To run an AI model on a satellite, design the inference task, model, processor, power budget, and recovery plan together. Start with a narrow onboard decision—such as detecting clouds or floods in an image—then measure the complete processing pipeline on representative hardware. There is no universal wattage, model-size limit, or best processor for every satellite.

What onboard AI can—and cannot—do

Onboard inference processes data close to where a satellite collects it. Instead of immediately downlinking every raw image, the spacecraft may identify useful scenes, prioritize data, compress imagery, or produce a smaller result for transmission. NASA describes edge processing for near-real-time payload processing and spacecraft autonomy in its Small Spacecraft Avionics guidance.

That does not make communications unnecessary: results, selected data, and operational information still need to reach the ground. The benefit is that the satellite can decide what to retain or send when downlink capacity is limited.

NASA’s May 2026 report on Prithvi describes a compressed geospatial foundation model uploaded to the Kanyini satellite and the IMAGIN-e payload on the International Space Station. NASA says the model was tested for flood and cloud detection in those different computing environments. The report also says Prithvi was trained on data spanning 13 years. This is evidence that a geospatial foundation model can be demonstrated in orbit—not proof that the same model, performance, or hardware fits another mission.

Define the onboard decision before choosing a model

Write down what the spacecraft must decide and what happens next. “Run AI on images” is too broad to set useful engineering limits. A more actionable requirement might be: “Process each acquired image, flag likely flood scenes, and store flagged scenes for priority downlink.” The mission team must define the actual output, acceptable errors, and resulting action.

  • Input: Identify the sensor data, image dimensions, bands, formats, and any calibration or preprocessing needed.
  • Output: Specify whether the model returns a classification, detection, segmentation mask, ranking, or compressed product.
  • Timing: Set the required latency, processing schedule, duty cycle, and whether inference can wait until power is available.
  • Consequence: Decide whether an output changes spacecraft behavior, affects data priority, or is only a candidate for later ground review.
  • Quality: Establish acceptable false-positive and false-negative rates using mission-relevant data; a generic model score is not a substitute.

NASA’s cited examples include image analysis, payload processing, spacecraft autonomy, and image compression. For Earth observation, event detection can help prioritize which products to transmit, but the mission must decide how much evidence is needed before acting on a detection.

Set spacecraft budgets before selecting compute

Get the actual limits from the spacecraft design and operations teams before settling on a model or processor. The cited NASA and ESA material does not establish a universal power or model-size ceiling; available resources vary with the spacecraft, payload, orbit, and operating plan.

Distinguish peak power from energy per inference and average power across a duty cycle. A design that can execute a single inference may still exceed thermal or energy limits if it must process a continuous stream.

Choose an architecture that fits the mission

Compare candidate designs against the same workload and spacecraft constraints. Options can include CPU-only processing, an accelerator integrated with a payload processor, or a separate coprocessor. A separate device may isolate payload compute, but adds integration and interface work; an integrated design may simplify some handoffs, but has to meet the mission’s processing and resilience requirements.

Architecture example What the cited source establishes What the mission still needs to establish
SC-LEARN Edge TPU coprocessor NASA’s 2021 SC-LEARN publication describes a CubeSat-sized Edge TPU coprocessor and high-performance, fault-tolerant, and power-saving modes. Performance, energy, supported model operations, interfaces, and suitability for the target spacecraft and mission.
Myriad 2 / CogniSAT-XE1 ESA’s June 2023 report describes Myriad 2 radiation testing and a CubeSat mission path for the CogniSAT-XE1 payload. Whether that hardware and integration approach meets the mission’s current requirements and qualification needs.
ASCEND Sterna / Morus architecture ESA’s project page describes a radiation-tolerant supervisor separated from a Jetson-based processing domain, with recovery features. It states Sterna delivers at least 100 TOPS (INT8) and Morus at least 250 TOPS in the page’s stated configuration. Current project and qualification status, mission-specific power and thermal behavior, and comparable performance on the intended workload.

These are examples of different approaches, not results from a controlled comparison. The TOPS figures are ESA project-page claims for the stated configurations, not a common benchmark against the other options. The cited sources do not rank processors by accuracy per watt for the same model and workload.

Adapt the model, then validate the change

Start with a model suited to the task and target hardware. Consider quantization, pruning, distillation, or hardware-aware architecture design where they address a measured constraint. These methods can reduce computation, memory use, or package size, but their effect on task quality and runtime depends on the model, data, and processor.

  1. Establish a baseline. Record task quality on representative mission data, along with model size, runtime, memory use, and energy on the target compute platform.
  2. Apply one relevant change at a time. For example, test a lower-precision representation if memory or execution cost is the bottleneck. Keep a known baseline so you can identify whether a change helped.
  3. Recheck mission-relevant errors. Evaluate the failure types that matter to the task, not just an overall score. A smaller model is not a useful deployment if it makes consequential detections unreliable.
  4. Confirm the deployment path. Check that the selected runtime supports the model’s operations and that preprocessing, inference, and postprocessing work together on the target processor.

NASA’s SC-LEARN publication describes training and quantizing TensorFlow models for its Edge TPU-based design; it does not establish a universal satellite model format. ESA Φ-lab’s project summary describes hardware-aware profiling of latency, memory, and power as part of neural architecture search for onboard deployment.

Plan bandwidth-efficient updates and recovery

Assume a large post-launch replacement may be difficult or unavailable unless the mission has established otherwise. NASA’s May 2026 Prithvi report says active satellites may not accept large software updates and describes task-specific decoder packages as a smaller way to add a task than uploading an entire replacement model. That is a design pattern, not a guarantee that every satellite can use decoder updates.

Before launch, define how an update is checked, stored, activated, and reversed if it fails. Keep the update mechanism within the spacecraft’s communication and storage limits.

  • Validate model and software packages against the target runtime before transmission.
  • Verify package integrity and compatibility before activation.
  • Preserve a known-good version while testing or activating a replacement.
  • Specify behavior after an interrupted upload, failed startup, or invalid output.
  • Make sure the spacecraft can return to a stable state without relying on a successful new downlink.

ESA’s ASCEND page describes A/B boot redundancy and golden-image recovery in its supervisor architecture. Those are examples of recovery mechanisms; the appropriate implementation depends on the mission’s architecture and assurance requirements.

Qualify for the actual flight environment

Do not treat a commercial development board or a processor’s terrestrial performance as proof of flight suitability. Assess radiation effects, thermal conditions, vibration, interfaces, lifetime, and the spacecraft’s fault-management design for the specific hardware revision and orbit.

ESA’s June 2023 report describes proton testing of Myriad 2 for single-event effects and total ionizing dose, with results indicating suitability for LEO missions in that activity. That evidence applies to the reported device and test scope; it does not establish suitability for another processor, board, orbit, or mission. ESA also notes that using a commercial off-the-shelf component in space requires thorough testing and development for in-space conditions and operational requirements.

Qualification is broader than a processor surviving a radiation test. The integrated payload must also work with the spacecraft’s power, thermal, data, fault-management, and recovery systems under the conditions the mission expects.

Use a mission-specific decision checklist

  • Is the onboard decision narrow enough to define inputs, outputs, timing, and acceptable errors?
  • Are available power, energy, thermal capacity, memory, storage, and interfaces documented for the intended operating schedule?
  • Have candidate architectures been compared on the same representative workload, including preprocessing and data handoff?
  • Have model changes been measured for both task quality and resource use on the target hardware?
  • Can the mission validate updates, tolerate interrupted or failed updates, and restore a known-good state?
  • Is the qualification evidence relevant to the exact hardware revision, integration, orbit, and mission lifetime?
