How to delete Google Maps location data without deleting your Google account

Yes—you can keep your Google Account and remove Google Maps location data. Google separates visits and routes (now called Timeline) from searches and other in-app actions (called Maps history). Turn off Timeline and delete the records you want, then clear Maps history separately if you also want searches, directions, place views, shared links, or calls removed. Other Google activity, photos, browser history, other devices, and backups may require separate cleanup.

First identify which “location history” you want to remove

Google Maps uses more than one record type. Deleting one does not automatically delete the others, so choose the scope before confirming anything. Many people use “location history” to mean every trace of using Maps, but Google’s controls divide that information into separate products.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Data set What it can contain Where you delete it What remains outside that control
Timeline Visits and routes, including precise device location saved while Timeline is enabled Google Maps Timeline or the Google Account Timeline control Copies on other eligible devices, an optional encrypted backup, and unrelated Google activity
Maps history Maps searches, directions, viewed places, shared Maps links, and calls to places Google Maps → Maps history Timeline visits, saved lists and labels, reviews, photos, edits, feedback, and related activity elsewhere
Other Google activity Location-related context in Search Services History or Web & App Activity, such as a general area or IP-derived location The corresponding Google Account activity control Timeline and Maps history unless you delete those separately
Photos and browser data Location metadata embedded in photos and locally stored browser history Your photo/camera settings and browser history controls These are not cleared by Maps deletion

Google’s current terminology and menu placement can change as account controls roll out. If a label differs from the instructions below, open the current activity controls while signed in to the account you intend to keep. Google’s explanations of Timeline are at Manage your Timeline data, and the Maps-specific controls are described in Manage your Maps history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no charge for these first-party controls, and you do not need a privacy app, paid service, phone accessory, or third-party cleanup utility. The important requirement is access to the correct Google Account and to each device or browser where the relevant data may be stored.

Before you delete anything

  • Confirm the account. In Maps or your browser, check the profile photo and account address. Deletion applies to the signed-in account and, for Timeline, may be device-specific.
  • Decide whether you need a partial or complete deletion. Timeline and Maps history both support removing selected records, a date range, today’s activity, or all available history, but the choices appear in different screens.
  • Save anything you need. Deleted visits, routes, searches, and directions may not be recoverable. Export or record information you need before confirming.
  • List every device that used Timeline. Google stores Timeline on eligible devices and can maintain an optional encrypted server backup. A second phone or an old device can therefore hold data you did not remove from the first one.
  • Decide what “done” means. Removing Timeline visits is different from removing searches, reviews, photographs, browser traces, or general-area information. Write down the categories you want cleared so you do not stop after only one screen.
  • Check connectivity and updates. Keep the device connected while you review settings and install the current Maps version if a documented menu is missing. Do not assume that signing out, uninstalling Maps, or deleting the app erases account or Timeline records.

Delete Google Maps Timeline (visits and routes)

Timeline is Google’s current name for the feature many people still call Location History. It is opt-in and off by default. When enabled, it can save precise device location regularly on each eligible signed-in device, even when Google apps are not open. Timeline may therefore show a pattern of visits and routes rather than only the places you deliberately searched for.

The Timeline setting controls future collection; existing records need a separate deletion action unless you choose the combined “turn off and delete” option. Turning the setting off is not the same as clearing old dates. Read the confirmation language carefully so you know whether you are stopping new collection, deleting selected records, or doing both.

Android phone or tablet

Google’s documented Android route is:

  1. Open the Google Maps app and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap Your Timeline.
  3. Tap More, then open Location & privacy settings.
  4. Tap Timeline is on.
  5. Choose Turn off to stop future Timeline saving, or choose Turn off and delete activity to turn it off and remove the Timeline data covered by that action.
  6. Read the confirmation screen and confirm the choice. If you selected a narrower deletion control instead, choose the date or entries to remove and confirm.

Menu names can vary while Google updates the interface. The current Android-specific instructions are in Manage your Google Maps Timeline – Android phone & tablet. If you only turn Timeline off, do not assume old visits disappeared; review the Timeline deletion controls before leaving the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a partial cleanup, open the dates in Timeline first. Removing a particular day or period lets you retain older records you still use while deleting a trip, commute, or other sensitive interval. For a complete cleanup, use the all-history or combined turn-off-and-delete choice presented by the account. Confirm the date range shown; a date selector that looks like a calendar can still represent only the currently displayed day.

Computer or another device

On a computer, sign in to the Google Account you are keeping and open Google Maps. Open the Timeline view or the account’s Timeline activity control, review the dates shown, and use the available delete command to remove selected portions or all Timeline history. Google’s account help page, Manage your Timeline data, is the authoritative route when the Maps interface does not show the same labels as the mobile app.

The web and mobile screens may not offer identical buttons. If the account-level page is the only place showing Timeline controls, use it rather than trying to infer that the data is absent. The account address still matters: a browser can have several Google profiles open, and deleting while the wrong profile is active will not affect the account you meant to keep.

Timeline storage is not identical to ordinary cloud activity storage. Google describes Timeline as being saved on eligible devices, with an optional encrypted backup for moving between devices. If you want the broadest possible removal, repeat the review on every device that has used Timeline and inspect the backup setting presented in your account. Deleting on one device may not remove a copy that remains on another device or in a backup.

Delete Maps searches, directions, and place interactions

Maps history is separate from Timeline. It records actions such as searching for a place, requesting directions, viewing a selected place, sharing a Maps link, or calling a place. Removing Maps history does not remove visits and routes shown in Timeline. Conversely, deleting a Timeline day does not necessarily remove the searches or directions that helped you plan that trip.

Use Google Maps on a computer

  1. Sign in to Google Maps with the account you want to retain.
  2. Open the main Menu.
  3. Select Maps history.
  4. For a single record, locate the entry and use its delete control.
  5. To clear more, open the page’s delete control and choose Today, a Custom range, or All time.
  6. Review the date range and confirmation details, then confirm deletion.

A one-item deletion is useful when a single search is the concern. Today removes the current day’s qualifying Maps history, while a custom range lets you target a trip or period. All time is the broadest Maps-history choice, but it still does not erase Timeline, contributions, saved places, or records held in other Google activity controls.

The Maps history page also provides a way to delete history associated with a selected place. Use that option when you want to remove the place-related entries without clearing every Maps action. Review the entries before confirming because a place can have several associated actions, such as a search followed by directions and a call.

Google states in Manage your Maps history that when you manually delete activity, or it is removed by an auto-delete setting, Google immediately starts the process of removing it from the product and its systems. That wording describes the start of a storage-removal process, not a guaranteed instant disappearance from every system. Google notes that limited retention can apply for business or legal requirements.

Items Maps history does not remove

Keep these separate if they are part of your privacy goal:

  • Timeline visits and routes
  • Related searches or clicks on websites reached from Maps
  • Saved lists, starred places, and labels
  • Your reviews, uploaded photos, edits, and other contributions

Those items have their own management controls. Deleting a search entry is not the same as deleting a review or an image you published. A saved label can remain useful to you while a search is removed, so do not treat its continued presence as proof that deletion failed.

Check other Google activity that can contain location context

After handling Timeline and Maps history, open your Google Account activity controls and inspect Search Services History and Web & App Activity. Google explains that these controls can retain location-related information associated with use of its services, including a general area or an IP-derived location. They are separate from both Timeline and Maps history, so clearing one does not clear the others.

Location context in these controls may be less precise than a Timeline point, but it can still matter to someone seeking a comprehensive account cleanup. Check the activity type, date range, and account shown before deleting. If you only want to stop future retention, change the relevant activity setting; if you want existing entries removed, use its deletion control as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google is gradually rolling out changes to Search Services History settings. Your account may show a different name, grouping, or path than another person’s account. Use the controls currently displayed for your account rather than relying on an older screenshot or menu sequence. Google’s privacy overview is available in How Google protects your privacy & keeps you in control.

Check photos, browsers, and devices outside Maps

Photos

Photos can contain precise location metadata added by the camera. That metadata is part of the photo file and its photo-service settings, not Maps history. Review the camera’s location-tagging setting and the photo service’s own location or metadata controls. Deleting a Maps search will not strip coordinates from an existing image.

If you share or download an image, its embedded coordinates may travel with the file depending on the camera and sharing workflow. Handle the photo itself when that is part of your goal; changing Timeline does not rewrite older files.

Browser history

A browser can retain the Maps pages you opened, searches entered in the address bar, cookies, and cached data. Browser history is controlled in that browser and is not removed by deleting Timeline or Maps history. If another person can access the same browser profile, clear the relevant local records there as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser cleanup is separate from account cleanup. Deleting a local history entry does not delete an account-side Maps record, and deleting Maps history does not erase a page stored in a browser profile. Check both when you share a computer or use multiple browsers.

Other signed-in devices and Timeline backup

Review phones and tablets that used the account, especially a device being replaced or reset. Timeline may be stored locally on each eligible device, and Google offers an encrypted backup option. The Android help page warns that deletion on one device may not be reflected on another and that Timeline data can remain in a backup. Follow the backup and device controls shown for the account, then repeat the Timeline review where necessary.

A factory reset or app uninstall is not a substitute for using Google’s deletion controls. Those actions may remove local access while leaving account activity, another device’s copy, or a backup untouched. If you no longer have an old device, concentrate on the account-level controls and any backup management option still shown to you.

Set automatic deletion for future activity

For ongoing retention, Google lists auto-delete choices of 3, 18, or 36 months for Timeline and Search Services History. Choose the period in the relevant activity control and confirm it. These options limit how long qualifying future activity is kept; they are not an immediate substitute for manually clearing records already present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you need a clean-up now, perform the manual Timeline and Maps history deletions first, then enable an auto-delete period to reduce future accumulation. Auto-delete settings apply only to the activity type and account control where you set them. Setting an 18-month period for one control does not automatically impose the same period on Maps history or another Google service.

Auto-delete is useful when you want a recurring limit rather than occasional housekeeping. Revisit the setting after Google changes the account interface, particularly if Search Services History is displayed under a new heading.

What deletion can and cannot guarantee

  • It can: remove the selected Timeline records, Maps history entries, or date ranges from the controls you confirm, and stop new Timeline saving when Timeline is turned off.
  • It cannot automatically: delete every location-related signal in other Google activity, remove photo metadata, erase browser records, remove contributions such as reviews, or clear copies on another device or backup.
  • It does not delete your Google Account. Account email, files, subscriptions, and other services remain unless you separately remove them.
  • It does not have a published universal completion time. Google describes deletion as a process that begins immediately and allows limited retention for business or legal reasons; it does not promise that every backend copy is gone after a fixed number of hours or days.

That distinction is important if you are meeting a deadline. A confirmation screen means the deletion request was accepted; it is not a promise that every storage layer, device, backup, browser, or published contribution has changed at that instant.

  1. Open Timeline and check that the intended dates or all history are gone.
  2. Open Maps history and verify the selected entries, date range, or all-time view is empty as expected.
  3. Confirm Timeline is off if you do not want new visits and routes recorded.
  4. Review Search Services History and Web & App Activity for separate location-related records.
  5. Check Timeline-enabled phones and tablets, plus any encrypted backup setting.
  6. Review photo location metadata and browser history if your goal includes information stored outside Google Maps.
  7. Return later if a deletion is still processing; Google does not specify a fixed completion deadline.
  8. Check that you are viewing the same Google Account after each step; a second profile can make an empty screen look like a successful deletion of the wrong account.

If the menu does not match

Google changes labels and gradually rolls out account controls, so a missing “Maps history” or “Timeline is on” label does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable. First verify that you are signed in to the correct account, update Maps, and look for the account-level Timeline or activity controls. Then use the current Google help pages for the device and account type. Avoid switching to a different account just to find a familiar menu, because that would apply the deletion to the wrong data set.

The essential distinction remains the same: use Timeline controls for visits and routes, Maps history for searches and interactions, and the separate activity, photo, browser, device, and backup controls for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete Google Maps location history without deleting my Google Account?

Yes. Delete Timeline and Maps history from their activity controls while signed in. Your email, files, subscriptions, and other Google services remain unless you separately delete the account.

Does turning off Timeline delete old locations?

Not by itself. Turning Timeline off stops future Timeline saving. Use a deletion command, or the combined “Turn off and delete activity” option where offered, to remove existing records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Timeline and Maps history?

Timeline covers visits and routes, including precise device location saved when enabled. Maps history covers actions such as searches, directions, viewed places, shared links, and calls. Each has a separate deletion control.

Will deleting Maps history remove my reviews or saved places?

No. Reviews, uploaded photos, edits, feedback, saved lists, starred places, and labels are managed separately. Maps history deletion removes the qualifying history entries, not those contributions or saved items.

Will deleting Timeline on my phone delete it everywhere?

Not necessarily. Google says Timeline can be stored on eligible devices and may have an encrypted backup. Review other signed-in devices and the backup control if you want the broadest possible deletion.

How long does Google take to erase Maps history?

Google says it immediately starts the removal process after a manual or automatic deletion request. It does not publish a universal number of hours or days for every system, and limited retention may apply for business or legal requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Google still have location information after I clear Maps?

Potentially. Search Services History and Web & App Activity can contain general-area or IP-related location context. Photos can contain coordinates, and browsers can retain local records. Review each relevant control separately.

Do I need a paid privacy product to do this?

No. Google’s own Timeline, Maps history, account activity, device, backup, photo, and browser controls are the appropriate tools for this task. A third-party product is not required.

The Bottom Line

Keep the account, clear the right controls. Use Timeline for visits and routes, Maps history for searches and directions, then check Search Services History, Web & App Activity, photos, browsers, other devices, and backups. Turn Timeline off to stop future saving, use manual deletion for an immediate request, and remember that Google does not promise a fixed time for every system to finish processing it.
