Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo debug a locally served website on a real Android phone, connect it to desktop Chrome with USB debugging enabled, open chrome://inspect/#devices, and use Port forwarding to map a phone-side port to your development computer’s server. Then open the forwarded address, such as http://localhost:5000, in Chrome on Android. The USB forwarding route carries the page traffic over the cable, so the phone and computer do not need to share a network.
Choose the right way to reach your local site
| Method | Use it when | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| USB port forwarding | Your development server is available at a host and port such as localhost:5000. |
USB debugging, a data-capable cable, desktop Chrome, and a port mapping. |
| Proxy-based custom-domain mapping | The site depends on a local hostname such as chrome.devtools. |
A hosts-file entry, a proxy, USB forwarding to that proxy, and Android Wi-Fi proxy settings. |
| Manual adb forwarding | You need direct access to Chrome DevTools Protocol endpoints, often for automation or a specialized workflow. | Android Debug Bridge (adb) and a forwarded Chrome debugging socket. |
For an ordinary local server, start with USB port forwarding: it is the shortest setup and avoids changing network settings. Chrome for Developers says the forwarded traffic travels over USB and does not depend on network configuration. Chrome’s port-forwarding guide documents the local-server workflow. The separate remote debugging guide documents device discovery and inspection.
Connect Android Chrome to desktop DevTools
- Enable Android Developer Options and USB debugging. Follow the device maker’s Android instructions for enabling Developer Options, then turn on USB debugging in Developer Options. The exact menu labels can vary by device and Android version.
- Open desktop Chrome’s device inspector. On the development computer, navigate to
chrome://inspect/#devicesand ensure Discover USB devices is selected. - Connect the phone directly by USB. Use a cable that supports data transfer, not just charging. If Android asks whether to allow USB debugging from this computer, accept the prompt. A device may initially appear as Offline while awaiting authorization.
- Open the page on the phone. Start Chrome on Android and load the site or page you want to inspect. The desktop device page should list Android Chrome tabs and show the Android Chrome version.
- Open DevTools for that tab. Select Inspect beside the tab’s URL. A DevTools window opens on the computer for the page on the phone. The Android Chrome version determines which DevTools version opens, so its interface may differ from the desktop Chrome version.
Inspect and interact with the page
Use the Elements panel to examine the page’s DOM and styles. The element-selection tool may need to be re-enabled after each touch. To view and interact with the phone’s page from the computer, toggle Screencast: computer clicks act as taps, and computer keystrokes are sent to the device. Chrome warns that screencasting reduces frame rates, so turn it off when measuring scrolling or animation performance.
Open your computer’s localhost server on Android
On Android, localhost means the phone itself, not your development computer. Port forwarding bridges that gap: Chrome maps a port on the phone to the host and port where your server runs on the computer.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Make sure the phone is connected and visible at
chrome://inspect/#devices, with Discover USB devices enabled. - On the device-inspection page, open Port forwarding and enable it. Chrome may show a default mapping such as
localhost:8080. - Add or edit a mapping. Set the device-side port to the port you want to use on Android, and set the local address to the development computer’s server address and port. For example, map device port
5000tolocalhost:5000on the computer. - In Chrome on Android, visit
http://localhost:5000, replacing5000with the device-side port from your mapping. Use the scheme your local server supports, such ashttporhttps.
If the device-side and computer-side ports differ, enter the device-side port in the Android URL. The forwarding status indicator in the device UI can help confirm whether a mapping is active.
Handle a project that needs a custom local hostname
A project may rely on a hostname such as chrome.devtools for routing, cookies, or origin-specific behavior. In that case, forwarding directly to a server by IP or localhost may not reproduce the expected hostname. Chrome’s documented approach uses a proxy and USB port forwarding.

- Add a hosts-file entry on the development computer that maps the custom hostname to localhost, following the operating system’s hosts-file procedure.
- Run a proxy, such as one of the examples Chrome names—Charles, Squid, or Fiddler—and configure the proxy to route the custom hostname to your local web server.
- Use different ports for the proxy and the development server. Forward the proxy’s port to the phone using Chrome’s USB port-forwarding interface.
- On Android, edit the Wi-Fi network’s proxy configuration to use manual proxy settings. Set the proxy host to
localhostand the port to the forwarded device-side proxy port. - Open the custom hostname in Android Chrome. If the web server uses a non-standard port, include it in the URL, for example
http://chrome.devtools:3000. - When finished, restore the Android Wi-Fi proxy setting so normal browsing no longer uses the development proxy.
This method adds machine and network configuration that the standard USB mapping does not need; use it only when the hostname matters to the behavior you are debugging.
Use adb forwarding for direct protocol access
Most developers should use chrome://inspect/#devices. If you specifically need Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) endpoints, Chrome documents a manual adb alternative. Connect the device over USB (or adb Wi-Fi), enable USB debugging, and confirm adb sees it:

Forward the Chrome debugging socket to a local computer port:
adb forward tcp:9222 localabstract:chrome_devtools_remote
Then inspect available page targets at http://localhost:9222/json; http://localhost:9222/json/version exposes the browser target endpoint. This is a lower-level route than opening a tab through the device-inspection page, and Chrome describes it as useful in rare cases.

Troubleshoot device discovery and local-page failures
Desktop Chrome does not detect the phone
- Connect the phone directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub, then unplug and reconnect it with both screens unlocked.
- Check that the cable carries data. A practical check is whether the computer can access files on the phone through that cable.
- Keep the Android home screen visible and desktop DevTools focused while reconnecting if no authorization prompt appears. Check that the phone is awake; device sleep settings can interrupt the prompt.
- On Windows, install the phone maker’s USB driver if that device and computer combination requires one.
- If the authorization prompt still does not appear, Chrome’s troubleshooting suggestions include trying PTP USB mode or revoking USB debugging authorizations and reconnecting. Settings and their names vary by device.
The phone is shown as Offline or pending authentication
Unlock the phone and accept its USB debugging authorization prompt. After the computer is authorized, the device should show its model name rather than remain pending.
The forwarded local page will not load
- Confirm Port forwarding is enabled and the mapping appears active.
- Check that Android Chrome uses the mapped device-side port, not a different server port by mistake.
- Verify that the computer-side host and port match the running server. If the server is not listening on the address you entered, the mapping cannot reach it.
- Use the correct URL scheme and include a non-standard server port where required.
The custom hostname does not resolve or reaches the wrong site
Use the proxy-based mapping rather than a plain localhost mapping, verify the hosts-file entry and proxy routing, and keep the proxy and web server on different ports. If the server uses a non-standard port, include it in the Android URL. Reset the phone’s Wi-Fi proxy after testing.

Scrolling or animation looks slower while inspecting
Disable Screencast before assessing frame rates. Chrome explicitly cautions that screencasting can reduce them; do not treat a mirrored session as a clean performance measurement.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than interactive DevTools debugging, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It does not replace inspecting a live Android tab, but it can capture a URL without setting up a browser on the phone.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers reporting the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Does Android USB port forwarding require the phone and computer to be on the same Wi-Fi?
No. The forwarded page traffic travels over the USB connection.
Can I inspect a page in Android Chrome without a physical USB cable?
Chrome’s manual adb workflow can use adb Wi-Fi, but the standard device-discovery and port-forwarding setup described here uses USB.
