What actually damages the enemies in Hell Is Us
Nacon’s official FAQ describes the supernatural creatures in Hell Is Us as enemies that modern weapons cannot defeat. The game instead provides specially forged swords, spears and axes for fighting them. That distinction matters: the reliable answer is not to search for a conventional firearm matchup, but to learn the forged melee system and its Lymbic attacks.

Reviews commonly refer to these recurring creatures as Hollow Walkers. PC Gamer’s 2026 review describes five broad enemy types, but that count is a reviewer’s classification rather than an official weakness chart. The available evidence does not establish a complete, authoritative list of names, elemental vulnerabilities or one universal weapon counter for each type. Treat the broad combat loop below as the dependable method, not as a substitute for a type-by-type chart that has not been verified.

Before committing to a combo, inspect the target. Some Hollow Walker variants carry bulbous Lymbic growths on their bodies. Those growths function as protection: the main body cannot take meaningful damage until the attached growths have been destroyed.

- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
- Look for the bulbs. Make a quick visual check as the encounter begins. A normal-looking body and a growth-covered variant should not be approached in exactly the same way.
- Change your target priority. When growths are present, attack them rather than repeatedly hitting the central body. Your first objective is to remove the protection, not to force damage through it.
- Reassess after each growth breaks. The fight’s damage window changes once the shielding tissue is gone. Move your attention to the exposed enemy only then.
- Use the opening safely. A broken growth or stagger can create the moment for a charged Lymbic strike, but do not spend all stamina reaching it. Leave enough to evade the next attack.
This is the important difference between an enemy type and a variant. A type describes the broad creature category; the growth mechanic is a behavior that appears on some versions. Do not assume every member of a category has the same protection, and do not assume removing a growth is an elemental weakness.
A repeatable combat sequence
The following sequence works as a practical default when you do not know a creature’s exact behavior. It combines the official weapon premise with the practical advice reported by reviews and a June 2026 fan combat guide.
1. Read the approach and attack pattern
Watch the enemy for a few seconds before spending resources. Note whether it closes distance quickly, swings repeatedly, attacks from range, or shares the arena with other creatures. This tells you whether stamina must be reserved for a long dodge, whether a single timed parry is realistic, and when the drone can safely operate.
2. Remove Lymbic protection first
If you see bulbous growths, circle so you can reach them without standing in the creature’s main attack line. Short attacks are preferable while you are learning the pattern. Once the growths are destroyed, return to the body only after confirming that the protection has actually ended.
3. Build Lymbic energy with ordinary attacks
The June 2026 Hellisus.org guide recommends using regular attacks to build Lymbic energy instead of burning the resource whenever it becomes available. Ordinary hits also let you learn the enemy’s recovery timing. Stop the string early if the target is about to retaliate; an incomplete combo that preserves stamina is better than a full animation that leaves you trapped.
4. Spend the stronger attack on a real opening
Use the stronger Lymbic attack when the target is vulnerable or staggered. A stagger, a recovery animation, or a moment immediately after a growth is destroyed is more valuable than an arbitrary opportunity between two attacks. If the enemy is still moving aggressively, hold the energy and keep positioning instead.
5. Defend before the stamina bar is empty
Do not treat stamina as spare capacity. Keep enough for the next defensive action, especially when fighting a creature with a multi-hit sequence or when several enemies can reach you. The fan guide recommends dodging multi-hit, group and unblockable attacks; a nearly empty bar can turn a successful offensive exchange into a hit you cannot escape.

6. Reset the distance after your punish
Once the charged attack or short combo ends, move back into a position where you can see the whole enemy. Staying beside a recovering target for one extra hit is a common way to be clipped by a delayed swing or a second enemy. Re-establishing space also gives the drone a safer line to contribute.

Choosing your defensive response
Dodge and parry are tactical options rather than mandatory stages of progression. GamesRadar+ reports that its reviewer could rely on dodging and direct attacks, with occasional blocking, and did not find an enemy type that required mastery of parrying. That makes a dodge-focused style a legitimate solution for players who cannot reproduce a tight parry timing.
| Response | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dodge | Multi-hit strings, attacks that cannot be blocked, groups, and unfamiliar patterns | Consumes stamina and may move you away from the ideal attack angle |
| Parry | A familiar single strike when you can identify its timing | Requires precision; a miss can leave you in the hitbox |
| Block | An occasional fallback when neither a clean dodge nor a confident parry is available | Does not replace reading the pattern or managing stamina |
The safest learning process is to dodge first, observe the recovery, and add parries only against one attack you can recognize. A parry can create a punish opportunity, but the evidence does not support presenting it as the required answer to any named enemy type.
Weapon handling: speed versus impact
GamesRadar+ characterizes dual axes as faster but weaker, while greatswords are slower and hit harder. This is a handling comparison from a reviewer, not a laboratory-tested optimal build. Choose the feel that lets you maintain spacing and stop an attack string before your stamina is exhausted.
| Weapon feel | What it favors | Who may prefer it |
|---|---|---|
| Faster, lighter attacks such as dual axes | Short punish windows, quick repositioning and repeated ordinary hits for energy | Players who prefer mobility and want to disengage quickly |
| Slower, heavier attacks such as greatswords | Fewer committed swings with greater impact when a stagger is clear | Players comfortable waiting for a large opening |
| Other forged melee options, including swords and spears | Learning the range and timing of the weapon you already control | Players who need a reach or animation that suits a particular encounter |
Nacon specifically identifies swords, spears and axes as the forged weapons intended for these creatures. The choice is therefore primarily about range, timing and confidence, not a confirmed elemental matchup. If a weapon feels too slow to recover before the next attack, shorten the combo rather than assuming the enemy is resistant to it.
Using the drone without surrendering control
The drone is a support system, not a replacement for the forged melee weapons. Reviews describe modules that can distract, stun or damage enemies as they become available. Use that support to manufacture a safer melee opportunity.
Distraction and repositioning
When a creature is focused on the drone, use the brief change in attention to reach a Lymbic growth, move behind the target or create distance from a group. Do not assume the distraction will last long enough for an extended combo; treat it as permission for one deliberate action.
Stun and charged attacks
A stun is most valuable when you already have Lymbic energy ready. Position first, trigger the support effect, then deliver the stronger attack during the resulting vulnerability. If the stun does not land, keep your defensive option available rather than chasing the failed setup.
Damage support
Drone damage can help finish a weakened enemy or contribute while you avoid a dangerous pattern, but the available reviews do not establish it as a universal solution. Continue to use melee attacks to build energy and to handle protected variants whose growths must be destroyed.

How to approach different encounter shapes
There is no verified weakness chart for individual types, so adapt to what the enemy is doing rather than to an unsupported label. These encounter shapes cover the practical differences that matter in a fight.
A single close-range Hollow Walker
Keep the creature in view, test one short attack string, and watch the recovery. If it has growths, remove them before extending the combo. Build energy with safe ordinary hits, dodge a committed strike, and use the charged attack as the enemy recovers.
A fast or multi-hit attacker
Prioritize stamina. Dodge the sequence rather than trying to trade through it, and attack only after the final swing has clearly ended. A lighter, faster weapon may feel easier here, but the decisive factor is whether you can stop attacking in time to evade.

A group encounter
Do not lock your attention on one body while another is outside the camera. Use the drone to distract or stun one threat, reposition to create a line of sight, and avoid spending your full stamina bar on a long chase. A charged Lymbic attack is safest after the group has been separated or one target is visibly staggered.
A ranged or artillery-style threat
Close distance only when the path is safe, and use the environment and movement to avoid being pinned while you deal with nearer enemies. The supplied evidence does not verify a unique weapon or elemental counter for a ranged category, so rely on the same sequence: forged weapon, growth check, energy management and a punish during recovery.
A heavily protected variant
Slow the fight down. Locate every visible growth, attack from an angle that keeps the main body readable, and confirm each protection piece has broken before committing your strongest move. If the target remains protected, more body hits will not solve the problem; change the target back to the remaining growth.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to assume about the five enemy types
PC Gamer’s review reports five broad enemy types, but the available material does not verify a complete named taxonomy or individual counters for them. A fan-site search result mentions labels such as Primeval, Feral, Protector, Artillery and Negator, yet the retrieved information does not provide enough verifiable detail to publish those labels as a reliable tactical list.
Accordingly, avoid claims that a particular emotion, weapon element or attack is the universal weakness of one of those names. The documented distinction is narrower and more useful: some variants have Lymbic growths, and those growths must be destroyed before the main body can take damage. Everything else should be learned from the target’s attack pattern and your chosen weapon’s handling.

Common failure modes and fixes
You keep hitting the body and see little or no progress
Stop attacking the center and inspect the creature for bulbous Lymbic growths. If they are present, make them the primary targets. Body damage is not the first step against that variant.
Your Lymbic energy is always empty
Reserve the stronger attack for a vulnerable or staggered target. Use ordinary attacks to build energy, and cancel a string when the enemy is about to retaliate instead of spending the resource simply because it is available.
You are defeated while trying to finish a combo
Shorten the punish and preserve stamina for the next dodge. The damage you lose by ending early is less costly than being caught in recovery with no defensive action available.

Stop treating parry as a requirement. Use dodge against multi-hit, group and unblockable attacks, and rely on direct attacks with occasional blocking as you learn the encounter. Add a parry later against one familiar single strike if you want the counter opportunity.
The drone seems ineffective
Use it for a specific purpose: distraction to reposition, a stun to support a charged attack, or damage while you avoid a dangerous pattern. It is support for the melee plan, not a universal replacement for destroying growths and exposing the body.
A pre-fight checklist
- Confirm that you have a forged melee weapon equipped: sword, spear or axe.
- Look for Lymbic growths before targeting the main body.
- Decide whether the incoming attack is better answered by a dodge, a practiced parry or a brief block.
- Leave enough stamina for the next defensive action.
- Build Lymbic energy with ordinary attacks rather than spending it indiscriminately.
- Keep the drone ready for distraction, stun or support damage.
- Use the stronger Lymbic attack only during a visible vulnerability or stagger.
- After the punish, reset your position and check the rest of the arena.
How to defeat enemies when you do not know their type
You do not need a complete enemy encyclopedia to make progress. Start with the observable state: protected or exposed, single target or group, close-range or ranged, predictable or multi-hit. That information determines your immediate action more reliably than an unverified name. Use the forged weapon system, remove growths when present, build energy through controlled ordinary attacks, and spend it during a safe opening. If your timing is inconsistent, make dodging the foundation and add parries only where they become comfortable.
This approach explains why a single weakness chart would be misleading. The most consequential behavior documented for these enemies is a variant protection mechanic, while the broader reviews emphasize complementary melee, Lymbic and drone systems. Learning to recognize those states gives you a method that remains useful even when an encounter does not match a remembered category.
