Deleting a chat is only one part of removing your data from an AI service. History, archived conversations, saved memory, model-improvement activity, connected-app data, and account records use separate controls. Use the provider-specific steps below, clear memory independently, and check retention limits before assuming a conversation is gone everywhere.
Understand the data controls before you delete anything
AI services commonly expose several kinds of stored information. Treating them as one setting is the main reason people believe they deleted data when they only hid it.

- Conversation history: The transcript shown in a sidebar or history list. Deleting it removes the conversation from the account view; archiving normally only hides it.
- Saved memory or personalization: Facts and preferences extracted from chats and stored separately so future responses can use them. Removing the source chat may not remove a separately saved memory.
- Activity and model-improvement data: A provider’s setting for retaining activity or using conversations to improve models. Turning this setting off generally affects future use, not records already stored.
- Connected-app and file data: Information imported from services, projects, libraries, or uploaded files. Deleting a chat may leave the original source or an associated project intact.
- Account and safety records: Billing, security, abuse-prevention, and legal records that may be retained under different rules from chat history.
A complete privacy cleanup therefore has three separate goals: remove visible conversations, clear memories and linked sources, and prevent future retention or model-improvement use. A setting that changes one of those goals is not automatically a solution for the others.

- Identify the account. Check whether you are using a personal account, a work or school account, or a managed team workspace. Administrators can control settings and retention in organizational accounts.
- Export anything you must keep. Claude provides personal exports from its web or Desktop privacy settings, and Google provides an export route for Gemini information. Save the file locally or to an encrypted external drive if you need an offline copy; a drive is optional, not a deletion requirement.
- Record connected sources. Note projects, uploaded files, libraries, and connected apps that supplied information to the assistant. Those sources may need separate deletion or disconnection.
- Choose delete rather than archive. Archive is useful when you want a cleaner sidebar but is not a destruction command.
- Clear memory after identifying what was remembered. If a service shows a memory list, remove the item and then remove the chat in which you supplied it.
- Change future-use settings last. Disable activity retention, personalization, or model-improvement options after you have completed the cleanup so new sessions do not recreate the data.
Take screenshots of settings or note the date of a deletion if you need an internal record. A confirmation in the interface shows that the request was accepted, not that every backend copy has already reached its final retention state.

ChatGPT: delete chats, memories, and future-use data
Delete or archive an individual conversation
- Open the conversation list in ChatGPT.
- Open the conversation’s options menu.
- Choose Delete and confirm. Choose Archive only if you want to hide the conversation while keeping it available.
Archived conversations leave the regular sidebar but remain saved and searchable. A deleted conversation disappears from the account view immediately and cannot be restored.
Delete or archive all conversations
Open Settings > Data controls. Use the controls for archiving all chats or deleting all chats, then confirm the action. Review the choice carefully: deleting all chats is not an archive operation. If you need to preserve only a few conversations, export or copy those first rather than assuming a later recovery is possible.
Remove saved memories separately
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the memories available to your account and remove the entries you no longer want stored.
- Delete the chat where the information was originally shared.
- Review relevant regular and archived chats, Library files, and connected apps for copies of the same information.
Deleting only a conversation does not necessarily delete a saved memory. OpenAI also says that logs of deleted memories may be kept temporarily for safety and debugging, for up to 30 days. If a fact appears in several conversations, removing one source may not remove the others.

The Improve the model for everyone setting controls model-improvement use; it is not a history-deletion command. Turn it off in Settings > Data controls if you do not want eligible future conversations used for that purpose.
For a session that should not appear in history or create or update memories, start a Temporary Chat. Temporary chats are not used to improve models while they remain temporary, although a copy may be retained for safety for up to 30 days. Temporary Chat is therefore a prevention tool, not a way to retroactively erase an ordinary conversation.
Delete the entire ChatGPT account
Use ChatGPT’s account-deletion control only when you intend to close the account permanently. OpenAI states that account data is deleted within 30 days, subject to a limited legal-retention exception and circumstances in which information has already been de-identified or must be retained for security. If an Apple or Google mobile subscription bills separately, cancel that subscription through the relevant app-store account; deleting the ChatGPT account does not cancel it automatically. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces can have organization-specific procedures.
Claude: remove conversations and export first
Export your information
Individual Free, Pro, and Max users can request an export from Settings > Privacy on the Claude website or Claude Desktop. The export includes account information and chat history. The export function is not available in Claude’s iOS or Android apps. In Team and Enterprise plans, export access is limited to the organization’s Primary Owner. Anthropic’s export guidance is dated July 8, 2026, so labels may change as the product evolves.

Delete a conversation on the web
- Open the conversation list.
- Open the menu for the conversation you want to remove.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion.
The conversation disappears from history immediately. Anthropic says it is removed from backend systems within 30 days. Projects, account information, and other associated data remain until you delete those items separately or close the account.
Gemini Apps: manage activity, memory, and connected apps
Delete selected activity or all activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity from Gemini’s web or app settings, or open the Gemini activity page while signed in.
- Choose an individual item, a day, a custom date range, or the option to remove all activity.
- Confirm the deletion and verify that the selected range no longer appears in the activity list.
For personal accounts, Keep Activity is on by default for adults. Gemini’s automatic deletion choices are 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention; the default automatic-deletion period is 18 months. Automatic deletion is not the same as an immediate wipe, so use the manual date-range controls when timing matters.
Turn off future activity retention
In Gemini Apps Activity, turn off Keep Activity. This prevents new activity from being retained under that setting but does not erase previous activity. Google says conversations can remain associated with the account for up to 72 hours after the setting is turned off so the service can operate and collect feedback. Work and school accounts may not expose the control because a Workspace administrator manages it.
Clear Gemini’s past-chat memory
On desktop, open Settings & help > Personal Intelligence and switch off the past-chat memory feature when you do not want Gemini to use prior conversations for personalization. To remove information Gemini already remembered, delete the relevant chats as well. Turning off the feature changes future personalization; it does not by itself remove every historical transcript.

Remove connected-app information
If a memory came from a connected application, delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect that application. Updating or deleting the original source data can take days to affect what Gemini returns, so check again after the source change has propagated. Other Google services can retain their own copies under their own rules, even after Gemini activity is deleted.
Understand the human-review exception
Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data are not deleted when a user deletes activity and may be retained for up to three years. This is an important exception for anyone handling sensitive material: deleting the activity entry does not guarantee that a reviewed copy follows the ordinary account-deletion timeline.
Microsoft Copilot: separate history, memory, and training choices
Clear personalization and memory
Consumer Copilot separates personalization and memory from conversation history. Turning off personalization and memory makes Copilot forget stored memories but leaves old conversations viewable. Delete the history separately when you want those transcripts removed.

Control model-training activity
Training on conversation activity and voice conversations is controlled independently in Copilot’s Privacy settings. Disabling a training choice does not act as a delete command for existing history. Review both the conversation-history control and the training controls if your goal is to limit future use and remove old transcripts.

Microsoft’s privacy-controls page for the older Copilot app points users of the updated web, desktop, and mobile experience to newer guidance. Microsoft says the updated version became available on August 18, 2026. Menu names can therefore differ by app version; follow the labels displayed in your current Copilot interface instead of assuming an older path applies universally.
Do not confuse consumer Copilot with Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft states that prompts, responses, and file contents used in Microsoft 365 apps are not used to train foundation models. That statement concerns Microsoft 365 Copilot and should not be generalized to consumer Copilot’s separate privacy controls. Organizational retention, eDiscovery, and administrator access can still apply in a Microsoft 365 environment.

These windows describe provider-side processing, not a promise that every backup, security record, or independently connected service disappears on the same schedule. Keep the distinction between “hidden from me,” “removed from the active account,” and “purged from backend systems.”
A complete cleanup workflow for sensitive information
- Export: Download the provider’s account or chat export if you need a record. Store it in an encrypted location and remove extra copies you do not need.
- Delete source conversations: Remove individual chats or use the provider’s all-history control. Do not substitute archive.
- Clear memories: Open the memory or personalization page and remove each related entry.
- Inspect secondary locations: Check archived chats, projects, libraries, uploaded files, shared links, and connected apps for duplicates.
- Disconnect sources: Remove integrations that can continue supplying the same personal information.
- Disable future retention: Turn off activity retention, personalization, and model-improvement settings that do not fit your privacy needs.
- Verify: Sign out and back in, search the history and memory views, and confirm that the expected items are absent. A short processing delay does not necessarily indicate failure.
If the service offers separate web and mobile controls, check both. Export and deletion features can differ by platform, as Claude’s mobile apps demonstrate. For a managed account, ask the administrator whether a local deletion request overrides organizational retention.

“I archived the chat, but it still appears in search.”
That is expected behavior for ChatGPT. Archive removes the conversation from the normal sidebar but keeps it saved and searchable. Reopen the conversation’s options menu and choose Delete.
“The assistant still mentions something I deleted.”
Look for a separate saved memory, another conversation containing the same fact, an archived chat, a Library file, or a connected application. Remove the memory and each source independently, then allow time for connected data changes to propagate.

“I turned off activity, but old records remain.”
Keep Activity and similar switches govern future collection. Use the activity page’s manual deletion tools for older records; the switch alone is not retroactive.
“My work account has no delete or activity option.”
Your organization may control retention. Ask the Microsoft, Google Workspace, or other service administrator which policy applies, and avoid placing confidential material into a managed assistant until you understand that policy.

“I deleted the chat but a subscription is still billing.”
Chat deletion and billing are unrelated. For a mobile subscription billed through Apple or Google, cancel it in the corresponding store account. Account deletion also does not automatically cancel an Apple subscription.
“I cannot find an export button.”
Check whether you are in a supported web or desktop interface and whether your plan permits exports. Claude’s individual export is available on the web and Claude Desktop, not its iOS or Android apps; Team and Enterprise access is limited to the Primary Owner.

- Use temporary or history-off sessions for one-time questions when the service offers them.
- Do not paste passwords, authentication codes, financial identifiers, medical records, or confidential business material into a consumer assistant.
- Separate personal and work accounts so an employer or school policy does not unexpectedly govern personal conversations.
- Review memory and connected-app permissions periodically rather than waiting for an unwanted response.
- Keep exports encrypted, limit who can access them, and delete the export when its purpose is finished.
Microsoft’s Copilot Privacy FAQ advises: “You shouldn’t provide any confidential or sensitive personal data that you would not want Microsoft to use for purposes explained in this FAQ and in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.” The same caution is sensible for every consumer AI service, regardless of which deletion controls it provides.

Does deleting an AI chat delete what the assistant remembers?
Not necessarily. ChatGPT saved memories are separate from the source conversation, and Gemini can use past-chat memory. Delete the memory or personalization entry, delete the source chat, and check other chats, files, projects, and connected apps for duplicates.
Is archiving the same as deleting?
No. In ChatGPT, archiving removes a conversation from the regular sidebar but keeps it saved and searchable. Use Delete when you want the conversation removed from the account view and placed into the provider’s deletion process.

What happens when I turn off activity or history?
The setting generally affects future collection. It does not erase old records automatically. Use the service’s manual activity or history deletion controls for existing conversations, then disable future activity.

Why can’t I change these settings on my work or school account?
A Microsoft, Google Workspace, or other organization administrator may manage retention and activity controls. The administrator’s policy can override or limit the controls available to an individual user.
What is the safest order for a complete cleanup?
Export anything you need, delete chats rather than archive them, clear saved memories, inspect files and connected apps, disconnect sources, disable future retention or model-improvement settings, and verify the account after allowing for processing delays.
The Bottom Line
Deleting history, clearing memory, and stopping future use are separate actions. Export first if necessary, remove chats and linked sources, review provider retention windows and account type, then disable the settings that govern new activity. A conversation disappearing from the screen is an important step, but it is not proof that every copy has already been purged.
