Apple’s current deployment guidance allows a custom delay of 1 to 90 days. On iPhone and iPad, that one time-based deferral applies to both ordinary updates and major upgrades. It postpones when the release is offered; it does not permanently block installation or prevent an administrator from enforcing a target version later.
How do I delay iOS updates with Apple device management?
The practical sequence is the same regardless of which MDM service your organization uses, although the names and locations of controls differ between providers. Apple says that each device-management service developer implements these settings differently, so use your provider’s documentation for the exact console workflow (Apple Platform Deployment: Software Update declarative configuration).

- Inventory the devices. Record each iPhone or iPad’s iOS/iPadOS version, enrollment method, and supervision status. These details determine which Apple configuration a device can accept.
- Choose the control that matches your goal. A time-based deferral hides a release for a set number of days. A cadence setting influences which release choices users see. An enforcement setting installs a selected version by a deadline. They are separate controls, even when your MDM places them in one software-update area.
- Create the software-update configuration in the MDM console. In the provider’s device-configuration or profiles area, select its Apple software-update payload. For iOS/iPadOS 17 and later, this may be exposed as a declarative Software Update configuration. For iOS/iPadOS 18 and later, it may also be exposed as the newer Software Update settings configuration.
- Enter the deferral period. Set the supported value from 1 through 90 days. On iPhone and iPad, use the combined period rather than looking for separate “minor” and “major” fields.
- Assign the configuration to a test group first. Use a small set of representative devices with the same enrollment types and iOS/iPadOS versions as the wider fleet. Verify that the release is not offered during the delay and that users can still install an older approved release if your policy permits it.
- Deploy to the production scope. Expand the assignment only after checking device check-in, profile status, and the displayed software-update behavior in the MDM console.
- Document the end date and exceptions. The delay is measured against Apple’s release timing, while any forced-install deadline is a separate policy. Record both so help-desk staff know whether a device is still inside its deferral window or approaching enforcement.
No special appliance, cable, accessory, or repair tool is required. The policy is delivered by the organization’s MDM service to devices already enrolled in management. Apple’s documentation describes the controls and capabilities; it does not prescribe one universal administrator interface.
How long can I defer an iPhone update?
Apple’s current deployment guide allows an organization to specify a custom time-based deferral from 1 to 90 days. The period controls how long the operating-system release is withheld from availability on managed devices after Apple publishes it. The 90-day figure is the documented maximum for this managed delay, not a promise that every MDM exposes the same field or default.

Apple’s older restriction documentation describes a 30-day default before updates become visible to supervised managed devices when that older implementation is used. Administrators can configure a value from 1 to 90 days instead of relying on that default. Treat the 30 days as an implementation default in the older restriction path, not as a universal limit or a requirement for newer configurations (Apple Platform Deployment: Install and enforce software updates for Apple devices).
The timer is a release-availability control. It does not mean that a device may remain on an old version indefinitely: after the selected period, the update or upgrade can become available, and a separate enforcement policy can require installation sooner or later according to the administrator’s deadline.
Does an iOS update deferral delay major upgrades too?
Yes. For iPhone and iPad, Apple’s time-based deferral uses a combined period that delays both software updates and software upgrades. In everyday terms, the same 1–90-day setting can hide a minor iOS release and a new major iOS release while the respective deferral window is active.

Do not copy the macOS model into an iPhone policy. Apple documents separate minor-update and major-upgrade periods for macOS, but the cited iOS/iPadOS settings use one combined period. If your MDM shows separate fields for Apple platforms, confirm that you are editing the iPhone/iPad payload rather than a Mac payload.

Which Apple configuration should an administrator use?
Apple documents two related configuration paths for modern iPhone and iPad fleets. They overlap in purpose but differ in minimum operating-system version, supervision requirements, and the controls they expose.
| Configuration path | Minimum iOS/iPadOS | Supervision | Enrollment methods listed by Apple | Primary function |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Declarative Software Update configuration | iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 or later | Not required | Device Enrollment and Automated Device Enrollment | Enforce a selected target version by a device-local date and time; related update-management declarations can coordinate release behavior. |
| Software Update settings configuration | iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 or later | Required for most settings; Apple lists exceptions for certain enforcement and beta-testing keys | Device Enrollment and Automated Device Enrollment | Configure deferrals, update-choice cadence, and other software-update settings, including the combined 1–90-day period. |
The declarative configuration’s TargetLocalDateTime is an enforcement deadline expressed in the device’s local date and time. It should not be described as a deferral field: it tells the device when installation must be forced if the user has not installed the selected version already (Apple’s declarative configuration guide).
The newer settings configuration includes a Deferrals dictionary with CombinedPeriodInDays, an integer from 1 to 90. Apple says this controls when updates and upgrades become visible after release. It also documents RecommendedCadence values that influence the choices shown to the user. For example, Oldest can keep the device on the older release line while the configured delay elapses (Apple Platform Deployment: Software Update settings declarative configuration).
What should I check before deploying a deferral?
- Operating-system generation: Verify whether a device is on an iOS/iPadOS release that supports the configuration you intend to use. The declarative path starts at version 17; the Software Update settings path starts at version 18.
- Supervision: Determine whether each device is supervised. The iOS 17-and-later declarative Software Update configuration does not require supervision, while most settings in the iOS 18-and-later Software Update settings configuration do.
- Enrollment: Confirm whether the device uses Device Enrollment or Automated Device Enrollment. Apple lists both for the two configuration paths, but other Apple management surfaces can have narrower support.
- MDM capability: Check that your service has implemented the Apple payload or declaration you plan to use. Apple explicitly warns that service developers implement these settings differently.
- Assignment scope: Make sure the profile reaches the intended iPhone and iPad groups and not Macs, Apple TVs, or personally enrolled devices that do not meet the policy’s requirements.
- Release objective: Decide whether you are hiding a release temporarily, controlling which release choices appear, turning automatic downloading or installation on or off, or enforcing a version by a deadline. Those outcomes require different controls.
How do I configure the 1–90-day deferral when my MDM has different menus?
Because there is no Apple-defined universal MDM console, use this provider-neutral procedure and map each step to your service’s labels:

- Open the MDM area for Apple device configurations, profiles, or declarations.
- Create a new iPhone/iPad software-update configuration, or edit the existing one assigned to the relevant smart group.
- Select the deferral settings rather than an enforcement-only declaration. In the iOS/iPadOS 18 settings payload, the field is represented by
DeferralsandCombinedPeriodInDays. - Enter a whole number from 1 to 90. A value outside that range is not a valid Apple setting.
- Save the configuration and assign it to a pilot group. Wait for devices to check in and report a successful profile or declaration status.
- On a pilot iPhone or iPad, open the device’s Software Update screen and confirm that the newly released version is not offered while the window is active. The exact wording can vary with the iOS/iPadOS release and the MDM’s implementation.
- Review the MDM’s compliance and command status. A failed, pending, or unsupported payload means the device is not receiving the policy; it does not prove that Apple ignored a valid deferral.
- Expand the assignment after the pilot behaves as intended, and keep the policy’s start context, selected period, and planned enforcement date in your change record.
If your console offers only a “force update” command, that is not equivalent to a time-based deferral. Ask the service provider whether it supports Apple’s deferral payload or declaration for the device’s enrollment and OS version.
How do cadence settings differ from a deferral?
A deferral answers when may this release become visible? A cadence setting answers which release choices should the user see while the policy is active? Apple’s Software Update settings configuration documents RecommendedCadence values for shaping those choices. Selecting Oldest, for example, can keep users on the older release line during the configured delay.
Cadence does not extend the documented 90-day deferral ceiling and does not create a permanent block. Treat it as a presentation and choice policy alongside, not instead of, the time-based deferral.
Can MDM still force an update during a deferral?
Yes. Apple distinguishes availability deferrals from enforcement. An administrator can specify a target version and an enforcement date; Apple says that enforcement can occur regardless of configured deferrals (Apple Platform Deployment: Install and enforce software updates for Apple devices).

The user may install the selected version before the deadline. If the user has not done so, the device is forced to install it at the specified local time. The local-time behavior matters for a distributed fleet: the same policy can reach its deadline at different moments on devices in different time zones.
For an iPhone or iPad downloading over a mobile network, Apple says the user is prompted to confirm the download. Plan communications and connectivity accordingly; a deferral policy does not guarantee that a forced installation can download immediately over cellular data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do automatic updates behave during and after the delay?
Apple says automatic software updates adhere to time-based deferrals and begin only after the configured delay has passed. During the window, the release is withheld from the managed update experience. Once the window expires, normal automatic-update behavior can proceed unless another policy changes it or an administrator has selected a different target and deadline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Automatic-update behavior and enforcement are separate decisions. You can defer visibility while allowing installation after the window, or combine a deferral with a later target-version deadline. Document the intended sequence so users are not surprised when a release first remains hidden and then becomes mandatory.

What does enrollment type change in Apple Business?
Apple’s Apple Business documentation lists iPhone and iPad deferral support with Automated Device Enrollment. Its capability table lists Device Enrollment deferrals for Mac and Apple Vision Pro, rather than guaranteeing the same iPhone/iPad behavior for every enrollment path. Therefore, do not assume that a user-enrolled iPhone exposes the same deferral controls as an organization-owned device enrolled automatically. Check the current capability table for your exact platform and enrollment combination (Apple Business: Create a Software Update configuration).
This limitation is about Apple’s documented support matrix, not about the physical model of the phone. Two identical iPhones can expose different management controls when one is supervised through Automated Device Enrollment and the other is enrolled through a different method.
Why might a deferral appear not to work?
The update is visible immediately
- Check that the device received the profile or declaration successfully rather than remaining pending.
- Confirm that the value is within 1–90 days and was entered in the iPhone/iPad combined-period field.
- Verify that the device’s iOS/iPadOS version supports the chosen configuration.
- Check whether another profile, declaration, or enforcement command targets the same device.
- Confirm the device’s enrollment method and supervision state against Apple’s requirements.
The profile is rejected or unsupported
- Determine whether the MDM service supports the specific Apple payload or declaration; provider support is not identical across products.
- For the iOS 18 Software Update settings path, verify supervision for settings that require it.
- Use the service’s device-status and configuration-error details to identify an invalid key or an OS-version mismatch.
The device installs despite the deferral
- Look for a target-version enforcement policy and its deadline. Apple allows enforcement regardless of a configured deferral.
- Check whether the user installed the release manually before the delay expired; a deferral controls managed availability, not a rollback mechanism.
- Review whether the device changed enrollment, was removed from the assignment group, or stopped checking in.
Users see inconsistent behavior across the fleet
- Compare iOS/iPadOS versions, supervision, and enrollment methods between a device that honors the policy and one that does not.
- Check time zones and local clocks when comparing enforcement deadlines.
- Confirm that all devices are assigned to the same configuration and that no platform-specific profile is overriding the intended scope.
How should an organization choose a delay?
Apple documents the range, but it does not prescribe one number for every fleet. Choose a period that leaves enough time to validate business-critical apps, accessibility workflows, VPN or authentication behavior, and support documentation before users receive the release. A shorter window gets security and compatibility fixes into circulation sooner; a longer window provides more testing time but keeps devices on the previous release line for longer.
Use a pilot group to establish the organization’s actual validation cycle, then apply the same policy consistently to devices with comparable risk. Keep a separate emergency path for a target-version enforcement policy when a security or compliance deadline outweighs the normal testing schedule.
What is the difference between delaying, guiding, and enforcing an update?
| Policy objective | Apple control described in the documentation | What the user experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Delay release availability | Time-based deferral, 1–90 days; combined for iPhone and iPad updates and upgrades | The release is not offered until the deferral period has elapsed. |
| Guide release choices | RecommendedCadence in the Software Update settings configuration |
The update choices shown can favor an older release line while the policy applies. |
| Require a selected version | Target version with a local-date-and-time enforcement deadline | The user may install early; otherwise installation is forced at the deadline, even if a deferral exists. |
Keeping these objectives separate prevents a common configuration error: using an enforcement command when the intention was merely to give testers more time, or expecting a cadence recommendation to block a release permanently.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist for a safe rollout
- List every supported iOS/iPadOS version in the fleet and identify devices below the minimum for the selected configuration.
- Export or record supervision and enrollment status before assigning the policy.
- Set the combined period deliberately and record why that number was chosen.
- Test both a minor update and a major upgrade on representative iPhones and iPads, because the iPhone/iPad deferral covers both.
- Verify the MDM reports successful delivery, not merely that a profile was saved in the console.
- Publish the expected user experience and the date on which the release may appear.
- Keep enforcement policies visibly separate from deferral policies, with local deadlines documented.
- Monitor devices that do not check in, are unenrolled, or move between assignment groups.
- Recheck Apple’s deployment and Apple Business capability tables when your MDM, enrollment model, or iOS/iPadOS baseline changes.
Key takeaways
- Use an MDM-delivered Apple software-update policy; no physical product is needed.
- The documented custom deferral is 1–90 days.
- On iPhone and iPad, the period delays both updates and major upgrades.
- Declarative Software Update configuration starts at iOS/iPadOS 17 and does not require supervision; Software Update settings starts at iOS/iPadOS 18 and requires supervision for most settings.
- Deferral postpones availability. A target version and enforcement date can still require installation, regardless of the deferral.
