Export first if you need a record, then delete the conversations and related data from each provider’s own controls. A downloaded archive is only a copy; it does not remove activity stored on the service. ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini use different menus, account rules, retention periods, and exceptions. The instructions below reflect the documented interfaces and policies available on October 17, 2026; labels and eligibility can change, so confirm the current screen before completing a deletion.
What exporting and deleting actually do
Exporting and deletion are separate operations. An export gives you a copy of conversations or account data, while deletion asks the provider to remove data from its systems. Google’s Gemini Apps Help explicitly warns that downloading Gemini activity does not delete it from Google’s servers. The same principle applies to other chatbot services unless their documentation says otherwise.

Visible chat history is only one data surface. Depending on the service, related information can include saved memories, uploaded files, generated media, custom assistants or “Gems,” feedback, shared links, connected-service records, and workspace-controlled logs. Turning off model-improvement or activity collection also affects future use; it does not automatically erase earlier conversations.

- Export: creates a provider-generated archive or download link.
- Delete a conversation: removes a selected chat from the service’s history and starts whatever backend deletion process the provider documents.
- Delete activity: may cover a date range or all activity, but can have separate exceptions for reviewed data or linked services.
- Delete an account: is the broadest action and is generally permanent. Export anything you need before confirming it.
- Disable training or activity history: limits future use or retention under that provider’s policy; it is not a retroactive deletion.
Before starting, identify whether you are using a personal account, a work or school account, a managed workspace, the web app, desktop software, or a mobile app. The available controls can differ substantially.

Before you delete anything
Decide whether you need a backup
If a conversation contains instructions, research, receipts, code, records, or personal writing you may need later, request an export or copy the material before deletion. An export may contain more than the visible transcript, and providers do not all promise that archives can be imported into another account.
Separate account surfaces
Make a short inventory before pressing a delete button:

- Saved memory or personalization entries.
- Uploaded documents, images, audio, and generated media.
- Custom assistants, Gems, projects, or other reusable configurations.
- Shared conversations and public links.
- Connected applications or data stored in another provider’s service.
- Work, school, or team workspaces controlled by an administrator.
Record what you changed
Note the account, device, date, and setting you changed. If a chat is important to remove, keep the confirmation screen or email. This does not accelerate deletion, but it gives you a clear audit trail when a service has delayed backend processing or separate administrator controls.
How to export or delete ChatGPT conversations and data
Export a personal ChatGPT account
Open ChatGPT while signed in and go to Settings > Data controls. Request an export and follow the confirmation flow. OpenAI also provides an export request through its Privacy Portal. The self-service option is documented for signed-in personal users on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
- Sign in to the correct ChatGPT account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Choose the data-export option and confirm the request.
- Save the archive in a secure location when the provider makes it available.
The cited OpenAI guidance does not state a universal delivery time or download-link lifetime, so do not assume the archive will arrive immediately or remain available indefinitely. If the account is managed by an organization rather than being a personal plan, use the workspace instructions instead of expecting this menu to appear.

When a ChatGPT workspace controls the export
Self-service export is unavailable for Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces in the documented guidance. Ask the workspace owner or administrator for the applicable process. Some Edu workspaces may permit exports if an administrator has enabled that feature. A workspace administrator can also set retention and access rules that an individual member cannot change.

Use the conversation’s menu in the ChatGPT history to delete an individual chat, or use the history/data controls for the option to delete all conversations. Verify that you are signed in to the account that owns the history; deleting a chat from a different account or workspace will not affect the intended copy.
OpenAI’s consumer privacy information also describes account deletion. Account deletion is permanent and affects associated data and subscriptions, so treat it as a final step after exporting anything you need and checking whether a paid subscription must be handled separately.
Limit future model-improvement use
In Settings > Data controls, the Improve the model for everyone control determines whether new conversations are used for model improvement under OpenAI’s consumer setting. Turning it off is not the same as deleting history: OpenAI says new chats may still appear in your chat history even when they are not used for training. Change this setting before starting new sensitive conversations if your goal is to limit future model-improvement use.
ChatGPT troubleshooting
- Export is missing: confirm that you are signed in, using a supported personal plan, and not inside a managed workspace that requires an administrator.
- A deleted chat still appears: refresh, sign out and back in, and check that you deleted the correct account or workspace. Do not infer that a temporary display problem proves backend deletion has completed.
- You need data from a team account: contact the workspace owner rather than creating a second personal export request.
How to export or delete Claude conversations and data
Export from Claude web or desktop
For an individual Claude account, start on the web app or in Claude Desktop. Open Settings > Privacy and request an export of user information and chat history.
- Open Claude in a browser or Claude Desktop.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Choose the export option and submit the request.
- Watch the account email for the download link and save the archive securely.
Claude for iOS and Android cannot initiate this export. Use the web app or desktop application instead. Anthropic does not state a link-expiration period in the cited instructions, so download the archive promptly rather than assuming it will remain available.

Understand the portability limit
Anthropic says an individual Claude export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account and that it does not support migration between personal accounts. An export is therefore a record for your own storage, not a one-click transfer mechanism.
Delete Claude conversations
Delete a conversation from the Claude history using its conversation controls. For consumer Claude, Anthropic says the conversation is removed from the history view immediately and automatically deleted from its backend within 30 days. That is a stated maximum window for the documented backend process, not a guarantee that every related copy in another system disappears at the same moment.
Delete the Claude account
Account deletion is permanent. Export required conversations and user information before confirming it, and make sure you are deleting the intended personal account rather than only removing a chat from the history list.

- No export button in the mobile app: switch to Claude on the web or Claude Desktop.
- The email has not arrived: check the address associated with the account and its spam or filtered folders, then verify that the request was made in the correct account.
- You expected an import: retain the downloaded archive and manually move any needed material; personal-account migration is not supported.
How to delete or export Gemini activity and personal data
Export Gemini chats, media, uploads, and Gems
Google uses Takeout for exports. The selections are split by data type:
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the relevant Google account.
- Select Gemini to include Gems.
- Select My Activity, then choose Gemini Apps for Gemini chat activity, generated media, and uploads.
- Continue through Takeout’s export settings and request the archive.
- Use the emailed download link within seven days; Google documents that availability window.
Google Gemini Apps Help states: “If you download your Gemini Apps activity, it doesn’t delete it from Google’s servers.” Requesting and downloading Takeout is therefore a backup step, not a deletion step. Keep the archive protected because it may contain prompts, uploaded files, generated content, and account activity.
Delete all, part, or one item of Gemini activity
Open the Gemini activity page from Gemini settings or Google My Activity. For a signed-in personal account, Google documents controls for deleting all activity, a custom date range, one day, or an individual activity item.

- Open Gemini and enter its settings, or go directly to Google My Activity.
- Open the Gemini activity controls.
- Choose the scope: one item, one day, a date range, or all activity.
- Review the selected range carefully.
- Confirm deletion and return to the activity page to verify that the selected entries no longer appear.
Deleting activity does not remove data held in other Google services. Google also warns that deleting a chat containing a Gem does not necessarily delete the Gem itself, and deleting a shared chat does not delete its public link. Handle those related surfaces separately.
Change Gemini’s automatic retention
The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated September 24, 2026, documents an 18-month default auto-delete setting for Gemini Apps Activity. The available alternatives are three months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. This setting changes future automatic deletion; it does not retroactively remove activity that has already been reviewed by human reviewers.
Turn Keep Activity off
In the Gemini activity controls, turn Keep Activity off to prevent future chats from appearing in Activity and from being used to train Google’s AI models, subject to Google’s stated feedback exceptions. This is not instant zero-retention: Google says future chats can still be retained for 72 hours for service operation, feedback processing, and safety. Previously reviewed data may remain for up to three years.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains the human-review exception this way: “If you delete your activity, past chats already reviewed by service providers aren’t deleted because they aren’t connected to your Google Account.” Do not promise complete erasure when this exception applies.
Work and school Gemini accounts
Google Workspace administrators may control activity, retention, and deletion settings for work or school accounts. You may be unable to inspect or change those settings yourself. If a control is missing, ask the Workspace administrator which policy applies instead of assuming that the personal-account workflow is available.
Gemini troubleshooting
- A chat is gone but a Gem remains: delete or manage the Gem separately.
- A public link still works: deleting the chat does not necessarily remove its shared public link; revoke or remove the link through its own control.
- Old reviewed activity remains: the documented human-review retention exception can last up to three years.
- Keep Activity off but a recent chat exists: the 72-hour service-retention period can apply before the chat is discarded.
- Takeout did not include expected content: check that both “Gemini” and “My Activity” > “Gemini Apps” were selected; they cover different categories.
How to reduce future retention without deleting an account
Use the provider’s activity, privacy, or model-improvement controls before entering new sensitive information. The effect is service-specific:

For any provider, avoid treating a privacy toggle as a deletion receipt. Check the provider’s documented scope and timing, then review linked services, shared content, memories, and administrator policies.
A safe sequence for a complete cleanup
- Identify the account and platform. Confirm the email, personal or managed status, and whether you are on web, desktop, or mobile.
- Export what you need. Use the provider’s official export flow or Google Takeout. Save the archive securely.
- Remove high-risk related items. Review uploaded files, generated media, saved memories, Gems or custom assistants, connected services, and shared links.
- Delete conversations or activity. Choose the narrowest scope that meets your goal, or delete all activity when appropriate.
- Change future-retention settings. Disable model improvement, Keep Activity, or set auto-delete according to the provider’s controls.
- Handle the account itself only if necessary. Account deletion is permanent for the services described here and can affect subscriptions or organizational access.
- Verify and document. Recheck the history and activity pages, note any stated waiting period, and retain confirmation messages.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming export equals deletion
A Takeout archive or provider export duplicates data. It does not remove the server copy. Always perform the separate deletion step.
Deleting only the visible transcript
A chat list may not represent Gems, memories, files, public links, feedback, or data in another service. Check each surface that the provider identifies.
Using personal-account instructions in a workspace
Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, Edu, and Google Workspace accounts can have administrator-controlled retention and export. Missing controls often indicate an account-policy difference, not a broken browser.
Expecting instant backend erasure
Claude documents backend deletion within 30 days. Gemini documents 72 hours of service retention for future chats when Keep Activity is off and up to three years for activity already reviewed by human reviewers. ChatGPT’s cited consumer guidance does not provide one universal backend-deletion interval.
Deleting before securing the backup
Account deletion is permanent for ChatGPT and Claude in the cited guidance. Download or copy essential material first, then confirm that the archive opens and contains what you expected.
What these workflows do—and do not—say about privacy
The documented controls explain how to export, delete, or limit future use; they do not provide a universal ranking of these services’ privacy. Retention depends on account type, settings, human review, safety processing, connected products, and administrator policy. Treat each provider’s stated window as a service-specific operational rule, not as a promise that all chatbot data everywhere follows the same schedule.
For services not covered by the workflows above, do not assume that ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini instructions apply. Open that provider’s current privacy and account-help documentation, identify the exact account type, and look for separate controls for exports, history, memory, shared links, uploads, and training use.
