The phone needs Android USB debugging, Firefox’s separate Remote Debugging via USB setting, and a data-capable USB connection; the computer needs adb, but not the full Android Studio SDK. Android 11 or later also supports Mozilla’s wireless-debugging route.
What you need before connecting
- Firefox on the computer and Firefox for Android on the device.
adbinstalled on the computer. Mozilla says the full Android Studio SDK is not required.- For USB: a cable that carries data, not just power, and a computer port compatible with your phone.
- For wireless: Android 11 or later,
adb, and a shared network for the phone and computer.
Mozilla Support says Firefox for Android is compatible with Android 8.0 or later; that browser compatibility statement is not a stated minimum version for USB remote debugging. Menu names can vary between Firefox and Android releases. Mozilla’s compatibility page was last updated March 20, 2026.
Connect Firefox for Android to desktop Developer Tools over USB
- Open the remote debugging page on the computer. In desktop Firefox, enter
about:debuggingin the address bar. Mozilla also lists Tools > Browser Tools > Remote Debugging as an entry point. Enable USB Devices on the page if it is not already enabled. - Enable Android Developer options. On the phone, open its About phone settings and tap Build Number seven times. Android menu paths vary by manufacturer and release.
- Enable Android USB debugging. Find Developer options in Android settings and turn on USB debugging.
- Enable Firefox’s remote debugging setting. In Firefox for Android, open Settings > Advanced Settings and turn on Remote Debugging via USB. This Firefox setting and Android’s USB debugging setting are separate requirements.
- Connect the phone. Attach it to the computer using a data-capable cable. If Android asks whether to authorize USB debugging from this computer, accept the prompt on the phone.
- Refresh and connect. In
about:debugging, select Refresh devices if the phone does not appear. Open the page you want to debug in Firefox for Android, then click Connect beside the device name.

Use wireless debugging instead
Mozilla documents wireless debugging for Android 11 or later. It avoids the USB cable, but still requires adb; the computer running about:debugging and the phone must be on the same network.

- Enable Android Developer options on the phone, then turn on Wireless debugging.
- On the computer, open Firefox’s
about:debuggingpage and follow the wireless pairing and connection flow shown by Android and Firefox. - Use the phone’s local IP address where the flow requests it, complete the pairing prompt, and connect to the Firefox target for the open page.
The precise prompts depend on the Android and Firefox versions. Follow the pairing information displayed by the devices rather than assuming a fixed address or port. See Mozilla’s wireless debugging instructions.
Choose USB or wireless

Mozilla documents both routes but does not establish that one is universally faster or more reliable. The practical choice depends on Android version, cable availability, shared-network access, and whether you can complete the authorization or pairing prompts.

Troubleshoot a missing phone or disabled USB Devices control
The phone does not appear in about:debugging
- Confirm that USB Devices is enabled in
about:debugging. - Check that Android Developer options and USB debugging are enabled.
- Check that Firefox for Android has Remote Debugging via USB enabled.
- Make sure the cable supports data, not only charging, and reconnect the phone.
- Look at the phone for a computer-authorization prompt. Accept it, then select Refresh devices on the computer.
- Confirm that
adbis installed on the computer.
These are the setup checks in Mozilla’s current remote debugging documentation; the documentation does not attribute every missing-device problem to one particular cause.
USB Devices turns itself off
Mozilla Support has a historical 2022 report in which the Enable USB Devices control returned to Disabled. A forum response suggested changing devtools.remote.adb.extensionURL, but that was user-reported troubleshooting for a past extension-path issue, not Mozilla’s current baseline setup. Do not change the preference unless you have verified that your current problem matches that report. See the archived support thread.

Wireless pairing does not work
Verify that the phone is running Android 11 or later, Wireless debugging is enabled, adb is available, and both devices are on the same network. Then follow the pairing prompts shown by Android and Firefox. Mozilla’s documented wireless prerequisites are in the about:debugging guide.
What remote debugging lets you do
Once connected, desktop Firefox’s Developer Tools are attached to the Firefox for Android page you opened. Use them to inspect and troubleshoot the site as it runs in the mobile browser. The remote connection workflow described here is not an in-app DevTools interface on the phone; the main DevTools interface is on the computer.
