Keep a subscription only when its current value justifies its full renewal cost and you understand how to leave. Audit every recurring charge, include annual renewals, calculate the real yearly price, compare use with alternatives, then check the contract before choosing to keep, pause, downgrade or cancel.
There is no official number of uses or universal cost-per-use limit that makes a subscription worthwhile. Your budget, present need, substitutes, renewal price and contract terms determine the answer.

Start with a complete subscription inventory
Most people underestimate recurring spending because charges are spread across cards, bank accounts and billing intervals. A reliable decision starts with a list, not a guess about which services you remember signing up for.

Review statements and regular-payment records
- Download or review recent bank-account and credit-card statements.
- Open your bank’s regular-payment, recurring-payment or standing-order view if it provides one.
- Search for merchant names you do not immediately recognize and check the merchant’s help or account page before assuming a charge is a subscription.
- Review at least the previous 12 months. A monthly scan can miss an annual renewal that appears only once a year.
- Check every payment method used for subscriptions, including old cards and accounts that remain open.
MoneyHelper advises checking statements and regular-payment information, while consumer-protection guidance also stresses looking for infrequent renewals. An annual plan may have been paid recently even though you have not seen a monthly debit.

Record the facts for each charge
Create a spreadsheet or notebook with one row per subscription. Record:
- Provider and the account or email address used
- Amount and billing interval
- Current full price, not just an introductory price
- Last payment or renewal date
- Next renewal date
- Notice deadline for cancellation
- Minimum term, remaining commitment and any early-exit charge
- Payment method and the place where cancellation must be completed
This inventory gives you a single source of truth. It also exposes subscriptions billed annually, quarterly or at another interval that are easy to overlook.
Convert every charge to its real yearly cost
A low monthly figure can hide a substantial annual commitment. Convert each recurring amount before judging value.
Use a consistent calculation
- Monthly price: multiply by 12.
- Quarterly price: multiply by 4.
- Six-month price: multiply by 2.
- Annual price: use the renewal amount shown in the account or contract.
For example, a service costing £12 per month has a recurring cost of £144 over 12 months if the price does not change. That arithmetic is only an illustration; use your own billing amount and currency.
Include taxes, mandatory add-ons and fees that are part of the amount you must pay. If the provider bills in another currency, use the amount that actually appears on your statement rather than a headline exchange-rate estimate.
Separate the introductory price from the renewal price
Check when a promotional rate ends and what you will pay afterward. The renewal amount, not the sign-up price, is the figure to use in your keep-or-cancel decision. Also look for a price change that takes effect at the next renewal.
MoneyHelper recommends using a budget planner to see where money goes and what cancellation could save. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission likewise advises checking that the renewal price matches your expectation. A discount that expires before you make meaningful use of the service should not be treated as permanent value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAccount for timing
Write the next renewal date and cancellation notice deadline beside the yearly amount. A subscription can be worthwhile for another month but not for another full year if an annual renewal is about to occur. If you need time to decide, set a calendar reminder before the notice deadline rather than waiting for the renewal email.

Judge value by current use and need
Cost alone cannot decide the question. A costly service that solves an important problem every week may be better value than a cheap service you rarely open.
Ask when you last used it
Look at your actual activity, not your intention to use the service someday. Consider:
- When did you last log in, watch, read, create, learn or order?
- How often have you used it during the last three months?
- Did you use the service enough to complete the task for which you subscribed?
- Is use likely to continue during the next billing period?
A service that has not been used since sign-up needs a strong, specific reason to remain active. A service used routinely for a current need has a stronger case, even if its cost per individual use is not the lowest available.

Identify the need it meets now
Describe the benefit in one sentence, such as access to a work tool, a recurring lesson, a communication channel or entertainment you regularly choose. If you cannot identify a present need, the subscription is being retained mainly out of habit or fear of losing access.
Separate a current need from a possible future need. If you only expect to need the service later, check whether you can subscribe again when that need arrives, whether your data can be exported, and whether cancellation has a meaningful lock-in consequence.
Compare realistic alternatives
Check whether an included service, a free tier, a lower-cost plan, a library or workplace benefit, or a one-off purchase already solves the same problem. Compare the features you actually use rather than every feature in the marketing description.
Do not assume that the cheapest option is automatically better. An alternative that lacks a function you need may create replacement costs or wasted time. The useful comparison is the annual cost and practical result for your situation.

You can divide the yearly cost by the number of times you expect to use a service to make its trade-off visible. This is a personal budgeting aid, not an official pass/fail formula. The cited consumer guidance does not set a universal number of uses or a maximum acceptable cost per use.

For an essential service, reliability, security or access to important work may matter more than frequency. For a discretionary service, repeated non-use is a stronger signal to cancel. Make the judgment against your priorities and budget.
Read the renewal and exit terms before deciding
Find the contract or account page that controls renewal. Do not rely only on an email reminder or on the payment date shown by your bank.
Confirm five dates and conditions
- Next renewal date: when the next charge or term begins.
- Notice deadline: how far in advance you must cancel to avoid another term.
- Minimum commitment: whether you are still within an initial or fixed term.
- Cancellation route: the exact website, app, phone or written process required.
- Exit cost: any early-termination fee or remaining balance.
Some annual contracts require advance notice. Missing that deadline can trigger another term even when you no longer use the service. Record the deadline in your calendar with enough time to locate account details and complete the provider’s process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check what happens to access and data
Before cancelling, determine when access ends, whether unused time is refunded, and whether you need to download records or files. These terms affect the practical cost of leaving. Do not assume that deleting an app, removing a card or closing an account automatically ends billing.
Evaluate retention offers carefully
A provider may offer a lower price, a pause or a downgrade when you try to cancel. Consider it only after recalculating the expected use during the new period. MoneyHelper cautions that a retention discount helps only if you will actually use the service. A lower price does not create value for a service that no longer meets a need.
Choose deliberately: keep, change or cancel
Use the information in your inventory to make a decision for each subscription. The following signals keep the choice tied to evidence rather than guilt about money already spent.
| Decision factor | Evidence for keeping | Evidence for cancelling or changing |
|---|---|---|
| Actual use | Regular use during the recent period | Little or no recent use |
| Current need | A clear need is still active | The original need has ended or is only hypothetical |
| Annual cost | Fits the budget at the full renewal price | Creates pressure or exceeds the value you receive |
| Alternatives | No realistic substitute provides the required result | An included, lower-cost or one-off option covers the actual need |
| Contract status | Terms are understood and the next renewal is intentional | Another term would begin without a deliberate choice |
| Plan fit | Current tier matches the features you use | A pause or downgrade would cover the expected use |
Do not let money already paid determine the next decision. That payment is a sunk cost; the relevant question is whether the next billing period is worth its price under the current terms.
Cancel safely, step by step
- Open the provider’s official account or billing page. Use the cancellation method specified in the terms. If the provider requires a phone call or written request, follow that route rather than merely deleting the app.
- Review the final screen or message. Confirm the effective cancellation date, whether access continues until the paid-through date, and whether another charge is scheduled.
- Submit the cancellation request. Save the date, time, method and the name or reference number of any representative.
- Obtain written confirmation. Keep the email, web confirmation, chat transcript or letter. If the provider does not supply confirmation, write down what happened and retain any supporting screenshots or statement entries.
- Check the account after submission. Look for a status such as cancelled, scheduled to end or not set to renew. A successful payment-method change is not proof that the contract ended.
- Monitor later statements. Inspect the next statement and the statement covering the former renewal date. Keep the records until you are confident no further charge is due.
If you are close to a notice deadline, contact the provider immediately and ask what date controls cancellation. Do not infer the answer from the date a bank payment is processed.

Payment cancellation is not always contract cancellation
Stopping a payment channel can prevent money moving through that channel, but it may not end the underlying agreement or erase an amount you owe. The result depends on the payment method, contract and local law.
Direct Debits and standing orders in the UK
MoneyHelper explains that cancelling a Direct Debit does not necessarily cancel the contract. You may still owe money under the agreement, so contact the company to confirm the contract status and any balance. A standing order is also a bank instruction; stopping it does not, by itself, prove that the service has been cancelled.
Recurring card payments
The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority says that cancelling a recurring card payment does not remove responsibility for money owed under a contract. Contact the provider first, follow its cancellation process and keep the evidence. If an unwanted payment still appears, speak with the card issuer about the available process.
U.S. guidance
The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau distinguishes cancelling an ongoing subscription from merely changing the way it is paid. A replacement card or a blocked payment may not settle the contract. Follow the merchant’s cancellation instructions and check the account status.
Terminology, deadlines and consumer rights differ by country, payment type and contract. If you are unsure, ask both the provider and your bank or card issuer what remains payable under local rules. Do not treat a payment block as a universal cancellation method.
What to do if charges continue
Check whether the charge was actually after cancellation
Compare the transaction date with the effective cancellation date and any paid-through period. A final charge can be valid if cancellation took effect after the renewal or if the contract required notice. Use the confirmation and terms to establish what happened.
Contact the provider with your records
Send the cancellation date, confirmation reference and the continuing transaction details. Ask for a written explanation and, where appropriate, a refund. Keep copies of every message and note the response date.

Ask the payment provider about a dispute
The FTC advises U.S. consumers to retain cancellation requests and notes, check statements after cancellation and dispute a continuing charge with the card issuer. That is U.S.-specific guidance, not a guarantee of the same result in every jurisdiction. Outside the United States, ask your card issuer or bank which dispute, chargeback or unauthorized-payment procedure applies.
Best Value
Handle unauthorized charges separately
If you never authorized the subscription or the charge does not match any agreement, tell the payment provider promptly and preserve the statement and correspondence. Unauthorized-payment rules and reporting windows vary, so follow the instructions supplied by your bank or card issuer.
Use a yearly review to prevent subscription creep
Make the audit a routine rather than a one-time cleanup. Choose a month before your largest annual renewals and repeat the statement review.
- Scan the previous 12 months of bank and card statements.
- Check regular-payment listings and identify new recurring merchants.
- Update each subscription’s full renewal price and next deadline.
- Remove services that no longer meet a current need.
- Set reminders before notice deadlines for subscriptions you are still considering.
- After every cancellation, verify the next statement.
A calendar reminder is especially useful for annual contracts because the charge may be absent from 11 months of statements. Keep the inventory where you can update it when a price or plan changes.

A 2026 U.K. government policy announcement estimated 155 million active subscriptions in the United Kingdom and said nearly 10 million were believed to be unwanted. It also estimated that consumers could save around £400 million per year from the proposed government crackdown. These are government estimates associated with that policy announcement, not a measured probability that any particular person has an unwanted subscription and not a guaranteed saving for an individual.
MoneyHelper’s consumer guidance, updated 11 August 2026, summarizes the practical test in plain language: “If you don’t use it, don’t pay for it.” Apply that statement to the next renewal decision, while still checking whether a contract, notice period or outstanding balance changes the mechanics of cancellation.
Keep legal and policy information current
Subscription rules can change. A 2024 FTC announcement described adoption of a final Click-to-Cancel rule and noted that the final version dropped an annual-reminder requirement that had appeared in the proposal. That announcement alone does not establish the rule’s current status, so do not assume a particular requirement is presently in force without checking current official information for your jurisdiction.
For a personal decision, rely first on the live terms of your contract and the current guidance from your country’s consumer-protection agency, bank and card issuer. The sources used here include U.K. MoneyHelper and FCA guidance and U.S. FTC and CFPB guidance; their terminology and remedies are not interchangeable.
A concise decision checklist
- Have I found every recurring charge, including annual renewals?
- What is the full cost over the next year at the current and renewal prices?
- When did I last use the service, and what need does it meet now?
- Is an included, lower-cost or one-off alternative adequate?
- What are the renewal date, notice deadline, minimum term and exit cost?
- Would a pause, downgrade or retention offer still provide real value?
- Have I followed the provider’s cancellation route rather than only stopping a payment?
- Do I have written confirmation and a reminder to inspect later statements?
If the answers show regular use, a clear present need, an affordable renewal price and terms you accept, keep the subscription intentionally. If not, cancel or change it through the provider’s process, preserve proof and verify that billing has stopped.
