There is no single Aeroplan credit card, and the announced increase does not apply to every card. The clearly specified change is for the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card: its annual fee rises from $599 to $799. American Express says the new fee applies at the first annual-fee billing date after January 12, 2027, and to fees charged on or after that date. Check your renewal notice and card terms for the amount you will actually pay.
To decide whether it is worth paying, estimate the value of benefits you expect to use, subtract your renewal fee, and compare the result with a lower-fee card and your realistic alternative. Do not count a benefit at face value if you would need to spend more or change your plans to use it.

Start with the fee you will actually be charged
The Amex Aeroplan Reserve fee is moving from $599 to $799, an increase of $200. American Express says the $799 fee applies at your first annual-fee billing date after January 12, 2027, and to annual fees charged on or after that date. Your renewal date and issuer notice determine when the change affects you.

Use this as a decision aid, not as a claim that every benefit has a fixed cash value:
Estimated net value = personal annual value of benefits you expect to use − annual fee

Make the estimate using your own travel plans and spending. For a benefit that reduces a cost, count only what it saves you on a purchase or redemption you would otherwise make. If the Reserve’s additional benefits you personally use do not justify the extra $200 compared with your previous fee, that is a reason to reconsider the card at renewal.

Air Canada’s September 29, 2026 announcement describes changes to its Canadian Aeroplan credit card portfolio, beginning January 12, 2027 unless a different date is specified. The benefits below are portfolio-level descriptions; confirm eligibility and restrictions for your particular card.

Air Canada says other existing benefits remain unchanged, including free first checked bags and priority boarding for eligible cards. Include those only if they apply to your card and make a practical difference to your travel. The full portfolio announcement is available from Air Canada.
Value the Reserve’s status credits only if you pursue status
Amex says Reserve cardmembers can earn 1,000 Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) for every $5,000 in eligible purchases, subject to a combined maximum of 25,000 card-earned SQC per Aeroplan member per calendar year. SQC count toward Aeroplan Elite Status qualification; they are not redeemable for Aeroplan rewards. Compare the Reserve with a realistic alternative
A lower annual fee can be a better fit if you will not use the Reserve’s additional benefits. TD’s Canadian listings showed an annual fee of $139 for the Aeroplan Visa Infinite and $599 for the Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege when accessed October 3, 2026. - The fee at your next renewal, not only the amount you paid last year.
- Credits you can use without changing your spending or buying something you do not need.
- How often you redeem Aeroplan points for Air Canada flights, and the likely points saved by the 15% benefit.
- Whether you use airports and qualify for the lounge and priority-security benefits.
- How often you make eligible hotel or car-rental redemptions.
- Relevant earning, insurance, checked-bag and other existing card benefits.
- Status-credit value, but only if you are pursuing status and expect your spending to meet the applicable thresholds.
- The full terms of a lower-fee card and what you would use instead of either card.
Do not treat a welcome offer’s headline value as recurring annual value: an introductory offer does not establish what the card is worth in later years.
Make the decision using your own travel pattern
- Confirm the renewal fee and date. Use your issuer’s notice and card terms; for the Amex Reserve, the stated increase is to $799 at the first annual-fee billing date after January 12, 2027.
- List the benefits you expect to use. Leave out benefits you would not qualify for, cannot use, or would only use by spending more than planned.
- Estimate savings from likely trips. Include points saved on Air Canada flight rewards and any eligible travel, hotel or rental benefit that fits a booking you expect to make.
- Subtract the actual annual fee. Treat uncertain or conditional benefits conservatively rather than assigning them their maximum advertised value.
- Compare the result with another card and with no card change. Decide whether the benefits you personally gain justify both the total fee and, for an existing Reserve cardmember, the incremental $200.
Air Canada Vice President of Loyalty and Product Scott O’Leary said the refresh is intended to offer benefits that fit the way cardholders travel. That is the issuer’s stated intent, not evidence of the savings a particular cardholder will realize.
