There is no single reset that erases every trace of your driving history. Clear information stored in the car, unlink the vehicle from connected-services accounts to stop associated access or future transmissions, and make a separate privacy request if you want the automaker to address data already on its servers. The exact controls depend on your make, model year, software, service, and country.
Know which history you want to remove
“Car history” can refer to information in three different places. Treating them separately helps avoid assuming that deleting one record clears the others.

- In the vehicle: Navigation destinations and searches, trip logs, user profiles, paired phones, contacts, and infotainment preferences may be stored locally.
- In your connected-services account: The automaker may associate the vehicle’s VIN with your account and use that connection for remote features or data transmission.
- In the automaker’s systems: Data previously sent to the company may be handled under its privacy notice, retention policy, and applicable privacy rights. A local reset does not by itself establish that those records have been erased.
For example, Ford says deleting its app does not disable connected-data sharing; its guidance instead identifies a vehicle reset or removing the VIN from associated accounts. Toyota describes opting out or deactivating transmission as stopping collection of certain listed categories, not as a promise to purge all historical records. Find the vehicle-specific reset control
Before changing settings, note the make, model year, infotainment system, and connected-services provider. Use the owner’s manual or the automaker’s official instructions for that specific vehicle. Ford and General Motors direct owners to vehicle settings or the owner’s manual for reset and deletion instructions; menu names and paths are not universal. Ford privacy policy; GM privacy statement.

- Inspect the infotainment system. Look for saved destinations, recent searches, trip history, profiles, contacts, paired phones, and account sign-ins. The available categories vary by vehicle.
- Choose the appropriate clear-history or reset option. Use the owner’s manual to distinguish deletion of selected data from a master, factory, or connectivity reset. A full reset may also remove saved preferences and paired devices.
- Confirm what the reset covers. Follow the vehicle’s instructions and check whether the control clears only local infotainment data or also affects connected services. Do not treat a screen reset as proof that account or backend records are gone.
Unlink the vehicle and address future data collection
In the automaker’s app or website, remove the vehicle or VIN from every account that has access to it—including shared or former-user accounts where you can manage them. If you no longer want connected features, separately review the service’s cancellation, deactivation, or opt-out controls. Removing an app from a phone is not the same as removing the vehicle from an account.
What the manufacturer guidance says
- Ford: Ford says a connected vehicle may send information, including location, while associated with an account. Its guidance identifies a master or factory reset or removal of the VIN from the account or app garage. Ford says the vehicle must be removed from every associated account to end related remote access and transmission; deleting the app alone does not disable data sharing. Ford privacy policy.
- Toyota (U.S. notice): Toyota’s Connected Services notice covers Location Data, Remote Data, Driving Data, and Profile Data. Examples include vehicle location, last-ignition-off information such as trip distance, and, for supported profiles, saved map locations and search or routing history. The notice says owners may opt out of Connected Services or request transmission deactivation through the Toyota app or vehicle SOS button. - General Motors: Some model-year 2019-and-later vehicles may have OnStar location controls in infotainment Privacy Settings. GM says location may still be collected in specified emergencies even when location services are disabled. To disconnect and unenroll from OnStar, its statement directs owners to contact an Advisor or use the in-vehicle blue button; stated connectivity and high-voltage-battery exceptions apply. - Tesla: Tesla’s support page distinguishes access to a data copy from account deletion. A copy may include account information, service history, vehicle usage, infotainment settings, app usage, and Supercharging history; downloading it does not remove the data from Tesla’s servers. The page provides account and app routes to request account deletion and says active Tesla products must first be removed from the account. Request action on data the automaker already holds
If you want the company to address records it has already received, use its privacy or account process separately from the in-car reset and vehicle unlinking. Check the company’s privacy notice for available access, deletion, or deactivation requests, what data they cover, and any applicable exceptions. A request for a copy is not an erasure request: Tesla explicitly says downloading a data copy does not delete it from its servers. Tesla privacy support.

Retention also varies by company and data category. Toyota Motor North America’s Connected Services Privacy Notice, accessed in 2026, says it will store Location Data in identifiable form for no more than seven years from creation and Driving Data in identifiable form for no more than 15 years from creation. Prepare both the vehicle and its account connection. GM warns that personal information left in the car may be available to later users and encourages owners to delete it and contact the company to transfer or cancel the account. - Use the vehicle-specific instructions to clear local destinations, searches, contacts, profiles, paired devices, and other personal information.
- Remove the VIN from every associated owner or shared account you control.
- Contact the automaker to transfer or cancel connected services as appropriate, and ask about any separate privacy request for data already held.
GM’s U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement puts its transfer advice this way: “If you sell or otherwise transfer your vehicle, we strongly encourage you to delete all Personal Information (such as contacts, address searches, saved map addresses, or preferences) from the vehicle and contact us to transfer or cancel your account.” GM privacy statement.

- A vehicle reset is for information stored in the car; it is not automatically a backend deletion request.
- Removing a VIN or opting out can affect account access or future collection, but the scope depends on the service and the specific control.
- Emergency or safety-related collection may be treated differently from ordinary location services; GM describes specified emergency exceptions.
- Policies and deletion rights depend on the automaker, model and service, as well as the country whose privacy rules apply. The linked manufacturer pages primarily describe U.S. services; consult the local privacy notice if you are elsewhere.
For an exact menu path, identify the make, model, year, country, infotainment system, and connected-service name. Without those details, a generic tap sequence could send you to the wrong control.
