When AI-generated code fails a test, do not assume the implementation is wrong or ask the assistant to make the test green. Preserve the exact failure, define the required behavior independently, classify the failure, inspect runtime evidence, and use the assistant to generate hypotheses you can falsify. Then make the smallest justified change and rerun the focused test and related suite.
What a failing test actually tells you
A failed test is an observation, not a complete diagnosis. It tells you that, under one command and one set of conditions, the observed result differed from what the test reported as expected, or that execution stopped with an error. It does not, by itself, prove that the production code is defective.

AI-generated code adds another source of uncertainty. An assistant can produce a plausible implementation that uses the wrong library API, misunderstands a requirement, ignores a boundary case, or assumes a runtime condition that is not true. It can also expose an existing problem in a fixture, import, configuration file, test expectation, or environment. Treat the assistant as a hypothesis generator and code explainer; treat the trace, assertion, call stack, runtime values, and project requirements as the evidence.
Start by recording the exact command, test name, complete error or assertion output, expected value, actual value, and whether the result repeats. Keep separate notes for crashes and incorrect results: the debugging path is different.

Step 1: Preserve the failure and establish a baseline
Before changing another line, make the failure reproducible enough to study. Save the terminal output or CI log rather than relying on a shortened editor notification. Include the first exception, the full assertion message, and the call stack around the failure. If output is truncated, rerun with the test runner’s documented option for verbose or uncaptured output.
Record the execution context
- The exact test command, working directory, and test name or selection.
- The commit or working-tree state, including uncommitted AI-generated changes.
- Language and runtime versions, dependency lockfile state, operating system, and relevant environment variables.
- Whether the failure occurs every time, only after a particular order of tests, or only in a remote runner.
- For a value mismatch, the input, expected value, actual value, and useful intermediate values.
Check the project’s test instructions and identify the framework before interpreting its output. Run the narrowest relevant test in the current state. This baseline distinguishes a pre-existing failure from one introduced by the generated patch. If the test cannot run because collection, import, compilation, or setup fails, record that as the baseline failure instead of silently editing the implementation.
Do not destroy diagnostic information
Do not immediately remove an assertion, skip the test, catch the exception, or add a broad retry. Those actions can turn an informative red result into an unverified green run. Keep a copy of the original failure and make one change at a time so the next result has a clear cause.

Step 2: State the required behavior independently
Write the requirement in observable terms before reading the generated function as if it were the specification. Use the product documentation, issue description, API contract, type definition, or acceptance criteria. Describe normal inputs, boundary inputs, and expected error behavior. If a date, locale, ordering rule, rounding mode, or default is significant, state it explicitly.
Expected values must be independent of the implementation under test. A test that calculates its expected result by calling the same potentially faulty function can reproduce the defect and still pass. Prefer a fixed example, a separately reviewed calculation, a trusted fixture, or an independently implemented oracle. When the requirement is ambiguous, resolve the ambiguity with the owner or authoritative documentation rather than asking the assistant to infer intent from the current code.
Separate contract questions from implementation questions
- Contract: What should a caller observe for this input, including the return value, side effect, exception, and timing?
- Test: Does the assertion encode that contract without depending on private implementation details?
- Implementation: Does the code actually produce the contract under the stated runtime conditions?
This separation prevents a common AI-debugging mistake: changing a test merely because the generated implementation chose a different behavior.

Step 3: Classify the failure before editing
Use the failure shape to choose the next evidence to collect. The categories can overlap, but each points to a different investigation.
| Failure shape | What to inspect first | What would confirm the diagnosis |
|---|---|---|
| Exception, build error, or process crash | Exception type and message, file and line, call stack, imports, types, and the values entering the failing operation | The same operation fails with the same state when the narrow test is rerun |
| Program runs but output is wrong | Input, expected result, actual result, and value transformations along the relevant path | A trace or debugger session shows where the value first diverges from the contract |
| Test cannot collect or initialize | Test imports, fixtures, configuration, dependency versions, working directory, and setup hooks | A minimal test or collection command isolates the setup failure without exercising the implementation |
| Only CI fails | Runner image, operating system, timezone, locale, dependency resolution, environment variables, and command differences | A side-by-side comparison identifies a condition present in CI but absent locally |
| Passes sometimes and fails sometimes | Timing, asynchronous completion, shared state, test order, random seeds, and external services | Logs from passing and failing runs show a repeatable ordering or state difference |
This classification avoids asking an AI assistant for a generic rewrite when the real problem is a missing fixture or a race.
Step 4: Collect runtime evidence, not just a code explanation
Static code inspection can reveal a suspicious branch, but it cannot prove what values reached that branch. Use the tools your language and IDE provide to inspect the call stack, selected stack frame, local variables, arguments, and side effects at the point of failure. Microsoft’s Visual Studio guidance describes this debugger context as useful input for an AI debugging workflow; the principle applies even when your editor has different labels or no built-in assistant.
For an exception or crash
- Read the exception type and message literally. Distinguish a missing attribute, invalid index, type mismatch, timeout, assertion failure, and process-level error.
- Start at the first relevant frame in your own code, not automatically at the last framework frame.
- Inspect the values and types passed to the failing operation, including whether a value is null, empty, stale, or in a different unit.
- Trace backward to the operation that produced the invalid value. The line that raises the exception may only be where an earlier assumption becomes visible.
For an incorrect result
- Capture the exact input and expected-versus-actual output.
- Set a breakpoint or add temporary, targeted observation at the function boundary and at the first transformation that could alter the result.
- Follow the value through parsing, filtering, sorting, arithmetic, serialization, and formatting. Check units, precision, case, encoding, and ordering.
- Remove temporary instrumentation after verification, or keep a deliberately scoped diagnostic if it improves future failure reports.
Do not let a polished explanation substitute for this evidence. An assistant may correctly describe what a branch appears to do while missing a configuration value, mock behavior, or race that occurs only at runtime.
Step 5: Ask the assistant for a falsifiable diagnosis
Give the assistant enough context to reason about one specific failure. Include the failing test, relevant implementation and test files, exact command, complete output, stated requirement, and checks you have already performed. Avoid pasting an entire repository when a focused slice explains the behavior; irrelevant context makes a plausible but unfocused answer more likely.
Ask for hypotheses that can be disproved, not an unconditional patch. A useful request asks the assistant to:

- Separate what the failure proves from what it does not prove.
- List the most likely causes in priority order.
- Identify the code location, runtime value, log entry, or experiment that would distinguish each cause.
- Propose the smallest correction consistent with the requirement.
- Preserve assertions and tests unless the documented behavior shows that they are wrong.
- State the exact focused test and related suite to run after the change.
This test fails with the output below.
Requirement: [observable behavior]
Command: [project test command]
Relevant implementation and test files: [file paths]
Failure output: [complete traceback or assertion]
What I have checked: [baseline, versions, runtime values]
Explain what the failure proves and what it does not prove. Give the most likely causes, the evidence that would distinguish them, and the smallest proposed fix. Do not change tests or weaken assertions to make the run pass. After the fix, name the targeted test and related suite that must be run.
The bracketed notation above is a prompt template; replace each item with the real project information before sending it. If the assistant proposes changing the expected value, require it to cite the requirement or documentation that justifies that change.
Step 6: Apply a small correction and verify it
Review the proposed diff line by line before running it. Look for unrelated refactoring, new dependencies, changed public behavior, removed assertions, broadened exception handling, disabled checks, and generated code that does not match the project’s style or supported runtime.
- Make the smallest change that addresses the confirmed cause.
- Run the narrowest failing test and inspect the actual output, not just the exit status.
- Run the directly related tests to detect interaction or regression.
- Review the final diff and working-tree status for accidental edits, deleted coverage, or modified configuration.
- Run the project’s broader required checks when the focused and related tests are stable.
A test that was skipped, blocked by setup, filtered out, or never executed is not verified. Report that distinction in the change review or incident record. A green result is meaningful only when the intended test actually ran with the expected assertions.
When the code passes locally but fails in CI
Do not regenerate the implementation first. Compare the passing local run with the failing CI run as two experiments. Record the runner operating system and image, language and dependency versions, timezone, locale, environment variables, working directory, test command, parallelism, and service configuration.
Timezone and date boundaries
GitHub’s documented CI example shows a date assertion differing because the runner used UTC while the developer’s machine used another timezone near midnight. A test that converts an instant to a calendar date without specifying the intended zone can pass locally and fail in CI. Confirm whether the requirement is an absolute instant, a UTC date, or a user-local date. Then make the clock or timezone explicit in the code and test, or configure both environments consistently. Do not “fix” the test by accepting multiple dates unless the product contract really allows them.
Dependencies and configuration
Compare lockfiles and resolved versions rather than only the declared version range. Check optional packages, feature flags, secrets, filesystem paths, network availability, encoding, and generated files. A missing import or fixture can look like an implementation defect when CI simply did not install or expose the same prerequisite.

Command and order differences
CI may run a different selection, enable parallel workers, use a clean database, or execute tests in an order that reveals shared state. Reproduce those conditions locally where possible, then isolate the first test that leaves state behind. Fix the ownership and cleanup of that state instead of relying on an order that happens to pass.
When a test passes sometimes and fails sometimes
Intermittent results require comparing at least one passing and one failing run. Preserve timestamps, thread or task identifiers, event names, random seeds, retries, and the order in which setup and cleanup occurred. A single failing log encourages speculation; paired logs reveal the difference that matters.
Asynchronous work and races
GitHub’s example of an intermittent failure checks an asynchronous job’s status before the job has completed. The fix is to wait for a defined completion condition, notification, or state transition, not to insert an arbitrary sleep. A fixed delay can merely make the race rarer while increasing test time.
Ask what event makes the result observable: a future resolving, a queue acknowledging a message, a database transaction becoming committed, or a service reporting a terminal state. Await or poll that condition with a bounded timeout and a diagnostic timeout message. Ensure cleanup cannot cancel or overwrite the work before the assertion runs.
Other intermittent causes
- Shared mutable fixtures or files that are not reset between tests.
- Tests that depend on wall-clock time, random data, network services, or process scheduling.
- Parallel tests using the same port, database rows, temporary directory, or global configuration.
- Unordered collections or nondeterministic iteration where the contract does not define an order.
Make nondeterminism explicit: seed randomness when appropriate, isolate resources, assert only the ordering the contract promises, and log the state needed to diagnose a timeout.

Common ways generated code fails tests
Invented or mismatched APIs
An assistant can combine patterns from different library versions or languages. Verify every method, argument name, return type, and exception against the version actually installed. A failure such as “attribute not found” may indicate an API mismatch rather than a logic error. Confirm with the package’s local type information or official documentation before replacing the whole function.
Best Value
Hidden assumptions about input
Generated code often handles the happy path while omitting empty collections, null values, duplicate records, malformed text, negative numbers, maximum sizes, or already-completed states. Add or inspect focused tests for the boundary behavior required by the contract. Do not add hypothetical behavior that the product does not specify merely because an assistant lists it.
Incorrect units, formats, or ordering
Wrong results frequently come from mixing seconds and milliseconds, local time and UTC, inclusive and exclusive endpoints, decimal and binary units, or display strings and machine values. Trace the value at each conversion and make the unit or format part of the interface where possible.
Overbroad error handling
A generated patch may catch every exception and return a default. That can make a test pass while hiding a real failure and changing the API’s error contract. Catch only the documented, recoverable condition; preserve the original cause in diagnostics; and test both recovery and unexpected-error paths.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Tests coupled to implementation details
The opposite problem is a test that asserts a private call sequence, a specific temporary variable, or an incidental formatting choice instead of observable behavior. If the requirement permits several implementations, adjust the test only with a documented reason. Do not weaken an assertion simply because the generated code took a different route.
How to decide whether the test is wrong
Inspect the test as critically as the implementation. A setup problem can prevent the intended code from running. A fixture can contain the wrong data. An expectation can encode an outdated requirement, an incorrect timezone, or a calculation that repeats the production bug. A mock can return an impossible state and drive the function down a path that real callers never use.
Change a test when you can point to an authoritative requirement or a reproducible setup defect, and document why. Update the implementation when the independently stated behavior is correct and the runtime evidence shows that the code violates it. If neither is clear, gather more evidence rather than choosing the file that is easier to edit.
A practical debugging checklist
- Have I saved the exact command, test name, traceback or assertion, expected value, and actual value?
- Does the failure reproduce, and was the narrowest relevant test run before the latest change?
- What does the requirement or documentation say for normal, boundary, and error cases?
- Is the expected result independent of the implementation under test?
- Is this a crash, wrong output, setup problem, CI difference, or intermittent behavior?
- What do the call stack and runtime variables show at the point of failure?
- Have I compared a passing and failing environment or run when the problem is conditional?
- Did I give the assistant the complete failure and ask for evidence that would falsify each hypothesis?
- Does the proposed patch preserve assertions, coverage, and unrelated behavior?
- Did the focused test actually execute, followed by the related suite, and did I inspect the diff?
Using AI safely after the fix
Once a correction is verified, an assistant can help explain the root cause, suggest a regression test, or improve the failure message. Ask it to describe the invariant that was violated and the condition that now protects it. Review the explanation against the final code and test output; do not accept a post-hoc story merely because the run is green.

The assistant may know common debugging patterns, but it may not know your deployment environment, private requirements, dependency lockfile, clock, test order, or runtime state.
