Check the live challenge requirements, reward and expiry first, then compare the candidate with your current starter, bench options and realistic alternatives under the correct game version.
Start with the job your squad needs
An attractive overall rating is not proof that an SBC player belongs in your team. Begin by naming the job the card must perform: for example, a ball-winning central midfielder, a wide forward who attacks space, a centre-back who defends transitions or a goalkeeper suited to your preferred build-up. Then identify the concrete weakness in your current squad that this job should address.

Write the need in a sentence you can test: “I need a right-sided midfielder who can cover ground for 90 minutes,” or “I need a centre-back who can defend high without weakening my chemistry.” If you cannot describe the role and the problem, you are judging the card by reputation or rating rather than fit.
Define the minutes and position
Decide whether the item is intended for your starting XI, a regular substitute, a rotation role or a specialist used in certain tactics. A card that is excellent for 20 minutes may be poor value if you need a 90-minute starter, while a versatile substitute can be useful even when its headline attributes are not best in class.

Check every position and usable role shown on the item. A player may have a high rating but no practical place in the formation you play. Do not assume that a card works in every tactic simply because it can be moved to a nominally similar position.
Connect the need to attributes
Choose the attributes that matter for the job before looking at the card. For a defensive midfielder, you might examine defensive awareness, standing tackle, interceptions, strength, stamina and passing under pressure. For a striker, finishing, attacking positioning, acceleration, composure and the ability to receive the ball in your preferred attacks may matter more than an isolated sprint-speed number.
This is a relevance test, not a universal ranking. An attribute matters only in the situations in which you will ask the player to use it. Compare the candidate with the player currently occupying that role and with the alternatives you could realistically obtain.
Read PlayStyles as part of the role
EA describes PlayStyles as abilities that make players perform differently. They can affect abilities, team strategy and player roles, so read them alongside the attributes rather than treating them as decorative badges. A PlayStyle is valuable when it supports the actions you repeatedly ask that player to perform.
Match PlayStyles to your tactics
- For a defender who steps out, prioritize PlayStyles that support interceptions, tackling or physical duels you actually attempt.
- For a possession midfielder, look for PlayStyles that improve the passing, control or movement patterns used by your build-up.
- For a forward who attacks behind the line, assess whether the card’s movement and finishing-related abilities fit your chance creation.
- For a substitute, value a PlayStyle that changes a specific match state, such as protecting a lead or adding pace late in games.
Do not count PlayStyles in isolation. Two cards can have the same number of them but produce very different results because the relevant effects, positions and attributes differ. EA also states that PlayStyles do not directly change chemistry, so do not treat a desirable PlayStyle as a chemistry solution.
Check chemistry and the correct game version
Chemistry is part of the card’s practical value, but the rules change between versions. Use the chemistry display in the current game and the current official guidance rather than importing a rule from an older edition.
FC 26 Chemistry Styles
EA’s FC 26 launch update changed Chemistry Style boosts from the previous 4/8/12 model to a 3/6/9-point model. The update also introduced trade-offs for pace-heavy boosts and put more emphasis in other styles on attributes such as Composure, Reactions and Stamina. When comparing an SBC card, inspect the boosted attributes that result from the Chemistry Style you would actually use, not a generic maximum.

A small raw-attribute advantage can disappear after the two items receive different boosts, while a card with stronger composure, reactions or stamina may be more reliable across a full match. The in-game item screen is the authority for the exact effect in your edition.
Do not carry FIFA 23 rules into FC 26
EA’s FIFA 23 chemistry update described a system in which a player could earn up to three chemistry points through shared nationality or region, league and club, while positional links and overall Squad Chemistry had been removed. Those are historical FIFA 23 mechanics, not a complete guide to FC 26. They are useful only as a warning: an old chemistry explanation can make a current SBC assessment wrong.

Check the card in your actual XI
Place the candidate into the formation, manager setup and positions you use. Then inspect the chemistry result and any role restrictions. A card that looks perfect in a detached comparison can lose value if inserting it forces several other starters out of their preferred positions or reduces the chemistry of a more important player.
Inspect the live SBC before spending anything
Open Ultimate Team’s Squad Building Challenges area, select the player challenge and read the challenge screen in full. Requirements, rewards and expiry are live details; never rely on a remembered version of the challenge or a third-party summary.
Record every requirement
EA’s current SBC help explains that requirements can include:
- Squad Rating
- Chemistry
- Player Quality
- Leagues
- Nations
- Clubs
The challenge may also be a player SBC, an upgrade SBC, a puzzle SBC, a repeatable SBC or part of a multi-challenge group. Read whether the displayed objective requires one squad or several, whether it is repeatable, and what each completed segment awards.
Check the reward and expiry
Confirm the exact player item, any additional packs or items, and the challenge’s expiry time on the live screen. A player can be a good fit yet a poor decision if you cannot complete the required squads before the deadline or if the reward is less useful than another active challenge. Expiry is especially important for multi-challenge groups: completing one segment does not make the remaining requirements disappear.
Use the challenge preview, not assumptions
Try different combinations of player items in the submission screen before you commit. EA advises reviewing the requirements, reward, expiry and your Club or SBC Storage, then comparing the items exchanged with the reward. Use that preview to find a solution that meets the rules while preserving players you may need elsewhere.
Price the opportunity cost of submitted items
An SBC costs more than the coins or untradeable fodder you notice first. Every submitted player item is removed permanently. EA states that submitted items cannot be restored by EA Advisors, so treat the confirmation screen as irreversible.
Audit your Club and SBC Storage
- Open the SBC submission screen and list every player item currently placed in the squad.
- Check your Club and SBC Storage for duplicates, low-use players and items reserved for another objective.
- Identify any starter, substitute, evolution candidate or unique league-and-nation link among the proposed submissions.
- Remove items that you may need for an upcoming objective, a different challenge group or your normal match squad.
- Rebuild the solution with the least painful combination of items, then verify the resulting rating and chemistry again.
Do not label an item “fodder” merely because you are not using it today. A high-rated card may be your only inexpensive solution to a future rating requirement; a lower-rated card may be the link that lets several squads meet chemistry.
Check the Transfer Market before buying
If the preview is short of eligible players, check the current Transfer Market prices and availability before purchasing. Prices and supply move, and the live SBC may expire before a planned purchase is useful. Compare the cost of buying a missing item with the value of keeping the untradeables you would otherwise submit.

Do not assign a precise “coins per upgrade” threshold to every SBC. No official statistic establishes a universal percentage improvement or a fixed value for squad fit. Your decision depends on the players you own, the role you need and the alternatives available at that moment.

Make a side-by-side comparison with three reference points: the current starter, the best bench option and the realistic alternative you could obtain without this SBC. This prevents an SBC card from appearing better simply because it is compared with an outdated or hypothetical player.

Judge the size of the upgrade
Describe the improvement in match terms. “This card has a higher rating” is not enough; “it gives me the stamina and defensive coverage my current midfielder lacks” is testable. Consider how often the weakness appears, whether the candidate fixes it without creating a new weakness and whether the benefit remains after chemistry and Chemistry Style adjustments.
Include the bench and future use
A starter upgrade is not the only legitimate outcome. A card can be worthwhile as a reliable substitute, a second-team starter for objectives or a flexible option that covers several positions. Conversely, a card that will sit unused because your current starter already performs the role may not justify consuming scarce items.
A practical decision sequence
Step 1: State the squad problem
Write the position, role, formation and weakness in one line. If the line is vague, stop and identify a real need before evaluating the challenge.
Step 2: Verify usable positions and roles
Check the candidate’s positions and role information on the item, then place it in your intended formation. Reject a card that cannot perform the assignment without forcing an unacceptable tactical compromise.
Step 3: Inspect role-specific attributes
Compare the attributes that govern your use case with those of your current starter and alternatives. Include stamina, composure, reactions, weak foot and physical traits when they affect the role.
Step 4: Read PlayStyles in context
Mark the abilities that directly support your tactics. Ignore attractive but irrelevant PlayStyles; they should not outweigh a poor fit for the job.
Step 5: Apply current chemistry rules
Use the live squad screen and the correct edition’s guidance. In FC 26, account for the 3/6/9 Chemistry Style model and its trade-offs. Do not use FIFA 23 chemistry assumptions or unverified future mechanics.

Step 6: Preview every SBC squad
Open each required segment, enter candidate submissions and test multiple combinations. Record the exact requirements, reward and expiry shown in the challenge.
Step 7: Protect irreplaceable items
Review Club and SBC Storage, then remove any player needed for your starting XI, objectives, links or another planned challenge. Check the Transfer Market before buying replacements.
Step 8: Compare the complete exchange
Set the candidate’s role improvement against the players, coins and flexibility surrendered. Include additional rewards in the comparison, but do not assign value to a reward you would not use.
Step 9: Choose a conditional outcome
Complete the SBC when the player fills a genuine role, the improvement is material for your squad and the permanent cost is acceptable. Skip or wait when the upgrade is marginal, the card does not fit your tactics or the submission consumes items with more important uses.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Chasing overall rating
Problem: You assume the highest-rated card must improve the team.
Correction: Compare role-specific attributes, PlayStyles, chemistry and formation use with the player you would replace.
Submitting the first solution
Problem: You accept the first squad that meets the requirements and lose useful items.
Correction: Try several combinations, inspect Club and SBC Storage and preserve unique links or players reserved for other objectives.

Problem: You start a multi-squad challenge without enough time or resources to finish it.

Using old chemistry advice
Problem: You apply FIFA 23 rules or the previous Chemistry Style model to FC 26.
Correction: Verify the current in-game display and use FC 26’s 3/6/9 boost guidance, including the stated trade-offs.

Assuming future features are live
Problem: You plan around an announced feature without confirming how the released game implements it.
Correction: Treat pre-launch announcements as plans until the current game shows the mechanic and its requirements.
What the FC 27 announcement means for this method
EA’s FC 27 FUT Deep Dive, published before its announced 18 September 2026 launch, said traditional puzzle SBCs would remain while streamlined SBCs were planned for most Player and Upgrade SBCs. The described design lets players select eligible items toward a score, submit duplicates, make partial progress and use more flexible requirements. EA also announced all-year Role++ familiarity for special items in primary and secondary positions.
Those statements describe a pre-launch design announcement. Verify the released FC 27 menus, scoring rules, duplicate handling and Role++ behavior in the game you are playing before treating them as current mechanics. The underlying decision remains the same: identify the job, inspect the live requirements and reward, compare the complete cost and protect items you cannot replace.
When to complete, wait or skip
Complete it now
- The candidate is your clear starter or a high-use substitute for a role your squad lacks.
- The attributes and PlayStyles support your formation and instructions.
- The item maintains acceptable chemistry under the current version’s rules.
- You can meet every live requirement without sacrificing players needed elsewhere.
- The reward and expiry make the exchange useful at this point in your squad’s development.
Wait and reassess
- You need to check the Transfer Market or gather more eligible items.
- The player would improve the team, but the challenge expires later and your current squad is functional.
- You are unsure whether the card will start, substitute or simply sit unused.
- The game’s version-specific chemistry or announced mechanics have changed and the live menus need verification.
Skip it
- The card has no role in your formation or duplicates a player you already rely on.
- The improvement is mainly an overall-rating increase with no meaningful role benefit.
- Completing it would consume a starter, unique link or scarce high-rated item.
- You would need to buy expensive players for a challenge whose reward you would not use.
Final checklist before pressing Submit
- Have I named the exact role and weakness this player addresses?
- Can the item occupy the position and role I actually use?
- Did I compare the relevant attributes and PlayStyles with my current starter and alternatives?
- Did I check chemistry and Chemistry Style using the correct game version?
- Did I read every live requirement, reward and expiry?
- Did I test more than one submission combination?
- Did I inspect Club and SBC Storage and protect items needed elsewhere?
- Did I check the Transfer Market before buying missing players?
- Am I comfortable with every submitted item being permanently removed?
If any answer is no, leave the challenge unsubmitted until you can answer it. The best SBC decision is not the card with the loudest rating; it is the exchange that gives your actual squad a useful, repeatable improvement at a cost you knowingly accept.
