The supported way to remove Apple Intelligence’s on-device models is to turn off Apple Intelligence. Apple states, “If you turn off Apple Intelligence, the on-device models will be removed from your device.” After switching it off, check local storage to see what changed. On iPhone and iPad, use Settings > General > [device] Storage. The amount shown will vary by device, software version and storage categories, so Apple does not promise that every device will immediately regain one fixed amount.
What turning off Apple Intelligence actually removes
Apple Intelligence uses on-device models in addition to any cloud processing used by particular features. The documented removal action is not deleting an app, clearing photos, or managing iCloud: it is disabling Apple Intelligence in Settings. Apple’s support documentation for the 27.0 software releases says that turning off Apple Intelligence removes the on-device models from the device. The separate controls for individual Apple Intelligence functions are useful when you want to restrict a feature, but the iOS 27 guide does not say that turning off one individual function removes every model stored on the device. How much storage can Apple Intelligence use?
Apple publishes maximum storage requirements, not a guaranteed before-and-after result for every device. Its September 15, 2026 support page lists these limits for Apple Intelligence-enabled hardware:

“Up to” is important. These figures describe Apple’s published storage requirements for the relevant device groups; they are not a promise that your phone, tablet, computer, headset or watch will show exactly that amount as recoverable space. The storage screen can group data differently, and Apple does not specify a universal update time or a fixed amount that every user will regain.
The 14 GB figure applies only where Apple lists the required chip and memory combination. A supported device in the other group has a maximum of 8 GB, while Apple Watch has its own 1.5 GB maximum. Do not apply the largest number to every model, and do not treat a published maximum as a measurement of the files currently installed on your device.

- Confirm that the problem is local device storage. iPhone and iPad storage is separate from iCloud storage, so changing Apple Intelligence on the device is not an iCloud cleanup step.
- Record the current storage view if you want a comparison. Open the device storage screen and note the free-space figure and the largest categories before changing the setting.
- Make sure you are changing the main Apple Intelligence control, not only an individual writing, notification, image or other feature control.
- Expect the labels and available controls to depend on your device, language, region and installed operating-system release. The current Apple guide describes the 27.0 releases; earlier versions can look different.
- Allow enough time to complete the settings change and then revisit storage. Apple confirms the removal effect but does not specify a universal delay for the storage display to recalculate.
If you are documenting the change for work or support, take a screenshot of the storage page before switching the feature off. Include the available-space number and the category list, not just the colored bar. That gives you a useful device-specific baseline without assuming that a particular category will be named Apple Intelligence.
iPhone and iPad: remove the models step by step
- Open Settings. Use the Settings app on the device that is short on space.
- Open Apple Intelligence & Siri. The exact wording or placement can vary with the installed operating-system version, but Apple’s current instructions identify this as the area containing the Apple Intelligence control.
- Turn off Apple Intelligence. Use the switch or control shown on your device. This is the documented action that removes the on-device models.
- Open the storage screen. Go to Settings > General > [device] Storage. On an iPhone, the final item is the iPhone’s storage entry; on an iPad, it is the iPad’s storage entry.
- Review the updated categories. Compare the free-space figure and the category list with the values you noted before disabling Apple Intelligence. Apple’s storage article explains the screen and its recommendations at How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad.
You do not need to delete an Apple app, remove photos, erase messages or alter iCloud settings to perform this model-removal step. Those actions affect other data and are not Apple’s documented procedure for removing Apple Intelligence models.
What to do if the menu looks different
Apple’s current support page describes the 27.0 software releases. If your iPhone or iPad runs an earlier release, the control can have a different label or location, and some Apple Intelligence features may not be available in your language or region. Use the Apple Intelligence settings area exposed by your installed software rather than following a screenshot from another release. The important test is that the main Apple Intelligence control is off; an individual feature toggle is not the same action.
How to read the storage result
The number may not equal Apple’s maximum
A device that is eligible for Apple’s “up to 14 GB” group will not necessarily show 14 GB becoming free. The same applies to the “up to 8 GB” and “up to 1.5 GB” figures. Those are maximum requirements by device group, while the storage screen reports the categories and data present on your particular device.
The display can change as categories are recalculated
Apple’s storage documentation notes that what appears in a category can vary and that cached or temporary data might not be included in the displayed usage. Consequently, an unchanged or only partly changed figure does not prove that the model-removal action failed. Use the storage screen as a device-specific report rather than as a meter that must match Apple’s maximum.
Check the list as well as the free-space total
Look for changes in the category list and open large entries for details. Tapping an app in the iPhone or iPad storage view can show additional information. The useful question is whether the device has more available space after the setting change, not whether one category is labeled “Apple Intelligence.” Apple can account for data under broader system or operating-system categories.

Why a category can appear unchanged
Storage categories are accounting views, not a file browser. Cached and temporary data may be omitted, and category totals can be recalculated independently. A small change in the free-space number can therefore coexist with the removal of the models Apple describes. Conversely, a larger change can include unrelated cleanup that happened at the same time. Compare the overall available space and the largest categories, and avoid attributing every byte of movement to one setting.
If the storage is still nearly full
First, return to Settings > General > [device] Storage and inspect Apple’s recommendations and the largest categories. The built-in screen is the appropriate next step because it identifies what is actually consuming space on that device.

Use Apple’s recommendations
Recommendations vary by device. Follow only the action you understand and need. Apple documents two common app choices:
- Offload an app: removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data, so you can reinstall the app later with that data retained.
- Delete an app: removes the app and its related data from the device.
Neither action is required to remove Apple Intelligence models. Use them only when the storage screen shows that apps, rather than system data, are the larger problem. Read the description of each recommendation before accepting it, because offloading and deleting have different consequences.
Inspect photos, messages and other large categories
If those categories dominate the list, Apple Intelligence was not the main source of the storage pressure. Review the category details and Apple’s recommendations before deleting anything. Do not delete random system files: Apple’s documented storage workflow is to use the storage screen, its category details and its recommendations.
Do not assume iCloud changes will free local space immediately
iCloud storage and device storage are different capacity pools. Changing an iCloud plan or deleting cloud content is not the same operation as turning off Apple Intelligence, and it can affect data on other devices. Keep the two tasks separate: disable Apple Intelligence for model removal, then use the local storage screen for device cleanup.
When to stop troubleshooting
If Apple Intelligence is off and the storage page still shows adequate free space, there is no additional model-file command Apple documents for this task. Avoid repeatedly toggling unrelated settings or installing a cleaner utility. If the device remains full, focus on the categories and recommendations that the storage page identifies instead of trying to locate hidden system files.
Turning off all Apple Intelligence versus restricting one feature
The iOS 27 guide includes controls that restrict or turn off some individual Apple Intelligence features. Those controls can reduce a feature’s activity or access, but Apple’s documentation does not establish that restricting one feature removes all on-device models. Choose based on the outcome you need:

Restricting one function can be the better choice when you want to retain other Apple Intelligence capabilities. It is not, however, a storage guarantee. If your only objective is to remove the on-device model files, the documented full-disable action is the relevant one.

Apple’s Apple Intelligence support page covers Mac eligibility and storage requirements, and it links to separate Mac storage help. However, the Apple instructions do not provide one universal, version-independent click path for the Mac storage screen. macOS System Settings labels can change between releases, so do not apply the iPhone path to a Mac.
- Open the Mac’s current System Settings and locate the Apple Intelligence control identified by the installed macOS release.
- Turn off Apple Intelligence to remove the on-device models, as described in Apple’s support article.
- Open the storage view provided by that macOS release and compare available space before and after the change.
Use the labels shown by your Mac rather than a path copied from an older macOS guide. Apple’s published “up to 14 GB” and “up to 8 GB” figures remain maximum requirements for the specified Mac groups, not guaranteed reclaimed amounts. The same version, language and regional limitations apply, so the control may not appear identically on every Mac.
Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro considerations
Apple lists up to 1.5 GB for Apple Watch and up to 14 GB for Apple Vision Pro (M5), with up to 8 GB for other supported Apple Vision Pro models. The support page establishes the storage requirements and the effect of turning off Apple Intelligence, but it does not provide a single iPhone-style storage path for every platform in the material cited here.
On those devices, use the Apple Intelligence control and the platform’s own storage view as labeled in the installed software. Interpret the result the same way: the published number is a maximum requirement, and the actual space shown after removal is device-specific. Do not transfer the iPhone or iPad menu path to a watch or headset.

Looking for a “delete models” button
Apple documents turning off Apple Intelligence as the removal method. You should not expect a separate file-deletion command or a visible folder of model files.
Deleting unrelated content first
Photos, messages and apps may be valuable data. Check the storage categories before removing them. Disable Apple Intelligence first if your objective is specifically to remove its models.
Expecting an exact, instant refund of storage
Apple does not guarantee a fixed reclaimed amount or a fixed time for the storage display to update. Compare the device’s available-space figure and category details rather than treating the published maximum as a promised refund.
Using third-party cleaner software
Apple’s documented procedure uses built-in Settings and storage recommendations. Random cleaners or manual deletion of system files are unnecessary for this task and can create new data or account problems.

Confusing local storage with iCloud
The iPhone or iPad Storage screen reports space on that device. iCloud management is a separate task and should not be presented as a way to delete on-device Apple Intelligence models.
Assuming every supported device has the same requirement
The maximum differs by device group: up to 14 GB for specified newer configurations, up to 8 GB for other supported iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro models, and up to 1.5 GB for Apple Watch. Check your model’s qualification before estimating possible space.
