Wait for credible reviews if your current phone still meets your needs and is receiving security updates. You can then judge whether the new model’s improvements matter to you and compare its actual purchase terms with other options. Buying at launch can make sense if your current phone is failing, unsupported, or preventing you from doing something important—or if the new model’s specific benefits and a verified offer justify the cost.
First decide whether you need a replacement now
Start with your current phone, not the new model’s launch presentation. Persistent performance problems, a failing battery or screen, lost security support, or an important task your phone cannot handle may make replacement urgent. If the problem is repairable, compare repair, trade-in, and replacement costs before deciding. Consumer Reports’ cell phone buying guide treats these as factors to weigh rather than a single rule for every owner.

If the phone remains reliable, supported, and adequate, waiting is an option—not an obligation. A phone that is inconvenient today may still be worth replacing promptly if the inconvenience matters enough to you.
Decide what the new phone would improve for you
Write down the changes you would actually use, such as a better camera for the photos you take, a display that suits your needs, longer battery life in your own routine, more performance for a demanding task, or software features you want. Compare those priorities with what the exact new model offers and with the phone you already own.

Generational changes can be modest, so “new” does not automatically mean “worth upgrading.” Consumer Reports’ guide discusses incremental improvements and provides a way to compare phones and ratings. A previous-generation model may also be worth considering if it meets your needs at a better overall transaction cost.
What to look for in reviews and owner reports
Check whether the review evidence matches the phone and your priorities
Look for hands-on testing of the exact model, and check which hardware and software were reviewed, what the reviewer tested, and how the findings relate to your use. A camera assessment, for example, is more useful when it explains the kinds of scenes or conditions tested than when it repeats launch claims. Review timing varies: DXOMARK says availability of a reviewable device, reader interest, product innovation, and editorial priorities can affect when it reviews a product.

Early reviews can help you assess a new phone, but they cannot establish every long-term behavior. Treat them as evidence about the tests actually performed, not as a guarantee that no later issue will emerge.

Once a device reaches more users, repeated reports may help identify a pattern in software behavior or a particular problem. Give more weight to consistent, specific accounts than to an isolated post, and distinguish a report from a confirmed cause or fix. A patch may address a reported issue, but whether it does depends on the model and the problem.

There is no established general defect rate showing that launch units are more likely to fail. Claims about early bugs should be treated as model-specific unless reliable evidence supports a broader conclusion. An older Android Authority article on waiting after launch offers one editorial perspective on early reports and possible later offers; it does not establish a universal defect pattern or discount schedule.
Compare the full purchase, not just the launch price
Before buying, compare the actual terms for the exact phone, seller, and region. Include the price after any trade-in, financing conditions, items included, delivery timing, and the return policy. A headline offer may not be the best deal if its trade-in valuation or other conditions do not suit you.

Waiting may give you more reviews and additional offers to consider, but there is no dependable general price-drop percentage or schedule established here. Do not assume that waiting will save money; compare the real offers available when you are ready to buy.

Check support for the exact model
Look up the manufacturer’s stated security and operating-system support commitment for the specific model, then consider how long you expect to keep it. A longer stated commitment can matter more if you keep phones for years; a shorter ownership horizon may make other factors more important. Policies and delivery can differ, so do not infer a universal minimum support period.

The Federal Trade Commission’s February 2018 discussion of mobile security updates describes update delivery as a complex process. It is regulatory context, not a current support promise for any particular phone. Use this decision checklist
- Need now: Is your current phone unreliable, unsupported, or inadequate for a task that matters?
- Useful change: Can you name specific improvements in the new model that you expect to use?
- Evidence: Have hands-on reviews tested the exact model in ways relevant to you, and are owner reports consistent rather than isolated?
- Ownership horizon: Does the exact model’s stated update support fit how long you expect to keep it?
- Total cost: Have you compared the actual price, trade-in, financing, included items, delivery, and return terms?
- Timing: Is immediate availability worth more to you than having additional reviews and owner reports?
One Android Authority reader poll illustrates how preferences can differ: among 1,047 votes in a poll embedded in Megan Ellis’s April 6, 2025 article, 17% said they buy a smartphone shortly after launch, 74% said they wait for reviews, and 9% said it depends on contract renewal.
