Use Windows 10’s built-in cleanup: open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, select Previous version of Windows, and choose Remove files. Do this only after the new installation works and you have copied anything needed from the old installation, because removal permanently ends your ability to roll back.
What Windows.old contains
Windows.old is a temporary folder created when Windows upgrades an existing installation. It stores the previous Windows system files so that Windows can restore the earlier version during the rollback period. The folder may also contain personal files that were temporarily preserved during the upgrade.

It is not an ordinary download or cache directory. Its contents can occupy many gigabytes, but they are tied to recovery and migration. Deleting the folder removes those recovery files rather than uninstalling the current Windows 10 installation.

When deleting it is safe
Delete the previous installation only when all three conditions are true:

- Top product with Great Reviews
- Windows 10 starts normally and your essential applications, drivers, network connections and peripherals work.
- You are certain you will not need to return to the Windows version that was installed before the upgrade.
- You have opened the old installation and copied any needed documents, photos or other files to your current profile, another drive or a backup.
Microsoft warns that deleting the previous version cannot be undone for rollback. If the new installation later develops an incompatibility, removing Windows.old means the built-in return-to-previous-version option is no longer available.
Windows’ automatic 10-day cleanup window
Microsoft’s current support guidance says the previous installation is normally deleted automatically 10 days after an upgrade. Personal files retained in Windows.old are also temporary and are generally removed after that period. The 10-day period is a window for testing the new installation and recovering files, not a guarantee that every computer will keep the folder for exactly that long; a different upgrade state or an earlier cleanup can remove it sooner.
If you are still inside that window and are undecided, waiting costs nothing and preserves the rollback files. If disk space is urgently needed, use the supported cleanup procedure after completing the safety checks above.

Storage settings provide the clearest supported deletion path and display the specific category that removes the old installation.
- Sign in to an account with administrator rights.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Storage.
- Open Temporary files. Depending on your Windows 10 build, the page may use a closely related cleanup label while showing the same temporary-file categories.
- Allow Windows to calculate the categories. Check Previous version of Windows. Read the size shown before continuing so you know which space is being reclaimed.
- Choose Remove files, then approve the administrator prompt. Windows may take several minutes while it removes protected files.
- Restart only if Windows requests it. Afterward, return to Settings > System > Storage and verify that available space has increased.
Do not select unrelated categories merely to make the list shorter. Review each checked item, especially Downloads, Recycle Bin and personal temporary files, because those categories can contain data you still want.
Alternative built-in method: Disk Cleanup
Some Windows 10 releases still expose the classic Disk Cleanup utility. It is also a Microsoft-supported way to remove the previous installation, although names and availability vary by release.
- Open the Start menu, type Disk Cleanup, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator.
- Select the Windows system drive if prompted, usually the drive containing the
Windowsfolder, and let the utility calculate reclaimable space. - Choose Clean up system files. Select the system drive again if prompted and wait for the second scan.
- Check Previous Windows installation(s), review the reported size, and select OK.
- Confirm deletion. Disk Cleanup may show a warning that the previous installation cannot be restored; proceed only if you have made the decision described above.
Storage settings are generally easier to interpret on current Windows 10 builds. Disk Cleanup is useful when the Storage page does not show the category but the old installation is still listed by the classic utility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck files before cleanup
If you are unsure whether anything remains in the old installation, inspect it before selecting Remove files. In File Explorer, open the system drive and look for Windows.old. Browse the old user-profile folders only to identify data that was not transferred; copy needed files to a safe destination first. Do not edit or move system files inside the old Windows directories as a substitute for the guided cleanup.
Use a second drive, cloud storage or another verified backup location for anything important. Copying a file and opening the copy confirms that it is readable before the source is removed. Keep the backup until you have confirmed that the current installation contains the required data.

- Automatic cleanup already occurred: Windows may have reached the end of its 10-day period and removed the folder.
- No rollback payload was created: Some upgrade paths do not leave a usable previous installation.
- The folder was cleaned earlier: Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup or an administrator may already have removed it.
- The upgrade did not complete in the expected way: The old-installation category may not be available even though other temporary-file categories are.
Use Settings > System > Storage to see which categories currently consume space. If Windows.old is still visible in File Explorer but the Storage category is absent, try Disk Cleanup with Clean up system files. If neither utility lists the previous installation, do not force-delete protected files; the folder may be in use, incomplete or already accounted for by servicing.

Why manual Explorer or command-line deletion is a poor first choice
Windows protects parts of the old installation. Deleting Windows.old directly in File Explorer can produce access-denied messages, ownership prompts or a partial removal. Command-line deletion can bypass the guided warning and make it easier to remove the wrong path. Most importantly, either approach can eliminate rollback without clearly showing the consequence.
The Storage and Disk Cleanup workflows request administrator approval, target the recognized previous-installation category and handle protected files through Windows servicing. Use those built-in tools instead of taking ownership of folders or deleting unrelated directories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not delete other system folders to free space
Windows.old is different from WinSxS, System32, the component store and other active Windows directories. Removing those folders manually can break servicing, updates or startup. If another category is consuming space, investigate it through Storage settings and use the cleanup option intended for that category. Microsoft documents built-in servicing cleanup for component-store files; it is not the same operation as deleting a previous installation.
How to verify the result
- Open Settings > System > Storage and note the free-space figure.
- After cleanup completes, refresh the page or reopen Storage and compare the figure. The recovered amount depends on the size of the previous installation and any other categories removed.
- Check that Windows starts, applications launch and hardware still works. Removing
Windows.oldshould not remove the active installation, but confirming normal operation catches unrelated problems early. - If you expected a large increase but saw little change, inspect Storage categories again. The old installation may have been small, already removed, or only part of the space usage.
Choosing the right action
| Situation | Best action | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You upgraded recently and everything is still being tested | Wait up to the normal 10-day cleanup period | Rollback remains available, but the space stays occupied temporarily |
| You are satisfied with Windows 10 and need the space now | Storage > Temporary files > Previous version of Windows > Remove files | Rollback is permanently removed |
| Storage settings do not show the item | Check Storage categories, then run Disk Cleanup as administrator and use Clean up system files | The folder may already be gone or may not contain a removable payload |
| You still need files from the old profile | Copy and verify those files before cleanup | Cleanup must wait until the recovery copy is complete |
Common questions and pitfalls
Will deleting Windows.old uninstall Windows 10?
No. The action removes the previous installation and its rollback data. Your current Windows 10 installation remains in place.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I roll back after deletion?
No. Microsoft states that deleting the previous version cannot be undone for rollback. A separate system-image backup may provide another recovery route, but deleting the folder itself does not create one.
Why does cleanup require an administrator?
The folder contains protected operating-system files. Windows requires elevation so that only an authorized user can remove them.
Should I restart after removing it?
Restart only when Windows asks. A restart is not normally required solely to finish this cleanup, although it can help confirm that the system starts normally afterward.
What if the removal appears stuck?
Large protected-file cleanups can take time. Keep the computer connected to power, avoid forcibly shutting it down, and wait for the utility to finish. If the utility reports an error, reboot and retry the same built-in method rather than deleting individual files. Persistent servicing errors should be handled through Windows repair guidance, not by removing active system directories.
Bottom line
Windows.old is a temporary previous-installation and rollback store. Once you have tested the current Windows 10 setup and recovered any needed files, the supported deletion path is Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files > Previous version of Windows > Remove files. Windows normally cleans it up after 10 days, and deleting it sooner permanently gives up the built-in rollback option.
