In Samsung Messages, open the conversation, touch and hold the message, tap Delete, then confirm with Move to Trash. If Trash is enabled, you can restore deleted messages from it for 30 days. Check which messaging app you use first: Samsung’s recovery guidance says deleting in Google Messages is permanent, while archived conversations can be unarchived.
Delete a text in Samsung Messages
- Open Samsung Messages and select the conversation.
- Touch and hold the message you want to remove. To select every message in that conversation, tap All when it appears.
- Tap Delete, then tap Move to Trash to confirm.
Samsung’s instructions describe selecting messages within a conversation; they do not establish that this action deletes every conversation on the phone. For multiple selected messages, use the same Delete and Move to Trash confirmation. Menu labels can vary by app version, device, carrier, and region. See Samsung’s Samsung Messages instructions.

Check which messaging app you use
Open the app’s details or look at its name and icon before following deletion or recovery steps. Samsung Galaxy phones may use Samsung Messages or Google Messages, and the apps handle deletion differently. Samsung describes Google Messages as the default app for RCS on and between US carriers, but defaults and availability vary; do not assume this applies to every Galaxy phone.

Google Messages: distinguish Delete from Archive
Samsung’s recovery guidance says messages deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted. An archived conversation is different: open Google Messages, tap your profile, choose Archived, select the conversation, and choose Unarchive. If you are unsure whether you archived or deleted a conversation, check Archived before pursuing a backup restore. See Samsung’s guidance for recovering deleted messages and its information about Google Messages and RCS.
Restore a deleted message from Samsung Messages Trash
- In Samsung Messages, tap More options (the three dots).
- Choose Trash.
- Touch and hold the message you want back, then choose Restore. Use Restore all if you want to restore all messages shown in Trash.
Samsung says Trash recovery is available within 30 days when the feature is enabled. If Trash is disabled, this convenient recovery route is unavailable for later deletions. Samsung’s support instructions do not establish whether deleted local data might be recoverable by some other means, so do not treat that as a guarantee. See Samsung Messages Trash instructions.

If the message is no longer in Trash, check for a backup
A backup must have existed before deletion to offer a route back. A restore can return data captured by that backup, but whether it includes a particular message depends on the backup’s timing and method. Check the instructions for your current device and backup before resetting or restoring; some restore flows involve setting up a phone or performing a factory reset.

Google Drive backup
Samsung says messages backed up to a Google account can be restored during initial setup of a new phone or after a factory reset. Its support page says Google backup data can be restored only to a phone running the same Android version or a newer one. Confirm the backup and the setup requirements before resetting, since the restore route may require that step. See Samsung’s recovery guidance.
Smart Switch or external storage
If you have a prior Smart Switch backup, Samsung documents restoring it to a Galaxy phone. It also describes restoring from an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD when supported. A USB flash drive or SSD connects to the phone’s charging port through an OTG adapter; compatibility depends on the device and connection. Samsung says backup files cannot be viewed on a computer, but messages can be read after transfer to the new phone. See Samsung’s Smart Switch and external-storage guidance.

Know the automatic deletion settings
Trash retention and automatic deletion are separate behaviors. Samsung documents the following settings for supported apps and devices; they should not be assumed to apply to every messaging app or Galaxy phone.

- One-time passwords: Samsung describes Android Messages removing one-time passwords after 24 hours.
