How to Defend Gaps and Exposed Flanks in Battleplan

The reliable way to defend a gap in Battleplan is to prevent a clean breakthrough before the mission begins: place units during deployment so they receive fortifications, anchor the line on towns and forests, keep a thin infantry screen rather than overstretching, and hold mobile reserves behind it. When a penetration develops, mines can slow approaches to key objectives and fighter-bombers can punish exposed, unfortified enemy formations that enter friendly territory.

Those recommendations come from the developer’s defence, zone-order, combined-arms and air-support diaries. They describe intended mechanics and useful decisions, not a guarantee that one layout will succeed in every mission, difficulty setting or game version.

Set the defensive line during deployment

Use the pre-mission phase to gain fortifications

The most important defensive decision happens before the battle starts. The developer states that units gain fortifications when the mission begins and recommends positioning them during deployment instead of moving them into place after the start. A unit that begins in the intended position therefore starts with the defensive preparation the game provides, while a unit moved later may have to fight before it is properly established. Read the deployment map as the first defensive phase, not as a short staging screen.

Before confirming the mission, identify the objectives that must be held, the roads leading toward them, nearby towns or forests, and any open ground attackers are likely to cross. Place the units that will form the initial line at those anchors. Keep enough space behind the line for reserves to move without blocking the frontline, and avoid scattering every available unit forward simply to make the map look covered.

Why moving after the start is risky

Moving a unit after the mission begins may be necessary, but it is a repair action rather than the preferred setup. A post-start move can leave an approach temporarily open, pull a defender away from terrain that improves its performance, or expose a reserve before it is needed. The developer’s deployment guidance does not promise that a unit moved later will receive the same preparation, so treat the initial placement as the moment to establish the line.

Anchor positions on useful terrain

Towns and forests

Towns and forests are described as defensive terrain: they improve defence and firepower while slowing movement. Their value is not only the protection they provide to a unit occupying them. They also shape the route an attacker must take. The developer recommends placing units at the edges of these areas so an enemy approaching the position has to cross open ground before reaching the defender.

An edge position gives the defender a clear approach lane and preserves the terrain as a defensive anchor. If the unit is placed too far forward, it may surrender the benefit of the town or forest. If it is placed too deep inside, the attacker may reach the terrain with less exposure on the way in. Use the edge that faces the expected approach, then keep a second position or reserve behind it if the objective is especially important.

Swamps, wetlands and beaches

Swamps, wetlands and beaches impose broad penalties. They should not be treated as interchangeable with towns or forests simply because they slow movement. A penalty-heavy area may hinder the defender as well as the attacker and may reduce the firepower or defensive advantages available in a proper anchor. Use the developer’s terrain distinction when deciding where to make the main stand: towns and forests are recommended defensive anchors, while the other listed terrain types carry general penalties rather than the same defensive benefits.

Terrain What the developer describes Practical placement
Towns Improves defence and firepower; slows movement Place defenders on the edge facing the likely approach so attackers cross open ground.
Forests Improves defence and firepower; slows movement Use the forward edge as an anchor and keep support or reserves behind it.
Swamps Imposes broad penalties Do not assume it provides the same defensive role as a town or forest.
Wetlands Imposes broad penalties Assess the penalty before making it the centre of the line.
Beaches Imposes broad penalties Avoid treating the beach as an equivalent substitute for a defensive anchor.

Terrain also helps decide where a gap is most dangerous. A break in the line on open ground gives an attacker a direct route toward the objective, while a break beside a town or forest may still leave a defender able to contest the approach. That distinction is a reason to keep reserves near the roads and depots that connect your anchors, rather than distributing them evenly over every part of the map.

Use a thin frontline and a real reserve

Why a thin line can be stronger

The defence diary acknowledges that you may not have enough troops to defend the entire frontage. Its recommendation is a thin infantry line that prevents cautious enemy advances, backed by mobile units that can respond where the enemy actually breaks through. This is a coverage decision, not an instruction to abandon every sector. The line must still touch the objectives and approaches that matter; it simply should not consume the force needed to repair a breach.

A thin line also makes the enemy reveal its main effort. If every unit is fixed in a continuous forward screen, there may be nothing available when the attacker concentrates against one sector. A lighter infantry presence can delay or discourage a slow advance while preserving armor for the moment when local strength matters.

Position armor behind the infantry

Place armor behind the initial infantry positions and assign it Reserves or Counterattack orders, as recommended by the developer. The rear position gives the armor room to move toward a developing breach without occupying the same frontage as the infantry. It also keeps the mobile force from being committed before the direction of the attack is clear.

Reserve placement should be tied to the mission’s geography. The developer specifically recommends keeping reserves near supply depots and on roads leading to objectives that must be held. These locations shorten the route to the sectors that cannot be lost and reduce the chance that a reserve spends the critical part of the battle crossing irrelevant ground.

Decide what the reserve is for

A reserve is not simply a second frontline. Give it a job that matches the likely failure: counterattack an enemy that enters a gap, reinforce an anchor that is being outnumbered, or block the road to a must-hold objective. If the reserve is pushed forward without a clear trigger, it can become part of the same thin line and leave no mobile response behind it. Keep the reserve behind the threatened sector until the breach or concentration is identifiable.

Choose zone orders by their actual behaviour

Balanced Hold

In Regimental Plan zones, Balanced Hold advances only when its flanks are secure and the unit is not outnumbered. That makes it the better fit when preserving a defensive line is more important than taking ground. A Balanced Hold zone can still move forward, but its stated conditions discourage an advance that would leave one side exposed or send a unit into a locally weaker fight.

Before using Balanced Hold to close a gap, check both adjacent sectors. A unit may have a clear route ahead and still be unable to advance under the order if one flank is open or local numbers are unfavourable. That restraint is useful on a defensive map: the order’s conditions align movement with keeping the line connected.

Seize Ground

Seize Ground pushes forward regardless of being outnumbered or overextending, according to the zone-order diary. It is therefore an aggressive choice for taking territory, not a safe default for maintaining a thin defensive screen. If the priority is to keep a flank closed, an unconditional advance can pull a unit away from its anchor and open or worsen the gap. That consequence is a practical inference from the order’s stated behaviour, not a separate developer guarantee.

Order Stated movement behaviour Use when defending gaps
Balanced Hold Advances only when flanks are secure and the unit is not outnumbered. Use when preserving connected positions and avoiding a locally weak advance are priorities.
Seize Ground Pushes forward even when outnumbered or overextending. Use cautiously near a defensive gap; its forward movement can pull a unit off the line.

Orders should support the shape of the defence. A frontline unit whose first responsibility is to stop an approach should not be given an order that routinely trades its flank security for forward distance. Conversely, a reserve released for a deliberate counterattack may need a more forceful order once the defensive line is no longer the immediate concern.

Cover the approaches to objectives

Lay mines where the breach will matter

The combined-arms diary recommends planting mines on roads toward objectives that must be held and in front of fortifications. Mines therefore work as approach control: they cover the route an enemy is most likely to use to reach the position, rather than replacing the troops that defend it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During preparation, trace the roads that connect the enemy’s likely approach to the objective. Prioritize the section in front of the fortification or the point where a road enters the final defensive area. This placement gives the minefield a clear relationship to the position it protects. Do not spend the obstacle on a remote route if the must-hold objective can be reached by an uncovered road.

Use mines to buy response time

A minefield is most valuable when it gives the thin infantry line and reserve time to react. It does not remove the need for a defender on the objective, and the available material does not establish a numeric delay, damage value or guaranteed stopping effect. Treat the mine placement as one layer in the defence: infantry hold the anchor, armor responds from behind it, and the obstacle covers the approach between them.

Use air support against exposed penetrations

When fighter-bombers are appropriate

The air-support diary recommends using fighter-bombers against exposed, unfortified enemy formations that enter friendly territory. That is a specific target condition. An enemy unit that has crossed into your side of the line without fortification is exposed in a way that makes it a suitable air-support target, especially when it is moving through the open ground your terrain setup forced it to cross.

Air support should complement, not substitute for, the reserve. A strike can address the enemy formation that created the penetration, while the reserve remains responsible for restoring the ground connection or protecting the objective. The source material does not establish a universal strike success rate or a rule that air support alone closes every gap.

Connect air support to the ground plan

Use the ground picture to select the target: an exposed formation inside friendly territory, an unfortified unit beyond the defensive edge, or the force pressing toward a road protected by mines. Avoid treating every enemy unit as equally urgent. The immediate threat is the formation whose position makes the flank or objective vulnerable; the infantry line, reserve and minefield then address the physical gap it opened.

A practical breach-response sequence

The following sequence applies the developer’s mechanics without assuming hidden statistics or a guaranteed outcome.

  1. Confirm the location of the gap. Identify which anchor, road or must-hold objective is no longer connected to the defensive line.
  2. Check the neighbouring flanks. If a unit is still under Balanced Hold, remember that its advance depends on secure flanks and not being outnumbered; do not expect it to make an unconditional rush into the opening.
  3. Release the nearest reserve. Use the armor positioned behind the infantry, preferably from a road or depot near the threatened objective, rather than pulling every frontline unit out of place.
  4. Cover the approach. If mines were placed on the road toward the objective or in front of the fortification, let that obstacle form part of the response while the reserve moves.
  5. Strike the exposed formation. When the enemy unit is unfortified and has entered friendly territory, assign fighter-bomber support to that penetration as recommended in the air-support guidance.
  6. Re-establish the line before advancing. Once the immediate opening is contained, return attention to connected flanks and objective access. Avoid turning a local repair into an overextended pursuit.

This sequence separates three jobs that are easy to confuse: infantry provide presence across the frontage, armor supplies mobility at the breach, and mines and air support make the approach or penetrating formation easier to contest. Keeping those jobs distinct prevents the reserve from being spent before the line actually needs it.

Defensive options compared

Each defensive choice solves a different problem. The table below compares the options using the distinctions made in the developer diaries.

Defensive question Option emphasised by the developer What it contributes
When should positions be prepared? During deployment Units gain fortifications when the mission starts.
What terrain should anchor the line? Towns and forests They improve defence and firepower while slowing movement; edge placement exposes attackers to open ground.
How should limited troops cover a wide front? Thin infantry line plus reserves The line checks cautious advances while armor responds to a breakthrough.
Where should reserves wait? Near supply depots and roads to must-hold objectives The mobile response is positioned near the sectors that matter most.
Which zone order protects a connected line? Balanced Hold It advances only with secure flanks and without being outnumbered.
Which order risks pulling a defender forward? Seize Ground It advances despite being outnumbered or overextending.
How should roads be covered? Mines on roads toward must-hold objectives and in front of fortifications The approach is obstructed before it reaches the defended position.
What should air support target? Exposed, unfortified enemy formations entering friendly territory It attacks the penetration rather than serving as a general replacement for ground defence.

Common defensive mistakes and corrections

Filling every metre of frontage

Problem: Every available unit is placed on the first line, leaving no armor behind it when the enemy concentrates.

Correction: Accept the thin-line model described in the defence diary. Keep infantry presence where it prevents a cautious advance, then hold armor under Reserves or Counterattack behind the line.

Moving units into position after the battle starts

Problem: The intended defensive line is treated as something to build during the opening turns.

Correction: Use deployment to place the units first. The developer says fortifications are gained when the mission starts, so the pre-start layout is part of the defensive advantage.

Using a penalty terrain as if it were a town

Problem: A swamp, wetland or beach is selected simply because it slows movement.

Correction: Distinguish broad penalties from the defensive and firepower benefits described for towns and forests. Do not assume all difficult terrain protects a line in the same way.

Giving a line-holding zone an unconditional advance order

Problem: Seize Ground is used beside an exposed flank because forward movement looks like the fastest way to close the gap.

Correction: Consider Balanced Hold when flank security and local numbers are the priority. Seize Ground’s stated willingness to advance while outnumbered or overextended can make a defensive opening worse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Placing mines without linking them to an objective

Problem: Obstacles are placed away from the roads that lead to the position that must survive.

Correction: Follow the combined-arms recommendation: mine roads toward must-hold objectives and the ground in front of fortifications.

Calling air support on a protected target while ignoring a penetration

Problem: Fighter-bombers are treated as general-purpose attacks rather than a response to an exposed entry into friendly territory.

Correction: Prioritize the exposed, unfortified enemy formation that has crossed the defensive edge, then let the ground reserve address the position it threatened.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limits of the published guidance

The developer diaries explain intended mechanics and recommendations, but they do not publish a numeric reserve ratio, terrain modifier, mine delay, air-support damage figure or universal success rate. The correct reserve size therefore depends on the map’s frontage, objective locations and the units available in that mission; assigning a fixed percentage would go beyond the documented evidence.

Likewise, these tactics are not presented as guarantees for every mission, difficulty level or game version. A deployment that works on a compact map may leave a long road network uncovered on another. Recheck the actual terrain, flank security and local numbers before committing a zone order, and treat the published behaviour as the basis for a decision rather than a promise of an automatic result.

For the underlying mechanics, see the developer’s Defence diary, Zone Orders diary, Combined Arms diary and Air Support diary.
