Defrost a manual-defrost chest freezer when frost reaches the threshold in its owner’s manual, then clean and dry the interior before restoring power. Whirlpool recommends defrosting at about 1/4 inch (6 mm) of frost; GE’s guidance for its manual-defrost chest freezers is 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Turn the freezer off and disconnect it before you start, and use only a plastic scraper on frost that has loosened.
How often should you defrost and clean a chest freezer?
Use frost thickness as your cue rather than relying on a fixed calendar interval. Whirlpool recommends defrosting and cleaning when frost is about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick. GE’s instructions for its manual-defrost chest freezers say to defrost when frost reaches 1/4 to 1/2 inch. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a universal threshold; follow the owner’s manual for your make and model.

Whirlpool also recommends a thorough cleaning at least once a year. High humidity can make frost build up faster, so your freezer may need defrosting more often. Neither manufacturer’s cited support page gives a publication date for its recommendation.

What to prepare before defrosting
- Check the owner’s manual for the correct way to switch off your model and whether it has a drain, plug, or adapter.
- Arrange a cooler, another refrigerator or freezer, or another suitable cold-storage place for the food. A Whirlpool manual also suggests wrapping food in several layers of newspaper and covering it with a blanket, but its statement that food will stay frozen for several hours is not a guarantee for every room, load, or food item.
- Set out towels and a container to catch meltwater. Use a drain hose or adapter only if your manual says your model has one and explains how to use it.
- Have a plastic scraper, a clean sponge or soft cloth, and the cleaning solution permitted by your manual ready.
How to defrost and clean the freezer
- Switch off and disconnect power. Use the control procedure specified in your manual, then unplug the freezer or otherwise disconnect its power as directed.
- Remove the food. Move it to the cold-storage location you prepared. Work efficiently, and avoid treating any stated holding time as a guarantee that food will remain safely frozen.
- Manage the water. Place towels or a container where water will collect. Open or connect the drain only as your model’s instructions specify. GE says only some chest freezers have a front drain and hose adapter; its guidance does not recommend using a garden hose with that adapter.
- Let frost soften. Leave the lid open. GE says pans of hot water can help speed defrosting. Keep the water contained and follow your manual’s cautions.
- Remove loose frost gently. Use a plastic scraper only on frost that has loosened. Do not chip or pry at ice with an ice pick, knife, or other sharp-pointed tool, which could damage the freezer.
- Wipe away meltwater and wash the interior. Use a clean sponge or soft cloth and the solution allowed by your manual. The cited Whirlpool guide permits mild detergent in warm water or a baking-soda solution. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaners, and check the manual’s cautions for plastic parts.
- Rinse if directed, then dry thoroughly. Follow the manual on rinsing. Wipe the interior dry, then refit drain plugs, caps, or other parts securely.
- Restore operation. Reconnect power and return the temperature control to its normal setting as instructed. Return food according to your freezer’s instructions.
Why drain instructions vary by model
Chest freezers do not all have the same drain arrangement. GE notes that a front drain and hose adapter are present on some models, not all. Check your model’s manual before looking for a drain or trying to attach a hose; do not force a plug, cap, or adapter.

The right interval depends on frost accumulation and conditions such as humidity. If the model’s manual gives a different threshold or a different drain or cleaning procedure, use that model-specific guidance.
