A warehouse club membership is worth paying for only when savings on things your household would buy anyway, plus benefits you will actually use, exceed the membership fee and added costs such as extra driving, waste, or spoilage. There is no universal winning club: the answer depends on your local prices, shopping habits, and ability to use bulk purchases.
Calculate the membership’s net annual value
Start with a realistic year of shopping rather than a club’s advertised discounts. Compare unit prices for the same size and similar quality against the store you normally use, and count only quantities your household expects to consume.

Do not count a lower price on something you would not otherwise buy. Also account for differences in brand, quality, package size, taxes, delivery charges, and storage needs. A large package may have a lower unit price but still cost more if part of it goes unused.

These figures describe listed US membership prices, not a guarantee that a nearby club exists or that every service is available at every location. Costco says its double guarantee applies to all membership levels, including a refund of membership cost subject to limitations; read the applicable Costco terms before relying on a refund.
Decide whether a rewards-tier upgrade pays for itself
Compare the upgrade’s added fee with the reward you expect to earn on eligible spending, not total spending. For example, Costco Executive costs $65 more per year than Gold Star at the listed prices, and Costco describes a 2% reward on qualified purchases. The break-even calculation is $65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250 in qualified annual purchases. That is a threshold for matching the added fee, not a promise of net savings: exclusions, reward rules, caps if applicable, and whether you can use the reward affect the result. Check the current Costco reward terms before deciding.

Use the same approach for other paid tiers: first establish the extra annual cost, then estimate rewards only on eligible purchases and assign value to additional services only if you would use them. A benefit that replaces a cost you already pay may have value; a service you would not otherwise use does not create savings just because it is included.

There is no reliable universal price ranking for every household. In an AARP comparison of 28 grocery items published September 3, 2026, Sam’s Club had the lowest total among the compared clubs, BJ’s was close behind, and Costco ranked third. That result illustrates how a particular basket can compare; it does not predict your local prices or establish a permanent winner. See AARP’s comparison.

When choosing between available clubs, compare the same repeat purchases and include the practical costs of getting and using them:
- Unit prices: Compare the same quantity and comparable quality for items you already buy. Verify prices in your area rather than applying another shopper’s basket total.
- Location and time: Include the cost of extra driving and the value of time if the club is not on a route you already take.
- Fuel: Multiply the gallons you would buy there anyway by the actual price difference versus your normal convenient station. Kiplinger reported a potential warehouse-club advantage of 5–25 cents per gallon in March 2026, but local prices vary by place and date; check nearby pumps rather than assuming that range applies to you. - Rewards and service terms: Check eligible purchases, exclusions, thresholds, availability, and any fees before assigning dollar value to rewards, delivery, pickup, pharmacy, optical, shipping, or other services.
- Storage and consumption: Consider whether you can store the package and use it before it expires or loses quality. A household’s size alone does not reveal how much it can consume or store.
BJ’s states in its FY2025 filing that a representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries can offer savings of up to 25% versus traditional supermarkets. That is the company’s qualified claim about its representative basket, not an independent finding or a saving guaranteed on your shopping list. BJ’s also reports that it is concentrated primarily in the eastern half of the United States, making local access an important part of the comparison. See the FY2025 filing.

Watch for bulk-buying costs that erase savings
A bulk item only saves money if the usable portion costs less than the alternative. Before buying, ask whether the product will be used before it expires, whether you have room to store it, and whether buying more will change what you consume. Food that spoils or goods left unused reduce the value of an apparent discount. Kristin McGrath, an editor and shopping expert at Offers.com, told Kiplinger: “It’s understandable that a lot of people are in a state of mind of stocking up after the past couple years — but don’t let that lead to wasted money and wasted product,” in Kiplinger’s discussion of warehouse-club purchases.
Review the membership before renewing
Keep receipts or a simple running record through a representative shopping period. Track actual savings on comparable planned purchases, rewards received and used, services you used, fuel bought on existing routes, and any waste or extra travel. At renewal, use those figures in the net-value calculation: renew if the membership delivers positive value for your household, downgrade if a lower tier better fits your use, upgrade only if the added benefits justify the extra fee, or cancel if the costs outweigh the value.
