To delete your Signal account, use Signal on the phone where you set up the account: open Settings > Account > Delete Account, enter your phone number, and confirm. Signal requires the working primary phone; deleting the desktop app or its data does not close the account.
Delete your Signal account from the primary phone
- Open Signal on the phone where you originally set up the account. Signal says the app must be actively working on that phone for account changes.
- Go to Settings > Account > Delete Account. Menu wording can vary with app versions and platforms; this is the path Signal documents.
- Enter the phone number associated with the account and confirm.
After deletion, Signal says your phone number is no longer recognized as a Signal user. See Signal Support’s Delete Account instructions.

What if you no longer have the original phone?
Signal does not provide an immediate remote deletion route if you cannot use the phone where the account was set up. It says accounts are deleted after 120 days of inactivity; after that, the phone number is no longer recognized as a Signal user. Signal does not state a publication year for this policy on the cited help page.

Account deletion versus removing Signal from a computer
Deleting Signal Desktop’s application data removes Signal messages and other data from that computer, but it leaves the account active on the phone and other linked devices. Signal documents the desktop route as General > Delete application data in Preferences or Settings; labels and uninstall steps vary by operating system. Consult its account and desktop-data guidance for platform-specific details.
Unlinking a computer is a separate action: it disconnects that device without closing the Signal account. Signal’s unlinking instructions describe how to do this from the mobile app.

What account deletion does not erase
Closing your account is different from deleting a message or chat. Ordinary message or chat deletion does not remove the other person’s copy. Signal’s “delete for everyone” feature is a best-effort option for messages sent within the previous 24 hours; it does not guarantee that a message disappears from every recipient’s device. If you want less visibility, not account closure
If your goal is to control who can find you by phone number, manage phone-number privacy settings instead of deleting the account. Signal also provides separate username controls, including an option to delete a username. These settings do not delete your Signal account. See Signal’s phone-number privacy and username guidance.
