Set a breakpoint on the executable line just before the Selenium action or assertion you want to investigate, then start the test in your IDE’s debug mode. When execution pauses, inspect the variables, call stack, page and element state; step through the next WebDriver command to see where the behavior diverges. Use that pause to find the cause—not as a fix for a timing problem.
Set a breakpoint and step through the test
- Open the test in an IDE that supports the project’s programming language and test runner.
- Set a breakpoint on an executable line immediately before, or at, the action or assertion under investigation. Choose a point where the inputs and page state are still useful to inspect.
- Start the test with the IDE’s debug command, not its ordinary run command. The specific menu item and keyboard shortcut vary by IDE and language.
- When execution suspends, inspect local variables, the call stack, the current test step and the browser. Step over a command to observe its result; step into a helper or application code if its implementation matters; resume to see what follows.
- Once you have a hypothesis, rerun the test without depending on the breakpoint pause. A debugger changes timing, so passing only while paused can point to a synchronization issue rather than a fix.
IntelliJ IDEA’s Selenium guidance describes setting a breakpoint, starting a debug session and inspecting suspended execution in the Debug tool window. Selenium also lists IDE options rather than prescribing one universal debugger: JetBrains’ Selenium debugging guide and Selenium documentation.
What to inspect when execution stops
Find the failure boundary
Identify the last WebDriver command that completed and the next one that failed. Check the values passed to it, the locator being used, and whether the test is on the expected page or in the expected frame. For an element-related failure, inspect whether the target is present and displayed at that moment.
Check whether the page is ready for the next command
A completed navigation does not necessarily mean a JavaScript-driven application has finished changing the page. Selenium explains that waiting for a page-load readyState does not guarantee that later dynamic elements have appeared or become displayed. After an interaction that adds an element or reveals a control, investigate whether the next command runs before that state is ready. Selenium identifies poor synchronization as its most common error source in its troubleshooting guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a breakpoint to observe, not to synchronize
A breakpoint suspends the test process so you can inspect its execution state. It does not make browser behavior deterministic. If pausing makes an intermittent failure disappear, treat that as a clue: the extra time may be allowing the page to catch up. Confirm by adding a wait for the specific state the next command needs, then run again without the debugger.
Choose a wait for the condition you need
Selenium describes an explicit wait as polling a condition until it succeeds or the timeout expires. Prefer a condition that matches the next action—for example, presence when locating an element, or visibility when interacting with a control that must be displayed. The Selenium waiting strategies page explains the available wait approaches.

| Wait approach | Scope | When it helps | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Implicit wait | Session-wide setting for element location | When a general element-location wait is intentionally suitable for the test suite | Selenium warns against combining implicit and explicit waits because resulting timeout behavior can be unpredictable. |
| Explicit wait | A particular condition and timeout | When the next command depends on a specific state, such as an element becoming visible | Inspect the condition, timeout and any ignored exceptions; avoid layering it with an implicit wait. |
| Fixed sleep | A fixed pause at one point | As a temporary diagnostic experiment to check whether allowing more time changes the symptom | It does not check readiness and can be brittle as a lasting fix when the time required varies. |
Keep the suite’s synchronization strategy understandable. If an explicit wait is timing out, inspect what condition it is polling and whether the page can reach that condition in the current page, frame and test state.
Separate test, browser and driver problems
- Reproduce and compare. If the same WebDriver operation behaves differently in different browsers, compare the command across browsers. The difference can help investigate whether the issue is browser- or driver-specific rather than in the test logic.
- Turn on diagnostic logging when needed. Selenium’s logging guide lists Java
FINEand PythonDEBUGfor detailed debugging information. Configuration differs by binding; use the instructions for the language in your project: Selenium logging. - Use the evidence at the failure boundary. Match the failed command and its inputs against the browser state and logs. A breakpoint is most useful for inspecting live state locally; logs and diagnostic output are practical when a failure occurs unattended or is difficult to reproduce. This is a workflow distinction, not a measured IDE-versus-CI comparison.
Common breakpoint-debugging problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The failure vanishes while debugging | Whether the next element or JavaScript-driven page state was ready only after the debugger pause | Replace reliance on the pause with an explicit wait for the required state, then rerun normally. |
| An element lookup or interaction fails intermittently | The locator, current page or frame, and whether the element is present or displayed before the command | Correct any state or locator mismatch and wait for the condition the next action requires. |
| An explicit wait expires | The awaited condition, timeout, page state and any ignored exceptions | Verify that the condition is attainable in this test state and that the test is in the intended page or frame. |
| Timeouts seem longer or less predictable after adding waits | Whether implicit and explicit waits are both configured | Choose a clear strategy; Selenium cautions against mixing the two. |
| The same operation differs between browsers | Whether the command and test state are comparable in each browser | Compare browser behavior and enable detailed Selenium logging to investigate a driver or command issue. |
| The failure occurs only in CI or cannot be reproduced locally | Which command completed last and what diagnostic output is available from the run | Use logs and explicit diagnostic output to narrow down the failing step; an interactive breakpoint requires a suspended local debug session. |

Does setting a breakpoint fix a flaky Selenium test?
No. It helps expose execution state; if the pause changes the outcome, investigate synchronization and rerun with an appropriate wait.
