To remove a child’s social-media presence, handle three separate tasks: close or delete the online account, submit a written data-erasure request for information the service still holds, and remove the account from the child’s devices. Deleting an app or signing out does not delete the account, while deleting an account through a platform’s menu may not erase every copy held for legal, security or operational reasons.
Start by confirming the child’s age, country, the account holder and your legal authority. Preserve anything the child wants to keep, use the platform’s own deletion control, then send a separate request under applicable data-protection law. Keep confirmations and escalate to the relevant regulator if the service does not answer properly.

Decide what you need removed
People often use “delete” to describe different outcomes. Identify the result before touching the account, because each route has a different scope and proof requirement.

For a complete cleanup, use the account-control route and the formal erasure route, then clean each device separately.

Confirm authority, age and jurisdiction first
Write down the child’s age, country of residence, the country named in the service’s terms, the account username and the email address or phone number attached to it. Age thresholds and privacy rights vary by jurisdiction, and a service may apply different rules to a child who has reached the digital-consent age in that country.
Who may act
Use the precise description “parent or holder of parental responsibility.” Parental responsibility means the legal rights and responsibilities that parents normally have for a child. Being a grandparent, older sibling, step-relative or household member does not by itself establish authority to demand deletion. A platform may ask for evidence of identity and parental responsibility before acting.
Take the child’s capacity and wishes seriously
Data-protection guidance from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says services should consider a child’s capacity and wishes. A child who is mature enough to exercise privacy rights, or who objects to a parent’s request, cannot simply be disregarded. Explain the proposed deletion, what will be lost and whether any material can be exported first. Where the child is capable of making the request, invite them to submit it themselves or to confirm the request with you.

When parents disagree
If people with parental responsibility disagree, do not guess which request the platform must follow. Record the dispute, avoid deleting evidence that may be relevant to a family or safeguarding matter, and obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice. A platform’s customer-support agent cannot decide custody or parental-responsibility disputes.
Preserve what the child wants before closing the account
Deletion can remove material that cannot be recovered. Before starting, ask the child what should be retained and make lawful copies for the family.
- Use the service’s download or export tool for photographs, videos, messages, contact lists, posts and transaction records.
- Record the exact username, account email or phone number, profile URL and any linked login method.
- Take screenshots of the profile, privacy settings, account identifier and any warning about a waiting period or retention.
- Save support-ticket numbers, confirmation emails and the date and time of every request.
- Store the export and screenshots in a restricted folder; they contain personal information and should not be circulated unnecessarily.
Exporting is practical protection for the family, not a universal legal requirement. If the account involves threats, exploitation, self-harm or another urgent safety concern, preserve evidence and contact the appropriate emergency, child-protection or law-enforcement service before deleting anything that investigators may need.

Delete the account through the platform
Menu names differ between web and mobile versions, but the sequence is consistent. Sign in through the child’s account or an authorised parent dashboard; do not impersonate the child or submit inaccurate verification.
- Open account settings. Look for Account, Security, Privacy, Your information, Deactivation or Delete account. Search the service’s help centre if the control is not visible in the app.
- Choose deletion rather than deactivation if the intention is permanent closure. Read the service’s notice for a cancellation or cooling-off period and note the final deletion date if one is stated.
- Complete the requested checks. The service may ask for the current password, a code sent to the account email or phone, government-issued identification or proof that you hold parental responsibility.
- Review linked services. Note whether the account is used to sign in to games, shopping, music, messaging or other services. Deleting the social account may remove those sign-in credentials or purchases.
- Confirm the request. Save the on-screen confirmation, email and reference number. Do not assume that closing the app or seeing a hidden profile proves backend deletion.
- Do not log back in during a waiting period unless the service says that doing so will not cancel deletion. Some services reactivate an account when a user signs in.
Terms such as “deactivated,” “scheduled for deletion” and “deleted” have different meanings. Quote the service’s own status in your records and ask support what remains during the waiting period.
Send a separate written erasure request
Account closure controls the account; a written request addresses personal data that may exist in support systems, backups, analytics, advertising records, device logs or information shared with processors. The ICO says there are no mandatory words, but a clear written request should identify the requester and account, describe the data to erase and ask for a full response within one calendar month.
Use clear wording
Include this official sentence exactly:
I wish to exercise my right of erasure under data protection law.You can send it through the platform’s privacy-request form, the privacy or data-protection email address, or a postal address identified in its privacy notice. Keep a copy of the complete message and any attachments.
Identify the account and the requester
State your full name, relationship to the child, country, contact details, the child’s name and age, username, account email or phone number, profile URL and the date you used the in-app deletion control. Explain whether you are acting as a parent or holder of parental responsibility, and attach only the evidence reasonably needed to verify that claim.

- the profile, biography, avatar, posts, comments, direct messages, photographs, videos and stories;
- account identifiers, login and contact details, address-book uploads and payment or transaction records;
- device identifiers, IP addresses, location records, cookies and other usage logs linked to the child;
- inferred interests, advertising segments, behavioural scores and other profiles built from the child’s activity;
- copies held by processors, contractors or other organisations to which the service disclosed the data.
Ask the organisation to tell you which recipients were notified of the erasure where the law requires that notification. The ICO says that, on request, the organisation should also tell you who received the data.
Understand the response period and verification
The normal ICO guidance is a response within one calendar month. The clock may start when the organisation receives enough information to confirm the requester’s identity and authority, so answer a reasonable verification request promptly. Provide the minimum necessary evidence, redact unrelated details where possible and use the service’s secure upload channel rather than ordinary email when offered.
Know the lawful exceptions
The organisation may retain some information when a law requires it, when it is needed for legal claims, or when another data-protection exemption applies. Security, fraud-prevention, accounting, freedom-of-expression and public-interest rules can affect what is erased. The ICO’s plain-language explanation is: “The organisation should delete your data, unless an exemption in data protection law applies.” Ask the service to identify the specific category of data retained, the legal reason and, where available, the planned retention period. A refusal should explain the applicable exception rather than simply saying that deletion is impossible.

Escalate a refusal or missing response
Give the platform a fair opportunity to correct an incomplete answer before escalating.
- Complain to the platform’s privacy team. Quote the original ticket number, dates, account identifier, the exact data still visible or retained and the remedy you want.
- Keep a chronology. Save sent messages, automated acknowledgements, identity-verification dates, replies and screenshots showing that content remains accessible.
- Ask targeted questions. Request confirmation of what was erased, what remains, why an exception applies, which recipients were notified and whether any appeal route exists.
- Contact the relevant data-protection regulator. In the UK, the ICO says users should complain to the organisation first and may then complain to the ICO if the response is missing or inadequate. In another country, use that country’s supervisory authority and follow its deadline and evidence rules.
A regulator can assess compliance; it may not be able to order the destruction of information that a valid legal exception permits the service to keep. Keep the child’s safety and any court or law-enforcement preservation requirement separate from the privacy complaint.
Google Family Link: a narrow account-deletion example
Google’s rule is specific: “You can only delete your child’s account if you created it, and they’re under 13 or applicable age in your country.” This is not a general rule for every social-media service. It applies to a child account created and managed through Google’s family tools.

Delete from Family Link
- Open Family Link and select the child.
- Open the child’s account settings.
- Choose the option to delete the account and follow the verification prompts.
- Read the final warning and save the confirmation before closing the app.
Google warns that the parent and child lose stored emails, files, calendars, photos, purchases and related access. Export anything needed first. If the account is above the applicable age or was not created by you, the Family Link deletion control may not be available; use the account holder’s controls and the applicable privacy-request process instead.

Google advises removing the child’s account from signed-in Android devices or Chromebooks before deleting it. If the account remains on a device when deletion is completed, the device may lock and require a factory reset. A factory reset erases local content, so back up other accounts and files before using it.

Online deletion and local cleanup are independent. After saving the evidence and completing the platform steps:
- Sign out of the child’s account in the social app and the device’s account-management screen.
- Remove the account from shared browsers, password managers, mail clients and other apps that used the same credentials.
- Clear downloaded media, offline message databases and cached files, then uninstall the app.
- Review browser autofill, saved passwords, notification previews and photo galleries for copies.
- Check family tablets, old phones, game consoles and computers; a forgotten signed-in device can restore access.
- Change a reused password and enable a new sign-in method for any service the child keeps.
Removing a supervised child account from a device removes local account data but leaves the online account available elsewhere. Deleting the online account is a separate action. Device-cleanup software can help locate local traces, but no local utility can erase information held on the platform.

Exact retention periods, deletion dates and age rules must be checked against the service and country involved; there is no universal schedule.
What to do when something goes wrong
The child forgot the password
Use the service’s account-recovery route with the registered email or phone. Do not create a duplicate account or guess security answers. If recovery fails, provide the username, profile URL, previous contact details and proof of authority to the privacy team, then ask for a manual deletion or erasure review.
The platform asks for an identity document
Confirm that the request came through the official app, help centre or privacy address. Ask what information is required, how it will be protected and whether a redacted document or alternative verification is accepted. Send only what is proportionate and retain evidence of submission.
The profile disappeared but search results or messages remain
Record the URLs and screenshots, wait for the service’s stated deletion period, then ask whether the material is cached, held by another account or retained under an exception. A search-engine result, a recipient’s screenshot and a copy in another user’s message history may be outside the original account’s control and require a separate request to the holder.
The child wants the account but a parent wants it gone
Explain the consequences and consider a safer, less destructive measure such as changing privacy settings, removing followers or using parental controls. If the child has sufficient capacity to exercise data rights, the service should consider the child’s wishes and best interests. Obtain legal advice where parental responsibility or custody is contested.
There is immediate danger
Do not wait for a deletion ticket when there is an imminent threat, exploitation, blackmail or self-harm risk. Preserve relevant evidence, report the content through the platform’s safety channel and contact emergency or child-protection services in your country. Deletion can destroy evidence and does not by itself stop someone who has already copied the material.
UK policy context: planned under-16 restrictions
A UK Government fact sheet updated 18 September 2026 describes planned restrictions on social-media access for under-16s from spring 2027. Its model names Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook and X. The fact sheet says parents and children do not need to take action immediately under that proposal. It is a UK policy update, not a universal deletion rule and not a substitute for the account and erasure steps above.
The same fact sheet reports consultation findings that nine in ten parents supported a social-media ban for under-16s and two-thirds of young people agreed that under-16s should not be allowed to use at least some platforms. Those figures describe that consultation; they do not prove that an individual account should be deleted or that a service has erased data.
