in the calculation? Are their propagation constants and coupling represented for the relevant operating conditions? Does the assumed gain/loss assignment correspond to how the physical design introduces amplification and absorption? If the answer changes with geometry, wavelength, material dispersion, gain saturation, fabrication variation, or boundary conditions, those effects belong in the platform-specific assessment.

This step is where an ideal symmetry target meets a real device. The symmetry equations specify the intended relation between parity-related regions, but they do not provide a universal tolerance for fabrication or guarantee exact modal equality. The model should be checked against the physical structure rather than treated as proof that the manufactured system will reproduce its idealized eigenvalues.

A practical design sequence is:

  1. Define the application and platform. Choose the architecture and state the intended behavior before selecting a specific gain/loss implementation.
  2. Specify parity and the modal basis. Identify the reflection or channel exchange and the modes used to represent the device.
  3. Build an effective model. Estimate or simulate propagation constants, coupling, gain, and loss; use a multimode description if the physical structure requires one.
  4. Locate transitions in the model. Sweep the relevant non-Hermitian parameters and track eigenvalues and eigenvectors to identify EPs and other loss-compensation behavior.
  5. Test the physical structure. Account for platform-specific geometry, dispersion, gain saturation, fabrication variation, and boundaries, then compare the device behavior with the effective prediction.

Keep the result of each step tied to the design goal. If the target is operation in the unbroken phase, the useful result is not merely the location of an EP but whether the system’s modeled operating point stays in the intended regime. If the objective is a controlled passage through an EP, verify the coalescence in the relevant model. If the application instead involves loss compensation or dispersion control, assess those behaviors directly rather than treating an EP as an end in itself.

What cannot be specified without a particular platform

There is no responsible universal set of waveguide dimensions, gain coefficient, loss coefficient, wavelength, or fabrication tolerance for this title alone. Each depends on the architecture, materials, modal profiles, operating conditions, and chosen objective. Likewise, the ideal two-mode threshold is a model result: asymmetric gain/loss and dissimilar modes can support other loss-compensation exceptional points, while periodicity can change EP locations and branches. The design becomes numerically actionable only after those system-specific choices are defined.

For the same reason, the design guide cannot responsibly nominate a gain medium, waveguide component, or repair tool without a specified wavelength, platform, geometry, and experimental objective. A specific component or numerical prescription would require those details to establish compatibility. The concept-level design process can identify what must be measured or modeled, but it cannot substitute for a platform-specific specification.

Nature Materials’ 2019 review describes its scope as explaining the underlying physical principles and discussing progress in experimental investigation of PT-symmetric photonic systems. For a designer, the central practical lesson is to use the symmetry condition to define the target, the coupled-mode matrix to organize the initial analysis, and a platform-specific modal model to determine what the fabricated system can actually do.

Frequently asked questions

What is the PT-symmetry condition for an optical index profile?

For a scalar profile n(x) = nR(x) + inI(x), the real part must be even, nR(x) = nR(−x), and the imaginary part must be odd, nI(x) = −nI(−x). Thus parity-related regions have matching real optical structure and opposite gain/loss.

At what point does the ideal two-waveguide model reach an exceptional point?

For the ideal balanced two-mode model with real symmetric coupling, the eigenvalues are β₀ ± √(|κ|²−γ²). They coalesce when |γ| = |κ|. That equality is specific to the model; unequal modes, extra channels, or nonideal gain/loss can change the relevant threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell an exceptional point from an ordinary crossing?

Check eigenvectors as well as eigenvalues. At an EP, both the eigenvalues and eigenmodes coalesce. A crossing or near-crossing in an eigenvalue plot alone does not establish an exceptional point.

Is a coupled two-waveguide pair always the best architecture?

No. It is a compact way to realize and study the balanced two-mode picture, but published work also includes multimode waveguides, photonic-crystal defect waveguides, and periodic coupled-waveguide systems. The appropriate choice depends on the target behavior and platform-specific constraints.

Can the ideal threshold be used for a multimode or asymmetric device?

Not without checking the system’s own model. Additional modes, dissimilar channels, or asymmetric gain/loss can change the loss-compensation behavior and produce exceptional points beyond the simple balanced-dimer threshold.

What information is needed before choosing dimensions or materials?

At minimum, define the architecture, wavelength, materials and gain/loss implementation, relevant modes, coupling, operating conditions, and target behavior. Those choices determine which modal model and physical validation are appropriate; there is no single set of dimensions or tolerances that applies to all PT-symmetric photonic systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changes in periodic coupled-waveguide designs?

Periodicity can alter the locations of exceptional points and create multiple phase bands and EP branches. A periodic design therefore needs band- and branch-specific analysis, rather than reliance on the single threshold from the ideal two-mode pair.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PT-symmetry condition for an optical index profile?

For a scalar profile n(x) = nR(x) + inI(x), the real part must be even and the imaginary part odd: nR(x) = nR(−x) and nI(x) = −nI(−x).

At what point does the ideal two-waveguide model reach an exceptional point?

For the ideal balanced two-mode model with real symmetric coupling, the eigenvalues coalesce at |γ| = |κ|. This is not a universal threshold for other devices.

How can I tell an exceptional point from an ordinary crossing?

Track eigenvectors as well as eigenvalues. At an exceptional point, both coalesce; an eigenvalue crossing alone is not enough.

Is a coupled two-waveguide pair always the best architecture?

No. It is a compact realization of the balanced two-mode picture, but multimode waveguides, photonic-crystal defect waveguides, and periodic coupled-waveguide systems are also studied. The target and platform determine the choice.

Can I use the ideal threshold for a multimode or asymmetric device?

Not without checking that device’s model. Additional modes, dissimilar channels, or asymmetric gain/loss can change loss-compensation behavior and the relevant exceptional points.

What do I need to know before choosing dimensions or materials?

Specify the architecture, wavelength, materials and gain/loss implementation, relevant modes, coupling, operating conditions, and target behavior. There is no universal set of dimensions or tolerances.

What changes in periodic coupled-waveguide designs?

Periodicity can change exceptional-point locations and produce multiple phase bands and EP branches, so analyze the relevant bands and branches rather than assuming one threshold.

The Bottom Line

Start with the even-real and odd-imaginary index conditions, choose an architecture and target behavior, and build a modal model that matches the modes actually present. The ideal balanced two-mode threshold is useful for orientation, but only platform-specific modeling and validation can establish the behavior of a real PT-symmetric photonic device.
