To keep new searches from being saved, turn off the corresponding history controls as well. Clearing account activity does not necessarily erase your browser’s local history, and Google’s newer Search Services History control is still rolling out.
Delete Google Search history saved to your account
- Sign in to the Google Account whose activity you want to remove, then open Google Search Help’s instructions for finding and erasing Search history.
- Open the Search history or My Activity controls shown for your account. Google notes that Search settings are being updated, so the labels and layout may not look identical for every account.
- Use the delete menu to choose a period, such as all time, or set a custom range, then confirm. Deletion cannot be undone.
Deleting activity and stopping future saving are separate choices. If you want both, complete the deletion and then turn off the relevant history control.

Stop Google from saving future searches
In your Google Account activity controls, turn off the history-saving setting available to you. Google’s established instructions refer to Web & App Activity. A newer Search Services History control is being introduced gradually; if it appears in your account, use the displayed control for Search. Google says the rollout may take months, so not every account will show the same options at the same time. See Google’s explanation of Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations.
Search Services History covers Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. It does not include YouTube, Chrome, Gemini Apps, or Google Assistant; those have separate controls. If the newer setting is not available in your account, use the history control currently shown there, which may still be Web & App Activity.

Delete YouTube search history
YouTube search history is separate from Google Search history. In the YouTube account you want to manage, open Manage all history and choose whether to delete individual searches, a selected period, or all time. Follow the prompts to confirm. YouTube’s steps are in YouTube Help.
Check the side effect before deleting a range: YouTube says deleting search history for a selected time period also deletes watch history from that same period. If you only want to remove particular searches, deleting individual entries avoids choosing a broad time range.

Choose which YouTube activity to save
To stop future YouTube activity from being recorded, open YouTube history controls, select Controls, and turn off the history options you do not want. YouTube lets you choose whether to include videos watched, searches, and voice or audio activity. You can manage watch-history options through YouTube Help. Turning off a history option affects activity covered by that control; it does not delete entries already saved, so delete existing activity separately if that is your goal.

Google documents automatic deletion periods of 3, 18, or 36 months for Search activity, and YouTube documents the same choices for its history. These settings manage retention going forward; they do not immediately clear all existing activity. If you need to remove saved history now, use the manual delete controls first, then set auto-delete if you want older future activity removed on a schedule. Clear browser history separately
Deleting activity from your Google Account does not necessarily remove browsing records stored locally in a browser. Clear those through that browser’s own history controls. Google also notes that using the Google app while signed out may save search history on the device. Its guidance on account and browser records is available in Google’s privacy and activity controls overview.

Google Search Help says that when activity is deleted manually or automatically, removal begins from the product and system. Google explains: “First, we aim to remove it from view and the data may no longer be used to personalize your Google experience.” Google then begins a process intended to delete the data from storage systems, while limited business or legal requirements may mean some data is retained longer. This is not a promise that every copy disappears instantly or that browser-local history is erased. Read Google’s explanation of deletion.
