To delete a single ChatGPT conversation, open its ••• menu, choose Delete, and confirm. To remove every ChatGPT conversation, use Settings > Data controls > Delete all chats. In Gemini on the web, open the side panel, hover over a chat, choose More > Delete; use Gemini Apps Activity for broader history and auto-delete controls. For Meta AI, Meta has published the /reset-ai command for deleting AI messages, while WhatsApp provides controls to delete individual Meta AI chats or request deletion of information you shared. These actions have different scopes and retention rules, so deleting a visible chat is not automatically the same as erasing every related copy.
What each delete action actually removes
“Chat history” can mean one conversation, every conversation shown in an app, an activity log used for personalization, or the account itself. Choose the narrowest action that meets your goal and check associated content separately.

Deleting a chat is also different from archiving it, disabling model-improvement use, or deleting your whole account. Archiving hides a ChatGPT conversation from the normal sidebar but keeps it in your account and searchable. Turning off Improve the model for everyone changes how new conversations may be used; it does not erase existing chats. Deleting a conversation does not remove a file that was saved separately in ChatGPT’s Library. Account deletion is a separate, much broader process and is not required to clear conversation history.
Delete ChatGPT history
Delete one ChatGPT conversation
- Open ChatGPT and display the conversation list.
- Find the conversation you want to remove.
- Open its ••• options menu.
- Select Delete.
- Read the warning and confirm the deletion.
The chat should disappear from the account view immediately. OpenAI’s current Help Center policy says the deleted conversation is then scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The policy lists exceptions: data may already have been de-identified and disassociated from you, or it may be retained longer when required for security or legal obligations. The 30-day period is therefore a deletion schedule, not a promise that every technical copy vanishes at the instant you press the button.

Delete every ChatGPT conversation
- Open your profile menu and select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Choose Delete all chats.
- Review the confirmation, then continue.
This bulk action cannot be undone through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support. It can affect chats in projects in the current account or workspace, so check that you are signed into the intended account before confirming. If you use more than one workspace, repeat the check in each workspace where you want history removed; an action in one account or workspace should not be assumed to cover another.
Do not confuse ChatGPT archiving with deletion
Archive is useful when you want a cleaner sidebar without losing the conversation. An archived chat remains in the account under the same retention rules and remains searchable. To erase it, use the chat’s delete action rather than archive. If a sensitive conversation was archived previously, search for it and delete it explicitly.
Handle ChatGPT files separately
A file uploaded in a conversation may also be stored in ChatGPT’s Library. Deleting the conversation does not delete a separate Library copy. Open the Library, identify the file, and remove it there if your goal is to eliminate both the chat and the retained upload. Treat exported copies, screenshots, browser downloads and files saved on another device as separate copies outside the chat-history control.

Changing training settings is not a history wipe
In Settings > Data controls, the Improve the model for everyone setting controls whether new conversations are used for model improvement. Switching it off does not hide or delete saved chats. If you need both outcomes, change the setting and then delete the conversations using the steps above.

What happens after ChatGPT deletion
- The conversation is removed from your account view immediately.
- OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, except where its policy allows de-identification or longer security or legal retention.
- Deleted chats cannot be restored through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support.
- Library files, exported files and other copies need their own deletion steps.
Delete Gemini conversations and Gemini Apps Activity
Delete one Gemini chat on the web
- Open the Gemini web app and expand the side panel.
- Locate the pinned or recent conversation.
- Hover over the chat to reveal its controls.
- Select More, then Delete.
- Confirm when Gemini asks.
Google says deleting a chat this way also deletes the related Gemini Apps activity and content created in that chat, including Canvas documents and apps. That relationship is useful when you want the conversation and its Gemini-created output removed together.
Delete or review a wider Gemini activity history
Gemini Apps Activity is a separate control surface from the side-panel conversation list. Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google account controls to review entries, delete selected activity or delete a broader range, and change automatic deletion. Use this area when your goal is to manage the account-level activity record rather than only one visible conversation.

Auto-delete is not retroactive proof that every copy has disappeared. Google says activity already reviewed by human reviewers may be retained separately for up to three years. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity also does not delete data saved in other Google services, and other settings such as Web & App Activity may continue to save related data. If a Gemini response used information that was also saved in another Google product, inspect that product’s own controls.
Personal, work and school accounts behave differently
The web steps above apply to a personal account. For a work or school account, the Google Workspace administrator may control Gemini Apps Activity, retention and whether users can delete chats or change settings. If controls are missing or disabled, contact the administrator rather than assuming the conversation was deleted. A managed account can have rules that differ from your personal Google account.

Verify a Gemini deletion
- Check that the conversation no longer appears in the side panel.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity and look for the corresponding entry if you deleted a single chat.
- Check whether a Canvas document or app created in that chat is still listed.
- Remember that Google services outside Gemini may retain their own copies.
Delete Meta AI chat history
Use Meta’s published reset command
Meta’s September 2023 Newsroom guidance states: “For example you can delete your AI messages by typing /reset-ai in a conversation.” Meta said the command applies across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. Enter the command in the Meta AI conversation and follow the response or confirmation shown by the app.
This is a published command, not a guarantee that every current interface still exposes identical behavior. Apps, regions and account types can change. If the command is rejected, produces no confirmation or is unavailable, open the app’s current Help section and use the deletion control documented there. Do not paste private information into a new conversation merely to test the command.
Delete an individual Meta AI chat in WhatsApp
WhatsApp Help describes deleting individual chats with Meta AI. In the current WhatsApp interface, open the Meta AI conversation, use the conversation-information or overflow menu, choose the available delete-chat action, and confirm. Menu labels can vary by operating system and app version, so follow the wording displayed on your device.
Request deletion of information shared with Meta AI
WhatsApp Help also describes a way to request deletion of information previously shared with Meta AI. Use the request path in WhatsApp’s current Help documentation when deleting the visible conversation is not enough—for example, when you want to ask that information supplied in an earlier exchange be removed. Keep the request confirmation for your records and check the app’s response for its stated scope.

Country and feature availability
WhatsApp notes that Meta AI features may be limited by country. The exact controls available in Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp may therefore differ, and the 2023 /reset-ai instruction may not be implemented identically everywhere. Treat the in-app Help content for your account and country as the final interface guide.
Deletion, archiving, activity and account controls compared

Which control should you use?
You only need one embarrassing or sensitive exchange gone
Delete that individual conversation, then inspect related files, generated documents and downloads. This limits the scope of the action while addressing the specific material.
You want a clean conversation list
For ChatGPT, delete all chats if you want them removed, or archive chats if you only want them out of the sidebar. For Gemini, review both the side-panel chats and Gemini Apps Activity so that a clean visible list is not mistaken for an empty activity record.

Set Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete to 3, 18, 36 months or indefinite according to your retention preference. ChatGPT’s documented 30-day deletion schedule applies after you delete chats; it is not the same as an automatic rolling-delete setting. Meta’s available retention controls depend on the app and country, so use its current Help instructions.
You use an employer or school account
Check the account identity before deleting anything. Gemini work and school accounts may be governed by a Workspace administrator, who can control retention and deletion permissions. A personal-account procedure may not work on a managed account.
Troubleshoot a chat that will not disappear
The delete option is missing
- Confirm that you are signed into the account containing the chat.
- Expand the correct workspace or profile; a different workspace can have a separate history.
- Update or reload the app, then reopen the conversation menu.
- For Gemini work or school accounts, ask the Workspace administrator whether deletion is restricted.
- For Meta AI, check the current in-app Help because feature availability varies by country and app.
The chat vanished but related material remains
Check separate storage locations: ChatGPT Library files, Gemini Canvas documents and apps, Google services outside Gemini, device downloads, screenshots and exported transcripts. A conversation-control action cannot remove a copy that was saved outside that service’s history system.
You expected immediate permanent erasure
ChatGPT’s policy distinguishes immediate removal from the account view and permanent system deletion scheduled within 30 days, with stated exceptions. Gemini documents separate retention for activity reviewed by human reviewers, potentially up to three years. Meta’s public command does not establish one universal retention period for every app. Read the service’s confirmation and privacy documentation rather than treating a disappearing sidebar item as proof that all backend retention has ended.

ChatGPT deleted chats cannot be restored through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support. Gemini and Meta recovery options depend on the current product and are not guaranteed; pause before confirming future deletions and export information you need to keep before using a bulk action.
A practical privacy checklist
- Identify the exact account, workspace and app where the conversation appears.
- Decide whether you need to delete one chat, all chats, activity history or a separately stored file.
- Use the service-specific deletion path and read the confirmation before accepting.
- Remove related files, Canvas content, exports and device copies separately.
- Check the relevant activity page after deletion, especially for Gemini.
- Set an auto-delete period where the service offers one and record the date you selected.
- For managed accounts, confirm the administrator’s retention policy.
- Do not assume deleting a chat deletes your account or data held in another service.
What to remember
ChatGPT has the clearest separation between one-chat deletion and Delete all chats, with immediate account-view removal and a documented 30-day system-deletion schedule subject to exceptions. Gemini couples a deleted chat with related Gemini Apps Activity and created content, but its activity controls are separate and do not cover other Google services; reviewed activity can be retained separately for up to three years. Meta publishes /reset-ai and WhatsApp documents chat deletion and information-deletion requests, yet its exact controls remain app- and country-dependent. Use the narrowest appropriate control, then check associated storage rather than assuming one button erases every copy.
