How to Declare Gold and Diamond Jewellery When Travelling Internationally

There is no single international customs rule for gold or diamond jewellery. Whether you must declare a piece depends on the countries on your route, whether it is an existing personal item or a new purchase, and how that country classifies it. Check the official customs rules for departure, arrival, transit and return; keep proof of ownership or purchase accessible; and declare the item whenever the applicable authority requires it.

Start by identifying what you are carrying and where it is going

Before travelling, check the customs guidance for every country where you will enter or leave customs territory. A transit stop can matter if you pass through customs, and the return journey may raise a different question from the outbound leg. Do not assume that a rule for gold bullion also covers finished gold jewellery, or that a rule for gold automatically covers diamonds.

  • Existing personal jewellery: an item you owned before the trip may be treated differently from a purchase, but there is no universal personal-property exemption.
  • New purchase or gift: the destination may treat it as goods brought into the country, even if you plan to wear it.
  • Worn versus packed: some rules distinguish bona fide personal worn jewellery from other jewellery. Wearing an item does not create a worldwide exemption.
  • Finished jewellery versus bullion or other gold products: customs forms may ask about gold products broadly, while separate thresholds apply to particular forms of bullion.
  • Personal versus non-personal quantity: multiple pieces, commercial quantities or non-personal gold can require procedures beyond ordinary passenger baggage clearance.
  • Value and proof: thresholds may apply to different categories, and an authority may ask for an invoice or other evidence of value or ownership.

These distinctions are reflected in the official examples below; they are not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your actual itinerary.

How official rules differ by destination

Jurisdiction What the official guidance says What that means for a traveller
Japan Japan Customs says arriving passengers must indicate gold bullion or gold products on the declaration of accompanied and unaccompanied articles, regardless of quantity, weight, value, or whether the item is new or used. Separately, more than 1 kg of gold bullion at 90% or greater purity triggers an additional means-of-payment declaration. Goods beyond passenger-baggage clearance may require general import procedures. Do not assume worn gold jewellery is exempt from the gold-product question. The bullion threshold is an additional declaration rule, not a general value threshold for all jewellery.
South Korea Korea Customs Service advises declaring high-priced articles, including jewellery and precious metals, before departure if they will be brought back into Korea. Items not declared may be subject to duties on return. Non-personal precious metals such as gold bars require a formal export declaration. If you already own a valuable piece and are taking it out of Korea with plans to return with it, check the departure declaration process and keep a record of the declaration.
France The French Directorate General of Customs and Indirect Taxes says money, coins and gold exceeding €10,000 must be declared when entering or leaving French territory. Goods brought back from a trip are a separate customs question and may require declaration and payment of duties or taxes above the applicable thresholds. The guidance page was updated 30 June 2026. Do not treat €10,000 as a universal jewellery-value allowance. The stated rule concerns money, coins and gold; goods brought back are assessed separately under the relevant goods rules.
Dubai / UAE Dubai Customs’ 2025 Services Guide says passengers must declare goods valued over AED 3,000; under that guide, personal belongings below AED 3,000 do not require declaration. For imported goods, it says the declared value should be supported by an invoice. This threshold comes from the 2025 Dubai guide. Confirm the current rule and how it applies to your item before travelling.
Sri Lanka Sri Lanka Customs says bona fide personal worn jewellery, as determined by its Director General, is not subject to customs taxation. Other jewellery should be declared on arrival. Gold in forms other than bona fide personal jewellery requires declaration and a valid import control licence before arrival. Do not extend the treatment for bona fide personal worn jewellery to unworn items, new purchases or bullion gold.
Qatar Qatar’s General Authority of Customs requires a declaration on entry or exit for cash, precious jewellery, precious metals or precious stones worth QAR 50,000 or more, or the equivalent in another currency. The published threshold expressly includes precious jewellery, metals and stones and applies in both directions of travel.

These examples show why a figure or exemption must be read in context: the country, direction of travel, type of property and category named in the rule all matter. They do not establish rules for countries not listed here.

Prepare records before you leave

Keep original purchase receipts or invoices accessible when you have them. French customs says a traveller should be able to present an invoice or receipt at a customs check involving goods brought back; Dubai Customs says an invoice should support the value declared for imported goods.

For jewellery you owned before the trip, a dated purchase record, insurance schedule, appraisal or clear photographs may help explain ownership and identity. The official guidance cited here does not establish that any of these records is universally required or guaranteed to be accepted. Keep relevant records together and easy to reach; an organizer is merely a convenience, not proof of ownership.

Use this checklist for each leg of the trip

  1. List every country and customs crossing. Include departure, arrival, any transit where you pass through customs, and the return journey.
  2. Describe each item accurately. Note whether it is gold or diamond jewellery, another gold product, or bullion; whether you owned it before travel or acquired it during the trip; and whether it will be worn or packed.
  3. Check the relevant authority’s current guidance. Look for the declaration form or channel, applicable value or weight thresholds, and any distinction between personal and non-personal goods.
  4. Gather supporting records. Carry available receipts or invoices and, for pre-owned items, any existing records that help identify them. Do not assume a particular document replaces a required customs declaration.
  5. Ask customs before departure if the case is unclear. This is especially important for a high-value item, a new purchase, several pieces, bullion or other non-personal gold, or an item you will take out and bring back.
  6. Complete the required declaration accurately. Answer the form’s actual questions. Do not apply a threshold for cash, coins or bullion to finished jewellery unless the authority’s guidance says that category is covered.

When a passenger declaration may not be enough

Some items can fall outside ordinary passenger-baggage clearance. Japan Customs says goods beyond that scope may need general import procedures. Korea Customs Service says non-personal precious metals such as gold bars require a formal export declaration. Sri Lanka Customs requires a valid import control licence before arrival for gold in forms other than bona fide personal jewellery. If an item is commercial, non-personal, unusually valuable or otherwise outside the ordinary passenger case, confirm the process with the relevant customs authority before travelling.
